Aurelia A. Smoke
91, retired business owner

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Funeral for Aurelia A. Smoke, 91, of St. Matthews, S.C., will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church in St. Matthews with the Rev. Fred Davis officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Dukes-Harley Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at her residence and at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Smoke died Monday, July 3, 2000, at The Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg. She was born Feb. 6, 1901, in Calhoun County to Jack D. Antley and Elizabeth Shuler Antley. A graduate of Winthrop College, she was a former schoolteacher and social worker in Calhoun County. She and her husband, William Gladden Huntt Smoke, founded and operated W.G. Insurance Co. She was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Red Cross, Calhoun County Library Board and St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was former chairman of the Republican Committee and was a delegate to the National Republican Convention.

She is survived by one son, Jack A. "Jan" Smoke of Green wood, S.C., formerly of Decatur; one sister, Addy A. Chandler of St. Matthews; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, St. Matthews, and Hospice of The Regional Medical Center, P.O. Box 2352, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

Mahlon Trimble
76, Decatur Utilities retiree

Funeral for Mahlon Trimble, 76, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Dunivant and the Rev. Sid McAnnally officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Trimble died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Aug. 8, 1923, in Decatur to Freda Smith Trimble and James Claude Trimble.

He was lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and a member and past president of Decatur Lions Club. He worked for Decatur Utilities for 28 years, where he managed the Gas Department and retired as manager of rates and contracts in 1988. He was an honorary member of the Alabama Natural Gas Association board of directors. He was vice chairman of the Public Gas Association of Alabama and president of Tennessee Valley Municipal Gas Association. He was a charter member of Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce and a member of the administrative board of First United Methodist Church. He was the widower of Virginia Lewis Trimble and the brother of the late Smith Trimble.

He is survived by one son, Roy Trimble of Atlanta; one daughter, Mary Faye Dunn of Decatur; two brothers, Fred Trimble of Decatur and Robert "Bobby" Trimble of Tempe, Ariz.; and two grandsons.

Pallbearers will be "Flip" Timberlake, George Godwin, Byron Carrell, Harold Smith, Frank "Juggie" Chenault and Robert Harris.

Members of the Lions Club and the Harris Lend-a-Hand Sunday school class will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.

Gladys Brooks Chitwood
81, homemaker

Funeral for Gladys Brooks Chitwood, 81, of Decatur will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Barnes officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Chitwood died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Orlando, Fla. She was born July 13, 1918, in Hartselle. She was a member of Ninth Street United Methodist Church for 38 years and an active member of the Susanna Ladies Circle.

She is survived by her husband, John H. Chitwood of Decatur; one son, Wayne B. Chitwood of Titusville, Fla.; one brother, Frank Brooks II of Las Cruses, N.M.; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Tuck, Mike Tuck, Irby Johnson, James Dunlop, John Mullican and Steve Pearson.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3000 Bob Wallace Ave. S.W., Huntsville, AL 35805.

Wilma Lois Compton
75, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Wilma Lois Compton, 75, of Elkmont will be Friday at 11 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with Bill Reynolds officiating.

Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9. Mrs. Compton died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at home. She was born May 28, 1925, in Huntsville. She was a homemaker and a member of Elkmont United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Mabron Leo Compton.

She is survived by three daughters, Mikki Rhyner and Cathy Lynn Ruf, both of Elkmont, and Rita Ann Stephens of Ardmore, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Larry Pylant, Greg Haynes, Mark Stanford, Bill Boldin, Dickie Hobbs and John Morris.

Dorothy Briscoe Crago
60, packing line worker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Dorothy F. Briscoe Crago, 60, of Cullman will be Friday at 11 a.m. at New Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Hicks officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

The body will be at the church 30 minutes before the funeral.

Mrs. Crago died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Woodland Medical Center in Cullman. She was born Feb. 24, 1940, in Morgan County to John Monroe Briscoe and Gladys May Kinney Briscoe. She was a packing line worker at Goldenrod Broilers in Cullman.

She is survived by her husband, Frank D. Crago of Cullman; two sons, David Ray Foster of Hazel Green and Benny Harold Foster of Priceville; four daughters, Helen Susanne Foster and Teresa Faye Foster , both of Arab, and Lisa M. Foster Miller and Angel Rene Foster Cravens, both of Decatur; one brother, Leon Briscoe of Hanceville; two sisters, Drucilla Light of Union Hill and Marie Helms of Falkville; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Danny Paul Briscoe, Gary Briscoe, Jason Foster , Adam Foster , Brandon Miller and Jason Foster .

Grace Rushing Davis

CULLMAN -- Graveside service for Grace Rushing Davis, 87, of Vinemont was to be today at 11 a.m. at Cullman City Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating and Williams-McCracken Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Davis died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Lawrence County to James Rushing and Vana Lou Wright Rushing. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Bobby Stephenson of Madison; two daughters, Betty Stephenson Hopper of Hartselle and Diana Stephenson Singleton of Covington, Ga.; one brother, Robert Lee Rushing of Hartselle; two sisters, Ruth Johnson of Toledo, Ohio, and Marie Long of Battle Creek, Mich.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Lou Ena Johnson Harbison
78, homemaker

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Funeral for Lou Ena Johnson Harbison, 78, of Tallahassee will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park with Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home-Riggins Road Chapel directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Harbison died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, in Tallahassee. She was born March 12, 1922, in Booneville, Miss., and moved to Florida in 1942. She was a homemaker and member of Faith Baptist Church, where she was active in the Senior Adults Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her husband, Rhebert Hill Harbison Sr. of Tallahassee; two sons, Ron Harbison of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Rheb Harbison Jr. of Tallahassee; two daughters, Jeanette Harbison Capozzielli of Charlotte, N.C., and Diane Harbison Blackburn of Tallahassee; three brothers, Harless Johnson, Pete Johnson and Bill Johnson, all of Decatur; one sister, Hessie Laurence of Decatur; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ruby Abernathy Lawler
77, retired sales manager

ATHENS -- Funeral for Ruby Abernathy Lawler, 77, of Athens will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Bud White officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Mrs. Lawler died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at home. She was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Limestone County. She was a retired district manager for World Book Encyclopedia and a member of Northside Church of Christ.

She is survived by two sons, Phillip Lawler and Jerry Lawler of Athens; four brothers, Van Abernathy, Billy Abernathy and Willard Abernathy, all of Athens, and Kenneth Abernathy of Columbia, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County.

Harold A. 'Hal' McClanahan Jr.
71, retired Air Force colonel

HARTSELLE -- Memorial service for Harold A. "Hal" McClanahan Jr., 71, of Hartselle will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. W.G. Henry, the Rev. Harold Thompson and the Rev. W.L. Cole officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. McClanahan died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Oct. 28, 1928, in Hartselle to Harold A. McClanahan Sr. and Billie Rhoden McClanahan. He graduated from Morgan County High School in 1947 and Auburn University in 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-79, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He graduated from the Air Force Intelligence School and the Air Command and Staff College.

He served tours of duty in Europe, Hawaii and Southeast Asia. He was chief of public affairs for USSAG/7AF, Nakom Phanom in Thailand. While assigned to the Pacific Command, he was selected aide-de-camp for Adm. John McCain, CINCPAC.

During his Pentagon tour of duty, he was the Air Staff and Department of Defense coordinator for the Bicentennial Exposition on Science and Space Technology at Kennedy Space Center, at Headquarters Strategic Command, 8th Air Force, 12th Air Force and the Air Training Command.

Mr. McClanahan's awards and honors included USAF Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, NASA Exceptional Service and Achievement Medal, USAF Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Department of Defense Meritorious Service Medal, USAF Longevity Medal with Silver Clusters, National Defense Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Occupation of Germany Medal.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hartselle.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Stewart McClanahan; one son, Harold Stewart McClanahan of Snellville, Ga.; one daughter, Martha M. Pierce of Dayton, Va.; his mother of Hartselle; one brother, Jack R. McClanahan of Huntsville; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Trenton Deqwon Moseley Jr.

Graveside service for infant Trenton Deqwon Moseley Jr. of Moulton will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Moulton Community Cemetery with the Rev. Lawson Fletcher officiating and Reynolds Funeral Home Directing.

The infant died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, the day of his birth, at Decatur General Hospital.

He is survived by his father, Trenton D. Moseley of Decatur, and his mother, Candace Echols of Moulton; his grandmothers, Bonnie Moseley of Decatur and Belinda Echols of Moulton; his grandfather, Posey Gholston of Moulton; and great-grandmothers, Wilodean Echols of Moulton and Elizabeth Walker of Moulton.

Mary Gertrude Bond Shankle
90, homemaker

TRINITY -- Funeral for Mary Gertrude Bond Shankle, 90, of Decatur and formerly of Trinity will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mount View Baptist Church with the Rev. Junior Hale officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Parkway Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be in the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Shankle died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born July 25, 1909, in Lawrence County to Bentley Bond and Clementine Steward Bond. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount View Baptist Church. She was the widow of Luther Shankle and the mother of the late Harold Shankle and Rayburn Shankle.

She is survived by three sons, Gene Shankle of Sulligent, and Floyd Shankle and Loyd Shankle, both of Trinity; seven daughters, Nell Shankle Rose of Chalybeate, Opal Shankle Voss and Hazel Shankle Basden, both of Decatur, Audrey Shankle Cartee and Marie Shankle Letson, both of Moulton, and Kay Shankle Trussell and Gail Shankle Terry, both of Trinity; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; one step granddaughter; and eight step great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Edna Inez Black Stone

Mrs. Stone died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at home. She was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Limestone County to Cub and Eusa Black. She was a homemaker and a member of Oneal Church of Christ. She was the sister of the late Gilbert and Dale Black.

She is survived by her husband, Doyce Stone; three sons, James Stone of Meridianville, Cub Stone of Elkmont and Joe Bob Stone of Ardmore, Tenn.; two daughters, Doris Stone and Mary Robinson, both of Athens; one brother, Buster Black of Athens; and three grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Brian Robinson, Glen Pressnell, Jeff Robinson, Tommy Smith, Scott Robinson and Lemon Britton.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County.
