November 5, 1918
My Dear Mrs. M.V. SIMS,

Many weeks have passed since the death of your dear son, Private Edward J.
SIMS, 167 Infantry, Company A, and I have been so occupied with our many sick
and wounded soldiers that I have tried in vain to write you of your son’s
brief illness here… As a Red Cross visitor in Base Hospital No. 23, I saw Mr.
SIMS soon after he came to our hospital and talked with him before he became so
delirious that he did not realize when I was beside him… His illness was very
brief, the prevalent and fatal form of pneumonia, and having been in the
hospital but a few days he died at 6:00 a.m. on September 27th… I trust it will
comfort you to know that your boy did not died alone, but in this fine
American hospital… On September 28th at 3:00 p.m. he was buried with military
honors in the American Cemetery just outside of Vittel. It is on a lovely hilltop
overlooking the beautiful country and there he lies beside other American
soldiers, who like himself, have crossed the sea and died in the defense of
Liberty and peace… (Lengthy letter)

Sincerely yours,
Helen P. CHANDLEE
(American Red Cross)

I wish through the Banner to pay a brief tribute to my pupil and friend, Dr.

medicine amongst the people who had known him all his life. Then after only a
few months of service, he was stricken and was called to make the supreme
sacrifice… -submitted by Luther FOWLER
