E.M. Barnes Jr.
HARTSELLE - The Rev. E.M. Barnes Jr., 83, of 803 Barkley St. died Wednesday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hartselle with the Rev. W.G. Henry, the Rev. W.L. Cole, the Rev. Bert Goodwin and the Rev. Harold Thompson officiating.
Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home in charge.
The Rev. Mr. Barnes was pastor emeritus of the church and active in the Hartselle Ministerial Association. He retired in 1980.
Survivors include his wife, Aline Barnes of Hartselle; one son, Dr. Ernest Mobley Barnes III of Huntsville; two daughters, Judith Berry of Hartselle and Dr. Susan B. Lamb of Savannah, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Violet Buford
Violet Buford, 89, of Huntsville died Wednesday at a local hospital. The graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Huntsville Memory Gardens with Dr. Bill Cockrell officiating.
Laughlin Service Funeral Home is in charge of burial.
Mrs. Buford worked at Dunnavants department store for nine years.
Survivors include two daughters, Lillian Beatrice Keefe of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Carol B. Miller of Huntsville; one sister, Armenta Spurlock of Huntsville; and seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Gracie M. Cain
TONEY - Gracie Mae Cain, 81, of Old Railroad Bed Road died Tuesday at her home. The funeral was to be today at 3 p.m. at Gallant Funeral Home chapel in Hazel Green with the Rev. Sonny Kirk officiating.
Burial will be in New Sharon Cemetery.
Mrs. Cain was a housewife.
Survivors include her husband, James H. Cain of Toney; one daughter, Vicki Marlene Perry of Madison; five sons, Billy Wayne Cain, Ricky Dale Cain and Bobby Eugene Cain, all of Toney, James Charles Cain of Hazel Green and Tommy Ray Cain of Huntsville; and 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Edwin H. Chewning
SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. - Edwin Hasting Chewning, 75, died Tuesday at a Fredericksburg, Va., hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Locust Grove, Va., with the Rev. Rick Richie officiating.
Burial will be in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Spotsylvania.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Sullivan Chewning of Spotsylvania; two sons, Edwin Michael Chewning of Huntsville and Jeffrey Lynn Chewning of Fredericksburg; and three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 444, Fredericksburg, 22404.
Visitation will be today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

James A. Clouse
COVINGTON, La. - James Aubrey Clouse, 48, died Tuesday at his home. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Decatur City Cemetery with the Rev. W.K. Stephenson officiating.
Shelton Funeral Home of Decatur is in charge of burial.
Mr. Clouse was a native of Graysville.
Survivors include his wife, Dodie C. Clouse of Covington; one stepson, Calder Lynch of Covington; his mother, Sharlene Clouse of Huntsville; one brother, Robert Clouse of Benbia, Calif.; and two sisters, Janice Clouse and Robin Clouse, both of Huntsville.

Margaret Collier
Margaret Collier, 82, of Huntsville died Saturday at her home. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Seaside Funeral Home chapel in Corpus Christi, Texas, with Fred Culbertson officiating. A memorial service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Huntsville.
Burial will be in Seaside Memorial Park with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Collier was formerly of Corpus Christi, Texas, and was a founding partner of Collier, Johnson and Woods Certified Public Accountants in Corpus Christi. She was a 50-year American Red Cross volunteer and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Collier.
Survivors include one son, Larry Collier of Lexington, Ky.; and two granddaughters, Cheryl Painter of Huntsville and Michelle Collier of Lexington.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross or the Russell Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M University.

Jerry R. Collins
BOAZ - Jerry Robert Collins, 52, of 119 New Clear Creek Road died Tuesday at his home. The funeral was to be today at 2 p.m. at Mount Hebron Baptist Church.
Burial was to be in the adjoining cemetery with Albertville Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Collins; two sons, Robert Collins and Ricky Collins, both of Boaz; three sisters, Rosa Amos of Saris and Nancy Morgan and Anita Elton, both of Boaz; and four brothers, Donald Collins, Roy Collins and Travis Collins, all of Boaz, and Jackie Collins of Martling.

John C. Derrington
John C. Derrington, 52, of Huntsville died Monday at his home. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Edward C. Gartrell and the Rev. Charles Godwin officiating.
Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Derrington taught at Alabama A&M for 4 years. He also created a college preparatory initiative in forestry for the Scheck Job Corp. Center in North Carolinas Pisgah Forest. He also counseled and mentored at-risk youths. He was preceded in death by one son, John C. Derrington III.
Survivors include one daughter, Heather Derrington of Raleigh, N.C.; and his mother, Georgia Derrington of Huntsville.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Earle D. Kitchen
HARTSELLE - Earle Dewey Kitchen, 80, died Tuesday at his home. Peck Funeral Home will announce funeral arrangements.
Mr. Kitchen was a native of Georgia, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, a member of the Rotary Club and a volunteer for Meals of Wheels.
Survivors include four sons, David Kitchen of Pembrooke Pines, Fla., Al Kitchen of Atlanta, Ford Gates of Hartselle and Lee Kitchen of Montgomery; one daughter, Alice Kay Kitchen of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; two brothers, Al Kitchen of Augusta, Ga., and Harry Kitchen of Dayton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Charlotte Bryngelson and Katherine Foran, both of Augusta; and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

James T. Lusk
ATHENS - James T. "Jimmy" Lusk, 53, died Tuesday in Limestone County. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery.
Limestone Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of burial.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Lusk of Athens; one sister, Virginia Pack of Hawkins, Texas; and one niece, Jenny Dunn of Hawkins.
Memorial donations may be made to Pathfinder Inc., 3104 Ivy Ave. S.W., Huntsville, 35805.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eddie M. Madewell
OCOEE, Fla. - Eddie Mae Madewell, 78, died Tuesday. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Holiness Church.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with Spry Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Madewell was a native of Morgan County.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Anderson of Laceys Spring and Cynthia Jean Henderson of Plymouth, Fla.; one son, James Leonard Madewell of Laceys Spring; two brothers, Connie E. Youngblood of Groveland, Fla., and Melvin Youngblood of Laceys Spring; and nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Robert L. McCaulley
Robert Lee McCaulley, 76, of Huntsville died Sunday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Madkins Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Endia Scruggs officiating.
Burial will be in Meadowlawn Garden of Peace with Nelms Memorial Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah McCaulley of Huntsville; three daughters, Mary E. Thompson, Clara M. Franklin and Ollie M. McCaulley, all of Huntsville; two sons, Robert L. McCaulley and Willie L. McCaulley, both of Huntsville; two sisters, Jessie M. Buford and Mary Francis Eason, both of Huntsville; and two brothers, Ollie McCaulley of Huntsville and Charlie McCaulley of Columbus, Ga.

Winifred A. McVeigh
GUNTERSVILLE - Winifred A. McVeigh, 93, of Guntersville died Wednesday at a local nursing home. The funeral was to be today at 4 p.m. at Gober Funeral Home in Arab.
Burial was to be in Gilliam Springs Cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Eileen Demarco of Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Falls of Arab; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Louise Meeks
TAFT, Tenn. - Louise Meeks, 81, of Ukon Road died Wednesday at a Fayetteville, Tenn., hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Gallant Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
Burial will be in Barnes Cemetery.
Mrs. Meeks was a native of Lincoln County, Tenn., and a member of Molino Baptist Church. She was also a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Meeks.
Survivors include two daughters, Faye Swinford of Taft and Rose Mole of Fayetteville; two sons, Ray Meeks of Taft and Bobby Meeks of Fayetteville; one sister, Vera Jackson of Winchester; and 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lila S. Moore
Lila S. Moore, 76, of Huntsville died Wednesday at his home. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Mathews and Billy Harbin officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Moore was a native of Madison County and a member of Meridianville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine C. Moore of Huntsville; two sons, George A. Moore and Michael S. Moore, both of Huntsville; two brothers, Murray L. Moore of Scottsboro and Calvin C. Moore of Huntsville; two sisters, Mary Moore Kovalcheck and Betty Jean Moore Boyanton, both of Huntsville; and four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Celina Morales
DECATUR - Celina Morales, 100, died Monday at a local nursing home. The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Anns Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Culotta officiating.
Shelton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Morales was a native of Nicaragua.
Survivors include two daughters, Amanda "Mamacita" McClellan of Decatur and Thelma Lash of San Pedro, Calif.; one son, Oscar Morales of Nicaragua; and seven grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mamie L. Nabors
GUNTERSVILLE - Mamie Leila Nabors, 93, of 2177 Union Grove Road died Tuesday at a local hospital. The funeral was to be today at 2 p.m. at Gober Funeral Home in Arab.
Burial was to be in Sweet Home Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Dodd of Union Grove, Ann Watson of Guntersville and Gaynell Waldrep of Boaz; four sons, Ronald Nabors of Arab, Donald Nabors of California and Max Nabors and Frank Nabors, both of Union Grove; one brother, Levhon Graves of Union Grove; and 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Clifton R. Satterfield
Clifton R. Satterfield, 79, of Huntsville died Wednesday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles McCay and the Rev. Ryan Rosser officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill with Spry Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Satterfield was a native of Madison County, a member of the church and a Navy World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Satterfield of Huntsville; two daughters, Nancy Morris and Mary Beth Cook, both of Huntsville; three sisters, Bertie Manley, Pauline Throneberry and Lucille Satterfield, both of Huntsville; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Janice Turner
Janice Denise Rich Turner, 39, of Huntsville died Tuesday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Syler Tabernacle with the Rev. Endia Scruggs officiating.
Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens with Nelms Memorial Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd E. Turner of Huntsville; two daughters, Laskisha Rich and Nina Rich, both of Huntsville; seven brothers, Frank Rich, John Rich, L.C. Houston, James Earl Rich, Ezell Rich and Robert Earl Rich, all of Huntsville, and David Rich of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three sisters, Mary Booker, Willie E. Burruss and Estella Byrd, all of Huntsville; and five grandchildren.
Her body will be at the church one hour before the funeral. Other Deaths

J. Franklin Hyde
CORNING, N.Y. - J. Franklin Hyde, an organic chemist whose glassmaking method made the fiber-optics revolution possible, died Monday. He was 96.
Hydes pioneering work with ultra-pure glass at Corning Glass Works in 1934 was used in radar during World War II. It didnt gain wide use until the 1960s when it led to durable spaceship windows, galaxy-gazing telescopes, precision lenses to build computer chips and signal-carrying optical fibers.

David A. Huffman
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - David A. Huffman, who turned his college term paper into a computer coding procedure still in use four decades later, died of cancer Thursday. He was 74.
Huffman developed the Huffman Coding Procedure, a mathematical technique still vital to data storage and transmission. The procedure assigns strings of 0s and 1s to each character in a file.
The codes are used to manage files in large computer systems; compress text, image and audio files; and compress data for transmission by fax machines, modems and high-definition television broadcast. Huffman created the system while a graduate student in the 50s at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
