ATHENS -- Funeral for Dorothy Lee Johnson, 83, of Athens will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Jackson officiating.

Burial will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born May 3, 1918, in Omaha, Neb., to Earl D. Lee and Isabelle Lee. She was a homemaker, a volunteer for the Department of Human Resources and a member of Athens Church of God, where she was active in missions.

Survivors include her husband, E. Stuart Johnson; five sons, Dennis S. Johnson of Athens, Jim Johnson of Elkmont, Stephen A. Johnson of Burleson, Texas, Jay E. Johnson of Chanhassen, Minn., and D. Scott Johnson of Kearney, Neb.; one daughter, Pat Kersten of Northville, Mich.; one brother, Earl D. Lee of Omaha; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Athens Church of God.

Travis Looney
79, auto repairman

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Travis Looney, 79, of Falkville will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Ledlow officiating.

Burial will be in Falkville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Looney died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. He was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Morgan County to Floide Looney and Edna Ledlow Looney. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a self-employed automobile repairman. He was the father of the late Ricky Looney.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Looney; one daughter, Valerie Powell of Hartselle; five sisters, Odie Lee Poole of Hartselle, Martha Turrentine of Vinemont, Lorene Holaday and Margie Button, both of Danville, and Athlea Dover of Lavergne, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Powell, Harold Dover, Tim Looney, Willard Asherbranner, Dale Mason and Donnie Turrentine.

Anne Gentle Lovell
62, homemaker

SCOTTSBORO -- Funeral for Anne Gentle Lovell, 62, of Hartselle, formerly of Scottsboro, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Scottsboro Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Cooper, officiating.

Burial will be in Pinehaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lovell died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born April 7, 1939, in Alabama to Cecil Ben Gentle and Mary Rebecca Chambless Gentle. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Denny Lovell; one son, Tommy Lovell of Hartselle; one daughter, Leigh Anne Lovell of Hartselle; two brothers, William Gentle of Huntsville and Dean Gentle of Scottsboro; and two grandchildren.

Nellie M. Poole
82, Birmingham resident

HOMEWOOD -- Graveside service for Nellie M. Poole, 82, of Birmingham will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Decatur City Cemetery with Ridout's Valley Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Miss Poole died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Kindred Health Care in Birmingham. She was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Decatur to Samuel Austin Poole and Elizabeth Sharpe Poole.

Survivors include one niece, Tina Lee Burleson of Vestavia; two great-nephews; and one great-niece.

Ruben V. Tarin
78, retired circus clown

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Ruben V. Tarin, 78, of Huntsville, formerly of Limestone County, was to be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Cemetery with Harry Fuller officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Tarin died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born June 15, 1922, in Arizona. He was retired as BoBo the Clown. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Mayfair Church of Christ in Huntsville. He was the father of the late Ruben Tarin Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Kelly Tarin of Phoenix and Jay Tarin of Huntsville; two daughters, Robyn Walls of Charlotte, N.C., and Daphne Ohlson of Huntsville; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mayfair Church of Christ's Belize mission.

Rosie Lee Gipson
36, former Wayne Farms employee
Funeral for Rosie Lee Gipson, 36, of Decatur was to be today at noon at St. James Cumberland Presbyterian Church of America with the Rev. Doris Baker officiating.

Burial was to be in Lindsey Cemetery in Oakville with Sharpley Funeral Home directing. The body was to be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Gipson died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Limestone County. She was born Jan. 19, 1965, to Hance Griffin Jr. and Ethel Mae Barnes Gipson. She attended Lawrence County schools, was a member of Oakville Missionary Baptist Church and had worked at Wayne Farms. She was the mother of the late Clifford Sheppard Jr.

Survivors include one son, Jarvious Sheppard of Decatur; her mother of Decatur; her father of Alexander City; five brothers, Willard Hawkins and Tony Gipson, both of Huntsville, and John Hawkins, Tracey Gipson and Ray Gipson, all of Decatur; six sisters, Della Gipson and Sandra Gipson, both of Huntsville, and Ella Gipson, Joann Griffin, Brenda Griffin and Alice Griffin, all of Decatur; and her grandmother, Martha Hawkins of Decatur.

Pauline Brewer Hine
86, homemaker

LORETTO, Tenn. -- Funeral for Pauline Brewer Hine, 86, of Green hill will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Loretto Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Craig Carlisle officiating.

Burial will be in Stutts Cemetery in Green hill. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hine died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at El Repose Nursing Home in Green hill. She was born April 8, 1915, in Wayne County, Tenn., to Noah Brewer and Sally Blackwell Brewer. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Green hill. She was the widow of Homer Hine and sister of the late Ed Brewer and Tommie Lee Brewer.

Survivors include one son, Franklin Hine of Florence; one daughter, Betty Fowler of Decatur; two brothers, Johnnie Brewer and James Brewer, both of Green hill; two sisters, Georgia Mae Butler and Maggie Redford, both of Green hill; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Travis Looney

Mrs. Parker died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation. She was born Sept. 1, 1907, in Lawrence County to Charles Gilbert Stockton and Amanda Catherine Montgomery Stockton. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, a homemaker and the widow of Arthur Parker.

Survivors include one son, Rayburn Parker of Cartersville, Ga.; one daughter, Helen Parker Gandy of Decatur; one sister, Catherine McMillan of Decatur; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Parker, Arthur Parker, Tim Gandy, Darrell Webb, Clayton Parker and Darryl McMillan.

Jackson Coleman Price
76, retired military

DAPHNE -- Funeral for Jackson Coleman Price , 76, of Mobile, formerly of Morgan County, was Thursday at Bayview Funeral Home.

Burial was in Belforest Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Price died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Mobile. He was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Athens. He was a life member of the VFW. He was retired from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, and was formerly employed with the Department of Defense.

Survivors include: his wife, Peggy J. Price ; one son, Larry C. Price of Mobile; one brother, Edward Price of Addison; one sister, Madgie Washburn of Decatur; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

H. Wilson Smith Jr.
49, biomedical engineer

Funeral for H. Wilson Smith, 49, of Winter Haven, Fla., will be June 18 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Decatur. A memorial service will be Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements..

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Winter Haven. He was born Feb. 15, 1952, in Decatur to Harold Wilson Smith Sr. and Martha Haynie Smith. He was a graduate of Decatur High School. He attended Auburn University, Athens State University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received a master of science degree in biomedical engineering from UAB and was engaged in research projects in the university's doctoral program.

He worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Protein Crystallography Department. He was a biomedical engineer on the first protein crystallography project aboard the Discovery space shuttle in 1988. In recent years, Mr. Smith lived in Winter Haven. He was a lifelong member of Decatur First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Paulene Tsou Smith; his father of Decatur; and two sisters, Marcia Smith Strang of Winter Haven, and Amy Smith Griffin of Tuscaloosa.

Pamela Jean Hungerford Zafuta
47, former Boeing accountant

CLEARWATER, Kan. -- Funeral for Pamela Jean Hungerford Zafuta, 47, of Derby, Kan., formerly of Hartselle, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Haysville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Will Glaser officiating.

Burial will be in Stevens Cemetery in rural Bronaugh, Mo., with the Rev. Verl Strong presiding and Webb Mortuary directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the church.

Mrs. Zafuta died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita, Kan. She was born April 20, 1954, in Wichita to Erroll M. Hungerford and Billie Sell Hungerford. She was a 1972 graduate of Campus High School in Haysville and served in the Navy. She worked as a grain accountant at Cargill Inc., in Wichita and accepted an accounting position with Boeing Co. in Huntsville after her husband's transfer there. In 1994, the family moved to League City, Texas, where she worked as an accountant for the League City Water Department.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Zafuta; one daughter, Erin Zafuta of Derby; three stepsons, Michael Zafuta of Pittsburg, Kan., and Karl Zafuta and John Zafuta, both of Frontenac, Kan.; two step-daughters, Rhonda McFarland of Overland Park, Kan., and Karen Johnson of Kearney, Mo.; one brother, Charles Hungerford of Bladenboro, N.C.; two sisters, Karen Johnston of Birmingham and Susan Mason of Haysville; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Kansas-area office of the American Diabetes Association.

Lois Oppalene Norman
79, homemaker

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Lois Oppalene Norman, 79, of Cullman will be today at 2 p.m. at Williams-McCracken Funeral Home with the Rev. Dewey Briscoe officiating.

Burial will be in Simcoe Methodist Cemetery.

Mrs. Norman died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at her home. She was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Cullman County to Huey Hunter and Minnie Ponder Hunter. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Clark W. Norman; four sons, Jim Norman and Edward Norman, both of Cullman, Clark W. Norman Jr. of Decatur and Dennis McClure of Hanceville; three daughters, Oppalene Standefer of South Roxana, Ill., Reba Norment of Ledbetter, Ky., and Linda Ridgeway of Cullman; one brother, Hershell Hunter of Cullman; three sisters, Ester Cruse of San Jose, Calif., Bonnie Buck of Lade Wells, Fla., and Gerry Kidder of Kissimmee, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
