Alabama, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1805-1967 - 1814-1935

CALLAHAN
09-23-2004

Graveside services for George B. Callahan,77, will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 at Anniston Memorial Gardens. K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge.

Mr. Callahan died Sept. 18 at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jean Callahan; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Ralph Murray of Clyde, N. C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Duran and Margie Callahan of Piedmont; a brother, Doug Callahan of Wellington; two grandchildren, Ethan Murray and Emily Murray; and a great-granddaughter.

Mr. Callahan, an Anniston native, served in the Air Force 20 years. He received numerous medals and awards, including the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 57 and served as adjutant. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Willie Callahan, and a sister, Helen Callahan Oswalt.

HINTON
09-23-2004

Services for Helene King Hinton, 93, were at 2 .m. Sept. 15 at First Baptist Church with Revs. Bert Breland and Fred Taylor officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Attalla with K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in charge.

Mrs. Hinton died Sept. 13 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, June and Rodney D. Shirey of Jacksonville, Carol and Allen Bachrach of Alpharetta, Ga., and Janet and John McLeod of Ozark; a sister, Betty White of Anniston; and four grandchildren, Beth Bachrach, Franklin Bachrach, Landon Shirey and Lauren Shirey.

Pallbearers were Rodney Shirey, Allen Bachrach, John McLeod, Tom Hinton, Jim Hinton, Franklin Bachrach and Landon Shirey.

Mrs. Hinton was a member of First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and was a member of WMU, the Attalla Study Club and Jacksonville Book Club. She taught and was principal at Attalla Elementary School. She enjoyed flowers and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Mathews Hinton, and a brother, J. Fred King.

Memorials may be made to Big Oak Boys and Girls Ranches, 5265 Jake Mintz Road, Southside 35907; First Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 400, Jacksonville 36265; First Baptist Church, 607 Fifth St., N. W., Attalla 35954 or a favorite charity.

POORE
09-23-2004

Graveside services for Melvin H. Poore, 76, of Oxford, were at 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Oxford with Rev. Greg Dempsey officiating and Miller Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Poore died Sept. 17 at his residence.

Survivors include three brothers, Jimmy Poore of Indiana, David Poore of Oklahoma and Earl Poore of Jacksonville; a sister, Marvin Poore of Oxford; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Poore was a lifelong resident of Oxford. He was an Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Poore.

WHITAKER
09-23-2004

A private family service was held for Carey Walls Whitaker, 62, of Huntsville, formerly of Jacksonville. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Whitaker died Sept. 13.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Bebe and Robert A. Brown of Huntsville; a niece, Cynthia Ellen Brown of Washington, D. C.,; a nephew, Robert A. Brown Jr., and his wife, Anne, of Madison; a great-nephew, Robert A. Brown III; a great-niece, Elizabeth Ellen Brown and local cousins, Peggy Jean and Jerry Nelson Ledbetter.

Mr. Whitaker was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force and was retired from Army civil service.

Ferguson, Peggy Ann
09-02-2004

Services for Peggy Ann Goodson Ferguson, 71, were at 3 p.m. Aug. 29 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center chapel with Rev. Truman Norred officiating. Burial was in Green lawn Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Ferguson died Aug. 26 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Stanfield of Boaz and Alicia Ferguson of Atlanta; a sister, Avis Goodson Walker of Opelika; and two grandchildren, Casey Stanfield and Karen Stanfield.

Pallbearers were Shane Ferguson, Jerry McLeroy, Timothy Dryer, Mark Dryer Randy Burke and Larry Goodson.

Mrs. Ferguson was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Ruth Circle and the United Methodist Women. She had been employed with Dr. Charles Strange as office manager for many years and had worked for Dr. James Yates. She was a member of the Nannie Douthit Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover F. “Bunk” Ferguson Jr.

GILMORE
07-09-2004

Services for Carolyn B. Gilmore, 64, were at 11 a.m. July 2 at Hill Crest Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Reaves officiating. Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens Cemetery with Chapel Hill Funeral Home of Anniston in charge.

Mrs. Gilmore died June 29 at University Hospital in Birmingham.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rev. David Gilmore of Jacksonville and Dr. Rodney and Kim Gilmore of Hokes Bluff; three grandchildren, Rodney Seth Gilmore, Amy Elizabeth Gilmore and Lauren Lee Gilmore, and several nieces.

Mrs. Gilmore was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Gilmore; her mother and father, William O. Bobo and Sybil O. Bobo.

Pallbearers were Billy Ray Prestridge, Drew Rhodes, Jerry Nisbett, Gorden Lee Kelly, Bill Lamar, Marlin Hunter, Eddie Shortnancy and Terry Ponder. Honorary pallbearers were Men of Witness and Inspiration Sunday School Class of Hill Crest Baptist Church.

Mrs. Gilmore, a Calhoun County native, was a member of Hill Crest Baptist Church, where she served as director of Prayer Ministry. She was a homemaker and enjoyed scrapbooking.

LATHERS
07-09-2004

Services for Myra S. Lathers, 93, of Four Mile Community were at 11 a.m. July 7 at Four Mile United Methodist Church with Revs. Neale Lanigan, Davis Acker and David Hodnett officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in charge.

Mrs. Lathers died July 3 at Beverly Health Care Center in Oxford.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Myrna Louise and Anthony P. Waites of Munford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm Lance and Frances Jeanette Lathers of Four Mile Community and Merrill Lynn and Frances Harris Lathers of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a sister, Louise Scherer of Indianapolis; a brother, Theodore “Ted” Simcox of Farrandsville, Pa.; six grandchildren, Russell J. Lathers, Michael W. Lathers, Mitchell Lathers, Matthew Lance Lathers, Adam H. Lathers, and Erin L. Lathers; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lathers had lived in Calhoun County since 1952 and was a member of Four Mile United Methodist Church where she was on the trustees and administrative board. She was active in the community in Girl Scouts, PTA, and band boosters. She was a graduate of Lock Haven High School in Lock Haven, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Martin L. Lathers and a daughter, Madeline Lenore Lathers.
