Thomas Edgar Carter
83, World War II veteran

ATHENS -- Funeral for Thomas Edgar Carter, 83, of Lester will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Bud White officiating.

Burial will be Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Carter died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Limestone County. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired civil service employee from Redstone Arsenal. He was a member of Northside Church of Christ, North Border Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Woodmen of the World for more than 40 years.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Estelle Carter; two sons, David Thomas Carter of Muscle Shoals and William Alton Carter of Memphis; two sisters, Marie Norman and Lois Resler, both of Athens; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Carter, Tommy Carter, Steve Carter, Curtis Usery, Buddy Locke and Danny Locke.

Martha Nina Downs
76, retired meatpacker

Funeral for Martha Nina Downs, 76, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Hill and the Rev. Ronnie Bullard officiating.

Burial will be in Raper Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Downs died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in Decatur. She was born April 29, 1924, in Flint to Noel Graham and Hattie Graham. She was a member of Stoney Acres Baptist Church and a retired meatpacker from Decatur Packing, where she worked for 14 years.

Survivors include her husband, Lonnie Downs of Trinity; three sons, Dennis Billings of Chattanooga, Jerome Downs of Green sboro, N.C., and Thomas Downs of Las Vegas; one daughter, Ann Dumas of Trinity; one sister, Sadie Hall of Georgia; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jerome Downs Jr., Adam Lindsey, Benny Dumas, Tony Dumas, Jeff Dumas and Josh Dumas.

Ezma Coffey Eaton
89, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Ezma Coffey Eaton, 89, of Moulton will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Moulton Church of Christ with Bill Becker and Andy White officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Lawrence Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Eaton died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at National Health Care. She was born May 6, 1911, in Lawrence County. She was a homemaker and a member of Moulton Church of Christ. She was the widow of Charlie Coffey and Fred Eaton and the mother of the late Laymon Coffey.

Survivors include one daughter, Ann Coffey White of Moulton; two brothers, Almon Moody of Michigan and Jimmy Moody of Milbrook; seven sisters, Margarite Hassett, Mable Harrison and Marie Brazel, all of Michigan, Sandra Whatley and Sara Bankston, both of Georgia, and Helen Waters and Joyce Rojem, both of Moulton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Barclay Key, Jonathon Layman, John Allen, Stanley Johnson, Jerry Waters, Clay Coffey, Dr. Charles Coffey and Dr. Tommy Moody.

Elders and deacons of Moulton Church of Christ will be honorary pallbearers.

Casey Leigh Elders
Infant

ATHENS -- Funeral for infant Casey Leigh Elders of Anderson will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Rick Craft officiating.

Burial will be in Reunion Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

The infant died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born July 28, 2000, in Decatur. She was the granddaughter of the late Jimmy Elders.

Survivors include her parents, Ricky and Leigh Elders of Anderson; one brother, Caleb Elders of Anderson; her grandparents, Shirley Elders, Dwight Woods, and Sandra and Richard Price , all of Athens; and her great-grandmother, Ozell Elders of Athens.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Pyron, Russell Stinnett, Jim Vanderpool and Michael Pierce.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County.

Bobby Franklin Hagood
68, security guard

Funeral for Bobby Franklin Hagood, 68, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene McNutt officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hagood died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Lincoln Regional Hospital in Fayetteville, Tenn. He was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Decatur to Howard Franklin Hagood and Pauline King Newman. He was a security guard and a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Ronnie Hagood and Donnie Hagood, both of Decatur; one daughter, Sheila Millwood of Decatur; and one sister, Betty Hagood Rowe of Decatur.

Pallbearers will be Paul Craft, David Hill, David Messer, Bobby Young, Avery Millwood and Ronnie Farris.

Bessie Compton Haney
87, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Bessie Compton Haney, 87, of Athens will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Tanner United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Gooch officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Haney died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Jan 25, 1913, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a Limestone County High School graduate. She was a member of Tanner United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and The Page Circle. She was the widow of Louis Haney.

Survivors include three sons, Louis Haney Jr., Leon Haney and Tink Haney, all of Athens; three daughters, Faye Shaw of Huntsville, and Wanda Menefee and Jerre Burgreen, both of Athens; one brother, Charles Compton of Elkmont; three sisters, Ruth Black and Viola Turner, both of Athens, and Loeita Locke of Elkmont; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Stan Menefee, Zachary Burgreen, Frederick Burgreen, Will Haney, Adam Haney and Clay Haney.

Granddaughters will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Tanner United Methodist Church or Hospice of Limestone County.

William Reynolds
75, retired salesman

TULSA, Okla. -- Funeral for William Reynolds, 75, of Tulsa will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Oliver Whisenhunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Darryl DeBorde officiating.

Burial will be in Fort Gibson National Cemetery.

Mr. Reynolds died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Veterans Hospital in Muskogee, Okla. He was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Athens to Williams Reynolds and Ella Burrough Reynolds. He was a Mason and was retired as a self-employed salesman. He was formerly married to Leora Reynolds.

Survivors include three daughters, Judith Tucker of Bullard, Texas, Pam Litton of College Station, Texas, and Tenna Whitsel of Tulsa; one sister, Olive Black of Athens; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Catherine Borie
87, homemaker
Memorial service for Catherine Borie, 87, of Decatur will be Tuesday night at 6 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Randon H. Jackson officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Borie died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Charleston, S.C., to Eben Horton and Lomie McCarty Horton. She was a homemaker and the widow of Richard D. Borie Sr.

Survivors include two sons, Richard D. Borie Jr. of Decatur and Charles E. Borie of Crestview, Fla.; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; and two step-granddaughters.

Cecile Pauline Taylor Bryant
85, Dairy Dip employee

MOULTON -- Funeral for Cecile Pauline Taylor Bryant, 85, of Town Creek will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Moore officiating.

Burial will be in Providence Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bryant died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. She was born Nov. 25, 1914, in Lawrence County. She worked at Dairy Dip in Town Creek.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Bryant of Lexington and Grady Larry Bryant of Elgin; four daughters, Bettie Stricklin of Decatur, Brenda Witt of Tuscumbia, Bobbie Nicholson and Shelia Liles, both of Town Creek; and two sisters, Ruby Scott of Florence and Lizzie Curruth of Muscle Shoals.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Nellie Rainey Gardner
81, retired clerk

Private memorial service for Nellie Rainey Gardner, 81, of Moulton will be directed by Roselawn Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gardner died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Sept. 1, 1919, in Rogersville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Decatur and was retired from Redstone Arsenal, where she worked as a clerk. She was the widow of Hub Gardner and the mother of the late John Mark Gardner.

Survivors include two sons, Herbert Gardner Jr. of Decatur and Michael Gardner of Trinity; two daughters, Theresa Green Gilbert of Moulton and Kathy Beard of Decatur; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ovella Marie Miller

BIRMINGHAM -- Funeral for Ovella Marie Miller, 73, of Tarrant City was to be today at 3 p.m. at Ridout's Roebuck Chapel.

Burial was to be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at her home. She was born June 27, 1927, in Lawrence County to Major Cole and Opal Smith Cole. She was a member of Valley East Baptist Church of Pinson. She was the sis- ter of the late Oron Cole and Kyle Cole.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Gordon E. Miller; her mother of Tuscumbia; two brothers, Frank "Frances" Cole of Muscle Shoals and Willie B. Cole of Hartselle; and five sisters, Nell Shelton of Trinity, and Scenia Stonecipher, Sue Brown, Janice Vandiver and Carolyn Hasha, all of Tuscumbia.

Sandra June Bitting Myers
44, house manager

Funeral for Sandra June Bitting Myers, 44, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Decatur AME Zion Church with the Rev. Larry Jacobs officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with Sharpley Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Myers died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born May 8, 1956, in Akron, Ohio, to Harry Bitting and Anna Bitting. She was educated in the Akron school system. She was employed at Lurleen B. Wallace Developmental Center for 9½ years and Volunteers of America as a house manager. She was a member of First Decatur AME Zion Church and president of the Decatur Cadet Core Parent Association.

Survivors include two sons, Anthony "Tony" Myers of Cullman and Domeon S. Myers of Decatur; three daughters, Crissy A. Myers, Santina D. Myers and Mikila K. Myers, all of Decatur; two foster daughters, Carol McDaniel and Melanie Hagen, both of Decatur; two brothers, Eugene West of California and Raymond West of Pennsylvania; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Clyde Bolden, Tony Myers, Billy Cox, Jeremy Deloney, James Orr and Tarrius Sykes.
