Alvin Rufus Twilley

Services for Alvin Rufus Twilley, 76, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Mt. Grove Baptist Church, the Rev. Jimmy Scott officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Twilley died Wednesday, Nov. 28 at his residence. He was born July 28, 1925 in Cullman to Marvin and Callie Twilley. He was a truck driver and a veteran of the armed forces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Ozell Twilley, Homer Twilley, George Twilley, Melvin Twilley, Buster Twilley, Marcell Twilley and Lacy Twilley; and a sister, Gerthie Twilley.

Survivors include his wife, Merdie Twilley of Hanceville; a daughter, Shelia (Jared) Grisom of Cullman; two sons, Bruce (Kay) Twilley and Gary (Marie) Twilley, both of Hanceville; a stepsister, Martha Jane Abbott; a sister, Nancy Barrett; two brothers, Jimmy Twilley and Tom Twilley; and a grandchild, Jason (April) Twilley.

Visitation was Thursday.

Thomas J. Newman

Services for Thomas J. Newman, 72, of Birmingham will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, with burial in Southern Heritage Cemetery.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Newman died Wednesday, Nov. 28. He was born Jan. 5, 1929 in Cullman to William W. and Ossie Daniel Newman. He lived in Birmingham since 1955. He graduated from Auburn University in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in forestry. At Auburn he interned for the U.S. Forest Service’s Western Region Fire Control. After graduation he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War in North Africa.

In 1955 he joined Resource Management Services, a Birmingham-based forestry consulting firm, and was one of the three primary principals of the firm until his retirement in 1990. He served as vice-president and executive president of the firm and was manager of the Forest Management Division. He was active in the Association of Consulting Foresters, and served as president of the Alabama Chapter. He also was active in the Society of American Foresters and served as chairman of the Alabama Division. He was also a member and deacon of Shades Mountain Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ada W. Newman; his parents; two brothers, William W. Newman Jr. and James Dudley Newman; and his sister, Mariglen Prickett.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendoline S. Newman; two sons, Thomas Daniel Newman of Charlotte, N.C. and Philip Cade Newman of New York City; a grandson, Andrew Thomas Newman; two stepsons, Erwin Spivey of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Darrell Spivey of Birmingham; and a stepdaughter, Jackie Johnson of Birmingham.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to the Missions Ministry of Shades Mountain Baptist Church or The American Heart Association.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

John L. Holmes
Services for John L. Holmes, 88, of Vinemont will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001 at Moss Service Chapel, with burial in Union Hill Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Holmes died Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Cullman Health Care Center. He was born Aug. 29, 1913 to John Robert and Ida Robertson Holmes. He was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Ivelene Lina Reeves Holmes; three sons, Hershel Holmes, Hollis Holmes and Don Holmes; three daughters, Linda Copeland, Melba Christian and Nancy Moore; a sister, Elvie Brown; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Friday.

Al Varnes

Graveside services for Al Varnes, 71, of Madison will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at Cullman City Cemetery, Allen Weatherly officiating.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Varnes died Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Sept. 16, 1930 in Florida to Isaac A. Sr. and Bessie Varnes. He was a retired sergeant major in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include five daughters, Connie Whatley of Hanceville, Grace Schrimsher, Norma Hope and Gail Cooper, all of Madison, and Kam Law of Sedona, Ariz.; two sons-in-law, Tommy Schrimsher and Richard Cooper; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday.

Eleanor Frances Schaefers
Services for Eleanor Frances Schaefers, 86, of Hanceville were Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father John O’Donnell officiating, with burial in the Catholic cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schaefers died Sunday, Nov. 18 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born July 31, 1915 in Cullman to John and Regina Veigl Donauer. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy S. Cofer of Helena; a son, Mike (Linda) Schaefers of Cullman; four grandchildren, Cindi Burns, Deborah Cofer, William Blair Cofer and Chris Schaefers; and one great-grandchild, Kie Burns.

Justin James Lemus

Graveside services for Justin James Lemus, 4 days, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at Christ the King Abbey Cemetery, the Rev. Steve Rodgers officiating.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He died Monday, Nov. 19 at Baptist Medical Center in Montclair. He was born Nov. 16, 2001 in Cullman to Sergio and Jamie McCune Lemus of Cullman.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jeronimo Lemus and Teodora Torres.

Survivors include his parents; his grandparents, James and Carolyn McCune of Southaven, Miss.; and a sister, Juliana Joy Lemus of Cullman.

Vernon H. McAfee

Services for Vernon H. McAfee, 74, of Birmingham, formerly of Cullman, were Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 at Parkway Christian Fellowship, the Rev. Randy Williams and Mark Correll officiating, with burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.

Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home of Trussville was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McAfee died Sunday, Nov. 18. He was a member of Parkway Christian Fellowship and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda June McAfee of Birmingham; two sons, Harry (Amy) McAfee of Birmingham and David (Janet) McAfee of Slidell, La.; his mother, Willie Belle McAfee of Crane Hill; a sister, Mary Ellen Jones of Crane Hill; and two grandchildren, Kate and Erin McAfee.

Visitation was Monday.

John Marvin Barronton
Services for John Marvin Barronton, 91, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at Etha Baptist Church, the Rev. Clyde Ledlow officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barronton died Saturday, Nov. 10 at his residence. He was born July 5, 1910. He was a member and deacon of Etha Baptist Church and was a member of the Simcoe Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Mae Drake Barronton; two daughters, Sylvia (J.D.) Burns, Betty (Dalton) Thompson; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation is at 5:30 p.m. today.

Hermine ‘Mickey’ Bergner

A memorial service for Hermine “Mickey” Bergner, 72, of Cullman will be at 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at Moss Service Funeral Home Chapel.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bergner died Saturday, Nov. 10 at Woodland Medical Center. She was born April 8, 1929 to Joseph and Kathrina Markel Butscher. A native of Germany, she lived in Cullman for 25 years and worked at Nicholson File for 15 years. She was a member of the Cullman Germany Club.

Survivors include her husband, Herman Bergner; son, Richard Butscher; daughter-in-law, Betty Butscher; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation.
