MR. GUTHRIE
VALLEY -- Mr. Thomas A. Guthrie, 94, of Valley died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with Dr. Jerome King officiating. Burial will follow at Shawmut Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hazel M. Guthrie; three sisters-in-law, Thelma Lane and Faith Pruitt of Valley and Francis Campbell of Leeds, Ala.; two brothers-in-law, Alfred Mangrum of Columbus, Ga., and J.H. Mangrum of Albertville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Guthrie was born July 22, 1910 in Dadeville, Ala., the son of the late Allen and Leslie Guthrie. He was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens and a member of First Baptist Church of Shawmut. He loved gardening, fishing and his pet deer. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Grady Guthrie and Robert Guthrie; and three sisters, Eula Mae Guthrie, Mary Guthrie and Stella Guthrie. MR. MOORE
OPELIKA -- Mr. Thomas E. Moore, 57, of Opelika died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. Graveside services were scheduled Monday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. at Shawmut Cemetery, Mr. Moore is survived by two sons, Thomas Jarrod (Kelli) Moore Sr. of LaFayette and Richard Shane Moore of Beauregard; one brother, Donald (Betty) Moore of Bakersville, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Born Feb. 11, 1947 in Chambers County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late Elma Pratt Moore and Alvin Moore. He was a retired employee of International Wood Co. Mr. Moore was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed wood working and was an avid coin collector. MRS. BIRDEN
WEST POINT -- Mrs. Corine H. Birden, 83, of West Point died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at the Brian Health Care Center in LaGrange. Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church in Lanett with the Rev. Walter Darden and the Rev. Charles Trammell officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John Community Baptist Church Cemetery on State Line Road in Lanett. Mrs. Birden is survived by her daughter, Mattie (Frank) Taylor of West Point; three sons, Gary (Mary) Hollis and Columbus Hollis, both of LaGrange, and Nathaniel (Jennifer) Hollis of Lanett; one sister, Mattie (James) Walker of Cataula, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, Mary Glaze, Eddie Hulin of West Point, Gloria Glaze of Dayton, Ohio, Demetress, Lamar, Gary and Anthony Hollis, all of Lanett, Roderick and Marco Holloway of Lanett, Victor Dunn of Valley and Maketta Allen of West Point; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Birden was born May 25, 1921. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest, and two sisters, Elizabeth Davidson and Mandy Dawson. VALLEY -- Mrs. Annie Thelma Harper, 81, of Valley died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at Mt. VALLEY -- Mr. Johnny Lane Hatchett, 51, of Valley died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange. Born Sept. 13, 1952 in Valley, Mr. Hatchett was the son of the late Mary Ruth Lane Hatchett and John Willie Hatchett. He was a lifelong resident of the Valley area and had attended Valley High School. He was an avid music lover and had a compassionate heart for animals. LANETT -- Mr. Carle Sheppard, 85, of Lanett died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home. Mr. Sheppard is survived by his wife, Helen Andrews Sheppard; one daughter, Margaret (Tom) McNaron of Anniston, Ala.; one son, Richard (Sue) Sheppard of LaFayette; three grandchildren, Brandon Sheppard, Stephen Sheppard and Benjamin McNaron; and one great-grandchild, Blake Sheppard. Born July 22, 1919, Mr. Sheppard was the son the late of Maude Newman Sheppard and Abe Sheppard. He was an active member of Lanett First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Mr. Sheppard was a former member of the Lanett City School Board, the American Legion and the Lanett Kiwanis Club. He was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army. Born in Crisp County, Ga. on Aug. 22, 1916, Mrs. Sparks was a member of Evangel Temple. She retired from West Point Pepperell after 40 years of service. Mr. Dykes is survived by his mother and stepfather, Quintella and James Larry Allen of Valley; his father and stepmother, Ernie and Hope Dykes of LaGrange; two sisters, Holly Dykes Heckert of Phoenix Ariz., and Jill Dykes of LaGrange; a step-brother, Jonathan Allen of Valley; his grandparents, Jim and Eva Dykes of Cusseta, Louise McConnell of Valley, Ellis and Jan Freeman of Woodbury, Ga., and Annie Ruth Childers of Notasulga, Ala.; a great-grandmother, Helen Bendel of Cusseta; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Born in LaGrange on March 29, 1983, Mr. Dykes was a 2001 graduate of Callaway High School, and he had attended West Georgia Technical College. Mr. Wilkins is survived by his wife, Claudette Wilkins of Pine Mountain; two daughters, Josette (Mike) Brown of Woodbury, Ga., and Debra Green of Fortson, Ga.; one son, Carl (Jan) Fletcher of Macon, Ga.; one sister, Gertrude Rouch of Marysville, Ohio; one brother, Kenneth Wilkins of Cable, Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born in Champaign County, Ohio on June 3, 1932, Mr. Wilkins was the son of the late Nila Jones Wilkins and the late Walter Leslie Wilkins. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. Mr. Wilkins was retired from Callaway Gardens where he served as the manager of the Skeet and Trap Range, shooting instructor and consultant. He served in the U.S. Army during the 1950s. Mr. Wilkins was an honorary Kentucky Colonel and was a life member of the National Skeet Shooting Association and the Hall of Fame of the Georgia Skeet Shooting Association. He was a member of the Military Marksman Association. VALLEY -- Mr. James Robert Wood Sr., 77, of Valley died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. Adamson of Lanett and Thelma Smith of Tallapoosa, Ga.; two brothers, Fred (Sue) Wood of Conyers, Ga., and Roger (Doris) Wood of Arlington, Texas; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Born Nov. 2, 1926 in Shannon, Ga., Mr. Wood was the son of the late Vera Walton Wood and John Mack Wood. He was a loving husband and father. Mr. Wood was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Wood was a very active member of the Lanett First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, was a very active church worker and was a member of the Jolly Seniors group. He had been employed with several of the drug stores in the area. He loved cooking and doing things for others. Mr. Wood will always be remembered for his dressing and chocolate cakes. BEULAH -- Mr. Forrest "Bud" Barrington, 88, of Beulah died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tuskegee. MRS. GUNN
LANETT -- Mrs. Ruth Grady Gunn, 82, of Lanett died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Hospice LaGrange. Born on Oct. 5, 1921, Mrs. Gunn was the daughter of the late Morgan and Anne Matthews Grady. She was born in Five Points but lived in Lanett most of her life. During the past 15 months, she was a resident of Florence Hand Home in LaGrange. A member of First United Methodist Church in Lanett, she was a choir member and soloist for 60 years. For 10 years prior to moving to Florence Hand, she served as program chairperson for the "Young At Heart" senior adult luncheons at her church. While at Florence Hand, she played the piano for the residents there. She was preceded in death by a brother, Colonel John W. Grady of Auburn; a sister, Margaret Grady Smith of West Point; and her former husband, James H. Gunn of Lanett. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Rick Shaver of Kingsport, Tenn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Donna Gunn of Old Hickory, Tenn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Julie Gunn of Greenville, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Jean) Grady of LaGrange; a sister, Anne (Edwin) Miller of Ann Arbor, Mich; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lester and Elaine McCullough; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Lanett Saturday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joyce Akridge and the Rev. Danny Smith officiating. Mrs. Huguley is survived by three daughters, Joyce Felton and Latrease Huguley, both of Lanett, and Valeria Huguley of West Point; one son, Clyde (Jackie) Huguley of Lanett; two sisters, Gladys (John) Bradshaw and Ida Turner; one brother, John Ruben Appleby, all of Atlanta; one aunt, Cora Oliver of Welch, Ala.; eight grandchildren; a devoted stepdaughter, nephew and friends, Maria (Charles) Davis, Alexander Paige, Walter Lee Bonner and Sara Mae Bailey. Born Jan. 10, 1937, Mrs. Huguley was a native of Chambers County. She was preceded in death by Horace Lovelace; her sister, Annie Ruth Paige; her brother, Josephus Appleby, her huband, Forrest Huguley; and her parents, Rufus and Inez Appleby. The body will lie in state at the church from noon until the funeral hour. Morgan's Funeral Home of Lanett is handling arrangements.

MRS. CRUTCHFIELD
VALLEY -- Mrs. Edith Posey Crutchfield, 85, of Valley died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Mike Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Langdale Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Bobby (Carolyn) Crutchfield of Valley and Larry (Candy) Crutchfield of West Point; three grandchildren, Robbye (Galen) Smith of Valley, Chad (Michelle) Crutchfield of Valley and Ryan Crutchfield of Columbus, Ga.; six great-grandchildren, Madyson Crutchfield, C.J. Crutchfield, Jacob Crutchfield, Elizabeth Crutchfield, Carson Smith and Mitchum Smith; two sisters, Evelyn Matthews of Florence, Ala., and Helen (Carroll) Hill of Moulton, Ala.; and one brother, Carl (Evelyn) Posey of Decatur, Ala. Mrs. Crutchfield was born Jan. 4, 1919 in Lawrence County, Ala., the daughter of the late Lillian Ray Posey and Elmer Posey. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Grace Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Crutchfield; her sister, Edna Crutchfield; and her brothers, Clyde and Leon Posey; The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley. MR. ANDREWS
LaFAYETTE -- Mr. Leonard "Len" Andrews, 72, of LaFayette died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004 at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, Aug. 5 at Antioch Baptist Church at 1 p.m. CDT with the Revs. Wayne Barrett and Jimmy Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Andrews is survived by his wife, Ethel Andrews of LaFayette; one daughter, Donna Andrews of Opelika; one son, James Andrews of Lanett; four sisters, Helen Sheppard of Lanett, Mary Jim Farrington of LaFayette, Jean Owen of Phenix City and Dot Allen of Ridge Grove; and six grandchildren, Brandi Andrews, Matt Thomas, Jamie Andrews, Gregory King, Shelby King and Zachary Andrews. Born in Chambers County Jan. 24, 1932, Mr. Andrews was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He retired from Langley Motor Co. in Lanett as service manager after 15 years of service and later retired from the Chambers County Landfill. The family will receive friends at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette Wednesday, Aug. 4 from 6 until 8 p.m. CDT. Jeff Jones Funeral Home of LaFayette is handling arrangements.

MR. FERRELL
VALLEY -- Mr. Terrell Lamar Ferrell, 33, of Valley died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley. Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church of Lanett with the Revs. Louis Upshaw, Tony Avery, Louis Williams and Billy Avery officiating. Burial will follow in Pinehill Cemetery. Mr. Ferrell is survived by one daughter, Bailey Seymone Ferrell of Perry, Ga.; his parents, Ms. Margie Ferrell, Mr. Clarence Ferrell and Mattie Monagan Ferrell of West Point; one brother, Clarence Ferrell Jr. of Valley; one sister, Veronica Michelle Ferrell of Atlanta; one step-brother, Carl Monagan of West Point; his paternal grandfather, Sylvester Sherman of Lanett; his maternal grandmother, Addie Mae Davis of Lanett; seven aunts, Henrietta Huff, Annie Crawford and Barbara Hurston, all of Atlanta, Diana Wood of Birmingham, Ala., Mary Frances (Henry) Thomas and Mary Ridgeway, both of Lanett, and Janette (Jimmy) Vaughn of Woodland, N.C.; five uncles, Marvin Dewey of Opelika, Tommy Lee Ferrell of Atlanta; Joe (Linda) Ferrell of St. Petersburg, Fla., Kenny Ferrell and Jerry Ferrell, both of Lanett; a special companion, Meioshekai U. Leverette of Lanett; two nieces, two nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends. Born Sept. 1, 1970, Mr. Ferrell was a member of the Valley High School Class of 1989. He was employed with West Point Steven's Fairview Plant with more than 17 years of service and with Wal-Mart Super Center with more than five years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 4 at M.W. Lee Mortuary from 6 until 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state at the church Thursday, Aug. 5 from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.
