Nora B. Pugh Johns

Funeral services for Nora B. Pugh Johns, 78, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Wayne Williams officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johns died Thursday, Dec. 5 at her residence. She was born Nov. 4, 1924 in Walker County to John Thomas and Mamie Moore Pugh. She was a factory worker for Arrow Shirt Company.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin Johns; two brothers, Buddy and Hester Pugh; five sisters, Mary Lou Rainey, Ruby Cannon, Hattie Colburn, Lizzie Ragsdale, and Ada Light; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include three sons, Coleman (Margie) Ragsdale of Hayden, Buddy (Macy) Johns of Vinemont, Edward “Monkey” Johns of Cullman; a sister, Ruth Williams of Bremen; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Sarah Mae Burney

Funeral service arrangements for Sarah Mae Burney, 4, of Cullman are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the funeral home.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Mae Burney
Funeral services for Sarah Mae Burney, age 4, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, Jack Smith officiating, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died Dec. 5 at Fort Payne Hospital. She was born Aug. 28, 1998, in Franklin County.

Survivors include her parents, Ricky and Mary Frillman Burney; grandmother, Bertie Mae Burney; great-grandmother, June Goodman; brothers Dustin Seth Burney, Danny William Strong, David Strong, Rickey Strong, Christopher Burney, Rickey Lee Shelane Burney and Joshua Adam Frillman; sisters, June Denise Burney, Amy Elizabeth Frillman and Dusty LaDonna Burney.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Roy Bernard Downs

Services for Roy Bernard Downs, 76, of Walter will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Home, Sherman Bailey officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He died Dec. 6 at his residence. He was born March 15, 1926 in Elmore County to Willie B. and Pearl Hall Downs.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Downs of Walter; a son, Paul (Robbie) Downs of Cullman; two daughters, Brenday (Larry) Pruitt of Cullman and Linda Sanford of Montgomery; two sisters, Pauline Ervin of Marion and Maxine Tyrone of Wetumpka; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Saturday.

Carlena Burkey

Graveside services for Carlena Burkey, 98, of Jeffersonville, Ky., formerly of Cullman County, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burkey was born Sept. 5, 1904, the daughter of the late Fredrick and Cinthia Smith Mitchell. She died Dec. 5 in Mt. Sterling, Ky.

She is survived by a son, Tom Lafong of Jeffersonville, Ky.; a sister, Alice Koogler of Hanceville; a brother, Herbert Mitchell of Hanceville; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren.

Jerry Edward Haynes

Services for Jerry Edward Haynes, 38, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Randy Sellers officiating, with burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He died Dec. 7 at his home. He was born Oct. 27, 1964 in Arab, the son of Roy Edward and Ruby Juanita Perry Haynes. He was employed as a computer operator at Intergraft.

Survivors include his mother; a son, Krel Haynes of Joppa; a brother, Jimmy Haynes of Cullman; and a half-brother, Terry Hurst of Hanceville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret Jane Wisener

Services for Margaret Jane Wisener, 51, of Hanceville will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Joyce Tyson officiating, with burial in Holly Pond Cemetery. Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died Dec. 6 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 11, 1951, in Evergreen, the daughter of Hollie Mae Diamond. She was a machine operator at Nicholson File.

She is survived by a daughter, Laura Norman of Holly Pond; a sister, Deleradale Salter of Evergreen; and one grandchild.

Visitation was Saturday.

Dorothy Newby Branton

Dorothy Newby Branton, 72, of Lester died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. Funeral services will be announced by McConnell Funeral Home of Athens.

Marvin Francis Hembree
Funeral services for Marvin Francis Hembree, 72, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, David McDonald and Tommy Blackwood officiating, with burial in Cross Roads Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hembree died Saturday, Dec. 7 at his residence. He was born Jan. 3, 1930 in Cullman County. He was an auto mechanic.

He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Hembree; a brother, Pete Hembree; a sister, Willene McBrayer; and his parents, Ira O. and Myrtie Wix Hembree.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Carol Hembree of Cullman; two brothers, Jimmy L. Hembree of Logan and David Hembree of Cullman; a sister, Louise Tapscott of Decatur; five grandchildren, Michael Hembree, Christopher Hembree and Tony Hembree all of Athens, Dianne Hembree of Cullman and Tabotha Reed of Clarksville, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren, Gabi Hembree, Vivien Hembree, Chesley Reed, Devin Reed, and Amber Reed.

Visitation was Monday.

Vera Lucille Sweed

Funeral services for Vera Lucille Sweed, 83, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Joyce Tyson officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sweed died Saturday, Dec. 7 at her residence. She was born Aug. 27, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Anna Veronica Frech Shafer; her husband, Dr. Eli W. Sweed; and two sisters, Genevive Sandora and Ida Young.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandy Sweed, Beverly (Phil) Taylor and Janet (Paul) Suggs; two sisters, Myrle Zarlengo and Agnes DeBernado; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Foundation of Jesus or Life Care Hospice.

Visitation was Monday.

Dorothy Newby Branton

Funeral services for Dorothy Newby Branton, 72, of Lester will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at McConnell Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Ray Blankenship officiating, with burial in Athens City Cemetery.

McConnell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Branton died Saturday, Dec. 7 at her residence. She was born Sept. 12, 1930 in Limestone County to John Allison and Mamie Reid Newby. She moved back to Limestone County in 1988 after having lived in Dearborn Heights, Mich. for 40 years where she retired after working 15 years at Allen Park, Michigan State Veterans Hospital where she was a dietitian. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, a mother, grandmother and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Willis “Bill” Branton Sr. of Lester; a daughter, Joann B. Clark of Danville; three sons, Bill Branton Jr. and Pete Branton both of Athens, and Jim Branton of Sterling Heights, Mich.; three sisters, Katherine Ultz, Mary Terry and Jonnie Newby all of Athens; and 12 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Madison County Alacare and Madison County Hospice, 1-888-355-2505.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Ultz, Steve Stringer, Ted McLemore, Ricky Gaston, Royce Hall and Herman Beasley.

Visitation was Monday.

Marian Beacham Vaughan

Funeral services for Marian Beacham Vaughan, 83, of Blountsville will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at Blountsville Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Gilbreath Cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Vaughan died Saturday, Dec. 7 at TLC Nursing Home in Oneonta. She was born in Lowell, N.C. to Edward and Belle Wansley Beacham. She was a retired waitress, having worked at Ed Salem Restaurant in Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Vaughan; and her parents.

Survivors include three sons, Ken Guest of Blountsville, Jamie Bettis of Tampa, Fla., and Donnie Bettis of Durham, N.C.; two daughters, Eleanor Strickland and Dorothy Mercer of Elberton, Ga.; a sister, Wilma Sanders of Athens, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Stephen Guest of Argo, Shawn Guest and Seth Guest of Blountsville.
