Myrtle D. Bowen
88, retired spinner
GADSDEN -- Funeral for Myrtle D. Bowen, 88, of Gadsden will be Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Collier-Butler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bud Swindall and the Rev. Darrell Brown officiating.

Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bowen died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Gadsden Health Care Center. She was born Jan. 14, 1912, in Tennessee to Willie and Mattie Driver. She was a longtime resident of Etowah County and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was the widow of Fred Bowen and a retired spinner at Dwight Cotton Mill in Gadsden.

She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Powers of Austell, Ga. and Doris Hale of Des Moines, Iowa; three sons, Larry Bowen of Powder Springs, Ga., Wayne Bowen of Decatur and Melvin Bowen; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons and friends will be pallbearers. Nurses and aides on Station 1 at Gadsden Health Care Center will be honorary pallbearers.

Ruth Harrison Cost

HARTSELLE -- Funeral arrangements for Ruth Harrison Cost, 81, of Lake Charles, La., and formerly of Hartselle, who died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Lake Charles, will be announced by Peck Funeral Home.

Charles E. Guntharp Sr.
74, former funeral director

Funeral for Charles E. Guntharp Sr., 74, of Pike Road will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with Grady Guntharp officiating.

Burial will be Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Guntharp died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at his home. He was born May 25, 1925, in Golden, Miss., to James Otha Guntharp and Vera Daisy Wallace Guntharp. He was a graduate of Gupton-Jones Mortuary College and past president of Alabama Funeral Directors Association and Alabama State Board of Embalmers.

He was the former mayor of Decatur, former police commissioner, a member of the Alabama League of Municipalities and a member of Rising Sun Masonic Lodge No. 29 and Zomora Shrine Temple. He served in World War II in the 1st Division of the U.S. Marines Corps as a private first class. He was wounded in the battle of Peleliue in the South Pacific and received the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Alice R. "Jerry" Guntharp; two sons, Charles E. Guntharp Jr. of Mobile and Michael D. Guntharp of Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Peggy Guntharp Dilworth of Corinth, Miss., and Rebecca Guntharp Moon of Millbrook; one brother, James Louis Guntharp of Morris; one sister, Grace Hathcock of Ocala, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Irene Lawrence Hitt
83, senior companion

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Irene Lawrence Hitt, 83, of Falkville was to be today at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. J.W. Doss officiating.

Burial was to be in Lebanon Cemetery.

Ms. Hitt died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at her home. She was born April 25, 1917, in Morgan County to Ollie Mac and Mattie Lou Crow. She was stepmother of the late Dora Austin and the sister of the late Freeman Crow and Prentice Crow. She was a member of First Nazarene Church in Hartselle and a senior companion with Community Action.

She is survived by three sons, Gary Ricks and Wayne Lawrence, both of Hartselle, and Michael Lawrence of Falkville; one stepson, Denver Hitt of Tennessee; two daughters, Nancy Hardin and Shelia Holt, both of Falkville; two stepdaughters, Betty Wilhoite of Trinity and Pearl Blythe of Decatur; two brothers, Horace Crow and Bill Crow, both of Decatur; one half brother, Claude Pitts of Tennessee; one sister, Aline Brown of Decatur; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alacare Hospice Memorial Fund.

Micky Smith

Funeral for Micky Smith, 40, of Decatur will be tonight at 8 at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Ripley officiating.

Burial arrangements will be announced later. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born Aug. 4, 1959, in Chicago to Sammy Smith and Marilyn Brashier Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Carol T. Smith; one son, Gary Smith of Chicago; one daughter, Jessica Smith of Chicago; one stepson, Douglas Hughes of Decatur; one stepdaughter, Whitney Hughes of Decatur; his parents of Decatur; two brothers, Tommy Smith of Decatur and Jerry Smith of Moulton; one sister, Sandra Ray of Coleman; two grandmothers, Corrine Brashier of Decatur and Inez Smith of Jasper.

Memorials may be made to Gideon's International.

Doyle C. Townson
56, retired civil servant

Funeral for Doyle Coleman Townson, 56, of Decatur will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with Jimmy Ricketts officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Townson died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1943, in Lawrence County. He was a Vietnam War veteran and retired from civil service in Abilene, Texas. He was the son of the late Dutch Townson, the stepson of the late Bill Shirah and father of the late Denise Townson.

He is survived by his mother, Ola Mae Shirah of Decatur; and three brothers, Lewis Townson, Jackie Townson and Jurome Townson, all of Decatur.

Pallbearers will be John Fred Smith, Frank Hames, Joe Dotson, Ricky Hall, Jim Fields and Johnny Johnson.

Mahlon D. Vasser

ATHENS -- Funeral arrangements for Mahlon D. Vasser, 75, of Athens, who died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital, will be announced by Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.

Lilburn T. Wilkinson
78, NASA technician

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Lilburn Thomas Wilkinson, 78, of Eva, was to be today at 2 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Brown officiating.

Burial was to be in Enon Baptist Cemetery with Williams-McCracken Funeral Home directing. The body was to be in the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Wilkinson died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at his residence. He was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Cullman County, to Luther Carl Wilkinson and Bessie Lovell Wilkinson. He was a NASA technician.

Mr. Wilkinson is survived by his wife, Ethel Sanders Wilkinson; one son, Thomas O. Wilkinson of Birmingham; four daughters, Mary Ellen Holmes, Nina Gay Nelson and Regina Ann Thompson, all of Eva; and Doris Elaine Turnali, of Istanbul, Turkey; two brothers, Elmer J. Wilkinson of Covington, Ga., and Marlon L. Wilkinson of Vinemont; five sisters, Zelma Walker of Baileytown, Zola Ryan of Decatur, Velera Kinney of Eva, Christine Cochran of Somerville, and Doris Phillips of Cullman; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth Harrison Cost
81, retired accountant and licensed practical nurse

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Ruth Harrison Cost, 81, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Hartselle with the Rev. Brooks Barkley and the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at church one hour before the funeral.

Mrs. Cost died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Christus St. Patrick Hospital in Lake Charles, La. She was born Dec. 26, 1918, in Morgan County to Muncie and Glenn Harrison.

She was a graduate of Morgan County High School and was an accountant for the electric board for the city of Hartselle. Mrs. Cost was a licensed practical nurse and a member of First Baptist Church in Hartselle, where she served as Sunday School teacher for more than 60 years. She was the widow of William Mike Cost.

She is survived by one son, Michael Cost of Hartselle; one daughter, Ruth Abrahams of Lake Charles; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alabama Baptist Children's Home in Talladega, the First Baptist Church of Hartselle Library Fund, the John Croyle Big Oak Boys Ranch in Gadsden or any other charity.

Lyle Reed Holladay
61, retired science teacher

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Lyle Reed Holladay, 61, of Las Vegas, formerly of Morgan County, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Penn and the Rev. Dan Compton officiating, and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in East Franklin Cemetery in Phil Campbell. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mr. Holladay died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Columbia Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. He was born Jan. 1, 1939, in Danville to Clifford Clyde and Essie Crow Holladay. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was a 1956 graduate of Danville High School, and a graduate of Athens State College and The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He was a science teacher in the Morgan County and Alaska school systems until he retired in 1996. He served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Willingham Holladay; his mother of Hartselle; two daughters, Laura Ann Shackleford and Amy Lynn Holladay, both of Las Vegas; one brother, Kyle Holladay of Danville; three sisters, Doris Puckett of Danville, Sonja Holladay of Hartselle and Kathy Hildie of Fairbanks, Alaska; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Research and Service at 1325 E. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119.

Nancy Marie Houser
68, housewife

HARTSELLE -- Graveside service for Nancy Marie Houser, 68, of Somerville will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Burningtree Memorial Gardens with Peck Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Houser died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born May 8, 1931, in Cullman County to W.H. and Maude Estelle Atchley Moody. She was a housewife.

She is survived by one son, Toby Houser of Somerville; one daughter, Tina McCrory of Somerville; four brothers, Johnny Moody of Priceville, J.D. Moody of Huntsville, James Moody of Cullman and David Moody of Decatur; two sisters, Francis Speegle and Ann Hatfield, both of Priceville; and five grandchildren.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

James Allen Patrick
61, TVA lineman

ATHENS -- Funeral for James Allen Patrick, 61, of Elkmont will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home.

Graveside service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Patrick died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Big Springs Specialty Care Center in Huntsville. He was born July 3, 1938, in Limestone County. He was a Baptist and a member of the American Legion in Pulaski, Tenn. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a lineman with the Tennessee Valley Authority.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Strickland Patrick; one stepson, Toney Kelley of Rogersville; and two brothers, William Earnest Patrick of Tanner and Leonard Eugene Patrick of Elkmont.

Luevenia Taylor
84, homemaker

Funeral for Luevenia Taylor, 84, of Moulton will be Thursday at noon at Smith Chapel Congregational Methodist Episcopal Church in Moulton with the Rev. James Humphrey officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mrs. Taylor died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Terrace Manor Healthcare Center in Russellville. She was born June 15, 1915, in Lawrence County to Patrick and Nora Burgess.

She was a member of Smith Chapel CME Church and served on the Missionary Society and Stewardess Board. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Progressive Chapter No. 464. She was the widow of J.C. Taylor and mother of the late Dorothy Fouche.

She is survived by two grandsons, Billy Petty and Rodgerick Petty, both of Moulton; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Joe Jackson, Lee Taylor, Gary Hubbard, Ozell Stephenson, Posey Gholston and Oliver Owens.
