Sister Dorothy died Friday, Jan. 11 at Sacred Heart Monastery infirmary. She was born Amaretta (Ann Margaret) Flynn in Pratt City on July 19, 1901, one of eight children of Michael Joseph and Johanna Sullivan Flynn. From her close-knit family came two Benedictines: Sister Dorothy and her baby brother, Dennis, who became Father Eugene Flynn of St. Bernard Abbey.
Sister Dorothy’s life spanned almost the whole history of Benedictine Sisters of Cullman, who will celebrate their centenary this year. She was born nine months before the official founding of the Community on April 20, 1902, she entered during the tenure of the founding prioress Mother Ottilia Haas; made her perpetual vows early in the ministry of the second prioress, Mother Annunciate Janeway; and died in the term of the eighth prioress, Sister Veronica Ryan. Throughout the 86 years of her religious life, Sister Dorothy was a faithful Community member, a daily presence at prayers, Mass and recreation.
She was baptized at St. Catherine Church in Pratt City. After graduating from St. Catherine’s Elementary School, Amaretta attended Sacred Heart Academy in Cullman, where she resolved to enter the convent at 13-years-old. She taught at elementary schools in Elberta, Brookside, Cullman and Birmingham. From 1933 to 1972, she taught history, home economics and math, first at St. Paul High and after 1947, at John Carroll High.
Along with her major responsibilities in the classroom, she found time to coach John Carroll’s Radio Team in current events competition; to chair a number of the Benedictine Festivals organized to raise money for Sister-education; and to produce all kind of needlework crafts.
After her retirement in 1972, she embarked on a new career as a nutritional counselor for Weight Watcher International, directing two classes through Cullman College. She helped coordinate the Community’s 75th anniversary celebration in 1977.
Sister Dorothy was the premier historian at Sacred Heart Monastery, not simply because she had lived through most of the Community’s life, but because she was an enthusiastic history teacher who kept abreast of national and world events until shortly before her death. She wrote a history of the Community in the 60s and was a source for the complete history published in 1993.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Michael Flynn, John Flynn and Father Eugene Flynn O.S.B.; and four sisters, Mary Josephine Flynn, Helen Greer, Rose Flynn and Mildred McGlaun.
The Benedictine Community will pray Vespers at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, and the chapel will be open for visitation until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Benedictine Sisters of Cullman County Hospice.
