Francis Inez Harbin

Services for Francis Inez Harbin, 87, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Center Point Baptist Church, the Revs. Albert Dean Estes, Dewey Briscoe and Ricky Smith officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harbin died Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 7, 1914 in Cullman County to Edward and Carrie Nuss Basenburg. She was a homemaker and a member of Center Point Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence A. Harbin; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include four sons, Willard (Betty) Harbin of Bay Minette, Wayne (Linda) Harbin, Dale (Norma) Harbin and Wendell (Betty) Harbin, all of Cullman; a daughter, Gay Dean (Johnny) Harris of Cullman; a brother-in-law, Ray Drummond of Adamsville; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Wednesday.

Ivalee M. Self

Services for Ivalee M. Self, 75, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Valley Springs Baptist Church, Dillon Calvert and Terry Knight officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Self died Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born in Copper Hill, Tenn. on Oct. 2, 1926 to John Wesley and Dulcie Day McMurray. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernice E. Self; and a son, J.W. Self.

Survivors include two daughters, Melba (Harold) Bright and Margaret (Pete) Hancock, both of Valley Grove; three sisters, Alene Strickland of Robinwood, Faye Eason of Bethel and Margaret Murray of Springville; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Wednesday.

Donald Wayne Ray

Services for Donald Wayne Ray, 60, of Garden City were Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Vernon Alvis officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ray died Sunday, Jan. 13 at his residence. He was born in Cullman County on March 27, 1941. He was a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Ray.

Survivors include his wife, Vonda Ray of Garden City; a daughter, Shelley Kemper of Lakeland, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Pennington of Garden City; a stepson, Joey Twilley of Cleveland; a brother, Roger (Kathy) Ray of Eva; three sisters, Linda Roy, Judy Sanders and Becky Wright; and two grandchildren, Clay Kemper and Stephany Kemper.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Beulah Fincher

Services for Beulah Fincher, 87, of Birmingham, formerly of Arley, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at Meek Baptist Church, Steve Thomas officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fincher died Monday, Jan. 14 at Shelby Ridge Health Care.

Survivors include three daughters, Rose Waid and Joan Persons, both of Birmingham, and Patricia Wilkinson of Texas; a son, Steve Fincher of Arley; three sisters, Evelyn Wilkerson of Florida, Inez Gilliland and Hazel Walker, both of Arley; two brothers, Wallace Cook of Arley and Bennie Cook of Jasper; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Nellie Estes Lambert
Services for Nellie Estes Lambert, 95, of Baileyton will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at Holly Pond Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Ronald Earwood officiating, with burial in Baileyton Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lambert died Wednesday, Jan. 16 at her residence. She was born in Cullman County on June 29, 1906 to Homer David and Lillar Burks Estes. She was a homemaker and a member of Grandi Flora Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Vester John Lambert.

Survivors include two sons, Clinton (Mattie) Lambert, Donald D. (Nadine) Lambert both of Arab; two daughters, Vonda (Charles) Bates of Baileyton, Carolyn May of Holly Pond; two sisters, Eula Elrod of Baileyton, Alene Wright of Birmingham; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Donald Wayne Ray

Services for Donald Wayne Ray, 60, of Garden City were Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Vernon Alvis officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Mr. Ray died Sunday, Jan. 13 at his residence. He was born in Cullman County on March 27, 1941 to Leland and Hester Brown Ray. He was a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Vonda Ray of Garden City; a daughter, Shelley Camper of Lakeland, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Pennington of Garden City; a stepson, Joey Twilley of Cleveland; a brother, Roger (Kathy) Ray of Eva; three sisters, Linda Roy, Judy Sanders and Becky Wright; and two grandchildren, Clay Camper and Stephany Wiscuitt.

Visitation was Tuesday.

James Nolan Nesmith

Services for James Nolan Nesmith, 75, of Cullman will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Moss Service Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Keith Cook officiating, with burial in the city cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nesmith died Monday, Jan. 14 in Atlanta. He formerly lived in Dayton, Ohio, and Cullman.

He was the son of former mayor William Nesmith and Lila Nesmith. He graduated from Cullman High School in 1944 and enrolled at Birmingham-Southern. He left college to serve as a corporal in the Air Force during the U.S. occupation of Europe after World War II.

He then returned to Birmingham-Southern, earning his B.A. in 1947. He later received an M.A. from Vanderbilt University in sociology, a master’s of divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School, a master’s of sacred theology from Yale Divinity School and a Ph.D. in education from Ohio State University.

He served as a teacher and administrator at Vanderbilt and as dean of students at American University of Cairo. He subsequently worked in academic administration at Stephen’s College in Columbia, Mo.; University of Dayton (Ohio); and Sinclair College in Dayton.

His specialty was innovative programming in higher education, and he was instrumental in designing and implementing new programs in African-American studies and distance learning. While working for the Ohio Board of Regents, he designed and ran the Leadership Dayton program which served as a model for similar programs in other cities. He was also an accomplished pianist and gardener.

He died of Lewy Body disease, a form of Alzheimer’s.

Survivors include his wife, Edythe Engel Nesmith; two daughters, Mary Faith Nesmith and Edythe Elizabeth Nesmith; and two granddaughters, Molly and Lucy Prothero.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Prothero, Ray Buchmann, Bill Nesmith, Bill Lueck, John Newman and Liles Burke.

Visitation was Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to The College Scholarship Fund at Cullman High School c/o Sandra Watts.

Patsy Ruth Goodwin

Services for Patsy Ruth Goodwin, 72, of Deatsville will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. David McDonald officiating, with burial in Valley Springs Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Goodwin died Wednesday, Jan. 16 at her residence. She was born in Alabama on Jan. 29, 1929, the daughter of the late William D. and Vollie Iteria Knight Cofer. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory Goodwin and Marty Goodwin; two daughters, Patricia (J.C.) Cook and Sue (Charles) Guthery; three brothers, Jackie Cofer, Byron Cofer and Ronald Cofer; two sisters, Joyce Williams and Lois Cotton; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.

Rose Consilee Cook

Services for Rose Consilee Cook, 71, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Moss Service Funeral Home Chapel, Kathy Hogan officiating, with burial in Duck River Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cook died Wednesday, Jan. 16 at her residence. She was born Jan. 21, 1930 to Huel G. and Bell Farley. She was a housewife.

Survivors include her husband, James Cook; sister, Mary Black; two brothers, Charles Edward Farley, Arnold Sidney Farley; and four children, Joseph Farley, Kathy Hogan, Roger Farley and Rose Peoples.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Fannie Marie Clay

Services for Fannie Marie Clay, 83, of Cullman will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, Terry Michael and Dewey Sims officiating, with burial in Jones Chapel Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clay died Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Woodland Medical Center. She was born May 18, 1918 to W.E. and Fannie Martin Wallace. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J.D. Clay; sons, Robert Leroy Clay, Homer Lavon Clay, Olen Leon Clay; grandchildren, Melissa C. Bearden, Jayson Clay; brothers, Joseph Wallace, Amos Wallace; and sisters, Vera Holmes, Naomie Calhoun.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Fuston, Sheila Bohannon Daniel, Tina Echols; daughter-in-law, June Clay; three brothers, Kelly Wallace, Paul Wallace, J.C. Wallace; two sisters, Ellen McCormick, Mary Joy Tucker; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.

Willie May Knight

Services for Willie May Knight, 92, of Bessemer will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, the Rev. Jack Sandlin officiating, with burial in Valley Springs Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Knight died Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Beverly Health Care East. She was born in Cullman County on May 20, 1909 to John Henry and Lula Dover Davenport. She was a food canner at King Farr Industry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her daughter, Althalea Allred.

Survivors include three sons, Roger Knight of Bessemer, Henry (Mary Ruth) Knight of Birmingham, Johnny (Marlyn) Knight of Ragland; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
