Charles Ray Watkins
67, retired security guard

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Charles Ray Watkins, 67, of Elkmont will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cylone Cemetery with James Turner officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends today after 3 p.m. at his home.

Mr. Watkins died Friday, April 14, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born April 15, 1932, in Limestone County. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and a retiree of Lynn Layton Chevrolet, where he was employed as a security guard. He was the father of the late James Watkins.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Pearl Watkins; four sons, John Watkins, Wayne Watkins, Jerry Lee Watkins and Michael Kevin Watkins, all of Elkmont; three daughters, Elizabeth Crow, Brenda Meredith and Susan Stubbs, all of Athens; one brother, Johnny Wales of Huntsville; one sister, Zona Anderson of Elkmont; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Major Ashford
85, retired mechanic

TUSCUMBIA -- Funeral for Major Ashford, 85, of North Courtland will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at North Courtland Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Shackleford officiating.

Burial will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery in Courtland with Thompson and Son Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Ashford died Friday, April 14, 2000, in Tennessee. He was born in Lawrence County. He was a retired mechanic and a member of Point Lodge 774 F&AM, Spring Creek, and North Courtland Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Joe Ashford; one son, Richard Ashford of Hillsboro; two brothers, Winston Ashford of Huntsville and Milton Ashford of New York; and one grandson.

Members of the Masonic Lodge will be pallbearers.

Mary Reece Gamble
80, retired director of nursing

Memorial service for Mary Reece Gamble, 80, of Decatur will be Monday at 5 p.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Randon Jackson officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Roselawn Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Gamble died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Moulton Health Care Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Carrolton, Miss., one of 12 children of Mosie and Sally Clark. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Presbyterian Women of the Church. She was a retired registered nurse and was director of nursing at Decatur General Hospital and Pineview Hospital in Hartselle. She was a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy during World War II. She was the widow of Jack Gurney Gamble.

She is survived by two daughters, Clareece McMahan of Decatur and Mary McGaha of Huntsville; two brothers, Joe Clark and Fred Clark, both of Green wood, Miss.; four sisters, Ada Duke of Pearl, Miss., Peggy Catledge of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Grace Touchstone and Gladys Puckett, both of Meridian, Miss.; and two grandchildren.

William E. Jones
70, retired machinist

ALBERTVILLE -- Graveside service for William Ernest "Bill" Jones, 70, of Boaz will be today at noon at Belchers Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. David Byrd officiating and Albertville Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Jones died Friday, April 14, 2000, at his home. He was born June 26, 1929, in Jasper. He was a retired machinist and an Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Mayes Jones; three sons, Steven Jones, Jimmy Jones and David Jones, all of Illinois; one daughter, Teresa Davis of Missouri; two stepsons, Bobby Dixon of Decatur and Johnny Dixon of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Juanita Brown of Missouri; his stepmother, Delores Jones of Illinois; one stepsister, Connie Guetersloh of Illinois; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Dora Etta Smith
92, retired schoolteacher

MOULTON -- Funeral for Dora Etta Smith, 92, of Moulton will be today at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with the Rev. Dillon Calvert and the Rev. Thomas Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Smith died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born April 5, 1908, in Lawrence County. She was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College, a retired schoolteacher and a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. She was the widow of the Rev. Lewis E. Smith.

She is survived by two stepsons, Reuben Smith and R.B. Smith, both of Moulton; one stepdaughter, Reba Delashaw of Montgomery; one sister, Maggie E. Strickland of Moulton; 13 step-grandchildren; 29 step-great-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ron Smith, Gerald Bentley, Jackie Key, Kenneth Odell, Matthew Culver and Robert Harris.

Howard Ray South
65, Bryson Construction employee

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Howard Ray South, 65, of Falkville will be Monday at 2 p.m. at New Hope North Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Vinson officiating.

Burial will be in New Hope North Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends today from 3 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The body will be at the church two hours before the service.

Mr. South died Friday, April 14, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 27, 1934, in Morgan County. He was a Baptist and a construction worker for Bryson Construction. He was the grandfather of the late Destiny South.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie South; two sons, Frankie South of Cullman and Jason South of Falkville; five daughters, Rebecca Bagwell of Logan, Darlene Jacobs of Vinemont, Vickie Kelso of Fort Lewis, Wash., and Teresa Givens and Karen Burney, both of Falkville; one brother, Thurman South of Hartselle; four sisters, Gladys Green and Margie Robertson, both of Falkville, Mary Hazel of Decatur and Shirley Bailey of Fairview; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Scott Sellers, Randall Bailey, Chad Adcock, Chase South, Zachary South, Charles Green , Cecil Green and Scott Moore.

HARTSELLE -- Funeral arrangements for the Rev. Robert Sheats Summerford, 78, of Decatur, who died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at his home, will be announced by Peck Funeral Home.

Orville Lee Wallace
77, retired farmer

ATHENS -- Funeral for Orville Lee Wallace, 77, of Athens will be today at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Wallace officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Wallace died Friday, April 14, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Marion County. He was a Baptist and a retired farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Wallace; three sons, Gene Wallace and Donnie Wallace, both of Athens, and Jeff Wallace of Boaz; two daughters, Barbara Flannagan and Vickie Thompson, both of Athens; one sister, Fleeta Scott of Littleville; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Justin Towe, Tony Thompson, Ronnie Long, Michael Long, Robert Wallace and Daniel Wallace.

James William Burch Jr.
81, retired carpenter
ATHENS -- Funeral for James William Burch Jr., 81, of Anderson will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Lamb and Jere Barksdale officiating.

Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Burch died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. He was born June 1, 1918, in Lauderdale County. He was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He also served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

He is survived by one half-brother, Billy Holt of Athens.

Eula Grace Chambers
88, homemaker

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Eula Grace Chambers, 88, of Cullman was to be today at 2 p.m. at Williams-McCracken Funeral Home with the Rev. Horace Hall officiating. Burial was to be in Simcoe United Methodist Cemetery.

Mrs. Chambers died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at home. She was born Oct. 26, 1911, in Albertville to Archie and Lola Hightower Causey. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of Hugh Chambers and the mother of the late Pete Chambers.

She is survived by one son, Charles Kenneth Chambers of Cullman; four daughters, Janet Sears, Judy Glenn, Kay Sparkman and Rebecca Tankersley, all of Cullman; one brother, Leo Causey of California; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Jane Cobb Dutton
79, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Jane Cobb Dutton, 79, of Hartselle will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dutton died today, April 17, 2000, at her home. She was born March 22, 1921, in Morgan County to Earl C. and Novy Tapscott Cobb. She was a homemaker and member of Gum Springs Baptist Church. She was the widow of R.C. Dutton and mother of the late David R. Dutton.

She is survived by two sons, George G. Dutton of Hartselle and Kenneth R. Dutton of Decatur; three daughters, Margaret D. Cook and Karen D. Wells, both of Hartselle, and Carolyn D. Tapscott of Decatur; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Larry Dutton, Jerry Dutton, Mark Cook, Shane Dutton, Jeff Dutton and Joey Jenkins. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will be honorary pallbearers.

Christine Elkins
74, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Christine Elkins, 74, of Athens will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with Dan Binkley, Ross Melvin and Michael White officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Elkins died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born June 26, 1925, in Giles County, Tenn. She had lived in Alabama since 1952. She was a homemaker and a member of Marion Street Church of Christ. She was the widow of Buford Elkins, mother of the late Larry Johnson and sister of the late Rebecca Presnell and Hoyel Beasley.

She is survived by two sons, Randy Johnson of Athens and Dale Elkins of Lester; two daughters, Sherry Hovis of Toney and Teresa Adams of Athens; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Alan Hicks, Anthony Carter, Stanley Gibson, Dwight Banta, Leo Presnell and Teddy Dutton.

Irene Hartsell

HARTSELLE -- Funeral arrangements for Irene Hartsell, 80, of Mobile and formerly of Hartselle, who died today, April 17, 2000, at Cogburn Nursing Center Midtown in Mobile, will be announced by Peck Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday night at the funeral home.

Ruthie Mae Lang

MOULTON -- Funeral for Ruthie Mae Lang, 74, of Moulton will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Letson and the Rev. Calvin Jones officiating.

Burial will be in Smyrna Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lang died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at National Health Care Center of Moulton; She was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Lawrence County, to Joseph Jackson Lang and Maudie Lang.

Mrs. Lang is survived by two sons, Donald Ray Lang of Arkansas and Bobby Ray Lang of Hillsboro; one daughter, Mary Ann Lang of Moulton; four brothers, Walter Lang of Arkansas, David Lang and Harold J. Lang, both of Indiana, and Edward Lang of Hillsboro; and one sister, Hazel W. Letson of Moulton.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Heflin, Jason Heflin, Phillip Hamilton, Chris Hooie, Adam Turner and Terry Turner.
