Howard Murphy Holmes
92, retired farmer

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Howard Murphy Holmes, 92, of Eva will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church with the Rev. Cleo Bentley officiating and Moss Service Funeral Home directing. The body will be in the church one hour before the service.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Holmes died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1908, in Morgan County to L.B. and Julie Ray Holmes. He was a retired farmer. He was the widower of Vera Holmes.

Survivors include one son, Weandell Holmes of Eva; two daughters, Wanda Lee Alexander of Eva and Leavell Wilkinson of Cullman; two brothers, Looney Holmes of Eva and Bertis Holmes of Cullman; one sister, Lorene Brown of Eva; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Dolores Smith Horton
79, retired laboratory technician

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Dolores Smith Horton, 79, of Decatur will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rock Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Legg and the Rev. Wayne Penn officiating.

Burial will be in the adjourning cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home and the body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mrs. Horton died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at her home. She was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Morgan County to Virgil E. Smith and Leona Lewis Smith. She was a charter member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Decatur. She was a retired Monsanto laboratory technician. She was the mother of the late Galon Horton.

Survivors include three brothers, Irmel L. Smith, Bourgeois Smith and Goin K. Smith, all of Eva; two sisters, Loris Puckett of Huntsville and Floris Dunaway of Somerville; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Burgess Smith, Wayne Bennett, Josh Smith, Scott Oden, Brandon Smith and Kevin Murphy.

Byron Kenesaw O'Bear
89, retired teacher and psychologist

Memorial service for Byron Kenesaw O'Bear, 89, of Decatur will be held at a future date with Shelton Funeral Home directing.

Mr. O'Bear died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born June 19, 1911, in Indiana to Albert D. O'Bear and Carrie E. Timberman O'Bear. After receiving a teacher's certificate from Purdue University, he taught elementary school for three years and then received a master's degree in psychology from Ohio State University. He counseled veterans of World War II and mentally retarded children. He was the widower of Elizabeth O'Bear and Mildred O'Bear.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Karen Solomon.

Venus Terry
76, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Venus Terry, 76, of Moulton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Becker officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Terry died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at National Health Care in Moulton. She was born April 25, 1925, in Lawrence County, to George Letson and Lizzie Letson. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Willard Terry; one son, Gaylen Terry of Texas; one daughter, Phyllis Taylor of Moulton; one brother, Talmadge Letson of Moulton; one sister, Helen Letson of Moulton; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Taylor, Derek Taylor, Dewayne Terry, Brian Terry, Alan Livingston and Y.Z. Harville.

Dorothy Jane Thompson
76, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Dorothy Jane Thompson, 76, of Decatur will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Hal Daige officiating.

Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thompson died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at her home. She was born July 4, 1924, in Tennessee to Harvey Vowell and Tessie Mary Elizabeth Hardin Vowell. She was a member of First Independent Methodist Church in Flint. She was a homemaker and the widow of John L. Thompson.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Thompson of Trinity, Michael Thompson of Decatur and Eric Thompson of Athens; one stepson, John S. Thompson of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Joe Vowell of Nashville and Bobby Vowell of South Fulton, Tenn.; two sisters, Marjorie Loyd of Sacramento, Calif., and Boots Smith of Kansas; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ron Buchanan, Olin Craven, J.R. Thompson, Robbie Thompson, Matthew Thompson and Michael Todd Thompson.

Shirley E. Dalton
83, small-engine repairman

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Shirley E. Dalton, 83, of Lacey's Spring will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Al Phillips officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 2 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Dalton died at home Thursday, May 31, 2001. He was born March 1, 1918, in Jackson County. He was a World War II Army veteran and a self-employed, small-engine repairman. He was the son of Alexander and Mary Belle Ledbetter Dalton.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Hunter Dalton; two daughters, Sharon Sircy and Debbie Pounders, both of Hartselle; two sisters, Clara Bea Fryer and Estelle Kilgore, both of Huntsville; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mike Dalton, Scott Barney Dalton, Frank Edwards, Herbert Fields, Van Hough and Dan Lenox.

Jewell Cooper Ellison
88, retired nurse

Memorial service for Jewell Cooper Ellison, 88, of Simpsonville, S.C., will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Jones officiating.

Burial will be at noon at Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the memorial service.

Mrs. Ellison died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in Simpsonville.

She was born June 22, 1912, in Shelby County to Miles J. Cooper and Lucy Ann Nivens Cooper. She was a retired nurse.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Ellison of Simpsonville; one daughter, Sandra Thompson of Whittier, Calif.; one sister Beulah Thomason of Mobile; and five grandchildren.

Baby McGreger
Infant

Funeral for the infant McGreger, child of Boyd and Carrie McGreger of Athens, will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at East Lawrence Memorial Gardens with Shelton Funeral Home directing.

The infant died Thursday, May 31, 2001, the day of his birth, at Decatur General Hospital.

Survivors include the parents; one brother, Dillon McGreger of Athens; grandparents, Kenneth and Lillian Pace of Decatur; Bill and Marcia McGreger of Rogersville, Carl Thomas Ledford of Huntsville; great-grandparents, Theodore Goble of Boaz and Esther Ledford of Grant, Mildred Saffell of Huntsville and Betty Dean Pace of Hartselle.

John Edwin Baucom
85, retired farmer
ATHENS -- Funeral for John Edwin Baucom, 85, of Athens will be today at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Baucom died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born June 19, 1915, in Limestone County to Jack Baucom and Susie Baucom. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include three sons, Charles E. Baucom, Wayne Baucom and James C. Baucom, all of Athens; one brother, Henry C. Baucom of Athens; one sister, Cora Belle Williams of Athens; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Byron Baucom, Derek Baucom, Jimmy Baucom, Marty Baucom, Cortny Barksdale and Stanley Britton.

Dalton Cosby
66, Athens resident

Funeral for Dalton Cosby, 66, of Athens will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Damon Betts officiating.

Burial will be in Thatch-Mann Cemetery with Peoples Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Cosby died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born Feb. 9, 1935, in Limestone County to Vernon Cosby and Tillie Nelson Cosby.

Survivors include two brothers, Herbert Cosby and Linzy Cosby, both of Huntsville, and two sisters, Nettie Lee Jefferson and Octavia Stewart, both of Athens.

William Harold 'Dan' Daniel
66, cattle farmer

Funeral for William Harold "Dan" Daniel, 66, of Trinity will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Phillips officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Daniel died at home Friday, June 1, 2001. He was born June 7, 1934, in Morgan County to Ambros Daniel and Mary Norwood Daniel. He was a Baptist. He served in the Army for eight years and retired from the Alabama Army National Guard, where he served with the 142nd Signal Brigade. He was a disabled veteran. He was a cattle farmer and retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority and was a member of Laborer's International Union of North America Local 366. He was the brother of Charles Howard Daniel and Willow Dean Eubanks.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Daniel; two daughters, Angela Daniel Teichmiller of Hartselle and Leigh Ann Gillespie of Trinity; one sister, Dorothy Daniel of Decatur; and three grandchildren.

Members of the Decatur National Guard unit will be pallbearers.

Joe Alan Daws
43, Daws Cleaning Service employee

ATHENS -- Funeral for Joe Alan Daws, 43, of Athens will be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Dusty McLemore officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Daws died Friday, June 1, 2001, at University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham. He was born Dec. 15, 1957. He was a Baptist and worked for Daws Cleaning Service. He was engaged to Belinda Ruf.

Survivors include his two sons, Jacob Daws of Athens and Daniel Daws of Maryville, Tenn.; one daughter, Jessica Daws of Waynesville, Mo.; his parents, D.W. and Maxine Daws of Athens; two brothers, Phillip Daws and Kevin Daws, both of Athens; one sister, Karen Billions of Athens; and his grandmother, Ruth Tunstill of Athens.

Pallbearers will be Robert Harvey, Howard Harvey, Sonny Harvey, Harold Harvey, Leon Hill and Carmen Griffin.

Orlan Burnett
HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Orlan Burnett, 74, of Moulton will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Burnett died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

The funeral home will announce complete arrangements.
