Amuil Booth Briscoe

Graveside services for Amuil Booth Briscoe, 79, of Price ville were Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Roselawn Cemetery, the Rev. W.K. Stephenson officiating.

Roselawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Briscoe died Tuesday, April 30 at his residence. He was born June 30, 1922 in Morgan County to James H. and Ara Belle Ryan Briscoe. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in New Guinea, the Southern Philippines and Luzon. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a retired supervisor for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Madge Johnson, Verdie Maxwell and Claudia Crawford; and four brothers, James Briscoe Jr., Sherman Briscoe, Howard Briscoe and Floyd Briscoe.

Survivors include his wife, Alene Speegle Briscoe; a son, Michael S. Briscoe of Decatur; and two grandchildren.

Nephews were pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Arvella ‘Tootsie’ Bates
Services for Arvella “Tootsie” Bates, 80, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Phil Young officiating, with burial in Simcoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bates died Friday, May 3 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born March 1, 1922 to Patrick Henry and Addie Johnson Ford. A retired school teacher, Mrs. Bates earned a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Alabama. She taught at West and East Elementary Schools in Cullman for 25 years. She was an active member of Retired Teachers Association, Alabama Education Association and Alph Delta Kappa International Honorary Society for Women Educators. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church for 60 years and a member of the choir for 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Charles Bates; son Kenneth W. Bates; three brothers, Willard, Virgil and Guy Ford; and three sisters, Wanda Ford, Zula Easterwood, Burma Grubbs.

Survivors include her daughter, Martha (Sam) Mazzara of Cullman; brother, Henry (Ruby) Ford of Albertville; grandson, John (Cheryl) Bates of Batesburg, S.C.; two granddaughters, Sharon Bates of Duluth, Ga., Bethany Mazzara (Kevin) Tomlin of Alexandria; great-grandson, John Galt Bates of Batesburg, S.C.; eight nephews; and three nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Cullman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Emily Lynne Anderson

Graveside services for infant Emily Lynne Anderson of Vinemont will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2002 at Mt. Zion Cemetery, the Rev. Jim Abbott officiating.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born and died Thursday, May 2 at Woodland Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, John Johnson; and great-grandfather, William Anderson.

Survivors include her parents, Spc. John and Mandy Anderson; sister, Caleigh Anderson; grandparents, Rebecca Maldonado, Johnny Anderson, Patricia Johnson; great-grandparents, Dorothy Anderson, Ezell Twilley, J.J. Twilley; and step-grandfather, Nelson Maldonado.

No visitation is planned.

Buford P. Sims

Services for Buford P. Sims, 79, of Arab will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2002 at Corinth Baptist Church in Joppa, Bud Wilkinson and Martin Merriman officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery. The body will lie in state an hour prior to the service.

Arab Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sims died Saturday, May 4 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Florida on July 23, 1922 to William M. and Mattie Lee Mears Sims. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Audie Sims of Arab; daughter, Phyllis Jean Thiot of Vinemont; son David W. Sims of Cullman; four step-children, Romaine Mann, Sandy Camron both of Arab, Annette Enomoto of Hawaii, Buddy D. Mize of Gurley; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Andrew Harley Gilliland
Services for Andrew Harley Gilliland, 79, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, Dudley Brock and Steve Rodgers officiating, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gilliland died Sunday, May 5 at Woodland Medical Center. He was born in Alabama on July 7, 1922 to Chester and Mary Annie Miller Gilliland. He was a farmer and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Ima Inez Spradlin Gilliland; three daughters, Martha Sue (Charles) Gilliland Brown, Brenda Fay Gilliland Moore and Barbara Jean (Wayne) Gilliland Armstrong; two sons, Kenneth Wade (Gail) Gilliland and Jerry Wayne (Tammy) Gilliland; a sister, Billie Jean Gilliland Perrian; two brothers, J.C. and Eugene Gilliland; an uncle, Verbon Miller; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Marsha Kay White Harbison

Services for Marsha Kay White Harbison, 45, of Logan will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Logan Baptist Church, Scott Patillo, Larry Brown and Stan Graves officiating, with burial in Logan Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harbison died Saturday, May 4 at UAB Hospital. She was born June 27, 1956 in Cullman to Clyde and Ival McClendon White. She was a school teacher for Cullman County.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include her mother, Ival White; a daughter, Heather (Jammie) Lynn of Logan; three sisters, Regina White, Lynne White and Sonya White, all of Logan; and a grandchild, Lydia Lynn of Logan.

Visitation was Monday.

Charles Alton Richardson

Services for Charles Alton Richardson, 68, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Glendal Bridgmon officiating, with burial in Sardis Cemetery in Trimble.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Richardson died Saturday, May 4 at Baptist Medical Center in Princeton. He was born Nov. 26, 1933 in Cullman County to Raymond Kelly and Bessie Morris Richardson. He was a diesel mechanic and a member of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jerry Ray Richardson.

Survivors include his wife, Elouise Powell Richardson of Cullman; two sons, Tracy (Janice) Richardson of Hanceville and Roger Richardson of Cullman; a stepson, Ricky Kelley of Huntsville; two stepdaughters, Patty (Wayne) Wray of Arab and Michelle (Billy) Willard of Texas; two brothers, Bruce (Joanie) Richardson of Logan and Dennis Richardson of Cullman; three sisters, Barbara (Ezra) Hayes of Oneonta, Linda Ward of Gulf Shores and Charolette Davis of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren, Michael Wray, Austin Wray, Jessy Kelley, Monica Willard and Michael Ryan Willard.

Visitation was Monday.

Aileen Syble Smith

Services for Aileen Syble Smith, 81, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Hugh Thomas and Gary Waddell officiating, with burial in Bethel Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith died Sunday, May 5 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 27, 1920 in Morgan County to James and Martha Shaddix Graham. She was lunchroom cook for Vinemont School.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman Smith; and her daughter, Norma Lee Smith.

Survivors include three sons, Harold (Barbara) Smith, Robert Darrell Smith both of Cullman and Gerald Smith; two daughters, Hilda Smith Vance and Sherald (Jeff) Thomas both of Cullman; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Monday.

Howard Kelley

Services for Howard Kelley, 79, of Cleveland will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Blount County Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel, Mike Young and Neil Whited officiating, with burial in Green ’s Chapel Cemetery.

Blount County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kelley died Sunday, May 5 at Health South. He was born in Blount County to Doug and Larrie Brown Kelley. He was a retired carpenter, a member of Carpenter’s Union Local 103 and a member of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by parents; and one brother, Clyde Kelley.

Survivors include his wife, Luevell Fowler Kelley of Cleveland; a son, Jerry Kelley of Cleveland; a daughter, Glenda Owens of Cleveland; a brother, Giles Kelley of Attalla; three sisters, Jewel Williams Gladys Taylor of both Gadsden and Gailia Daily of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Diane Calvert, Anita Pass, Wayne Owens, Donna Sherrer, Keith Kelley and Lynne Smith; and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Ledbetter, Gene Tidwell, David Gallimore, Bruce Turner, Tommy Roberts and Billy Daily.

Raymond McAndrew ‘Mac’ Sims

Services for Raymond Andrew “Mac” Sims, 65, of Hartselle will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Hartselle First United Methodist Church, the Revs. W.G. Henry and Harold Thompson officiating, with burial in Hartselle City Cemetery. The body will lie in state an hour prior to the service.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Sims died Sunday, May 5 at his residence. He was born in Moundville on April 12, 1937 to Raymond and Mabelle McAndrew Sims. He was a graduate of Auburn University and member and officer of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He graduated with honors from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham. He served as a member of the United States Army Dental Corps, completing his service in 1966 in Germany with the rank of captain. He was a member of the Hartselle Kiwanis Club, served on the board of directors of the Hartselle Chamber of Commerce, was a founding member and director of Community Bank and Trust Company (now Colonial Bank) and served on the board of directors of Colonial Bank. As a member of Hartselle First United Methodist Church, he served on the administrative board. He was a licensed pilot and an Eagle Scout.

Dr. Sims practiced dentistry in Hartselle for 35 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He was a member of the Academy of General Dentistry. He was currently serving as vice president of the Alabama Dental Association, had served on its executive committee for the last 12 years; was a member of its board of trustees and completed 11 years as chairman of its political action committee. He previously served as president of the 8th District Dental Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Blizzard Sims of Hartselle; son, Mark Lee Sims of Decatur; sister, Elizabeth Sims Cheshire of Montgomery; and two nephews, Raymond Todd (Kim) Cheshire of Montgomery, Randall McAndrew (Michelle) Cheshire of Tuscaloosa.

Pallbearers will be James Taylor, Dr. Bob Sittason, Stephen Berardi, Allen Stoner, Charles Reid, Dr. Mike McCutcheon, Dr. David Sittason. Honorary pallbearers will be officers of the executive committee of the Alabama Dental Association and members of the Hartselle Dental Study Club.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 216 Johnston Street, Decatur, Ala. 35601 or Hartselle First United Methodist Church, 210 East Hickory, Hartselle, Ala. 35640.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
