Funeral services will be be Thursday, July 26, 2001 at 2pm CDT
at the Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin
McCreless and Rev. Jimmy Griffin officiating.
Burial will follow in the Wesley's Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Robert Thomas age 79 of Fyffe, AL passed away Wednesday,
July 25, 2001 at Dekalb BMC Hospital

Funeral services will be Friday, July 17, 2001 at 2pm CDT at the
Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lee Earl Thompson,
Rev. Ray Lanning, and Rev. Dan Kirkpatrick officiating.
Burial will follow in the Beulah Cemetery.

Mr. Hoyt Crawford age 91 of Powell, AL passed away Friday,
July 27, 2001 at Crowne Health Care in Fort Payne, AL

Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alan Crawford and Rev.
David Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in the

Miss Clussie Thomas age 94 of Powell, AL passed away Thursday, July 4, 2001
She aw preceded in death by her Sister; Flossie Owens and Pluma Deerman
and Brothers; Blanie Thomas, Glen Thomas, and Eldridge Thomas.

from the Sand Mountain Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.
Melvin W. Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain
View Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Viola Bell Crane Shirey age 87 of Fort Payne, AL passed away
Saturday, June 30, 2001 at BMC Dekalb Hospital. Mrs. Shirey was born
December 8, 1921 in Dekalb County, AL., daughter of the late Jack and
Lucy Evans Crane. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in
Fort Payne, AL Her Sons; Gary Don Shirey and Tim Shirey peoceded her
in death..

Funeral services will be 11am Monday, July 2, 2001 at the Wilson Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Doyle Shirey officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 1, 2001 at the funeral home.

MR. JOHN W. BAXTER, JR.

Mr. John W. Baxter, Jr., age 54 of Fort Payne, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002 at his residence.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, July 1, 2002 from the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Mt. Herman Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday 4-8 PM.

Survivors include: daughter, Wendy Baxter; mother, Mrs. Audrey Baxter, both of Fort Payne; sister, Joan Wisner of Rainsville; grandchildren, Summer, Chelsey, and Jennifer Wynn.

Mr. Baxter was a native of Fort Payne, the son of J.W. and Audrey Thompson Baxter, an employee of the Fort Payne Improvement Authority, and a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church in Fort Payne, AL.

MRS. FLORENE PULLEN KIRBY

Mrs. Florene Pullen Kirby, age 82 of Mentone, AL, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Shephard Hills Nursing Home in GA.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the Mentone Community Church with Rev. Randy Addison officiating. Burial will follow in the Little River Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends Monday 5-8 PM at the funeral home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mentone Community Church or Alzheimer's Research.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by: daughters, Fay Grady Webster, Florida, Joyce Brown, Summerville, GA, and Kathy McMunn, Mentone, AL; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a native of DeKalb County, AL, the daughter of Robert and Daisy Kerr Pullen. She was a member of the Mentone Wesleyan Church.

MR. GEORGE LEE WESTMORELAND

Mr. George Lee Westmoreland, age 92 of Fort Payne, passed away Monday, July 1, 2002 at BMC DeKalb Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 3, 2002 from the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Fred Higgins and Rev. Lee Earl Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View Memory Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Survivors include: daughter, Philba W. Higgins of Fort Payne; sons, Ed Westmoreland of Fort Payne, Rex Westmoreland of Fort Payne, and Ned Westmoreland of Fort Payne; sister, Eva Bouldin of Crossville; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Mr. Westmoreland was a native of DeKalb County, born March 2, 1910, the son of the late Henry and Sarah Bobo Westmoreland. He was a Deacon for more than 50 years at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He received his 50 year pin from the Fyffe Masonic Lodge # 697 F & AM. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rowena Westmoreland in 1998.

MRS. JEWELL PARKER GARRETT

Mrs. Jewell Parker Garrett, age 84 of St. Augustine, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2002 in St. Augustine, FL. Before moving to Florida in 1992, Mrs. Garrett was a longtime resident of Fort Payne. For many years, she worked as a knitter at Cobble Hosiery Mills and was of Baptist faith.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, July 5, 2002 from the New Home Cemetery in Henagar. Flowers are gratefully declined and those wishing to make a contribution in her memory to Bayview--Samantha Wilson Care Center, 161 Marine St., St. Augustine, FL 32084, or a favorite charity.

She is survived by her daughter, Rose Larsen of St. Augustine, FL; sisters, Ruby Leath of Fort Payne and Mabel Skaggs of Rainsville; two grandchildren; one great grandchild.

MRS. IRENE WHITLEY DAVIS

Mrs. Irene Whitley Davis, age 90 of Fort Payne passed away Friday, July 5, 2002 in BMC-DeKalb.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Sunday, July 7, 2002 from the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Willmon and Bro. Billy Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Wilson Funeral Home.

Survivors include: daughters, Edna (Bob) Inman of Rome, GA, Wanda (Edsel) Reece of Fort Payne, Annette (Gary) Kennedy of Fort Payne, and Jo Hammon of Scottsboro; sons, Leslie (Fay) Davis of Guntersville, Edward (Clara) Davis of Fort Payne, and Jay Clyde Davis of Fort Payne; sister, Ollie Mae White of Rainsville; brother, Robert Whitley of Fort Payne; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Davis was a native of DeKalb County, AL, born September 21, 1911, daughter of the late William and Janie Walker Whitley. She was of the Holiness faith and retired from Prewett Mills, Inc. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Davis.

REV. MIKE BURT

Rev. Mike Burt, Pastor of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, Fort Payne, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002 following a sudden illness.

Funeral service was Sunday, July 7, 2002 from the Liberty Hill Baptist Church at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Kenneth Moses and Rev. James Ledwell officiating. Burial followed in the Black Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kevin Cobble, Bruce Twilley, Jerald Baker, Jerry Baker, Ken Lawrence, James Brannon, Eddie Everett and Bruce Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church and employees of DMB Hosiery Mill.

Survivors include: wife, Lynn Green Burt; daughter, Rebekah Burt; son, Shane Burt; mother, Charlotte Burt; brothers, Larry and Ted Burt, all of Fort Payne.

Rev. Burt was a native of DeKalb County, born Jan 25, 1955, son of the late G.H. Burt. He had pastored the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Unity Baptist Church and Delmar Baptist Church. He also owned and operated DMB Hosiery Mill in Fort Payne.

MR. CHARLES M. MCGRIFF, JR.

Mr. Charles M. McGriff, Jr. age 61 of Fort Payne, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2002 at a Birmingham Hospital. Mr. McGriff was born February 1, 1941 in Jacksonville, FL, son of Louise Watkins McGriff and the late Charles M. McGriff, Sr. He was the owner of Cecil Durham Insurance Agency for many years and a member of First Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at 3:00 PM from Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Pat McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Monday, July 15, 2002 at the funeral home.

Survivors include: wife, Janice Durham McGriff, sons and daughter-in-law, Brad and Candace McGriff of Fort Payne, Travis McGriff of Birmingham; daughter, Charlotte McGriff of Fort Payne; mother, Louise Watkins McGriff of Elmore; brothers, Mike McGriff of Millbrook, Walter McGriff of Montgomery; grandsons, Jacob and Dylan.

MR. PERCY SHERMAN DAVIS

Mr. Percy Sherman Davis, age 86 of California, formerly of Fort Payne, passed away July 15, 2002 in California.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 21, 2002 at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Ronnie Gregory officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Saturday, July 20, 2002 at the funeral home.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kim Davis of Benicia, CA; grandchildren, Dale Davis, Dean Davis, Scott Davis, and Bonnie Davis. Mr. Davis was born January 18, 1916. He was the son of the late William Walter and Euna McCaleb Davis. He was retired from Hughes Aircraft and a member of Fort Payne Church of Christ.

MR. L.D. BAUGH

Mr. L.D. Baugh, age 73 of Fort Payne, passed away Friday, July 19, 2002 at BMC-DeKalb. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, July 22, 2002 at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Donnie Hilyer officiating. Burial will follow in Stuart Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM-8:00 PM Sunday, July 21, 2002 at the funeral home.

Mr. Baugh is survived by his wife, Doris Baugh of Fort Payne. He was born January 31, 1929 in Georgia the son of the late Hampton and Daisy Craig Baugh. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Baugh. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills in Summerville, GA.
