Verlon D. McSwain

Funeral services for Verlon D. McSwain, 80, of Bremen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Johnson Grove Methodist Church, the Revs. Ron Foshee and Johnny Freeman officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McSwain died Wednesday, Oct. 9 at his residence. He was born May 9, 1922 to Le and Martha Freeman McSwain. He was a poultry farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Evon McSwain; and a sister, Vaulene McSwain.

Survivors include his wife, Merle Williams McSwain; a son, Danny (Shirley) McSwain; a daughter, Shirlene (Jim) Abbott; two brothers, Duel (Gearldean) McSwain and Elvin (Mary) McSwain; two sisters, Veola (J.B.) Cordes and Ilavee (Malcolm) Brown; a sister-in-law, Allie McSwain; seven grandchildren, Jeffery (Lisa) Abbott, Jonathon Abbott, Belinda (Phillip) Nesmith, Darlynda (Barry) Ozbolt, Kenneth (Tammy) McSwain, Kimberly (Tim) Locke and Jimmy May; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Billy M. Wise

Funeral services for Billy M. Wise, 47, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Rev. Roger Shockley officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wise died Thursday, Oct. 10 at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair after a seven-month battle with leukemia. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Donna Blake Wise; his parents, Billy and Ruth Hunt Wise of Cullman; a brother, Tony (Trish) Wise of Hanceville; a sister, Sonya (Mike) Gibbs of Hanceville; his parents-in-law, Charles and Ruby Blake of Cullman; a sister-in-law, Dianna (Jim) Jenkins of Cullman; three nieces, Tammy and Monica Gibbs, Erin Wise; and two nephews, Jimmy (Laura) Jenkins and Lesley (Nadine) Jenkins, both of Hanceville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Claude L. Powell

Funeral services for Claude L. Powell, 83, of Good Hope will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Revs. Dudley Brock and Steve Rogers officiating, with burial in Center Hill Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Powell died Thursday, Oct. 10 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was an air force veteran. He worked many years as a chef in Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John David and Nancy Smith Powell.

Survivors include three sisters, Mae Hulse of Decatur, Veleara Lindsey and Frances Hearst of Doniphan, Mo.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Wayne Stanley

Memorial services for Wayne Stanley, 64, of Warrior will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at New Horizon Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Wayne Williams officiating.

New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stanley died Wednesday, Oct. 9 at his residence. He was a crane operator with 30 years of service for General Motors Corp., and a member of the U.A.W. local in Athens.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Stanley.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Stanley; three daughters, Brenda, Patricia and Judy; two stepdaughters, Jennifer and Paula; his mother, Mary Ann Stanley of Greenville, Ky.; four sisters, Charlotte Lear, Gloria Stamps, Joan Johnson and Geraldine Stanley; two brothers, Glenn Stanley and Owen Ray Stanley; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Marvin Leon Thomas
Funeral services for Marvin Leon Thomas, 70, of Holly Pond will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002 at Pleasant View Baptist Church, with burial in Holly Pond Cemetery. The body will lie in state an hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas died Friday, Oct. 11 at his residence. He was born April 24, 1932 in Blount County to Roscoe B. and Golden Cain Thomas. He was a farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Survivors include his father; his wife, Ival Lou James Thomas of Holly Pond; two sons, Russell (Linda) Thomas of Holly Pond and David (Terri) Thomas of Logan; two daughters, Cynthia (Mark) Tarvin and Angela (Paul) Barbee both of Holly Pond; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Rosa Powell

Funeral services for Rosa Powell, 89, of Davey, Fla., formerly of Cullman, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, with burial in Eidson Chapel Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Powell died Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was born May 6, 1913 in Morgan County to Robert and Emily Wearly Marks. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include six sons, Alvie Powell and Donald Powell both of Davey, Fla., Odis Powell of Cullman, Ronald Powell of Waverly, Ky., William Powell and Edward Powell of both Interlachen, Fla.; three daughters, Ruth Clayton of Crossville, Dorothy Hewett of Lamervile, Ga., and Shirley Duvalle of Ocala, Fla.; and 26 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Emmett Lee Millwood

Funeral services for Emmett Lee Millwood, 66, of Cleveland will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Fowler Springs Baptist Church, the Revs. Elwyn Williamson and Michael Murphree officiating, with burial in Fowler Springs Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Millwood died Wednesday, Oct. 9 at his residence. He was a retired checker from Ryder Truck Lines after 30 years and was a member of Fowler Springs Baptist Church. He served in the National Guard for seven and a half years.

He was preceded in death by parents, George Washington and Annie Sue Eller Millwood; and his brother, Eulice Millwood.

Survivors include wife, Shirley Posey Millwood of Cleveland; a son, Michael Millwood of Cleveland; a daughter, Melinda (Larry) Zanders of Oneonta; three brothers, Jack Millwood, Norris Millwood both of Blountsville, Carl Millwood of Snead; a sister, Maxine Serling of Berry Mountain; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Friday.

Wilma Norris Moon

Funeral services for Wilma Norris Moon, 67, of Nauvoo were Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at Radiant City Baptist Church, Jimmy Davis and Leroy Dutton officiating, with burial in Ashbank Cemetery.

Collins-Burke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moon died Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Baptist Medical Center Princeton in Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Annie Bell Norris; a granddaughter, Shannon Moon Graham, a daughter-in-law, Darlene Moon; six brothers, Alfred Norris, Waymon Norris, A.D. Norris, Obie Norris, Dell Norris and Bedford Norris; and a sister, Polly Nelson.

Survivors include her husband, Jessie Ray Moon of Nauvoo; two daughters, Sandra (James) Gaddy of Double Springs and Gayle (Jerry) Vickery of Nauvoo; two sons, Kenny (fianceé Jeanette McCarty) Moon of Dora and Dion (Debra) Moon of Double Springs; a twin sister, Velma Bonner of Nauvoo; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.

Lula Geneva Oliver
Funeral services for Lula Geneva Oliver, 83, of Vinemont’s Corinth Community will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, 2002 at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, Michael Smith, Wayne Jetton and the Rev. Jack Nelson officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state an hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Oliver died Friday, Oct. 11 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born in Cupp, Tenn., on Feb. 2, 1919 to James and Amanda Bowling Marlow. She worked at Water Valley Sewing Plant.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Glenn Ray; one grandson, Kevin Westmoreland; four brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Mickey (Roland) Westmoreland of Corinth; brother, Rev. Samuel (Lillian) Marlow Sr. of Xenia, Ohio; sister-in-law, Nannilou Marlow of FaFollette, Tenn.; granddaughter, Michela Wade of Corinth; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary Westmoreland, Kendra Westmoreland, Jennifer Wade, Kailee Wade, Kevin Wade.

Visitation was Saturday.

John Winford Dodson

Funeral services for John Winford Dodson, 82, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, J.W. Hicks officiating, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dodson died Friday, Oct. 11 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Cullman County on Nov. 22, 1919 to John Homer and Lola Stisher Dodson. He was a retired school teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Oletus Holmes Dodson; brother, Ralph Dodson; sister, Montez Pylant; and grandson, Tracy Dodson.

Survivors include his son, Reggie “Dok” (Judy) Dodson of Cullman; daughter, Sandy Dodson of Homewood; three sisters, Audrey Mae Harris, Tavie (Bud) Smith both of Cullman, Libby Jo McCown of Trussville; grandson, Barry (Candace) Dodson; and great-grandchild, Sydney Dodson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cullman County Hospice.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today.

Barbara Joan Townsend

Funeral services for Barbara Joan Townsend, 66, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Dewey Briscoe officiating, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Townsend died Saturday, Oct. 12 at Woodland Medical Center. She was born in Cullman County on Nov. 4, 1936 to Willie Adell and Ruby Shikles Maner. She was a retired sales clerk at The Calico Shop.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Townsend of Cullman; son, Harold (Deborah) Townsend Jr. of Vinemont; three daughters, Jan (Alan) Adams of Cullman, Joan (Gary) White of Crane Hill, Linda (David) Briscoe of Vinemont; and eight grandchildren, Tara Adams, Casey Adams, David White, Matthew White, Jenny White, Brittney Townsend, Riley Briscoe, Katelynn Briscoe.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
