William Milton NeSmith
73, retired Lawrence County employee

MOULTON -- Funeral for William Milton NeSmith, 73, of Town Creek will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Houston and the Rev. Jerry Strickland officiating.

Burial will be in Fergerson Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. NeSmith died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. He was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Lawrence County to William and Earlene Hollimon NeSmith. He was a member of Cave Springs Freewill Baptist Church and was retired from the Lawrence County Road Department as an equipment operator.

He is survived by his wife, Syble Fretwell NeSmith; his daughter, Joyce NeSmith Ennis of Town Creek; two sisters, Lois Canup of Town Creek and his twin, Mildred Bradford of Town Creek.

Pallbearers will be Bob Morris, Tony Burks, Carl Terry, Andy Bradford, Eugene Fretwell, Harold Fretwell, John Terry and Bill Agee.

David Uriah Patton
88, retired attorney

ATHENS -- Funeral for David Uriah Patton, 88, of Athens will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jerrilee Lewallen officiating.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery with Limestone Chapel Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church's parish hall.

Mr. Patton died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 22, 1911, in Livingston to Roy Bolton Patton and Irene Foscue Patton. He moved to Athens when he was 5 years old. He received a bachelor's degree from Athens State College and a juris doctor degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He practiced law in Athens from 1940 until he retired in 1989. He was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was a partner in the law firm, Patton, Latham, Legge and Cole. He was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and served on its vestry. He represented Limestone and Lauderdale counties as a senator in the Alabama Legislature from 1948 to 1952. In the early 1950s, he was the state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Progress Club and a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Athens. He was the brother of the late Roy Bolton Patton Jr. and Irene Patton Parker. He was the widower of Elizabeth Riddle Patton.

He is survived by his wife, Paralee Chennault Patton; one daughter, Elizabeth Bolton Patton; two stepdaughters, Mary Virginia Dilworth of Birmingham and Faye Littrell of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Cruse Patton Clark of Huntsville and Alice Patton Nolen of Florence; and seven step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Roy Bolton Patton III, Richard Harris Parker Jr., David Patton Parker, Robert Brown Nolen Jr., James Pollard Clark Jr., Winston Vaughan Legge Jr., Byron Judson Colley III and Michael Thomas Dilworth.

Members of the Limestone County Bar Association will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church or Hospice of Limestone County.

Edna Merle Vinson
80, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Edna Merle Vinson, 80, of Athens was to be today at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Farris and the Rev. James P. Adams officiating.

Burial was to be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mrs. Vinson died Sunday, March 5, 2000, in Athens. She was born July 21, 1919, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem Springs Baptist Church. She was the sister of the late Prentis Adams.

She is survived by one son, James Leon Adams Sr. of Laurel, Miss.; one brother, Preston K. Adams of Indianapolis; three sisters, Willodean Tucker, Cannie Swanner and Ella Hill, all of Athens; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Adams, Danny Adams, Edwin Tucker, Howard Swanner, Larry Swanner and Gus Hargrove.

Madge Woods Berry
74, former Decatur resident

HOOVER -- Funeral for Madge Woods Berry, 74, of Hoover, formerly of Decatur, was to be today at 3 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Cohen officiating.

Burial was to be in Southern Heritage Cemetery.

Mrs. Berry died Monday, March 6, 2000, at her home. She was born June 8, 1925, in Arkansas to Thelma and Roy Patton Woods. A graduate of Woodlawn High School, she was a former secretary at Continental Gin Co. She was a member of New Horizons and a founding member of Discovery United Methodist Church. She was the widow of John R. "Jack" Berry.

She is survived by three daughters, Joyce B. Terry of Decatur, Susan B. Fuhr of Morristown, Tenn., and Jackie B. Gerding of Hoover; two brothers, Roy P. Woods of Birmingham and Robert L. Woods of Houston, Texas; one sister, Barbara W. Fritz of Birmingham; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Discovery United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 36506, Birmingham, AL 35236-0506, or Hospice of the Valley, 216 Johnston St. S.E., Decatur, AL 35601.

Frank Collier

Funeral arrangements for Frank Collier, 76, of Priceville, who died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home, will be announced by Shelton Funeral Home.

James Paul 'Shorty' Henderson

Funeral for James Paul "Shorty" Henderson, 55, of Decatur will be Saturday at noon at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Birdsong officiating.

Burial will be in Sterrs Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Henderson died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Dec. 6, 1944, in Morgan County to Steve and Ophelia Stegall Henderson. He worked 30 years at Busy Bee Market before working as a supervisor at the Corner Express convenience store. He was the widower of Mildred Biddle Henderson.

He is survived by four daughters, Tara Dixon of Fort Benning, Ga., Angela Biddle and Paula Bolden, both of Decatur, and Jacqueline Pendell of Huntsville; one brother, Jessie Henderson of Chattanooga; three sisters, Mollie Thomas of Decatur, Ernestine Walton of Los Angeles and May Francis Johnson of Chicago; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Leon Birdsong, Rufus Hampton, Wayne Henderson, Clarence Adkins, Charles Jackson and Willie James Birdsong.

Sam Benton Holt
81, retired salesman

ATHENS -- Funeral for Sam Benton Holt, 81, of Athens will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with O.D. Morrow, Carl Witty and Robert Fudge officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Holt died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Athens Convalescent Center. He was born Aug. 17, 1918, in Limestone County. He was a retired salesman from Tom's Foods and a member and elder at Ephesus Church of Christ. He was the widower of Pansy Holt and the brother of the late Gladys Holt and Will Ed Holt.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Holt; two sons, Wayne Holt of Athens and Tim Holt of Florence; two daughters, Sue Taylor and Nancy Bowers, both of Athens; four stepchildren; one sister, Florene Black of Athens; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Elders and deacons of Ephesus Church of Christ will be pallbearers.

Lillian Lucille Long
83, retired cook

ATHENS -- Funeral for Lillian Lucille Long, 83, of Lester was to be today at 2 p.m. at Salem Church of Christ with Joe Quellin officiating.

Burial was to be Hester's Chapel Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Long died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at her home. She was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Limestone County, where she was a lifelong resident. She was a retired cook and a member of Salem Church of Christ. She was the widow of Lotha Long and mother of the late Billy Doyle Long, Bonnie Parker and Sylvia Long.

She is survived by one son, Danny Ray Long of Lester; seven daughters, Betty Bullington of Lester, Elizabeth Phillips of Center Star, Amelia Johns, Barbara McGill and Regina Lovett, all of Pulaski, Tenn., Shelia Garlen of Athens and Donna Jackson of Madison; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dwayne McGill, Ricky Phillips, Toney Phillips, Roger Bullington, Michael Garlen and Keith Hargrove.

Florence Green Matlock
77, former Decatur resident

Graveside service for Florence Green Matlock, 77, of Chattanooga was to be today at 1:30 p.m. at Athens City Cemetery.

Mrs. Matlock died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at her home. She was born in Athens and was a longtime resident of Decatur.

She is survived by one son, Dan K. Green of Memphis; one daughter, Linda G. Hill of Ooltewah, Tenn.; one brother, Jack Moss of Mesa, Ariz.; four sisters, Lucille Pressnell of Athens, Edith Eddy of Maumee, Ohio, Jewel Pever of Mesa and Mamie Hicks of Florence, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga.

Teri Dawn Miner
39, bank official

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Teri Dawn Miner, 39, of Holly Pond was Wednesday at New Hope No. 2 Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Owens, the Rev. Gerald Hodges and the Rev. Ralph McGowan officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Williams-McCracken Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Miner died Monday, March 6, 2000, at home. She was born Aug. 2, 1960, in Athens to Bill and Shirley Brock Chambers. She was assistant vice president of Peoples Bank.

She is survived by her husband, Alan Miner; two sons, Jared Miner and Casey Miner, both of Holly Pond; her mother of Cullman; one brother, Barry Chambers of Cullman; and one sister, Tina Johnson of Garden City.

Memorials may be made to the Teri Miner Memorial Fund at Peoples Bank.

Charlie R. 'Red' Roberson
85, Decatur Utililities retiree

Funeral for Charlie R. "Red" Roberson, 85, of Decatur will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. W.K. Stephenson, the Rev. Kenneth Dunivant and the Rev. Buddy Champion officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Roberson died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home. He was born Feb. 12, 1915, in Lawrence County to Luther and Ava Wear Roberson. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and served many years as Sunday school president. He was retired from Decatur Utilities, where he worked in the electric department for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Roberson; one brother, Spurgeon Roberson of Decatur; and one sister, Mary Virginia Morgan of Jackson, Miss.

Pallbearers will be Richard King, Wilson Morgan, Gilbert Thrasher, John Butler, Jack Fite, Jim Lee, B.F. Wear and Ewell Russell.

Members of the Adult Six men's Sunday school class at First Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.

Robert Wayne Barrett
71, retired

MOULTON -- Funeral for Robert Wayne Barrett, 71, of Moulton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackie Shelton officiating.

Burial will be in Cheatham Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Barrett died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at his home. He was born July 21, 1928, in Lawrence County. He retired after working at General Motors for several years..

He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Levins and Peggy Miller, both of Cottondale; two brothers, James E. Barrett of Addison and Farrell Barrett of Moulton; two sisters, Marie Roberson and Judy Dutton, both of Moulton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
