Freeman Dunn

TRINITY -- Funeral for Freeman Dunn, 79, of Trinity will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Gary Sartain and Keith Jones officiating.

Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Dunn died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born May 22, 1920, in Lawrence County to Mack and Alice Dunn. He was a member of Conway Baptist Church and a retired machinist from Automatic Screw Machine Products in Decatur.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Dunn; two sons, R.J. Dunn of Moulton and Donald Dunn of Trinity; one daughter, Rachel Dover of Jasper; one brother, John Dunn of Decatur; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

David Russell Frost
44, truck driver

ATHENS -- Graveside service for David Russell Frost, 44, of Athens will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Rankin officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Frost died Monday, May 1, 2000, at home. He was born June 5, 1955, in Lynnwood, Calif., to Don J. and Betty Jo Fountain Frost. He was a truck driver for Monarch Foods.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Frost; two sons, Brandon Frost and Deven Frost, both of Athens; one daughter, Amber Frost of Athens; his father and stepmother, Don and Eleanor Frost of Athens; one brother, Donald Allen Frost of Athens; one half brother, Steven Frost of Athens; three half sisters, Loraine Frost Duncan of Athens, and Darla Lee and Patty Hotchkinson, both of California; and his grandmother, Bethel Fountain of California.

Gerald M. Fuller
Infant

Graveside service for infant Gerald M. Fuller of Decatur will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing.

The infant died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, the day of his birth, at Decatur General Hospital.

He is survived by his parents, Gerald and Rosalyn Fletcher Fuller of Decatur.

Madeline Dix Reeves
96, Baptist women's leader

Graveside service for Madeline Dix Reeves, 96, of Decatur will be Friday following visitation at Decatur City Cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Champion, the Rev. W.K. Stephenson and Chip Colee officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reeves died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born March 4, 1904, in Montgomery to Thomas Murrell Dix and Frances Elizabeth Gray Dix. The family moved to Decatur in 1906, and Mrs. Reeves attended Decatur High School. After graduating from Judson College in 1925, she returned to Decatur and, after the death of her parents, worked in her father's business, T.M. Dix Real Estate and Insurance Co.

In 1934, she married the Rev. Walter Paschal Reeves Sr. and they served churches in Sheffield, Tuskegee and Lanett. Mrs. Reeves focused on Women's Missionary Union activities and served as Young People's Leader for WMU's Northern Alabama District. She was president of Alabama WMU from 1947 to 1952, and vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention WMU, where she served on its Executive Committee.

She served on the Judson College board of trustees for 23 years, taught Sunday school and visited Baptist missionaries around the world. She also was a member of the committee that recommended the removal of Howard College to its present location and changing its name to Samford University.

In 1993, in recognition of her contributions to the Baptist church, she was one of two pastor's wives featured at the annual meeting of the Alabama Baptist Historical Society.

She is survived by first cousins, Mary Sproles of Arlington, Texas, Nell Wade of Jackson, Miss., Annie Miers of New York City, Jean Allaway of Boston and Sarah Hale of Camden, Tenn.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church of Decatur, P.O. Box 1667, Decatur, AL 35602.

Jerome Vincent 'J.V.' Sailors

CLINTON, Tenn. -- Jerome Vincent "J.V." Sailors, 63, of Franklin, Tenn., a former Austin High School principal and Morgan County school superintendent, died suddenly at home Tuesday.

He was executive director of the Tennessee State Board of Education.

The funeral will be tonight at 8 EDT at First Baptist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Samuel Dean officiating.

Burial will be Friday at 3 p.m. CDT in Pineland Memorial Gardens in Centreville with Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the church.

Mr. Sailors was born June 3, 1936, in Bibb County to James and Vera Ragland Sailors. He came to Decatur in 1966 as an assistant principal at Austin and was principal from 1969-75, before being elected Morgan County superintendent. During his four-year term, county schools added more than $3 million in new construction, including the completion of Sparkman School.

Mr. Sailors, who earned his doctorate in school administration at The University of Alabama in 1971, was the Decatur Jaycees' Outstanding Young Educator and Alabama's Outstanding Young Educator in 1970.

In a 1979 interview, Sailors said: "The 12 years that my family has lived in Decatur and Morgan County have certainly been super years for us. We will remember fondly and with much love the many people that have been a part of our lives. I know that I received more than I have given, but I hope that I have made a contribution, however small, to the area that I love so much."

He was superintendent of Anniston schools from 1979-86. He also worked as teacher and coach in the Georgia school system, and was principal of Berry High School in Hoover and superintendent of Anderson County Schools in Clinton.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ward Sailors; two sons, Jerome Ward Sailors of Monroeville and Timothy David Sailors of Madison; one daughter, Kelly Margaret Ferguson of Atlanta; his mother of Centreville; one brother, James Sailors of Centreville; two sisters, Ann Kemmer and Edwina Greathouse, both of Centreville; and two grandsons.

Herman L. Tinker
92, business owner

DOTHAN -- Funeral for Herman L. Tinker, 92, of Dothan will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Wise officiating.

Burial will be in Memory Hill Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Dothan.

Mr. Tinker died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was born Feb. 9, 1908, in Perryville, Tenn., to John Allen and Mary Gertrude Arnold Tinker. He began a career with International Harvester in 1929 in Louisville, Ky., where he met and married Florence Malissa Gordon. The couple moved to Birmingham, where he was vice president of sales until relocating to Dothan in 1952, purchasing Whiddon Implement Co. and establishing Tinker Equipment Co. He retired from International Harvester in 1969 and operated Tinker Equipment until his death.

He was chairman of the Indigent Board of Southeast Alabama General Hospital and served on the Houston County Board of Education for 12 years, including two years as chairman. He was instrumental in founding the local Bee Keepers Association in 1976. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon since 1952 and a member of the Men's Chapel Sunday school class. He was Baptist Man of the Year in 1994. He also was a member of the Dothan Rotary Club since 1952 and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan Neville of Athens and Carolyn Matheny of Lynn Haven, Fla.; four sisters, Allie Mae Stevens, Sue Carrington and Johnnye Smith, all of Parsons, Tenn., and Nell England of Decaturville, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Bob Coffman, Harry Hall, Phillip Hardy, Charles Decker, Dee Brookshire and Morris Slingluff.

Deacons of First Baptist Church and members of the Men's Chapel Sunday school class will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Herman L. Tinker Memorial Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2025, Dothan, AL 36302-2025.

Rowena Marlow Beck
86, evangelist
MOULTON -- Funeral for Rowena Marlow Beck, 86, of Russellville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Elliott Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Beck died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Russellville Hospital. She was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Tuscaloosa to Roscoe and Margaret Patrick Marlow. She was a licensed evangelist with the Church of God of Prophecy. She and her late husband, the Rev. Grover C. Beck, ministered throughout Alabama for most of their lives. She was the mother of the late Billy R. Beck.

She is survived by one son, Arless Beck of St. Louis; four daughters, Sue Mann of Muscle Shoals, Nell Bruton of Mount Hope, Barbara Winter of Houston and Wanda Kitchens of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Harvey Marlow of Northport; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mike Mann, Tommy Bruton, Rocky Beck, Tab Beck, Brian Collins, Steve Collins and Jon Mark Collins. Members of the Sheffield Church of God of Prophecy and staff of Burns Nursing Home will be honorary pallbearers.

William Douglas Biggs
44, Athens Ready Mix employee

ATHENS -- Funeral for William Douglas Biggs, 44, of Athens was to be today at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Randy Davis officiating.

Burial was to be in Limestone Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Biggs died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home. He was born July 22, 1955, in Morgan County. He was an employee of Athens Ready Mix for 20 years. He was a member of Round Island Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gay Biggs; one son, Wayne Biggs of Athens; two daughters, Jenny Biggs and Missy Biggs, both of Athens; his stepmother, Christine Biggs of Athens; one brother, William Joe Biggs of Athens; one half-sister, Nita Terry of Decatur; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Rob Knapper, Macky Riggs, Frankie Riggs, Mike Peden, Rusty Cooper and Mark Dorne.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Round Island Baptist Church Building Fund.

Irene Roberts Christian
91, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Irene Roberts Christian, 91, of Danville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodger White officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Christian died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in Decatur. She was born June 3, 1908, in Morgan County to Milton Allie Roberts and Cora Daniel Roberts. She was a homemaker and a member of Harmony Grove Church. She was the widow of Monroe Christian, mother of the late Marie Christian Marrow and sister of the late Ernest Roberts and Essie Lauderdale.

She is survived by one brother, Allie Roberts of Danville.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy George, David Christian, Ronnie Long, Tommy Perry, Mike Champion, Mitchell Rigel and Jimmy Jett.

Norman Dean Cronin
63, retired shipping and receiving clerk

MOULTON -- Funeral for Norman Dean Cronin, 63, of Trinity, formerly of Portage, Ind., will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with John Fike officiating.

Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Cronin died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Birmingham. He was born April 21, 1937, in Picneyville, Ill., to William and Anna Cronin. He was a retired shipping and receiving clerk for Winers Pants Factory, where he worked for 26 years, and work at Allied Chemical in Indiana before moving to Alabama. He was a member of New Chicago Baptist Church in New Chicago, Ind.

He is survived by one son, Allen Cronin of Hobart, Ind.; two daughters, Patricia Waldrip of Tusla, Okla., and Bonnie Wykoff of Trinity; his mother, Anna Cronin of Ocean Springs, Miss.; two sisters, Deloris Cronin of Ocean Springs and Helen Kay Montgomery of Picneyville; and seven grandchildren.

Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Eula Mae Sanders Haines
99, retired sales clerk

TUSCUMBIA -- Funeral for Eula Mae Sanders Haines, 99, of Tuscumbia, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Tuscumbia with the Rev. Larry Harbin officiating and Morrison's Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Snowdown Cemetery in Iuka, Miss., with Morrison's Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The body will be in the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Haines died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Wellington Place in Muscle Shoals. She was born Jan. 1, 1901, in Iuka, and moved to Tuscumbia in 1951. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscumbia, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the American Association of Retired Persons. Mrs. Haines was employed at P.N. Hirsch from 1953 until it closed in 1970, and worked as a sales clerk at Davis Dry Goods until she retired in 1980. She was the wife of the late William Archer, and the mother of Roy Archer Haines and Lois Haines Everett.

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Haines Wagnon of Sheffield and Naomi Griffith of Nashville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Carroll Edward Sanders, Larry Dean Cook, Howard Galen Sanders Jr., James Curtis Hughes, Kenneth Williams and David Burcham.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 104 East Third Street, Tuscumbia, Ala. 35674.
