Gregory Roettger
Services for Abbott Gregory John Roettger, O.S.B. (retired), 93, of Cullman will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at St. Bernard Abbey, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Abbott Roettger died Saturday, June 23 at his residence. He was born Nov. 27, 1907 in Richmond, Minn. to John Henry and Bertha Bukowski Roettger. He was a priest at St. Bernard Abbey. Originally a member of St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minn., he was appointed apostolic administrator for St. Bernard in 1964 and was elected abbot three years later, holding that office until 1972. Since then he had remained a monk of St. Bernard Abbey, active in the work of the monastic community. He served as pastor of St. Margaret Church in Foley from 1973 to 1982. Returning to St. Bernard, he was a frequent supply priest in many parishes on weekends. For some years he had been a teacher in the monastic formation department at the abbey. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was Monday.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, E.O. Drake and Earnest Drake; and two sisters, Irene Barronton and Bet Freeman. Services for Tempie Jacobs, 79, of Vinemont will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Jerry Lake officiating, with burial in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Jacobs died Wednesday, June 27 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 6, 1921 in Alabama to Harley and Alice Izora Burks Clark. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include two sons, Terrance Jacobs of Vinemont and Clifton Jacobs of Cullman; three daughters, Selma Deane Roland and Carlotta Jacobs, both of Vinemont, and June Cooper of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Glenn Clark of Arab; three sisters, Zenobia Crawford of Morgan City, Pauline Williams of Cullman and Marie Walker of Lacy Springs; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tempie Jacobs Memorial Fund. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Charles A. Pennington
Services for Charles A. Pennington, 69, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001 at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Revs. Odie Curvin and Bill Goodwin officiating, with burial at Fairview West Cemetery. Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Pennington died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Effie Owens Pennington; sister, Lucille Boone; and brothers, John H. and Junior Pennington. Survivors include his wife, Imogene Sullins Pennington of Hanceville; son, Chris (Nancy) Pennington of Hanceville; daughter, Cindy (Danny) Williams of Hanceville; five grandchildren, Brandy, Brett and Brian Pennington, Ashley and Kristin Williams; one great-grandchild, Chase Pennington; and two brothers, Elbert Pennington, Thomas “Jutt” Pennington, both of Vernon. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Violet Horton Allen
Services for Violet Horton Allen, 85, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Cullman, Drs. Rick Lance and Edwin Hayes officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery. Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Allen died Tuesday, June 26 at Cullman Long Term Care. She was born Jan. 15, 1916 to William Issac and Ardilia Hicks Horton. She was a bookkeeper for Deep South Creamery for over 30 years and then for Maintenance Systems before retiring. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cullman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.T. Allen; three sisters, Mae Horton Brandon, Ima Horton Stancil and Eura Horton Eidson; and three brothers, Jack Horton, Ben Horton and Lynn Horton. Survivors include two special cousins, Horace and Joyce Horton; and special friend, Betty Leeth Haynes. Pallbearers will be Harold Singleton, Charles Glover, Joe Watters, Tom Hancock, Tom Caudle and Seth Thompson. Visitation was Wednesday.

Ervin L. ‘Hoss’ Reid
Services for Ervin L. “Hoss” Reid, 64, of Arab will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, at New Friendship Baptist Church, the Revs. Fred Wilks and Jerry Freeman officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Arab Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Reid died Tuesday, June 26 at Marshall Medical Center North. He was born to Reese L. and Annie Rodgers Reid. He was a self-employed drywall hanger and musician as well as a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a former city councilman at Good Hope, a member of the American Legion Post No. 15 at Decatur and a member of the New Friendship Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Reid of Arab; three daughters, Sherry (Clark) Fincher of Cullman, Lisa (Clint) Blackmon and Angie (Billy) Bishop, both of Arab; two brothers, Billy Reid of Cullman and Amos Reid of Mobile; six sisters, Vonda Lee Speegle, Wilma Jean Hollis and Shirley Swann, all of Cullman, Ivalene Waldrop of Birmingham, Maggie McWhorter and Selma Howerton, both of Mississippi; and five grandchildren, Ben and Jessica Fincher, Brooke and Maranda Bishop, Haley Blackmon. Pallbearers will be Joel Moore, Charles Belk, Ted Crabtree, Pete Harris, Eddie Burns and Kent Goodwin. Honorary pallbearers will be the Country Music Musicians. Visitation was Wednesday.
