Hilda E. Lanier
82, retired dietary manager

Funeral for Hilda E. Lanier, 82, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Brooks Barkley officiating.

Burial will be in New Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lanier died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born April 9, 1918, in Decatur to Ernest N. Hawkins and Mattie Rebecca Cook Hawkins. She was retired from the former Tennessee Valley Tuberculosis Hospital, where she was the dietary manager. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Sedama Poole of Decatur; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Ray Jett, Lyle Poteet, Ed Poteet, Alfred Poole, John Austin Jr. and Dillard McLeroy.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church or Morgan County Mental Health Association.

Lance Wade Montgomery
52, farmer

MOULTON -- Funeral for Lance Wade Montgomery, 52, of Moulton will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Shelton officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Elliott Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Montgomery died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at his home. He was born Sept. 30, 1948, in Mobile to J. Marion Montgomery and Erin Stuart Montgomery. He was a farmer and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and the American Quarterhorse Association.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Posey Montgomery; one son, Wyatt Montgomery of Moulton; his parents of Moulton; and one brother, Mark Montgomery of Moulton.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Rainey, Don Stevens, Rickey Posey, Ken Baggett, Dickie Gonzales and Tony Williams.

Matthew Wesley Swearengin
7, student

Funeral for Matthew Wesley Swearengin, 7, of Somerville will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church with Dr. Walt Schmidt officiating.

Burial will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

The child died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born May 3, 1993, in Decatur to Larry and Jane Swearengin. He was a home-schooled second-grade student.

Survivors include his parents of Somerville; three sisters, Holly Marie Wallace of Jonesburg, Mo., and Savannah Iby Swearengin and Tara Lee Swearengin, both of Somerville; one brother, Jeffrey Scott Swearengin of Tulsa, Okla.; and his grandparents, Fred and Helen Mullins of Trinity.

Pallbearers will be Mark Wallace, G.W. Bowers, Drew Matthews and Jeffrey Swearengin.

Curtis Wayne Willard
52, carpenter

ATHENS -- Funeral for Curtis Wayne Willard, 52, of Elkmont will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Keenum officiating.

Burial will be in Fords Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Willard died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his home. He was born June 3, 1948, in Limestone County to Will and Lela Willard. He was a carpenter and a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa Willard; one son, Chucky Willard of Toney; his mother of Toney; three brothers, Kenneth Willard of Athens, John Willard of McMinnville, Tenn., and Chester Williams of Huntsville; one sister, Sarah Stoner of Athens; one grandson; and one step-granddaughter.

James Clifford Bates
72, former grocery store owner

ATHENS -- Funeral for James Clifford Bates, 72, of Athens was to be today at 10 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Rodney Britton and Don Osborne officiating.

Burial was to be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Bates died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital.

He was born July 15, 1928, in Limestone County to Edward Bates and Lena Hargrove Bates. He was the former owner and operator of Bates Grocery and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include four sons, Jimmy Bates, Jeff Bates, Gary Bates and Marty Bates, all of Athens; two sisters, Lois McMullins of Muscle Shoals and Bertha Kyle of Athens; and five grandchildren.

James 'Jim' David Curtis
85, carpenter

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for James "Jim" David Curtis, 85, of Falkville will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Sparks and the Rev. Pat Lawrence officiating.

Burial will be in Falkville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Curtis died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center.

He was born June 3, 1915, in Lawrence County to George Baxter Curtis and Mary Ellen Parker Curtis. He was a self-employed carpenter.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann Douglas of Falkville and Wanda Sue Lewis of Saraland; two sisters, Ethel Smith and Grace Vinson, both of Hartselle; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Robert S. Gilbert
82, retired truck driver

Funeral for Robert S. Gilbert, 82, of Toney will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Durham officiating.

Burial will be in Burningtree Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 4 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Gilbert died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital East. He was born July 8, 1918, in Limestone County to Russell Gilbert and Inda Batts Gilbert. He was a retired truck driver. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and a resident of Madison Manor Nursing Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Hall of Toney; one brother, R.B. Gilbert of Huntsville; one sister, Frances Shaw of Decatur; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Earl Gilbert, Joey Elwell, Brent Shaw, Rodney Lay, Jerry Lay and Tony Brooks.

Thomas Lewis
87, retired coalminer

HARLAN, Ky. -- Funeral for Thomas Lewis, 87, of Moulton will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Landis officiating.

Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Lawrence Funeral Home in Moulton.

Mr. Lewis died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. He was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Harlan County, Ky., to Charlie Lewis and Sally McGlamery Lewis. He was a retired coal miner. He was the father of the late William David Lewis, who was killed in action in Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Kyla Hensley Lewis; two sons, Charles Ronnie Lewis of Hattiesburg, Pa., and Tommy Lewis of Decatur; two daughters, Starlet Jones of Moulton and Sandra Beltran of Decatur; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.

Charles Wilson Lindsey
86, retired teacher

HICKORY, N.C. -- A private memorial service for Charles Wilson Lindsey, 86, of Newland, N.C., will be announced by the family. Arrangements are being handled by Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Lindsey died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C. He was born Aug. 3, 1914, in Danville to George W. Lindsey and Sue Jesse Speake Lindsey. He was a Navy pilot. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from then Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama, and his master's degree from George Peabody College in Nashville. He taught in Alabama, Florida and California school systems until his retirement from the San Diego school system, where he was employed as a counselor. He returned to Danville for a short time before moving to the New York City area. He moved to Newland in the early 1990s. He was the brother of the late Hugh Lindsey, James Lindsey, George Lindsey Jr., and Elliott Lindsey.

Survivors include one son, Charles Allen Lindsey of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Gweneth Jeter Lindsey, Jan Wilson Lindsey and Jane Michael Lindsey; and one sister, Martha Dixie Harward of Pahrump, Nev.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society.

Horace E. Millican
83, retired carpenter

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Horace E. Millican, 83, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Henderson officiating.

Burial will be in Bell Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Millican died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born April 20, 1917, in Morgan County to Charles W. Millican and Ethel V. Eason Millican. He was a member of Missionary Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II, having served from 1940 until 1946. He was retired as a carpenter from Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant.

Survivors include his wife, Eveline M. Millican; two daughters, Regina Stisher of Falkville and Nora Smith of Athens; three brothers, Arvil Millican of Springhill, Albert Millican of Falkville and Ralph Millican of Holly Pond; two sisters, Iva Mae Alvis of Gardendale and Vera Arnette of Stockbridge, Ga.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Donald Alvis, Rick Alvis, Michael Landers, Mitchell Landers, Phillip Landers and Lester Nuby.

Rhoda May Graham Reed
58, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Rhoda May Graham Reed, 58, of Moulton was to be today at 11 a.m. at Elliot Funeral Home with Carroll Hall officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. The family was to receive friends until time for the service.

Mrs. Reed died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Jan. 26, 1942, in Oregon. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, James Edward Reed; two sons, Thomas Reed of St. Joseph, Tenn., and James Robert Reed of Moulton; and two daughters, Judith Goodwin of Hillsboro and Denise Reed of Moulton.

Cheri Chandler Shipper

FLORENCE -- Memorial services for Cheri Chandler Shipper, 72, of Florence, who died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at her home, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Elkins Funeral Home directing.

A rosary will be tonight at 7 at the funeral home with family receiving friends afterward.

Sarah Eliza Benford Wimberly
72, retired nurse

CHICAGO -- Funeral for Sarah Eliza Benford Wimberly, 72, of Chicago will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wimberly died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at her home. She was born Feb. 2, 1928, in Decatur. She was a nurse at Hines Illinois Veterans Administration Medical Center until her retirement.

Survivors include one son, William S. Dawson Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Annie D. Dawson of Nashville; one sister, Genevive Wright of Chicago; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.
