Elizabeth Marie Hatchett

ATHENS -- Funeral for Elizabeth Marie Hatchett, 72, of Elkmont was to be today at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Joel Logan and the Rev. Chester Jones officiating.

Burial was to be in Hatchett Cemetery.

Mrs. Hatchett died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at St. Thomas Hospital. She was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Giles County, Tenn. She was a homemaker and a member of Sweet Springs Baptist Church. She was the widow of Charles Hatchett and the mother of Keith Hatchett and Mike Hatchett.

Survivors include one son, Johnny Hatchett of Ardmore; two daughters, Janet Seedorf of Ardmore and Connie Clark of Elkmont; one sister, Imogene Wallace of Prospect, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Billy Shannon, Eric Mitchell, Buddy Dugger, Thelton Colwell, Frank Woodford and David Batrum. Honorary pallbearers will be senior saints at Sweet Springs Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County.

Mamie L. Lee
96, homemaker

Funeral for Mamie L. Lee, 96, of Decatur will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Parkview Baptist Church with the Rev. Todd Evan and the Rev. J. Wayne Penn officiating, and Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lee died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Sept. 9, 1904, in Alabama to George W. Portwood and Martha Allie Brown Portwood. A lifelong member of Parkview Baptist Church, she was the first president of the Women's Missionary Union and served the Morgan County Baptist Association through WMU and Sunday school. She was the widow of David F. Lee and the mother of Frank Lee, Tommy Lee and Glynn Lee.

Survivors include one daughter, Edna L. Carter of Decatur; three brothers, John Portwood of Columbus, Ga., and Joseph Portwood and Franklin Portwood, both of Decatur; three half-sisters, Peggy Kizziah of Lompoc, Calif., Frances Brown of Nashville and Lena DeGraffenried of Decatur; and 16 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Hal Cochran, Willis Hudson, Richard Bays, David E. Story, Alex Story and Brad Lawrence.

Hershell M. Mears

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Hershell M. Mears, 56, of Hartselle will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Faith Independent Church near Falkville with the Rev. Robert Demsey and the Rev. Anthony Vinson officiating.

Burial will be in Bell Springs Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at 304 Sunset Street S.W. in Hartselle until the funeral.

Mr. Mears died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Athens. He was born June 18, 1944, in Lawrence County to William C. Mears and Earlene Coan Mears. He was a member of Holiness Church of God.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Castaineda and Sarah Mears, both of Falkville; four brothers, Charles Mears, Ralph Mears and Alvie Mears, all of Russellville, and James Mears of Falkville; two sisters, Lee Cooke of Hartselle and Francis Leeth of Danville; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Robbie Duke, Chuckie Mears, Eric Mears, Joseph Mears, Gene Tidwell and Tim West.

Ida Julia Samson
66, homemaker

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Ida Julia Samson, 66, of Zanesville, Ohio, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Williams-McCracken Funeral Home with the Rev. Howell Eddy and the Rev. Martin DePreast officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery at Vinemont. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until the funeral.

Mrs. Samson died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at her home. She was born Jan. 19, 1935, at Lacon to Buel "Doc" Johnson and Mable Wood Johnson. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Ben Samson; three sons, Darren Tolbert of Zanesville, Ohio, and Lonell Kent and Harold Kent, both of Alabama; two brothers, Cecil Johnson of Irving, Texas, and Charles E. Johnson of Valhermoso Springs; two sisters, Dorothy Hudgins and Dianne Johnson, both of Hartselle; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Derek Watts, Rodney Johnson, David Johnson, Gary Johnson, Joe Webb and Charlie Freemon.

Annie Laura Tapscott Surles
72, homemaker

Funeral for Annie Laura Tapscott Surles, 72, of Decatur will be Saturday at noon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward Owens officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Memorial Gardens with Sharpley Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Surles died Monday, March 26, 2001, at her home. She was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Morgan County to Elmer Tapscott and Wilma Jackson Tapscott. She graduated from Decatur Negro High School and was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Golden Age Sunday School and Christian Fellowship classes, and the Missionary Society. She was a former member of the Inspirational Choir and Willing Workers Club. She taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. A homemaker, she was the widow of Samuel P. Surles.

Survivors include four daughters, Dr. Sarah Broadnax of Chattanooga and Patricia Watkins, Derenda Tapscott Lucas and Amanda Surles Menifield, all of Decatur; one brother, James Tapscott of Decatur; three sisters, Bertha Nell Townsend of Las Vegas, Eloise Birdsong of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Betty Jean Conley of Chattanooga; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be James Birgans, Larry Jones, David Chairs, Frank Matthews, Curtis Fletcher, Curtis Miller, Lavon Hampton and Leonard Raybon.

Billy Joe Taylor
56, retired security job

TRINITY -- Funeral for Billy Joe "Rabbit Man" Taylor, 56, of Moulton will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Reeves and the Rev. Sandra Locke-Godbey officiating.

Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Taylor died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at his home. He was born Dec. 24, 1944, in Morgan County, to Clayton Taylor and Vivian Reeves Taylor. He was retired from Vinson Security Co. as a security guard and was formerly a manager at Somerville Auto Parts for 2 ½ years. Mr. Taylor was a truck dispatcher for 25 years in Indiana, and also worked for Sweet Sue Co.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Taylor; three brothers, Bobby Taylor of LaPorte, Ind., Boyd Taylor of Portage, Ind. and Bruce Taylor of Lake Station, Ind.; two sisters, Brenda Coates of Portage, Ind., and Becky Woodard of Hobart, Ind.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Taylor, Bruce Taylor and Boyd Taylor.

Willie Mae Thomas
82, secretary

Funeral for Willie Mae Thomas, 82, of Decatur will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Teal officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thomas died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Texline, Texas, to Willie Calvin Greer and Blanche Mae Mitchell Greer. She was a secretary.

Survivors include one son, Mark D. Thomas of Decatur; one daughter, Mrs. Darrell Haley of Hartselle; one sister, Hazel Dudley of Anson, Texas; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steven Smith, Don Hunkeapillar, Wayne Cobb, Dan York, Jay Jones and Don Weems.

Marie L. Cork
Homemaker

Funeral for Marie L. Cork of Decatur will be today at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Richmond Webster officiating.

Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery Mausoleum with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Cork died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at her home. She was born in Michigan to Herman Linderman and Alice Foster Linderman. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Robert N. Cork; one son, William Cork of Denver, N.C.; one daughter, Marilee Doepel of Decatur; one sister, Bernice Simonson of Muskegon, Mich.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Richard Leonard, Soney Jones, Art Jordan, Leo Rowe, John Landers, John Harris and Tom White.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church or Hospice of the Valley.

Eveleen Smith Crawford
85, beautician

Funeral for Eveleen Smith Crawford, 85, of Decatur will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Dunivant officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Crawford died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Decatur to Sydney A. Smith and Bessie Young Smith. She was the former owner and operator of Smith's Beauty Salon and a member of First United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Thomas D. Crawford and the sister of the late Marguerite Walker, Mary Belle Martin, Lucille Smith, Robert E. Smith and Alonzo P. Smith.

Survivors include one sister, Lillian Smith of Decatur.

Pallbearers will be Tom White, Flip Timberlake, Mike Flynn, James Rowden, Harold Smith, Calvin Brown and Paul Hargrove.

Alberta 'Birdie' Brown
67, homemaker

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio - Funeral for Alberta "Birdie" Brown, 67, of St. Clairsville was Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling, W.Va.

Mrs. Brown died Sunday, March 25, 2001.

Survivors include her husband, Tommy Brown, formerly of Falkville; one son, Jeff Sebatino of St. Clairsville; two sisters, Mary Ann Jones of Columbus, Ohio; and Elizabeth Abentino of New York City; and two grandchildren.

Joseph Millard Cagle
83, former owner of Cagle Welding Service

Funeral for Joseph Millard Cagle, 83, of Decatur will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Beltline Church of Christ with Mike Nix and Todd Cagle officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Cagle died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Franklin County to M. Luke Cagle and Minnie Smith Cagle. He was a World War II Army veteran and the former owner of Cagle Welding Service.

Survivors include his wife, Lenese Malone Cagle; two sons, Paul Cagle and Jeff Cagle, both of Decatur; one daughter, Jo Bates of Decatur; two brothers, L.E. "Buddy" Cagle and Grier Cagle, both of Decatur; two sisters, Jewel Sharp of Decatur and Rachel Parker of Wilmington, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Elders of Beltline Church of Christ will be honorary pallbearers.

Annie Malinda Lanier
91, homemaker

Funeral for Annie Malinda Lanier, 91, of Monteagle, Tenn., formerly of Decatur, will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Wiley Kitchens officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lanier died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Monteagle. She was born July 5, 1909, in Morgan County to John W. Holliday and Thedocia Livley Holliday. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of Sidney Allen Lanier and the mother of the late James Allen "Pete" Lanier.

Survivors include one grandson, Grant Lanier of Madison.

Nephews will be pallbearers.
