Wanda Darlene Hall Cowan, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died Monday
in Mobile.
Survivors include four children, Gary Wayne Gurly, Angel Darlene Stokley,
Tina Marie Stokley and John Thomas Stokley; two sisters, Joann Howell and
Linda McDuffie; three brothers, Fred Hall, James Hall and Paul Anthony
Hall, all of Mobile; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home
on Dauphin Street. Graveside services are set for Friday at 2 p.m. at New
Hope Cemetery.
HORACE DAVIS SR.
VREDENBURGH - Horace Davis Sr., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II
and a deacon at First Baptist Church, died Sunday in an area nursing facility.
He was 77.
A native of Monroe County, Davis resided in Vredenburgh.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ellen Davis of Vredenburgh;
four sons, Melvin Davis of Brewton, Ala., Marvin Davis and Horace Davis,
both of Vredenburgh, and Anthony Davis Sr.; two daughters, Shirley Huff
of Greenville, Ala., and Judy L. Maye of Excel, Ala.; 18 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Services are set for Friday at 11 a.m. at Pine Flat Baptist Church,
with viewing from 10 a.m. until the service time. Interment will be in
First Baptist Community Cemetery, with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of
Jackson, Ala., in charge.
JEANETTE P. KONTOS
ENGLEWOOD, N.J. - Jeanette Pugh Kontos, a native Mobilian and resident
of Englewood for 35 years, died Monday after a lengthy illness. She was
60.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Dimitrios D. Kontos of Englewood;
one son, Richard Hurst of Baton Rouge, La.; her mother, Syble Sanford of
Chickasaw; two sisters, Betty P. McLean of Mobile and Emily Pugh Arellano
of Jackson, Miss.; and three brothers, Robert Pugh of South Carolina, Chester
M. Pugh of Demopolis, Ala., and Bobby Joe Pugh of Robertsdale.
Services are set for 11 a.m. today at St. John Theologian Greek Orthodox
Church in Tenafly, N.J., with interment in George Washington Cemetery in
Paramus, N.J. Barrett Funeral Home of Tenafly handled arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
GEORGE HENRY HERTEL
FOLEY - George Henry Hertel , a resident of Foley, died Wednesday, July
29, 1998, at the Mobile Infirmary.
He was 85 years old.
Hertel was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus
and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by two sons, George Hertel of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and
David Hertel of Tampa; a daughter, Mary Madison of Foley; a sister, Rose
Bitto of Elberta; a brother, Henry Hertel of Elberta; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today with Rosary recited at
8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew
Catholic Church in Elberta. Burial will be in Prince of Peace Cemetery.
SAMUEL P. MAGNUSON
PENSACOLA - Funeral services for Samuel P. Magnuson were held July 22,
1998, at Barrancas National Cemetery at Naval Air Station Pensacola, with
full military honors. Chaplain Ken Griffin presided.
A native of Baldwin County and a resident of Tacoma, Wash., Magnuson
died June 26, 1998, at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Wash., at the age
of 68.
He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the
Korean and Vietnam era. Duty stations included San Diego Naval Air Station,
Korea, the USS Ticonderoga, USS Forrestal, and USS Kitty Hawk.
Magnuson also retired from Olson Enterprises in Tacoma.
He is survived by his wife Terrell Magnuson of Tacoma; two sisters,
Evelyn Wilcox of Gulf Shores and Ellen Thomas of Foley; and one stepson.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to cancer research,
a favorite church or charity.
ADA MCDUFFIE LYLES
Ada McDuffie Lyles, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died July
30, 1998, in a Baldwin County hospital.
Mrs. Lyles was a member of Airport Boulevard Assembly of God.
She is survived by one son, Johnny Ray Lyles of Mobile; two daughters,
Betty Jean Hollingsworth of Mobile and Marsha Clay of Bay Minette; two
sisters, Goldie Reynolds of Mobile and Ida Baker of Huntsville; eight grandchildren
and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin
Street in Mobile. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of
the funeral home. Interment will be in Pierce Creek Cemetery.
RUBYE KIRK SLADE
DAPHNE - Rubye Kirk Slade, a longtime school teacher, died July 29,
1998, in a local nursing facility. She was 89.
Mrs. Slade, a native of Fayette County, lived in Daphne. She taught
for a total of 42 years in Fayette, Marengo and Mobile counties.
She was a member of the Spanish Fort United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Kelly LeRoux Slade of Spanish Fort; one daughter,
Rebecca Bennett of Fairhope; one brother, Henry Clay Kirk of Columbus,
Miss.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be tonight from 5 p.m. to 8 at Mobile Memorial Gardens
Funeral Home, where funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment
will take place in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
THE REV. ARCHIE CUMMINS STAPLETON
DAPHNE -- The Rev. Archie Cummins Stapleton, a resident of Sewanee,
Tenn., died Aug. 1, 1998. He was a former resident of Baldwin County.
Stapleton was born on Nov. 1, 1927. He was a retired Episcopal minister
and missionary to the Philippine Islands.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Lee Brown Stapleton; five children,
Archie Cummins Stapleton, Sarah Stapleton Calder, Mary Kelley Stapleton,
Margaret Stapleton and Rachel Stapleton Reavis; seven grandchildren; a
brother, David Crockett Stapleton; and one sister, Conchita Stapleton Gay.
Memorial services will be held in Sewanee, Tenn.
FANNIE LOU ROBINSON STEWART
ROBERTSDALE -- Fannie Lou Robinson Stewart, a native of Andalusia and
a resident of Robertsdale, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998.
She was 80 years old.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by a daughter, Pat Shore of Silverhill; two
sons, Jerry Robinson of Silverhill and Larry Robinson of Robertsdale; 11
grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Mack Funeral Home. Funeral
services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the
Rev. John Long and the Rev. Bill Murfin officiating. Burial will be in
Greenwood Cemetery in Loxley.

MOBILE COUNTY -- William O. Allen, a native and lifelong resident of
Mobile, died Monday in a local hospital. He was 76.
He is survived by his wife, Deverne Creel Allen of Mobile; one son,
William Paul Allen of Orange Beach; one brother, the Rev. Judd R. Allen
of Jackson, Miss.; one sister, Mary Catherine Smith of Mobile; and two
grandchildren.

MOBILE COUNTY -- Kathleen H. Lavene, a longtime resident of Wilmer,
died Monday in a local health-care facility.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Norton of Richmond, Texas; a brother,
Jack Hogan of Mobile; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

ALECK ZACHARIAS MARKIS
MOBILE COUNTY -- Aleck Zacharias Markis, a member of the Annunciation
Greek Orthodox Church, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Markis, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, served on the board
of directors of the Parish Council, was an active advisor of the Stewardship
Committee, past Greek Orthodox youth advisor for 20 years, past president
of Order of Ahepa, vice president Pedethia. He also received awards from
special Olympics for his work, was named Ahepean Man of the Year and more
recently an award naming a scholarship in his name at the University of
South Alabama.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Calogrides; two sisters, Adrianne
Kergis and Patsy Adams; a brother, Gus Markis all of Mobile.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Annunciation Greek
Orthodox Church with interment in Pine Crest Cemetery. Memorials may be
made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church trust fund.

MILDRED CARTER DUNAWAY
ATMORE -- Mildred Carter Dunaway, a native of Repton, Ala., and resident
of Atmore, died Saturday. She was 84.
Mrs. Dunaway was a member of the First Baptist Presbyterian Church.
She was retired from C.K. Carter General Store.
She is survived by one sister, Velma C. Bosenberg of Atmore.

THE REV. TOMMY D. STEWART
MOBILE COUNTY -- The Rev. Tommy D. Stewart, a native of Rankin County,
Miss., and resident of Semmes, died Sunday at a local hospital. He was
42.
Stewart was a pastor at Bread of Life Church in Mobile.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Stewart of Semmes; two sons, Terry
Duwayne Stewart and Jeremy Brandon Stewart of Semmes; one daughter, Kristin
Jalane Stewart of Semmes; his father, the Rev. Sid Stewart of Washington
County, Ala.; one brother, Timmy Stewart of Semmes; and two sisters, Sue
Faye Varnes of Leesburg, Miss., and Annette Weaver of Washington County.

MOBILE COUNTY -- Howard C. Randolph Jr., a native of Bladon Springs,
Ala and resident of Mobile, died Saturday in a local hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Joe Ann Randolph; six children, Wanda James,
Francine Brock, Cesedear Williams, Howard Demetrius Randolph, Phyllis Walker
and Howard C. Randolph III; two stepdaughters, Yolanda Etaff and Tiffany
McClure; three sisters, Alice Hosey, Daisy Cyrus and Nine Chaney all of
Mobile; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

BAY MINETTE James William McDonald, 68, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at
Mercy Medical in Daphne.
The Bay Minette resident was a mechanic and shop supervisor for the
Baldwin County Board of Education. He was a native of Uriah.
Survivors include his wife Ruby Little McDonald of Bay Minette; three
sons, Charles "Rickey McDonald, James Ray McDonald and Alan Wade McDonald,

THELMA MACFARLANE BATES
SPANISH FORT Thelma MacFarlane Bates, a native of Holyoke, Mass., and
a resident of Spanish Fort, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998 at a local health
care facility.
She was 87 years old.
Ms. Bates was a graduate of LaSalle Junior College. She was an active
member of the Performing Arts Association in Foley, the Foley Women's Club,
Friends of Foley Library and Clothes Closet. She was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church of Foley.

BAY MINETTE Lucy Mae Stephens, 84, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at her
Bay Minette residence. The homemaker was a native of Evergreen.
Survivors include her two sons, Earl Stephens Sr. of Silverhill and
Johnny Stephens of Cleveland, Miss.; a brother, N.C. Daniels of Huntsville;
two sisters, Myrtle Norwood of Monroeville and Nettie Johnson of Ocean
Springs, Miss.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Grace E. Lilley Dumas, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died
Tuesday at the family residence. She was 84.
She was employed with the Archdiocese of Mobile for 37 years as a cafeteria
manager at Little Flower and St. Mary's Catholic schools, and at Camp Cullen
summer camp.
She is survived by one son, Hyman B. Dumas of Mobile; two daughters,
Sharron Thompson of Irvington and Carol Stroecker of Mobile; one sister,
Kathleen Lilley Pooley of Mobile; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

John R. Burgess, a native of Calera, Ala., and resident of Mobile, died
Monday in a local hospital. He was 67.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in the Vietnam War.
He is survived by Patricia A. Burgess of Mobile; two sons Mike Burgess
of Mobile and Scott Burgess of Mobile; one daughter, Laura Edwards of Grand
Bay; one sister, Jimmie Pierce of Calera; and five grandchildren.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. George York, a native of Baldwin County and resident
of Brooklyn, died Friday at a local hospital. He was 81.
York was a former resident of Mobile.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Clarke York of Brooklyn; a sister,
Ella Mae Williams of Bay Minette; five daughters; six grandchildren; and
5 great-grandchildren.

Inez Bovis Moslander, an accomplished pianist and former piano teacher,
died Tuesday at a local hospital. She was 104.

Powell, an employee of the Mobile Mental Health Center, died Sunday
at a local residence.
Powell, a native and resident of Mobile, was a Vietnam veteran.
He is survived by his mother, Fannie Allen, and his father, Willie Powell
Sr.; two sons, Jared Wilson and Virgil Wilson; one adopted daughter, Lagretta
Swopes; six sisters, Fannie Holden-Williams, Diann Walker, Gloria Craig,

John E. Crider, a native of Jasper, Ala., who was a longtime resident
of Mobile, died Monday. He was 80.
He was a member of Government Street Presbyterian Church.

Undine Ariss Marshall
Undine Ariss Marshall, a native of Cardiff, Wales, who was a longtime
resident of Mobile, died Sunday in a local nursing facility. She was 85.
Mrs. Marshall was a retired purchasing agent for Spring Hill College
and an active member of the Mobile Theater Guild. She was a volunteer for
WHIL for several years.
She is survived by three sons, William Terence Marshall of Huntsville,
Kevin John Marshall of Portland, Ore., and Michael James Marshall of Mobile;
one brother, Arthur Ariss of Great Britain; two sisters, Yvonne Howell
and Betty Davis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at St. Ignatius
Catholic Church in Mobile.
Tyra "Ty Boutwell
tyra for 8/5,ROLLS -->MONROE, La. Tyra "Ty Boutwell, a retired claims
representative for Allstate Insurance Co., died Friday at his residence.
He was 74.
Boutwell, a native of Mississippi who lived in Monroe, La., was a member
of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the American Legion and Senior Citizen
Bass Club. He served as senior warden on the vestry and lay reader for
his church. He was past president of the Northeast Dance Club. He served
with the Navy in World War II in the Admiralty Islands off New Guinea,
as well as in the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Jewel Murff Boutwell of Monroe; two daughters,
Barbara Lynn Boutwell of Bossier City, La., and Cheryl Boutwell Lawrence
of Monroe; two sisters, Emma Brown of Mobile and Oree Breazeale of Purvis,
Miss.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in
Monroe. Interment was in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mulhearn Funeral
Home handled the arrangements.
