August 8, 1835: Died, in this place, on Monday evening last, after an illness of three weeks, Mr. Daniel W. GARRET, in the 25th year of his age. He was from Greene, Chenango County, State of New York, but for the last ten months a resident of this place… Died, at the residence of her son, Mr. Samuel M. HILL, of this county, on Thursday evening, 30th ultimo, Mrs. Martha HILL, aged about 55 years. Mrs. HILL was a native of Fairfield District, South Carolina, but for the last five years a resident of this county… Died, at the residence of his father, near Cahawba, on the 30th ultimo, Jefferson George, son of Matt GAYLE, Esq., aged nine months and fifteen days. Died, in Tuscaloosa, on the 30th ultimo, of the tetanus or lockjaw, Mrs. Sarah A. GAYLE, wife of his Excellency, Hon. John GAYLE, in the 32nd year of her age… August 22, 1835: Departed this life, on Monday last, Mr. Stephen W. MAPLES, in the 39th year of his age, a resident of this place for the last six or seven years. Died, on Wednesday last, Martha Prior, daughter of Thomas N. GARDNER, aged four years, ten months. Married, on Wednesday last, at the residence of Thomas GIBSON, by Rev. Joseph D. LEE, Mr. Robert A. CAIN, formerly of York District, South Carolina, to Miss Nancy S. CAMPBELL, formerly of Wilson County, Tennessee, all of this county. Married, on the evening of the 12th instant, at Montevallo, Shelby County, by Rev. Joab LAWLER, Mr. George G. SHORTRIDGE, of Montgomery, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund KING, Esq. Died, in Montgomery, on Friday, 21st instant, Martha J., daughter of Mrs. Priscilla REYNOLDS, of this vicinity, an interesting and promising child, aged ten years and four days. Her remains were brought from Montgomery and interred in the graveyard near this place on Sunday morning last. Died, in this place, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. MAPLES, on Wednesday night last, Mrs. Ann WILLIAMS, at the advanced age of about 70 years. Died, at her mother’s residence, Mrs. WILLIAMS, in Perry County, on Saturday last, Mrs. Nancy DUKES, wife of Mr. Charles DUKES, of this vicinity, in the 20th year of her age. Died, in Wilcox County, on Monday last, John JENKINS, Attorney-at-law, a young gentleman of considerable promise. September 5, 1835: A misunderstanding having originated between Mr. Britton SIMMS and a Mr. MARR, at Cahawba, on Sunday last, an encounter ensued, which resulted in the death of the former by a pistol shot… Died, on the 10th ultimo, Grey, infant daughter of Samuel F. JONES, Esq., of this county, aged one year and seven days. Married, in this place, on Wednesday evening last, by Rev. Mr. REEVES, Mr. Andrew WALKER to Miss Sarah HUGHES, daughter of Mr. Joseph HUGHES. September 12, 1835: We regret to announce the death of Maj. F.W. ARMSTRONG, late of Nashville, Tenn., and principal agent for the Choctaw Indians. He died at the Choctaw Agency near Fort Coffee, on the 6th instant, after an illness of several days… -Southern Advocate Died, on the 1st instant, Lucy Esporian, daughter of Mr. William McELROY, of this county, aged seven years, two months and one day. Died, on the 29th ultimo, Mr. Joseph BAKER, of this county, in the 42nd year of his age. Died, at Blount Springs, 29th ultimo, after a long and protracted illness, Miss Aletha A.M. HILL, of this county. Died, on Sunday last, Edward, son of Capt. Thomas WHITE, of this county, in the fifth year of his age. September 19, 1835: Died, on Saturday last, Mrs. Mexico FERGUSON, wife of Mr. Thomas P. FERGUSON, in the 25th year of her age. Died, on Thursday last, James, youngest son of Mr. James W. BURKE, of this town. Died, on Tuesday last, Mrs. Judah Maria BRANTLEY, in the 23rd year of her age, wife of Harris BRANTLEY, Esq., of this county. Died, in this county, on the 13th instant, George Edward Bowie SMITH, eldest son of Capt. William S. SMITH, Jr., aged eight years and nearly three months… Died, at the residence of Dr. A. SALTMARSH, near Cahawba, on Thursday last, Mr. Horace WARD, aged 23 years. Died, at his residence in Pleasant Valley, on the evening of the 15th instant, after a short but painful illness, Dr. George PHILLIPS… The subject of this notice was of Irish parentage, and was born the 1st of May 1769, near the town of Charlotte, North Carolina… He commenced his professional career in Green County, Georgia, and from thence removed to Oglethorpe, where he resided for many years… He was a member of the Convention that framed our State Constitution… He left a wife and eight children (not named) to bemoan their irreparable loss. Died, at his residence near Cahawba, on Sunday evening, 13th instant, after a short but severe illness, Col. Thomas MORONG, of the firm of Thomas Morong & Company. This valuable citizen has departed in the prime of life leaving a widow and four small children to lament their loss. ESCAMBIA COUNTY Newspaper Transcriptions From The Escambia & Baldwin Times (Brewton, Ala.) -Transcribed by Larry E. Caver, Jr. October 12, 1887: Died, on October 2nd, with palsy, Mrs. Caroline TOWNSEND, near Flomaton, in the 52nd year of her age. She leaves four children to mourn her loss. Died, at his home in Escambia, Alabama, on September 3, 1887, Gibbert M. CRUIT, in the 72nd year of his age. He came from England to Alabama in early life and married Miss Louisa GALLASPIE, of Baldwin County, who survives him with seven children (not named)… October 19, 1887: James SEARCY, who it will be remembered, was crazy and was kept in jail here for some time, died at the Asylum last week. October 26, 1887: Married, on Wednesday, 19th instant, at the residence of the bride’s father in Brewton, Ala., Mr. E.S. McMILLAN, of Pollard, to Miss Katie LEIGH, of Brewton. (Bromley, Ala.) Tuesday at quarter after 12 o’clock, at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Louis DOLIVE, Mr. George WALKER, of New Orleans, and Miss Marcilliet DOLIVE were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. November 2, 1887: Married, at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. S.B. RICHARDSON, of Stockton, on October 27th, 1887, by M.M. ODOM, J.P., Mr. Joseph E. HUBBARD, of Escambia County, to Miss Candis D. RICHARDSON. June 27, 1888: Married, on 24th instant, at Williams Station at the residence of the bride’ s parents, Mr. T.R. PULLEN to Miss Hattie KNOTT, F.M. HUBBARD officiating. Newspaper Transcriptions From The Standard Gauge (Brewton, Alabama) Transcribed by Larry E. Caver, Jr. January 21, 1888: Died, on the 8th of January, near Douglasville, Mrs. Emma BLACK, in the 17th year of her age. She was a devoted member of the Methodist Church five years. After six long months of suffering, the Heavenly Father, who doeth all things well, hath seen fit to take her to a brighter and better home… Will PAYNE, colored, wanted at Greenville for the murder of another colored man named Sam DAVENPORT, was captured at Pensacola on the 14th instant. February 4, 1888: Married, at the Methodist Church, Castleberry, February 1st, Joseph W. SKINNER to Miss Nannie ELLIS; Rev. J.A. PETERSON officiating. Married, at the residence of the bride’s father, February 2nd, Mr. C.E. WEAVER, Jr. to Miss Caroline LINSEY; Rev. N.G. BAGGETT of McDavid’s officiating. Married, at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. George MANTLE to Miss Mary WEAVER; Rev. N.G. BAGGETT of McDavid’s officiating. George has distinguished himself for fishing in past years, but this is by far the biggest haul he has made up to date. March 11, 1888: Charles FOSTER, of the Indian Territory, who lost his wife and child in the blizzard, has hanged himself. February 18, 1888: The little son of Mrs. STURDEVANT of Pollard, while carelessly handling a pistol last Tuesday, shot his little sister through the abdomen, causing death in a short time. February 23, 1888: Died, at her home in Pollard, Alabama, February 14, 1888, Little Ethel STURDIVANT, aged four years… March 3, 1888: (Tensaw) On the 22nd, Mr. John F. DAVIS, of Brewton, was made the happy groom of Miss Lula M. MOORE, daughter of one of our prominent citizens… On the 15th, the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas BOYLE was burned… Mr. Willie CHAMBLISS, who kept a barroom at the head of Pine Log Creek, about ten miles above here, while riding with two others in an ox cart, was thrown by the oxen running, and was so badly injured that he died a few hours later… March 17, 1888: Died, at this place on the 7th instant, Mrs. Sarah J. SAWYER, in her 65th year. The deceased was born near Burnt Corn, Monroe County, in 1824. She united with the Baptist Church many years ago… She leaves an interesting family, all of whom reached the years of maturity, and who mourn her departure. Died suddenly, on the 10th instant, Mrs. Mary V. SOWELL, wife of John L. SOWELL, Sr.… The deceased leaves a sorrowing husband and five small children, one of them an infant about two months old, and a host of relatives and friends, to mourn her loss… Prof. W.H. FURGUSON, of Brewton, has been allowed a service pension as a Mexican veteran by Uncle Sam. March 24, 1888: (Milton, Fla.) The death of Miss Mamie McWHORTER, which occurred on Sunday, 12th instant, cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire community. She was one of Milton’s fairest gems and beloved by all who knew her… (Pollard) Willie, the little son of W.A. FINLAY, is very sick with bilious fever. Alco is just about to be incorporated. An election for city officers will soon be held… Mr. Joe LORANZ has been appointed notary public at Alco. Mrs. J.T. PORTER has a beautiful calla lilly in full bloom, the only one we believe in the city. March 31, 1888: James C. FOX, son of J.M. FOX of Bay Minette, a bright and promising youth of 19 years, was thrown from a horse several weeks ago and received injuries, which resulted in his death on the 27th instant. (Pollard) Mr. E.V. MILSTED, who was recently married to Miss Lula JACKSON on the Birmingham & Mobile Railroad, arrived in town with his bride last Friday evening. April 21, 1888: (Evergreen) Last week in the Circuit Court, John POSEY was tried for the murder of Samuel ELLIS, which it will be remembered occurred at Repton, this county, a year ago last Christmas… Married, at Castleberry, Ala., April 5th, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. R.M. BARRON to Miss Ida WHITE; Judge P.C. WALKER officiating… April 28, 1888: Mr. J. PORTER has been called to the bedside of his aged mother at Washington, Kansas. Married, at the Methodist Church, Brewton, April 25th, at 8:30 p.m., Mr. James HAROLD to Miss Arizona L. SEALE; Rev. A.C. HUNDLY officiating. Died, at her home near Brewton, on the night of the 25th instant, Mrs. Rebecca TIPPINS, aged 64 years. Died, April 27th, Mamie Jennie Floyd, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. FULTON, aged three months and two days. Funeral services at Pollard today at 2:00 o’clock.
