James Johnson McElroy
Funeral services for James Johnson McElroy, 80, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Junior Hill officiating, with burial in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Decatur.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McElroy died Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Nov. 5, 1921 in Sumter County to James and Mary Lou Johnson McElroy. He was a retired clerk for U.S. Steel and a member of the U.S. Army Air Force, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Evelyn Baker.

Survivors include his wife, Edith McElroy of Cullman; a son, Leslie “Sam” (Teresa) McElroy of Milan, Tenn.; two sisters, Jennie Strickland of Pensacola, Fla. and Bessie Mae Chestnut of Selma; and two grandchildren, Anthony and Garrett McElroy.

Visitation was Wednesday.

Fred M. Motes

Funeral services for Fred M. Motes, 83, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. Harold Hermetz officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Motes died Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Cullman County on July 15, 1919 to Richard and Daisy Motes. He was a retired agent for Liberty National Life Insurance Company, a senior life underwriter and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Ruth; and two brothers, Chester and Millard.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Jo Motes of Hanceville; a daughter, Betty (Jim) French of Huntsville; a son, Kenneth (Patricia) Motes of Leoma, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Beth (Jay) Seegers of Winter Garden, Fla., Cindy (Todd) Hunter of Orlando, Fla., Melanie French of El Cerrito, Calif., Captain David (Sarah) Motes of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Captain Lee (Vassa) Motes of Los Angeles, Calif., and second lieutenant Kerry (Cheryl) Motes of Ft. Irvin, Calif.; and nine great-grandchildren, Tyler and Merrin Seegers, Jake and Katie Hunter, Molly, Alex, Bella, Emma and Kaitlyn Motes.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Arlie Cale Welch

Funeral services for Arlie Cale Welch, 86, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel with burial in Simcoe Methodist Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Welch died Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Woodland Medical Center. He was born in Alabama on Aug. 25, 1916 to Samuel Cephus and Minnie Lou Shaw Welch. He was a factory worker at Americold.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Arlie Welch Jr.; two brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Merle Mildred Deese Welch of Cullman; three daughters, Juanita (Robert) Osborn, Glenda (Wendell) Harris, Leesa Ann Federer all of Cullman; one brother, Clifford Welch of Cullman; four sisters, Gladys Miller of Seattle, Wash., Marie Whatley of Texas, Ollie Painter of Bacoda, Wash., Mervaline Speegle of Alabama; five grandchildren, Danny Harris, Jamie Harris, Brandi Richter, Shanna Richter, Nathan Richter; and three great-grandchildren, Justan Harris, Jade Harris, Brandon Richter.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Cranford William Thompson
Funeral services for Cranford William Thompson, 69, of Vinemont will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Faith Baptist Church, Randy Makemson and Bobby Stancil officiating, with burial in Vinemont First Baptist Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thompson died Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1932 in Cullman County to William Thomas and Carlue Ardonia Adams Thompson. He was a sheet metal worker for Schaefer Plumbing Co., a veteran of the U.S. Army in Germany from 1953 to 1957 and served in the Korean War. He was president of the Vinemont Booster Club, a volunteer reserve deputy during the Buell Graves administration, a member of the Sheriff’s Citizen Academy and he assisted in the Sheriff’s Reassurance Program. He was a member of the Sassy Sixties String Band at the Cullman Senior Center and was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Gail Raines Thompson of Vinemont; a son, Tracy William (Chrystie) Thompson of Cullman; a daughter, Robin Renea Bagwell of Ocean Springs, Miss.; three brothers, Armon (Wynell) Thompson, Joel (Thelma) Thompson and Sammy (Marsha) Thompson; four sisters, Doris (Jim) Shellhouse, Margie (John) Thomas, Lavondia (John) Williams and Linda Robinson; and three grandchildren, Drew Bagwell, Brooke Bagwell and Madison Thompson.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Robert L. Hollis

Funeral services for Robert L. Hollis, 82, of Hanceville will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, the Revs. Trueman G. Davis and Derald Briscoe officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hollis died Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Woodland Village Health Care Center. He was born April 26, 1920 in Jefferson County to James and Bertha Hollis. He was a retired farmer, preacher, salesman, and Pinkerton Security Guard. He was also a volunteer in the Johnson Crossing Fire Dept.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sarah Inez Helms Hollis; his second wife, Virginia Dotson Hollis; a son, Donald Lee Hollis; and a brother, Elbert Hollis.

Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Young and Molly Chesser; two sons, Charles Hollis and Robert Hollis Jr.; six grandchildren, Heather Hollis, Sonja Hollis of Houston, Texas, Greg Young and Beth Young of Hanceville, Keith Chesser II of Cullman and John Chesser of Houston; two sons-in-law, Leo Young of Hanceville and Keith Chesser of Cullman; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hollis of Channelview, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Emma McDowell

Funeral services for Emma McDowell of Hanceville will be announced by Cullman Heritage Funeral Home.

Tavie Mae Mathis

Funeral services for Tavie Mae Mathis, 96, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of Holly Pond, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at Holly Pond Chapel, the Rev. Hunky Blackwood officiating, with burial in Crossroads Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mathis died Sunday, Oct. 13, at Westpark Nursing Home in Evansville, Ind. She was born Jan. 13, 1906 in Carrollton, Ga. to Albert and Lillie Lowry Duke. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Henry Mathis; and four sons, James Ardis Mathis, Robert Benjamin Mathis, Franklin Eugene Mathis, and Ray Edward Mathis.

Survivors include a son, Travis “Red” Mathis of Evansville, Ind.; a brother, Calvin Duke of Boaz; 25 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.

Audrey Aldredge Pedlow

Funeral services for Audrey Aldredge Pedlow, 99, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. McGweeny officiating, with burial in Emeus Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pedlow died Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Woodland Village Health Care. She was born Aug. 29, 1903 to Robert Glenn and Emma Quattlebaum Howard. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Pedlow was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Pichelmayer; a daughter-in-law, Billie J. Alldredge; two sisters, Mattie Oden and Flora Graham; a brother, Hugh Howard; nine grandchildren, Charles Pichelmayer, Gregory Pichelmayer, Jane Glenn Dalton, Susan Merritt, David Alldredge, James Alldredge, Terry Alldredge, Tammy Fredrichs, Michael Alldredge; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation for friends will be at 6 p.m. today.

Sybil C. Bryant

Funeral services for Sybil C. Bryant, 76, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Mac Buttram officiating, with burial in Crestwood Cemetery in Gadsden.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bryant died Thursday, Oct. 17, at her residence. She was born May 29, 1926 to Emmett and Nell Kilpatrick Carnes. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Philip Anthony Bryant.

Survivors include her husband, Olin W. Bryant; two sons, Rick (Donna) Bryant and Gene (Mary) Miller; and three grandchildren, R.J. Bryant, Kira Bryant and Stacia Hernstrom.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Mae Emma Hudson

Funeral services for Mae Emma Hudson, 61, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at Center Hill Baptist Church, the Rev. Bobby Crawford officiating, with burial in Fairview West Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hudson died Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair. She was born in Jefferson County on Dec. 27, 1940 to James T. and Mae Hogan Hicks. She was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, the Rev. Donald Hudson; a grandson, Ryan Hudson; two brothers, Jimmy and Billy Hicks; and a sister, Joan Sadberry.

Survivors include three sons, Keith (Karyn) Hudson and Donny (Angie) Hudson, both of Hanceville, and Paul (Peggy) Hudson of Cullman; a daughter, Melissa (Sherry Tabor) Hudson of Hanceville; a stepson, Ken Gregor of Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Amber, Wayne, Alecia, Michael, Bryana, Alex, and Brooke Hudson; two step-grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Gregory; a great-grandson, Cameron Hudson; a brother, Ray Hicks of Birmingham; and a sister, Gail Nichols of Georgia.

Funeral services for Eulas Ronmon Graves, 85, of Jasper will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, Hale Terry officiating, with burial in Johnson Grove Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Graves died Friday, Oct. 18 at his residence. He was born March 5, 1917 to George R. and Louie Evelyn Morgan Graves. He was a retired coal miner and a member of U.M.W.A. and New Hope Primitive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Calvert Graves; two sons, Donald (Barbara) Graves of Jasper and Blair (Frances) Graves, all of Jasper; two brothers, Buell (Nellie) Graves of Cullman and Norman (Pat) Graves of Cold Springs; two sisters, Vetra Arnold and Glader Creel; three grandchildren, Becky Graves of Jasper, Alan (Nicole) Graves of Athens, Donna (Allan) Haynes of Knoxville, Tenn.; and three great-grandchildren, Krista and Jennifer Graves of Athens and Anna Haynes of Knoxville, Tenn.

Pallbearers will be Alan Graves, Allen Haynes, Estal Pate, James Strickland, Robert Creel and Jimmy Arnold.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
