Alabama, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1805-1967 - 1814-1935

Mr. Lex O. Byrd, 65 of the Hamilton's Crossroads Community of Pike County, died Saturday November 22, 2003 in Baptist Medical Center East in Montgomery following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday November 25, 2003, from Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Reverend Joe Underwood and the Reverend Harold Peters officiating. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery with full Masonic Rites at graveside, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at Holman Funeral Home in Ozark from 5:00 P M. until 7 p.m. Monday November 24, 2003. The body will be placed in the Church one hour prior to service time on Tuesday.
Mr. Byrd was a native of the Longstreet Community of Dale County where he was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was a retired aircraft mechanic having worked at Fort Rucker, and at Dannely Field in Montgomery. He was a member of the Brundidge Masonic Lodge #184 and the Alcazar Shrine Temple. He raised cattle, farmed, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working in his yard.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Carroll and Lucy Ezell Byrd, a brother Maxwell Armour Byrd, and his first wife, Wanda Dykes Byrd.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Rhodes Byrd, Brundidge, one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Byrd Corbin and her husband, Joe, Brundidge, one step-daughter, Kassey Rhodes, Brundidge, two sons, Neal Byrd, Prattville, AL, and Tony Byrd, Ozark, one step-son, Klint Rhodes, Brundidge; step-mother, Mrs. Lillie Mae Sullivan, Ozark, three sisters and one brother-in-law, Wanda McKnight, Newton, Alma Jean Jackson, Ariton, and Catherene Wise and her Husband, Fonteil, Montgomery; one brother and sister-in-law Ted Carroll Byrd and his wife, Jeanette, Southport, FL, two grandsons, Scott and Max Corbin, Brundidge.

Mrs. Louise Sanders, 81, of Ozark, died Saturday morning, November 22, 2003, in Dale Medical Center following a long illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark. Interment will follow in Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Sanders was a native and life-long resident of Dale County where she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Sanders.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Ricky Smith, Ewell, Estelle and Roy Langford, Ewell, and Dorothy and Harold Williams, Ozark; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Obie and Virginia Sanders. Ozark. and O'Neal Sanders, Ewell; one sister, Leoma Sanders, Panama City, Florida; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Miss Addie Pauline Thomas, 90 of Ozark, died Saturday morning, November 22, 2003, in Dale Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark. Interment will follow in Skipperville Cemetery Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Miss Thomas was a native of Dale County and a member of Union Presbyterian Church in the Arguta Community. She worked as a cashier for eleven years with the A&P Tea Company in Ozark and in Enterprise. She managed the Judy Bond Store in Ozark, served as sales clerk for Kirkland's Drug Store, Dowling's Department Store, The Beverly Shop, and Tarter's Drug Store before her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Walker Thomas and Janie Dykes Thomas; two sisters, Foy Mae Thomas and Mary Kate Thomas Adkins; one brother-in-law, Willie W. Adkins, and one nephew, Billy Adkins.
Survivors include a niece, Janice Adkins Lewis, Skipperville; four great nephews, Rex Lewis and his wife, Tina, Skipperville, Tommy Lewis, Skipperville, Terry L. Adkins and his wife, Vickie, Daleville, and William Michael Adkins and his wife, Laila Griffin, Georgia; three great nieces, Mona Lewis Hughes and her husband, Larry, Edenton, North Carolina, Sheila Adkins Smith, Chandler, Arizona, and Sherri Adkins Woodham and her husband, Kent, Auburn; ten great-great-nephews and seven great-great-nieces also survive.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 800 Jeffery Lane, Birmingham, Alabama 35235.

Lena Trammell Walker, 81 and a resident of Ozark Health & Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Midland City, died late Thursday afternoon, Nov. 20, 2003, at Dale Medical Center in Ozark.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday Nov. 23, at Sanctuary of Praise (formerly First Assembly of God of Midland City) with the Rev. Ricky Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Midland City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary in Headland. At other times, the family will be at the home of her daughter Brenda Proctor 795 Private Drive, Midland City.
Mrs. Walker was born and reared in Dale County daughter of the late Tillman Oliver Trammell and Calcy Camilla Mixon Trammell. She formerly lived in Headland several years but was a resident of the Midland City area most of her adult lifetime.
Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband., George Lloyd Walker; a daughter, Helen Walker; and a son, Irvin. Walker.
Surviving relatives include her daughter Brenda Proctor and her husband, Larry Proctor, Midland City; a sister, Annie Jowers, Dothan; five grandchildren, Don. Proctor arid his wife, Stephanie Proctor, Lisa Hitchcock and her husband, Jason Hitchcock, Wayne Walker and his wife, Cindy Walker Kim Campbell, Keith Walker and his wife, Janice Walker; four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Frances Kimbrough Borland passed from this life into Heaven Friday Nov. 14, 2003, at Extendicare Hospice Facility.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday Nov. 17, at Pinckard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Deb Freeman and the Rev. Don Davitz officiating. Burial will follow at Pinckard Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at Ward-Wilson Memory Hill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frances K. Borland Memorial Fund, c/o Pinckard United Methodist Church, PO. Box 439, Pinckard, Ala. 36371.
Frances, affectionately called "Mama Frances" by the grandchildren, was born to Guy Eoleus Kimbrough and Annie Mae Clements Kimbrough on Nov. 8, 1917, at Mark Hall, her grandfather's plantation in Harris County, Ga. She grew, up in Montgomery, graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and Huntington College. After graduating from Huntington, she taught school in Newton, where she met and married her late husband, Morris McLane Borland (Mac). During the 60s and 70s she taught science at Dale County High School. She loved teaching and she loved her students. She was always glad to see former students and hear of their accomplishments.
She was very active in her beloved church, Pinckard United Methodist, for many years. Serving on many committees, she was a member of UMW Dale County Retired Teachers Association, The Pinckard Study Club, The Dale County Library Board and Needlepoint Guild. She will always be fondly remembered by family and friends for the beautiful needlework she created.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; twin infant brother, Guy Kimbrough; brother; and sister, Bess Connell.
She adored her children, Ann and Richard Ramsey, Sue and Bubba Sellers all of Dothan, Linda and Thom Lott, Fairhope, Mac and Delane Borland, Pinckard; grandchildren, Glynn Kennedy and Kim Kennedy, Dothan, Suzanne and Allen Worthy, Selma, Ashley Griffin, Panama City, Fla. Tara Griffin, Florida, Scarlett Harper, Suwannee, Tenn., and McDaniel and McLane Borland, Pinckard, and Lane Sellers; seven great-grandchildren; special nephews, Tom and Emma Borland and their son, Merlyn and Jennifer Borland, Pinckard; special sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Bert Hollingsworth; several nieces and nephews; a host of friends.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Wiregrass Hospice and nurses and aides of Extendicare, fourth hall, and Extendicare Hospice Care Facility.

Robert W. Godwin, 91 of Bartlett, Ill., formerly of Ozark, died Nov. 10, 2003.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark. Burial will be in Claybank Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at Holman Funeral Home in Ozark from 1 p.m. until service time Friday.
Mr. Godwin was a native of Ozark and worked as an Alabama State Trooper from 1936 until his retirement as a captain in 1971.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Godwin.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. John Godwin and his wife, Cathy Kefer Godwin, and James Godwin; three grandchildren, Adam, Anna, Tara and her husband, Robert; one great-grandchild, Krina; one sister, Bess Mizelle; and one brother, William Godwin.

Florence Carroll Matthews of Squirrel Drive, Ozark, died at her home Thursday Nov. 13, 2003, surrounded by family and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday Nov 15, 2003, at Ozark First United Methodist Church on Broad Street. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. An organ concert of Mrs. Matthews favorite hymns will begin one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vivian B. Adams School or Flowers Center for the Performing Arts.
Mrs. Matthews was born Jan. 21, 1931, on Broad Street in Ozark to Maurine Peacock Carroll and Sam Jones Carroll Sr. Her maternal ancestors were early settlers of Coffee County and her paternal ancestors came to Dale County from the Carolinas in the 1830s. She graduated from high school at Washington Seminary (now Westminster) a school for girls in Atlanta, Ga. She attended Huntingdon College and the University of Alabama and received a degree in education from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). While at the University of Alabama, she was initiated into the Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta and later affiliated with the Sigma Lambda Chapter at A.P.I.
A steadfast member of the First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Matthews served as organist and pianist there for more than 50 years. Serving as a member of the music committee, she helped to plan the installation of the church's treasured Wicks pipe organ. From the age of 15, she used her talents to play at weddings and funerals for hundreds of local families.
She was a loyal supporter of Vivian B. Adams School, a school in Ozark for mentally handicapped persons, where she served on the board of directors for many years. Mrs. Matthews was an excellent cook, famous for her innovative and delicious recipes. Her chocolate layer cakes which were raffled off at annual Rotary auctions, raised thousands of dollars to support Vivian B. Adams School and numerous other charities. Countless friends enjoyed her gifts of baked goods for birthdays or to raise spirits in times of sadness.
Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Ozark Literary Club, a Rotary Club International Paul Harris Fellow and a founder on the board of directors of Flowers Center for the Performing Arts. She was an avid reader and a duplicate bridge enthusiast. She loved to spend time at the family's cottage at Sunnyside Beach.
Mrs. Matthews, a devoted wife and mother, was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Judge William B. Matthews Sr.
Survivors include two sons, and daughters-in-law William B. Matthews Jr. and Starla, Warren C. Matthews and Elizabeth; and one daughter and son-in-law Maurine M. Johnston and David; two brothers, Kells C. Carroll, Sam J. Carroll Jr.; sister-in-law Sara N. Carroll; 10 grandchildren, Julianne C. Johnston, Fumie Wesley Johnston, William B. Matthews III, Thecla W. Matthews, David W Matthews, Sara Elizabeth Matthews, Wesley Moss, Hayden Moss, Anne S. Matthews and Warren C. Matthews Jr.; a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be William B. Matthews III, Fumie Wesley Johnston, David W Matthews, Frank N. Carroll, Franklin Carroll Jr., Sam J. Carroll III, Woodrow Hilboldt, Trotman Carroll, Stuart Skinner and Dr. Bill McLaughlin.

Miss Lasunder Green wood, 30 of Ozark, died Sunday Nov. 9, 2003 at Dale Medical Center in Ozark.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday Nov. 15, at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Skipperville with pastor, the Rev. Perkins, and the Rev. W.C. Burks officiating. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery in Skipperville.
Trawick Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Marion James Wallace, 64 of Ozark, died Saturday Nov. 8, 2003, in Flowers Hospital, Dothan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Ridgecrest Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Hill and Ed Peters officiating. Burial will be in Post Oak Baptist Church Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. His body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. Visitation hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday from the funeral home. Family will receive friends during these hours. Family asks that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church building fund, 1971 Deese Rd., Ozark, Ala., 36360 or to Post Oak Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 4108 North Union Ave., Ozark, Ala., 36360.
Mr. Wallace was born July 15, 1939, in Ozark, the son of the late Marion A. (Bud) Wallace and Mildred Peters Wallace. He was a member of ·Ridgecrest Baptist Church, native and lifelong resident of Dale County Ala. He was a carpenter by trade.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mrs. Betty Smith Wallace of Ozark; one daughter, Jennifer Wallace of Ozark; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert James Wallace and Jennifer of Ozark; mother, Mildred Peters Wallace of Ozark; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Dean Scott of Ozark; one grandson, Phillip James Wallace of Ozark; and many other relatives also survive.
Pallbearers will be Lee Scott, Andy Smith, Lonnie Tucker, Tom Clements, Kandy Martin, Nigel Hartzog and Bill George. Honorary pallbearers will be the men's Sunday school class of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

Mrs. Alice Harris Riley, 97 of Ozark, died Saturday Nov. 8, 2003, in a Huntsville nursing home after a long illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at Holman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Hix officiating. Interment will be at Westview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends after services Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Riley was a native of Dale County where she was a member of the Ozark Baptist Church, the Ladies Sunday School Class, and the Women's Missionary Society She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Ozark.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hurley T. Riley Sr.; one daughter, Dean Riley Covington; one son, Hurley T. Riley Jr.; two sisters, Bessie Glover and Thyra Weaver; and one brother PC. Harris.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law Hazel and Milton Brietzke, Huntsville; one sister Salome Power Jackson; and one brother Roy Harris, Ozark; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Eva Lou Snellgrove, 90 of Ozark, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, in a Pensacola, Florida hospital following a long illness.
Funeral services will be graveside at 2 p.m. Monday Nov. 10, 2003, in Woodlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Snellgrove lived most of her adult life in Ozark, Ala. and was a member of The Ozark Baptist church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William J. Snellgrove.
She is survived by two daughters, Monette Kelly of Pensacola and Susan Paramore and her husband Ben of Pensacola; two grandchildren, Shannon Sierra of Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Chris Kelly of Pensacola, Fla.; four great-grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Mary LaHoma Craddock, 81 of Apopka, Fla., formerly of Ozark, died Friday Nov. 7, 2003.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 11, 2003, at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with the Rev. John D. Reese III officiating Interment will follow with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Craddock was born Feb. 12, 1922, in. Frederick, Okla. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Chureh, a bookkeeper, and a fan of Auburn football.
Survivors include four sons, Rick Craddock, Oklahoma City Okla., Mike Craddock and his wife, Tracy, Birmingham, Mark Craddock and his wife, Kim, Warner Robbins, Ga., and Jeff Craddock, Apopka, Fla.; two daughters, Pam Warren, Sanford, Fla., and Candy Jones and her husband, Tim, Orlando, Fla., seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1400 South Orange Avenue, Orlando, Fla., 32806 or Vitas of Central Florida, 5151 Adanson St., Suite 200, Orlando, Fla., 32804.
