Evelyn Atkinson Woodis

HUNTSVILLE -- Graveside service for Evelyn Atkinson Woodis, 97, of Huntsville will be today at 2 p.m. at Huntsville Memory Gardens with the Rev. Clarence Davis officiating and Laughlin Service Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Woodis died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Nov. 4, 1902, in Valhermoso Springs to Owen D. and Clara Hardage Atkinson. She was a homemaker and a member of Madison United Methodist Church for 75 years. She was the widow of Shelby Woodis.

She is survived by one daughter, Clara McDonald of Huntsville; one brother, Owen B. Atkinson of Marietta, Ga.; and one sister, Marie Brown of Decatur.

Ruth Harrison Cost
81, retired accountant and licensed practical nurse

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Ruth Harrison Cost, 81, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Hartselle with the Rev. Brooks Barkley and the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at church one hour before the funeral.

Mrs. Cost died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Christus St. Patrick Hospital in Lake Charles, La. She was born Dec. 26, 1918, in Morgan County to Muncie and Glenn Harrison.

She was a graduate of Morgan County High School and was an accountant for the electric board for the city of Hartselle. Mrs. Cost was a licensed practical nurse and a member of First Baptist Church in Hartselle, where she served as Sunday School teacher for more than 60 years. She was the widow of William Mike Cost.

She is survived by one son, Michael Cost of Hartselle; one daughter, Ruth Abrahams of Lake Charles; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alabama Baptist Children's Home in Talladega, the First Baptist Church of Hartselle Library Fund, the John Croyle Big Oak Boys Ranch in Gadsden or any other charity.

Lyle Reed Holladay
61, retired science teacher

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Lyle Reed Holladay, 61, of Las Vegas, formerly of Morgan County, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Penn and the Rev. Dan Compton officiating, and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in East Franklin Cemetery in Phil Campbell. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mr. Holladay died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Columbia Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. He was born Jan. 1, 1939, in Danville to Clifford Clyde and Essie Crow Holladay. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was a 1956 graduate of Danville High School, and a graduate of Athens State College and The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He was a science teacher in the Morgan County and Alaska school systems until he retired in 1996. He served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Willingham Holladay; his mother of Hartselle; two daughters, Laura Ann Shackleford and Amy Lynn Holladay, both of Las Vegas; one brother, Kyle Holladay of Danville; three sisters, Doris Puckett of Danville, Sonja Holladay of Hartselle and Kathy Hildie of Fairbanks, Alaska; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Research and Service at 1325 E. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119.

Nancy Marie Houser
68, housewife

HARTSELLE -- Graveside service for Nancy Marie Houser, 68, of Somerville will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Burningtree Memorial Gardens with Peck Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Houser died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born May 8, 1931, in Cullman County to W.H. and Maude Estelle Atchley Moody. She was a housewife.

She is survived by one son, Toby Houser of Somerville; one daughter, Tina McCrory of Somerville; four brothers, Johnny Moody of Priceville, J.D. Moody of Huntsville, James Moody of Cullman and David Moody of Decatur; two sisters, Francis Speegle and Ann Hatfield, both of Priceville; and five grandchildren.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

James Allen Patrick
61, TVA lineman

ATHENS -- Funeral for James Allen Patrick, 61, of Elkmont will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home.

Graveside service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Patrick died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Big Springs Specialty Care Center in Huntsville. He was born July 3, 1938, in Limestone County. He was a Baptist and a member of the American Legion in Pulaski, Tenn. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a lineman with the Tennessee Valley Authority.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Strickland Patrick; one stepson, Toney Kelley of Rogersville; and two brothers, William Earnest Patrick of Tanner and Leonard Eugene Patrick of Elkmont.

Luevenia Taylor
84, homemaker

Funeral for Luevenia Taylor, 84, of Moulton will be Thursday at noon at Smith Chapel Congregational Methodist Episcopal Church in Moulton with the Rev. James Humphrey officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mrs. Taylor died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Terrace Manor Healthcare Center in Russellville. She was born June 15, 1915, in Lawrence County to Patrick and Nora Burgess.

She was a member of Smith Chapel CME Church and served on the Missionary Society and Stewardess Board. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Progressive Chapter No. 464. She was the widow of J.C. Taylor and mother of the late Dorothy Fouche.

She is survived by two grandsons, Billy Petty and Rodgerick Petty, both of Moulton; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Joe Jackson, Lee Taylor, Gary Hubbard, Ozell Stephenson, Posey Gholston and Oliver Owens.

Mahlon David Vassar
75, World War II veteran

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mahlon David Vassar, 75, of Athens was to be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Sharman and the Rev. Randy Davis officiating.

Burial was to be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mr. Vassar died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born April 30, 1925, in Limestone County.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Dot Vassar; one son, Greg D. Vassar of Athens; two daughters, Val Grubbs and Carrie Weigart, both of Athens; two brothers, Morris W. Vassar of Gadsden and Robert L. Vassar Jr. of Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Doc Thompson, Byron Brazier, Tommy Meadows, Kenneth Vassar, Billy Vassar and Jesse Vassar.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mary L. Woods
91, retired BellSouth supervisor

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Mary L. Woods, 91, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodger Collins officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Ms. Woods died Monday, May 1, 2000, at her home. She was born Aug. 12, 1908, in Chilton County to Willie Edward and Beulah Armstrong Lowe. She was a retired supervisor for BellSouth. She was the widow of H. Talmadge Woods and sister of the late Ann Lowe.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Mary Sue Abernathy

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Mary Sue Abernathy, 94, of Athens was to be today at 2 p.m. at Athens City Cemetery with Pat Smith officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Abernathy died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born May 1, 1906, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of Walnut Grove Methodist Church.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

David Winfred Pitts
59, retired welder

ATHENS -- Funeral for David Winfred Pitts, 59, of Athens will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. R.C. Craft officiating.

Burial will be in Legg Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Pitts died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at his home. He was born July 5, 1940, in Limestone County. He was a retired welder.

He is survived by one daughter, Jackie Pitts of Elkmont; three brothers, Robert Pitts of Columbia, Tenn., Morris Pitts and Billy Pitts, both of Elkmont; one sister, Linda McGlocklin of Decatur; and one grandchild.

Charles B. Plyler Sr.
62, salesman

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Charles B. Plyler Sr., 62, of Virginia Beach, Va., will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. J.C. Raynor officiating.

Burial will be in Herring Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Plyler died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Jacksonville, Fla. to Colen C. and Lillie Mae Small Plyler. He was a salesman.

He is survived by his wife, Linda G. Plyler; two sons, Charles B. Plyler Jr of Melbourne, Fla. and Kenneth Plyler of Dora; one daughter, Dorothy Oaks of Calera; one brother, Ralph Plyler of Bessemer; two sisters, Linda Merchant of Bessemer and Delta Finley of Calera; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Corrine Stockton
80, homemaker

TRINITY -- Funeral for Mary Corrine Stockton, 80, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Larry Lang officiating.

Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stockton died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at her home. She was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Lawrence County to Felix and Mattie McCleskey. She was a homemaker and a member of Five Points Christian Church. She was the widow of Dayton Leon Stockton.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Ridgeway of Decatur and Mary Dayton Morrow of Hartselle; one sister, Geneva Appleton of Moulton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Drew Morrow, David Etheredge, Roger Keenum, Gordon Appleton, Willard Coffey and Clayton Parker. Nephews will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
