Vern Calvert

Services for Vern Calvert, 71, of Haleyville were Monday, March 4, 2002 at Randy Lawrence Memorial Chapel, Owen J. Calvert officiating, with burial in Concord Cemetery in Winston County.

Lawrence Funeral Home of Winfield was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Calvert died Saturday, March 2 at Carraway Burdick West Medical Center in Haleyville. He was born in Cullman County on Oct. 18, 1930 to Lincoln Houston and Vera Stricklin Calvert.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Calvert of Haleyville; a son Kenneth Wayne Calvert of California; two stepsons, O. Kenneth Dodd and Don J. Dodd, both of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Sara Ann Barnett of Beaumont, Texas and Debra Calvert of Guin; three brothers, Owen J. Calvert, of Crossville, Hearl Doe Calvert of Temple Terrace, Fla. and Jerry D. Calvert of Livonia, Mich.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Gray Mixon Duncan

Services for Dorothy Gray Mixon Duncan, 72, of Prattville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Otts Funeral Home Chapel, Danny Stanford and Charles Ballew officiating, with burial in Webb Cemetery.

Otts Funeral Home of Sulligent is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Duncan died Friday, March 1 at her residence. She was born in Lamar County on June 15, 1929 to Dewey Washington Mixon Sr. and Addie E. Morrow Mixon. She attended Sulligent High School, was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Adamsville and a member of the Easter Star in Prattville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include two sons, Ronie (Eloise) Duncan of Hueytown, Davy (Serena) Duncan of Cullman; brother, Dewey W. (Betty) Mixon Jr. of Prattville; twin sister, Georgia Faye Duncan of Winfield; and three grandchildren, Stephen Duncan, Robbie Duncan, Aaron Duncan.

Pallbearers will be Darwin Mixon, Daniel Mixon, Robbie Mixon, Stephen Duncan, Gerald Busha, Basil Mixon. Honorary pallbearer will be Aaron Duncan.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Harry Oliver Largent

Services for Harry Oliver Largent, 82, of Bethany, Okla. will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, the Rev. Marvin Baker officiating, with burial in Anderson Memorial Park.

Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home of Anderson, Ind. is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Largent died Friday, March 1 at Bon Secours Venice Hospital of Venice, Fla. He was born Jan. 7, 1920 in Cadillac,.Mich. He retired from Nicholson File in 1986 after 48 years where he was a process engineer. In Cullman he was a member of the American Legion, the Elk’s Lodge, the Moose Lodge and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hubertina M. Largent; and a son, Gerard H.J. Largent.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Mitchell Largent of Bethany, Okla.; two sons, Dennis (Brenda) Largent of Mukwonago, Wis. and Duane (Shelia) Largent of Blountsville; a stepdaughter, Carol L. Morris of Mustang, Okla.; a stepson, Curtis N. Hiatt of Oklahoma City, Okla.; five grandchildren, Dennis Largent and Tina Largent of Mukwonago, Wis., Jeff Grace of Arab, Brandy Dempsey and Wendy Light, both of Blountsville; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family requests that donations be made to a favorite charity.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Fanny Joyce ‘Jo’ Burrow
Services for Fanny Joyce “Jo” Burrow, 58, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Duck River Baptist Church, the Revs. Sherman Bailey and Steven Thomas officiating, with burial in Duck River Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burrow died Monday, March 4 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born June 17, 1943 to Leonard and Era Mae Whaley Barnett. She was a machine operator at Americold.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bennie Ray Burrow; and her sister, Brenda Burns.

Survivors include three brothers, Gerald (Maxine) Barnett, Derrell “BoBo” Barnett, Sherrell “Moochie” Barnett, all of Hanceville; three sisters, Myra (Gene) Carroll, Rita (Gene) Mayfield both of Cullman, Carol (Barry) Patton of Birmingham; special friend, Bobby Watson; four “adopted sisters” Bobbie Bradford, Mary Helen Dickinson, Betty Bolden and Dean Metzger.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Barnett, Todd Barnett, Brent Barnett, Sohn Barnett, Jonathan Mayfield, Jarod Mayfield, Shane Burns and Josh Albritton.

Honorary pallbearers are Mickey Yancy and Roger Duke.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Betty Ann Taylor

Services for Betty Ann Taylor, 50, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, the Rev. Lamar Cox officiating, with burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, March 5 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born in Cullman on May 3, 1951 to Carvin and Dorothy Mae Freeman Taylor. She was an auto detailer for Billy Taylor Auto Sales.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Survivors include her father; one daughter, Teresa (Jeff) Paden of Crane HIll; seven brothers, James Taylor, Jimmy Taylor, Billy Taylor, Bobby Taylor, Cecil Taylor, Paul Taylor and Randy Taylor all of Cullman; two sisters, Linda Campbell of New Market, Brenda Gilbreath of Cullman; and one grandchild, Kassady Paden of Crane Hill.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Ray Youngblood

Memorial services for Ray Youngblood, 61, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002 at God’s House of Prayer at Dodge City.

Williams-McCracken Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Youngblood died Sunday, March 3 at his residence. He was born Aug. 23, 1940 in Warner Robbins, Ga. to O.P. and Helen Ard Youngblood. He was a crane operator for McKinney Drilling Co.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include special friend, Joyce Wilson of Cullman; a daughter, Kristi Rae Youngblood Rodgers of Warner Robbins, Ga.; a sister, Ann Walton of Warner Robbins, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Taylor Rodgers and Lakelin Rodgers.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Cullman.

Memorial services will also be held at 7 p.m. today in Centerville, Ga. at the Open Door Church.

Sammie Inez Rawls

Services for Sammie Inez Rawls, 91, of Cullman, formerly of Pinson, were Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Pinson Methodist Church, the Revs. Dallas Culver and Russ Fox officiating, with burial in Marvin’s Chapel Cemetery.

Ridout’s Trussville Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rawls died Saturday, March 2. She was a lifelong member of Pinson Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Chatham.

Survivors include a son, Charles M. (Juanita) Chatham; a daughter, Betty (Dedrick) Bentley; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a hospice organization.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Betty Lou McMinn

Services for Betty Lou McMinn, 94, of Altus Okla., formerly of Cullman, were Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Lowell-Tims Chapel, Sonny Tims officiating, with burial in Restlawn Cemetery.

Lowell-Tims Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McMinn died Saturday, March 2 at the Plantation Village in Oklahoma. She was born Jan. 30, 1908 in Eastland, Texas to W.R. and Lousina Hammer Long. She moved to Eldorado, Okla. with her family at age three in a covered wagon. She was a long-time resident of Mangum, Okla., a member of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church, both in Oklahoma, and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.H. McMinn Sr.; and a grandson, Danny McMinn.

Survivors include a son, Junior (Bobbie) McMinn of Altus, Okla.; two grandchildren, Robbie McMinn (Richard) Riley of Altus, Okla. and Roy D. (Mary) McMinn of Warrior; and five great-grandchildren, Courtney, Katie and Cody Riley, all of Altus, Beau McMinn of Mt. Home, Idaho and Kellie and Brett McMinn, both of Warrior.

Visitation was Monday.

Dicie Odelle Latta Buffington
Services for Dicie Odelle Latta Buffington, 84, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, Elder Guy Hunt officiating, with burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Buffington died Tuesday, March 5 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born June 30, 1917 in Blountsville to Moses A. and Estella Price Latta. She lived there, Birmingham and most recently in Hanceville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, W.E. Buffington.

Survivors include three brothers, William H. (Violet) Latta of Mount Olive, James B. (Christine) Latta of Fultondale and Ray A. (Evelyn) Latta of White City; a sister, Gail Latta Key of Cullman; and a brother-in-law, Calvin Key of Cullman.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today.

Myrl Stewart

Graveside services for Myrl Stewart, 80, of Blountsville will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Hopewell Cemetery, the Rev. Larry Nails officiating.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died Wednesday, March 6 at her residence. She was born March 16, 1921 in Cullman to James and Ellen Moore. She was a production worker for King Pharr.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a nephew, Jerry (Nelda) Moore of Blountsville; a great-nephew, Jerry Moore of Blountsville; and two great-nieces, Gwen Evans of Florida and Barbara Green of Blountsville.
