Beulah Frances Young Pettey
95, retired teacher

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Beulah Frances Young Pettey, 95, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Hartselle with George Nancarrow officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Pettey died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 23, 1906, in Lawrence County to Charles Abner Young and Nettie Raymond Brooks Young. She was a Lawrence County High School graduate. She earned a bachelor's degree from Florence State Teachers College, a master's degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and did postgraduate work at the University of Florida. She was a teacher for 46 years in the Lawrence and Morgan county school systems. She spent her last 17 years teaching at Hartselle and retired in 1971 as a counselor at Hartselle Junior High School, where the National Junior Honor Society is named for her.

Mrs. Pettey was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartselle, where she taught Sunday School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Mu Chapter for 60 years. She was a member of the National Education Association, Alabama Education Association, National Retired Teachers Association and Alabama Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Starlight Garden Club and Morgan County Mental Health Association. She was the widow of J.C. Pettey and sister of Buford Lambert Young.

Survivors include two nephews, Charles E. Young of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Jackson Young of Gadsden; and two nieces, Frances Vest Rowe of Falkville and Lucy Vest Slater of Union Grove.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Burnum, John Burnum, Mike Burnum, Paul Parker, Pick Rowe and Mike Wiggins.

Memorials may be made to Hartselle Junior High School Library or Honor Society or First Baptist Church of Hartselle.

Martha Rebecca Roberts
88, homemaker, former Sweet Sue Poultry Co. employee

ATHENS -- Funeral for Martha Rebecca Roberts, 88, of Athens will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Charles M. Andrews officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Athens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Roberts died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born April 28, 1912, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a former Sweet Sue Poultry Co. employee. She was a member of Central Church of Christ. She was the widow of Floy Roberts and the mother of James Harold and John Harlan Roberts.

Survivors include one son, William Roberts of Athens; four daughters, Joyce Thornton of Elkmont and Norma Jean Tribble, Mary Elizabeth Hobbs and Brenda Wellden, all of Athens; one sister, Eva Robison of Athens; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Tribble, Mike Tribble, Tim Thornton, Harlan Thornton, Steve Thornton and Jason Hennessee.

Robert H. Sandlin
74, retired truck driver

ATHENS -- Funeral for Robert H. Sandlin, 74, of Elkmont was to be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Joe Olson officiating. Burial will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Sandlin died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Limestone County. He was a retired truck driver and a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Hargrove Sandlin; four sons, Neil Sandlin of Birmingham, Garry Sandlin of Athens and Ronald Glenn Sandlin and Mike Sandlin, both of Elkmont; his mother, Athelene Sandlin of Athens; three brothers, John Thomas Sandlin of Elkhart, Ind., Wayne Sandlin of Athens and George L. Sandlin of Elkmont; four sisters, Ruth Cain, Jane Beddingfield, Nella Dean McKee and Caro-Lyn McAllister, all of Athens; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be Thomas S. McKee, Wayne Sandlin, Jackson R. McKee, Ray Atkinson, Glen Beddingfield II and Stanley Atkinson.

Billy Brooks Tyler
65, investment representative

Funeral for Billy Brooks Tyler, 65, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Austinville Church of God with the Rev. Harold Coomer, the Rev. Paul White, and Mike Free officiating.

Burial will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at Austinville Church of God.

Mr. Tyler died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at his home. He was born May 6, 1935, to George E. Tyler and Edna L. Gillen Tyler in Burdette, Ark. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Korean War and was an investment representative for AFS Financial Services of Decatur.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Tyler; two daughters, Teri Holland of Somerville and Marcia Pangle of Carlisle, Ark.; one brother, Kenneth Tyler of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three sisters, Myrl Evans of Decatur, Lucille Vescova of Memphis, and Jean McBride of Tempe, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Don Rand, James Carroll, Dan Richardson, Gene Smith, Mark Herchenhahn, Dick Seaton, Donnie Jones and Frank Harvey. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Businessmen's Bible Study Group.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley or a favorite charity.

Morris Calvin Black
78, Realtor
Funeral for Morris Calvin Black, 78, of Decatur will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Brock officiating.

Internment will be in Roselawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Black died today, March 13, 2001, at his home. He was born May 18, 1922, in Decatur to Lonnie M. Black and Lois Morris Black. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany. He was retired from Wolverine Tube and was a Realtor and builder. He was a lifetime member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mullins Black; two sons, Morris C. Black Jr. and Ronald K. Black, both of Decatur; four brothers, the Rev. John Otha Black of Montgomery, Dr. Gene Black of Birmingham, and Lonnie Greer Black and Joe Black, both of Decatur; one sister, Mary Houston of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Black Jr., Billy J. Doran III, Russ Prickett, Jay Lowery, Howell Black and Aaron Dios.

Carnie Stancil Gober
60, machine operator

RED BAY -- Funeral for Carnie Stancil Gober, 60, of Decatur will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home in Red Bay with the Rev. Doug Hemphill officiating.

Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Gober died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 19, 1941, in Russellville to Jack Gober and Thelma Gober. He retired as a machine operator with Monsanto Corp., now Solutia, after 31 years. He was a member of Red Bay First United Methodist Church and an Army veteran of Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Sue Gober; one daughter, Melissa Brown of Petal, Miss.; one sister, Colleen Smith of Belmont, Miss.; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Doug Davis, Larry Hammock, Charlie Henson, James A. Marbutt, Bobby Nelson and Bill Nabers.

Leona Groce
94, homemaker

ATHENS -- Graveside services for Leona Groce, 94, of Athens will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Penn Mullowney officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Groce died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. She was born Jan. 27, 1907, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and attended the Baptist Church. She was the widow of Clifford Groce and the grandmother of Peggy Hunter John.

Survivors include two sons, Robert A. Groce of Tanner and Bobby Groce of Athens; three daughters, Mary Beth "Sibby" Groce Mullowney of Springfield, Va., and Christine Groce Hunter and Mavoline Groce Hill, both of Athens; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Larry Groce, Tommy Groce, Jerry Groce, Tim Hunter, Gary Horton, Mark Horton, Michael Mullowney and Eric Smith.

Thomas D. Holcomb
81, retired farmer

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Thomas D. Holcomb, 81, of Baileyton will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Welcome Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Vincent and the Rev. Terry Blankenship officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Moss Service Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Holcomb died Monday, March 12, 2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 28, 1919, in Morgan County to Amos Holcomb and Temple Jane Jones Holcomb. He was a retired farmer and a Baptist minister.

Survivors include one son, Gary Holcomb of Baileyton; one daughter, Marcelene Holcomb of Guntersville; one brother, Arvil Holcomb of Baileyton; one sister, Martha Davis of Eva; five-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Cullman Hospice.

Lenore Jane Leach
78, Red Cross volunteer

ATHENS -- Funeral for Lenore Jane Leach, 78, of San Antonio, Texas, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Garth Chapel of First United Methodist Church of Athens with the Rev. Steven Screws officiating.

Burial will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens with McConnell Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Leach died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Texas. She was born May 26, 1922, in Uniontown, Penn. She lived in Limestone County from 1960 until 1998. She was a Red Cross volunteer at Athens-Limestone Hospital and a member of First United Methodist Church in Athens. She was the widow of H.K. "Bill" Leach.

Survivors include one son, Ray Leach of San Antonio; one daughter, Karen Leonard of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Robert Laughead of Alexander City and Tom Laughead Anchorage, Alaska; and four grandchildren.

Effer Goode Mason

ATHENS -- Effer Goode Mason, 90, of Rogersville died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. Spry Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

78, insurance company retiree

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Sarah Carilsa Whitten, 78, of Hartselle was to be today at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Otto Yount officiating.

Burial was to be in Hartselle Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Whitten died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born April 3, 1922, in Morgan County to Steve Eli Allen and Ora Lee Breeding Allen. She was a member of Somerville Church of God. She was retired from Mutual Savings Insurance Company, where she worked in the microfilm room.

Survivors include one daughter, Idell Whitten of Hartselle; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Pallbearers were to be Larry Allen, Rickey Allen, Rickey E. Allen, Terry Johnson, Carl Livingston and Carrell Livingston.
