John Manuel Smith
Services for John Manuel Smith, 85, of Blountsville will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at Blountsville Funeral Home Chapel, James Dennis officiating, with burial in Rock Springs Cemetery near Blountsville. The body will lie in state from 8:30 a.m. until the funeral.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Blountsville to Doc and Letha Mann Smith. He was a cattle farmer and was a member of Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Blountsville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Bryson Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Manuel (Rosemary) Smith of Blountsville, Danny (Diane) Smith of Birmingham; a daughter, Emilea (Jimmy) Copeland of Rainbow City; four grandchildren, Rex Copeland, Rene Copeland Bard, Chad Smith and Lana Holley; and two great-grandchildren, John and Alex Bard.

Pallbearers will be Donald Smith, Arnon Smith, Nolan Bagwell, Gerald Abercrombie, Kenneth Wilson and Don Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Carlton Brooks, Carrol Wilson and his nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today.

Carl Wade Thornton

Carl Wade Thornton, 50, of Summerville, S.C. died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002.

Tri-County Cremation Center in Summerville was in charge of arrangements.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Dora Thornton and Marvin and Bessie Wren Ragsdale.

Survivors include his wife, Debra E. Thornton of Summerville; his parents, Welcome C. and Vera Ragsdale Thornton of Cullman; and a sister, Ruby Thornton (the Rev. Charles T.) Gable of Cullman.

Horace Houston ‘Bill’ Hicks
Services for Horace Houston “Bill” Hicks, 93, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Sherman Bailey officiating, with burial in Duck River Cemetery in Walter.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hicks died Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Woodland Medical Center. He was born May 16, 1909 in Boaz to William Elijah Hicks and Rosa Hicks. He was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris Fay (Gleen) Baker and Verda Lee Giles; a son, Billy Ray (Barbara) Hicks; eight grandchildren, Charles (Enell) Baker, Larry (Regina) Baker, Cynthia (Jim Jr.) Day, Gerald (Linda) Giles, Valerie (Douglas) Ginas, Joyce (Donald) Gunter, Janet (Billy) Mackson and Jane (Gary) Wilson; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.

Julie Fallin Earl

Services for Julie Fallin Earl, 43, of Albertville, formerly of Blountsville, were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at Blountsville Funeral Home Chapel, Bobby Dunn and John Fallin officiating. Burial was in the Duck River Cemetery in Cullman.

Blountsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Earl died Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Marshall Medical Center-South in Boaz. She was born in Wisconsin to Claudie and Nancy Carden Fallin. She was a homemaker and member of Antioch Baptist Church near Blountsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Earl Fallin.

Survivors include a daughter, April Earl of Albertville; a son, Johnnie (Brandy Gray) Earl Jr. of Scottsboro; and two grandchildren, Zachary Earl and Hailey Earl.

Pallbearers were Tony Fallin, Randy Fallin, David Fallin, Keith Fallin, Mike Vise and Ricky Vise.

Sarah Eulene Morgan

Services for Sarah Eulene Morgan, 67, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Spry Chapel in Athens, Bruce Wagner officiating, with burial in Limestone Memorial Gardens.

Spry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morgan died Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Baptist Medical Center Princeton. She was born May 10, 1935 in Cullman County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include two sons, Barry L. Morgan of Beavercreek, Ohio and Ronald Morgan of Columbia, Tenn.; four sisters, Christine Hopper of Cullman, June See of Plantation Key, Fla., Earlene Rodgers of Cullman and Joyce Abbott of Cullman; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from noon until the funeral service today.

Mrs. R.Z. Thompson

Services for Mrs. R.Z. Thompson, 86, of Arab will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Union Grove Baptist Church, Randy Burtram and Larry Narrell officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Arab Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thompson died Thursday, Aug. 8 at Marshall Medical Center North. She was born Sept. 13, 1915 in Marshall County to John Milton and Lurie Waldrop Whitlock. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include five daughters, Sherry Merritt of Arab, Janet Casey of Arab, Judy Fike Fry of Lacey’s Spring, Wilma Ludwig and Sue Parrish, both of Texas; six sons, Randy Thompson of Tennessee, Gerald Thompson of Tennessee, Rev. Milton Thompson of Arab, Harold Thompson of Union Grove, Carter Thompson of Cullman and Roger Thompson of Tennessee; a brother, Theron Whitlock of Scant City; a sister, Bethaleen Conley Clemons of Scant City; 45 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation will be today from 6-9 p.m. at the Arab Memorial Chapel.

Elizabeth Jean Bailey
Elizabeth Jean Bailey, 58, of Crane Hill died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at Woodland Village Health Care. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Moss Service Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights, Mich.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bailey was born in Michigan on July 11, 1944 to John and Laura Wisniewski. She was a waitress.

Survivors include her husband, James Bailey; two daughters, Katherine Bailey, Kimberly Coon; three sons, James, John and Thomas Bailey; one brother, Joseph Wisniewski; one sister, Christine Dorsch; and five grandchildren.

Vera Lucille King

Services for Vera Lucille King, 78, of Arley will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, the Revs. Arnold Tate and Richard Bolin officiating, with burial in Pisgah Baptist Cemetery in Walker County.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King died Thursday, Aug. 8 at Pine Place Assisted Living Facility. She was born Dec. 11, 1923 to Freeman and Mervia Barton Drummond. She was a retired postal carrier. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher, members of Lady’s Auxiliary of the Gideons, and a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phillip E. King; one son, Robert “Bobby” Browning; Maxwell Drummond; Bill King; and Mary Jo Holmes.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Browning of Hillsborough, N.H., Christopher Browning of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one step-son, Ed King of Grass Lake, Mich.; two daughters, Brenda Faye Sherf of Allen Park, Mich., Kay Falen of Cullman; one step-daughter, Ruth Dawson of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Mildred Aaron of Alabaster, Nella Dean LeGrand of Knoxville, Tenn.; and 26 grandchildren.

The family will accept flowers or donations may be made to Alacare Hospice or to Gideons.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Vernon Dallas Presley

Services for Vernon Dallas Presley, 76, of Manchester, Tenn., will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at Coffee County Funeral Chapel, Bill Adams and the Rev. Perry Knight officiating, with burial in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Coffee County Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Presley died Thursday, Aug. 8 at Centennial Medical Center. He was born in Cullman on Nov. 7, 1925 to Dallas Vernon and Hettie Mae Guthrie Presley. He was a heavy equipment mechanic for Ed C. Levy in Trenton, Mich., and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He attended Temple Baptist Church in Manchester, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Glera Presley of Manchester, Tenn.; four daughters, Kim (Rick) Parsley, Karren (Larry) Chandler both of Manchester, Tenn., Kathy (Mark) Wishart of Indianapolis, Ind., Kellie (Jerry) Potter of Trenton, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Steven and Scott Parsley, Sara Howell and Scott Wishart, Cody and Casey Chandler, Joshua and Jenna Potter; and one sister, Lorene Lynn of Cullman.

Visitation will be from 2 to 10 p.m. today.

Henry Millard Black
Services for Henry Millard Black, 73, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at Duck River Baptist Church, the Rev. Lenard Nail officiating, with burial in Duck River Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Black died Saturday, Aug. 10. He was born in Cullman on Sept. 18. 1928 to Isaac B. and Fannie Elizabeth Bice Black. He was veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheron Black of Walter, Gwen Parker of Cullman; brother, Dillard Black of Hanceville; five grandchildren, Bo James Black, Casey Black, Sandy Jo Black, Kristi Parker, Tiffany Parker; and his ex-wife, Ezma Black of Walter.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Annie Mae Gooch

Services for Annie Mae Gooch, 85, will be at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home with burial in Emeus Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Gooch died Saturday, Aug. 10 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Monteagle, Tenn. She was born in Bibb County on Feb. 6, 1917. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her brother, George Willard Allen of Mississippi; three nephews, Charles Powell of Washington, Harold Powell of Indiana, Rufus Powell of Cullman; and three nieces, Clara Harrell of Cullman, Margaret Runge of Vinemont, Roselle Allan of Jefferson County.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Jennifer Kay Freeman

Services for Jennifer Kay Freeman, 24, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Raymond Brown and Jeremy Hudgins officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Freeman died Thursday, Aug. 8 at Huntsville Hospital. She was born in Pontiac, Ill., on June 29, 1978. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Christina Lyons; and her grandparents, Pauline and Ray Lyons and Marquis Pruitt.

Survivors include her husband, Tim Freeman of Cullman; parents, David and Rita Kay McGuire of Chenoa, Ill.; father- and mother-in-law, Jerry and Donna Freeman of Cullman; grandmother, Reta Mae Pruitt; brother, Tony Lyons of Chenoa, Ill.; step-brother, David Shane McGuire of Milan, Ill., and sister-in-law, Sarah Graham of Georgia.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
