Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Margaret Winn

Funeral services for Elizabeth “Liz” Margaret Winn, 42, of Danville will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at Roselawn Chapel, the Rev. Martin Steelmon officiating, with burial in Roselawn Cemetery.

Roselawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Winn died Wednesday, Jan. 15 at her residence. She was born May 30, 1960 in Cullman County.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Brown.

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Lee McPherson of Danville; her parents, Edna and Joseph Manning; two sons, Thomas Jefferson Fortner and Larry David Fortner; three daughters, Shannon Nicole Austin, Jennifer LeeAnn Fortner, Amy Elizabeth Fortner, all of Decatur; a sister, Shela Kay Gillam of Cleveland; a brother, Raymond Mac Brown of Cullman; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Timothy Lee McPherson, Chuck McPherson, Joseph Manning, and David Fortner.

Visitation was Friday.

Helen Kennedy Chandler

Funeral services for Helen Kennedy Chandler, 87, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at Chandler Funeral Chapel in Vernon, Jon Creel and Rev. Ferrell Milligan officiating, with burial in Emmaus Cemetery in Vernon.

Chandler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Chandler died Friday, Jan. 17 at Victorian Manor in Hanceville. She was born in Lamar County on Aug. 26, 1915 to Clinton L. and Addie Hankins Kennedy. She was a homemaker, Sunday School teacher and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 54 years, Arlie Chandler.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Robert) Creel of Hanceville and Meredith “Mitzi” (Harold) Smallwood of Cullman; three grandsons, Hal (Tia) Smallwood, Clint (Kristi) Creel and Jon (Kim) Creel; four great-grandchildren, Daniel and Will David Smallwood, Warren Creel and Emily Creel; two sisters, Mary Lee Gilmer of Vernon and Julia Maddox of Jasper; and a brother, Hunter Kennedy of Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship Funds, in care of Thelma Freeman, 1639 Woodland St. NW, Cullman 35055.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at North Side Church of Christ in Hanceville.

William Gerald Green

Graveside funeral services for William Gerald Green, 82, of Tuscaloosa, are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at Blountsville Cemetery, Bob Curlee officiating.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Green died Thursday, Jan. 16 at Vetarans Affairs Hospital in Tuscaloosa. He was born Oct. 30, 1920 to William and Hatie Gilmore Green . He was a retired Alabama State Trooper and a member of Center Crest Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Doyle Green of Birmingham; a son, Carroll Green of Birmingham; a step-son Ken Osborn of Blountsville; a daughter, Tammy Henderson of Birmingham; a step-daughter, Diane Gibbs of Birmingham; sister, Jean Finleyson of Montgomery; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Albert Cecil Cates
Funeral services for Albert Cecil Cates, 83, of Bremen, are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Rev. Dillon Calvert officiating, with burial in Cold Springs Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cates died Friday, Jan. 17. He was born May 17, 1919 in Jefferson County to Elijah and Ollie Price Cates.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille Washington Cates and two grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons, Cecil Cates, Don Cates, Mike Cates and Wayne Cates; two daughters, Jewel Williams and Shirley Willoughby, all of Bremen; a brother, John Cates of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Eula Lane of Hayden and Jean Sanders of Mount Olive; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Saturday.

Betty O. Green

Funeral services for Betty O. Green, 54, formerly of Cullman, are at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Oakland Cemetery in Ensley.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Green died Thursday, Jan. 16. She was born May 2, 1948 in Warner Robins, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Ernest Green III.

Survivors include two daughters, Samantha Roberson and Latasha L. Green ; two sons, Joseph A. Roberson and Bradley S. Green ; a sister, Barbara Owens; and a brother, Charles Owens.

Cleo Simmons Hart

Graveside funeral services for Cleo Simmons Hart, 79, of Sebastin, Fla., are at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hart died Thursday, Jan. 16 at Surry Place Nursing Home in Florida. She was born July 4, 1923 to Henry Lee and Bertie Lindsay Simmons. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clarence, Willard and Hershel Simmons; two sisters, Clara Duncan and Sue Knott; and a grandson, Larry Lee Hart Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Andrew Hart of Florida; her son, Larry Lee Hart Sr.; a brother, Windle Simmons of Cullman; three sisters, Mary (Ray) Rasinski of Belle View, Fla., Betty Jean (Raymond) Burgett of Gardendale and Cora Lee McNeil of Hanceville; and four grandchildren.

There will be no visitation.

Billie Gordon Hays
Funeral services for Billie Gordon Hays, 84, of Hanceville will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at Eidson Chapel, the Rev. Floyd Bradford officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hays died Monday, Jan. 20 at his residence. He was born June 17, 1918 to Nathanial and Nellie Martin Hays. He was retired from U.S. Steel in Birmingham after 30 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James Henry Hays.

Survivors include a brother, Rayford (Jean) Hays of Cullman; two sisters, Jo LaGrone of Tampa, Fla. and Jean Eris Dall’au of Miami, Fla.; and friends/caregivers, Arlin and Bonnie Taylor of Hanceville.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today.

Margaret Anna Jewell

Funeral services for Margaret Anna Jewell, 88, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Fr. Kevin McGrath and Abbot Cletus Meagher officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jewell died Saturday, Jan. 18 at Woodland Medical Center. She was born Jan. 16, 1915 to John and Elizabeth Young Graveman. She was a homemaker, a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and was a lifelong resident of Cullman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Earl Jewell; a son, John George Jewell; her parents; two sisters, Marie Graveman and Clara Bavar; and two brothers, John E. Graveman and Joseph Graveman.

Survivors include a son, Edward J. Jewell of Cullman; and a daughter, Elizabeth L. (Jerry L.) Campbell of Vinemont.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

Visitation was Monday.

Steven Michael Wolfe

Funeral services for Steven Michael Wolfe, 31, of Birmingham will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Mac Buttram officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wolfe died Saturday, Jan. 18 at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was born March 5, 1971. He was a photojournalist for Channel 42 WIAT in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Helms Wolfe of Birmingham; a son, Evan Robert Wolfe of Birmingham; his mother, Martha Wolfe of Ft. Payne; his mother-in-law, Sharon Lott; his father-in-law, Mike Lott, both of Cullman; and grandparents, Beatrice Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., Jimmie C. Lott and Jimmie V. Lott, both of Cullman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society Head and Neck Division.

Visitation was Monday.

Louise Vawter Smelser

Funeral services for Louise Vawter Smelser, 80, of Falkville will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, the Revs. Steve Rogers and Walter Blackmon officiating, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smelser died Sunday, Jan. 19 at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born June 30, 1922 to John Spurgeon and Emma Banks Vawter. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton James Smelser Sr.; her parents; and two sisters, Nell Kilpatrick and Margie Vawter.

Survivors include two sons, Milton J. Smelser Jr. of Hartselle and Timothy K. (Treasa) Smelser of Cullman; two brothers, Jake Vawter of Morris and Don Vawter of Cullman; and four grandchildren, Shawn Keith Smelser, Nicole Leight Smelser, Sonie Wilson, and Kimberly Poole.

Visitation was Monday.

Badie Zell Pritchett

Graveside services for Badie Zell Pritchett, 60, of Arab were Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Cemetery, Lavern Crawford officiating.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pritchett died Friday, Jan. 17 at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1942 in Coffeeville to Thomas and Essie Quimby Pritchett. He was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William Pritchett; and his sister, Frances Pritchett.

Survivors include a son, Tony Lynn (Mary Westbrooks) Pritchett of Arab; two brothers, Dennis Pritchett of Alabama and Frank Pritchett of Montgomery; four sisters, Jackie Parr, Linda Smith, Ruby Pritchett, and Dot Ruyan; and two grandchildren, Desiree Paxton and Shamber Paxton.
