FOREST PARK, Ga. -- Funeral for John Maurice Lowery, 73, of Forest Park, Ga., will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Parkway Garden Chapel with the Rev. Pete Mullins officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this afternoon from 2 to 4 and tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Lowery died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Portsbridge Hospice in Riverdale, Ga. He was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Lawrence County to James W. and Ora Ellen Ratliff Lowery. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a Marine veteran of World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann Duck of Fairburn, Ga., and Lisa Gaddis of Riverdale, Ga.; two sisters, Nell Harrison of Hartselle and Laura Jean Sterling of Danville; his father of Hartselle; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Avery Kirkland Powers
68, painter

Funeral for Avery Kirkland Powers, 68, of Priceville will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. James Barnett officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Powers died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Lakeland, Fla., Regional Hospital. He was born April 7, 1932, in Priceville, to Frank Powers and Barbara Ellen Duncan Powers. He was a painter.

He is survived by two sons, Bruce Powers of Somerville and Dwight Powers; two daughters, Arlene A. Powers of Russellville and Jan Powers of Pulaski, Va.; two sisters, Ruby Brenizer of Lakeland; and Lela Smith of Danville; and five grandchildren.

Tiara Nashae Shoulders

ATHENS -- Funeral for Tiara Nashae Shoulders, 20, of Athens will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at People's Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie Byrd officiating.

Burial will be in Houston Cemetery in Tanner.

Ms. Shoulders died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Aug. 25, 1979, in Morgan County. She was a graduate of Clements High School and a student at Calhoun Community College.

She is survived by her parents, Lonnie and Elizabeth Shoulders of Athens; two brothers, Carlando Devon Shoulders of Decatur and Shanta Shoulders of Athens; and three sisters, Latasha Michelle Shoulders, Tamala Maria Shoulders and Tamela Lynn Shoulders, all of Athens.

Mearl Wigginton

HARTSELLE -- Funeral arrangements for Mearl Wigginton, 83, of Somerville, who died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center, will be announced by Peck Funeral Home.

James Lee Woodward
69, retired newspaper editor and general manager

ATHENS -- Funeral for James Lee Woodward, 69, of Athens was to be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Bobby Graham, Steve Klein and Joe Olson officiating.

Burial was to be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mr. Woodward died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born March 23, 1931, in Arab. He was a member of Oakland Church of Christ. He retired as editor and general manager of the Huntsville News in April 1996. During his 42-year career, he was editor and business manager at the Athens News Courier and assistant sports editor at The Huntsville Times. He also worked for the Limestone Democrat Courier and The Gadsden Times. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member and past president of the Alabama Journalism Foundation Board. He was a former member of the Rotary Club in Huntsville.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Woodward; one son, Jimmy Woodward of Athens; one daughter, Phyllis Lomax of Athens; two brothers, Larry Woodward of Stephenville, Texas, and Douglas Woodward of Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Bette Cozart of Collierville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Robert Robison, Trey Woodward, Ernest Nave, Ronnie Brackeen, Dwan Gregg and Lynn Persell.

Memorials may be made to Athens Bible School or the Alabama Journalism Foundation Board.

Omie Vercie Buckelew
92, homemaker

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Omie Vercie Buckelew, 92, of Baileyton was to be today at 11:30 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vernon Willis officiating.

Burial was to be in Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery with Cullman Heritage Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Buckelew died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 22, 1907, in Morgan County to John and Victoria Smith Bryant. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of Elige Buckelew and the mother of the late Otis Buckelew.

She is survived by one son, Afton Buckelew of Tennessee; one daughter, Helen Holcomb of Baileyton; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jerry Walker Bynum Sr.
82, minister

TALLADEGA -- Funeral for the Rev. Jerry Walker Bynum Sr., 82, of Lincoln was to be today at 2 p.m. at Usrey Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. William Cassidy, the Rev. Larry Morris and the Rev. Dr. Luther Williams officiating.

Burial was to be in Midway Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bynum died Monday, April 10, 2000, at his home. He was born July 1, 1917, in Lawrence County. He was a Baptist minister for 64 years, serving churches in North Alabama. He was director of missions for Limestone, Tuskegee, Lee and Coosa River Baptist associations.

He is survived by his wife, Permellia Bynum; one son, Jerry Walker Bynum Jr. of Jackson Gap; two daughters, Judy Campbell of Huntsville and Jenny Bynum-Bryant of Auburn; one brother, Jimmie Bynum of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Trannie Tanner of Decatur; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Carl Crabtree, Orby T. Harris, Lefty Morris, Spurgeon Morris, Tom Collier, Thane Bryant and Max Campbell Jr.

Homer Campbell

MOULTON -- Funeral for Homer Campbell, 63, of Town Creek will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Fuller and the Rev. Mark Wakefield officiating.

Burial will be in Hardshell Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Campbell died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at National Health Care in Moulton. He was born Sept. 22, 1936, in Colbert County to John Red and Nellie Campbell. He was a retired brick mason.

He is survived by three sons, Ricky Campbell, Randy Campbell and Johnny Campbell, all of Moulton; four daughters, Cindy Little and Teresa Wilkins, both of Mount Hope, and Sharon Smith and Melissa Hammond, both of Moulton; two brothers, Willie Campbell and Earl Campbell, both of Tuscumbia; two sisters, Sarah Poole of Muscle Shoals and Elsie Dawson of Leighton; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Members of Alcoholics Anonymous will be honorary pallbearers.

Ruth Simpson Cofield

MOULTON -- Funeral for Ruth Simpson Cofield, 75, of Moulton will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Neal Carter officiating.

Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Russellville. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cofield died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at National Health Care in Moulton. She was born June 8, 1924, in Lawrence County to William Lawrence and Pamelia Jean Simpson. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was the widow of Ed Cofield.

She is survived by one brother, Bill Simpson of Danville.

Pallbearers will be Josh McGuire, Brett Black, Mark Hester, Gary Black, Louie Smith and Richard Smith.

Curtis Duane Fergus

ATHENS -- Memorial service for Curtis Duane Fergus, 45, of Athens will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Danny McMullins officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6 to 7 at the funeral home. Mr. Fergus died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born June 27, 1954, in Atlanta. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a production worker at Rapair Incorporated in Madison.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Fergus; his father, Charles E. Fergus of Elkmont; and one sister, Bonnie Brooks of Colorado.

The Rev. Hurley V. Grissom Sr.

Funeral for the Rev. Hurley V. Grissom Sr., 84, of Decatur will be Friday at noon at Garner Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with his son, the Rev. Hurley V. Grissom Jr., officiating.

Burial will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Grissom died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Selton, Ark., to I.Z. Grissom and Alice Richards Grissom Aldridge. He was a CME minister in Michigan for years and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his son of Decatur; one daughter, Gloria Crain of Southfield, Mich.; two brothers, Edward Aldridge and Ulas Aldridge, both of Forest City, Ark.; two sisters, Sadera Copage and Precious Pritchett, both of Forest City; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Harold Hailstock, George Willingham, Anthony Hanserd, David Young, Robin Long and Donald Jackson.

Elmore D. James

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Elmore D. James, 81, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Hartselle, will be Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Elmore died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Tandem Healthcare-Lake Parker in Lakeland. He was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Franklin County to William and Mary Wilson James. He was a member of Hartselle Church of Christ, a retired purchasing manager with Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Corp. and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a master sergeant for 20 years. He was the widower of Florence L. James.

He is survived by two sons, Larry S. James Sr. of Decatur and William R. James of Lakeland; one daughter, Linda S. James of Lakeland; and five sisters, Shelley Hester of Montgomery, Doris Murray and Ann Hood, both of Atlanta, and Mary Howard and Avalon "Boots" Casey, both of Decatur.

Jan Newman

HUNTSVILLE -- Funeral for Jan Newman, 69, of Madison will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Bateman officiating.

Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Newman died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in Huntsville. She was born Oct. 25, 1930, in Guntersville. She was past president of the Hospitality Club and a member of Friendship Club, Bridge Marathon, Whitesburg Boat and Yacht Club, Madison County Hotel-Motel Association, Alabama Tourism Association and First Bible Church in Decatur.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Newman; one son, Randy Hartley of Nashville; one daughter, Debbie Delmas of Huntsville; two stepsons, Scott Newman of Orlando, Fla., and Russell Newman of Birmingham; one stepdaughter, Lesley Long of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and one grandson.

Memorials may be made to Huntsville-Madison County Botanical Gardens.
