Fred 'Moon' Kellam
72, Morgan County maintenance

Funeral for Fred "Moon" Kellam, 72, of Decatur will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Priceville Funeral Home with Tommy Smothers officiating.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Pulaski, Tenn. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Kellam died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at his home. He was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Tennessee to Robert Simpson Kellam and Velma Hastings Kellam. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a retired Morgan County Courthouse maintenance worker.

Survivors include one son, Steve Kellam of Decatur; one daughter, Linda Wilbanks of Decatur; one brother, David Kellam of Clarkston, Mich.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Keith Livingston, Marty Dyer, Wayne Lindley, Curtis Slaten, Sonny Rogers and Bobby Dotson.

Memorials may be made to AlaCare and Hospice of Morgan County.

Jossie Pearl McDonald

Graveside service for Jossie Pearl McDonald, 62, of Decatur will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Sterrs Cemetery with the Rev. Theodore Bumpus officiating and Reynolds Funeral Home directing.

Miss McDonald died Sunday, June 10, 2001, in DCH Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. She was born Jan. 6, 1939, in Morgan County to Tom McDonald and Nellie Spence McDonald.

Survivors include one brother, Thomas E. McDonald of Collinsville; and one sister, Nellie Fitzpatrick of Decatur.

Melvin Harold Segars
56, truck driver

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Melvin Harold Segars, 56, of Hartselle, will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Milligan officiating.

Burial will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Segars died today, June 14, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born March 15, 1945, in Morgan County to Melvin Grady Segars and Gertrude Tyler Segars. He was a truck driver for Emerson Transportation. He was a member of Son Rise Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Marie Segars; one son, Tim Segars of Hartselle; two daughters, Gina Campbell and Lori Coffey, both of Hartselle; two stepsons, Mark Sapp of Danville and Tony Sapp of Hartselle; one stepdaughter, Lisa Briscoe of Falkville; one brother, Joel Segars of Hartselle; one sister, Shelby Cole of Hartselle; and 11 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Hill, John Long, Donnie Gilbert, Mike Segars, Alan Wiley and Dennis Tyler.

Reuben C. Smith
84, farmer, Goodyear retiree

MOULTON -- Funeral for Reuben C. Smith, 84, of Moulton will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Prince, the Rev. Dillion Calvert and the Rev. Keith Jones officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair in Birmingham. He was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Blount County to the Rev. Lewis E. Smith and Jennie Epperson Smith. He was an avid hunter and sports fan, having played basketball on the independent team of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., for which he began working in the 1930s. He also played independent baseball and coached youth league. He was a member of Flat Creek Missionary Baptist Church and was a deacon for 40 years. He retired from Goodyear in 1976 and was a farmer. He was the brother of the late Gladys Dyar of Courtland, the late Gildred Smith of Montgomery, and the stepson of the late Dora Odell Smith of Moulton.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Kylie Letson Smith; two sons, Ron Smith of Auburn and Don Smith of Moulton; two daughters, Carolyn Claborn and Beverly Bentley, both of Moulton; one brother, R.B. Smith of Moulton; one sister, Reba Delashaw of Montgomery; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Byars, Randy Letson, Billy Allen, Scotty Letson, Kim Hensley, Avery Bealle, and Forest Smith.

Harry Howard Wakefield
84, retired steelworker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Harry Howard Wakefield, 84, of Tanner will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Wakefield died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Athens. He was a retired steelworker and a Baptist.

Survivors include one son, Ron Wakefield of Tanner; one daughter, Ann Swindle of Birmingham; one sister, Selma Wakefield of Huntsville; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Madison Brooke Phillips
Infant

Graveside service for infant Madison Brooke Phillips will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at East Lawrence Memorial Gardens with the Rev. David Phillips officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing.

Madison died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, the day of her birth, at Decatur General Hospital.

She is survived by her parents, Marcus and Marcy Phillips of Trinity; her grandparents, the Rev. David and Angelika Phillips of Trinity, and Marlow and Johanna Terry and Reva and Kenny Ray, all of Moulton; and her great-grandfather, Eric Lehmann of Berlin, Germany.

Willie 'Papa' Frank Ray

TANNER -- Funeral for Willie "Papa" Frank Ray of Athens will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home with the Rev. Bakari J. Brown officiating.

Burial will be in Warren Cemetery in Town Creek. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Ray died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. He was employed by Southern Cotton Oil Mill and 3M.

Survivors include one son, James Ray of Athens; one daughter, Susie N. Lee of Knoxville; and five grandchildren.

Melvin Harold Segars

H. Wilson Smith Jr.
49, biomedical engineering

Funeral for H. Wilson Smith Jr., 49, of Winter Haven, Fla., will be Monday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Decatur with the Rev. Charles Boling officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church parlor.

A memorial service was May 11 at First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Winter Haven. He was born Feb. 15, 1952, in Decatur to Harold Wilson Smith Sr. and Martha Haynie Smith. He graduated from Decatur High School. He attended Auburn University, Athens State University and The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He earned a master's degree in biomedical engineering from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was engaged in research projects in the university's doctoral program.

He worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Protein Crystallography Department. He was a biomedical engineer on the first protein crystalography project aboard Discovery space shuttle in 1988. In recent years, Mr. Smith lived in Winter Haven. He was a lifelong member of Decatur First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Paulene Tsou Smith; his father of Decatur; two sisters, Marcia Smith Strang of Winter Haven and Amy Smith Griffin of Tuscaloosa.

Pallbearers will be Rex Rankin Jr, Bill Thomson, Charles Ashwater, Pat Crow, Bob McLaughlin, Philip Whatley, Short Strange and Brent Peebles.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Decatur.

Ruth Horton Stoffregen
78, homemaker

Memorial service for Ruth Marion Horton Stoffregen, 78, of Decatur will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brad Walker officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service Saturday in the church parlor.

Mrs. Stoffregen died Monday, June 11, 2001, in Hoover. She was born Feb. 18, 1923, in Georgia to Beecher Ward Horton and Ruth Marion Selman Horton. She was the widow of Edward S. Stoffregen Sr. She had lived in Decatur since 1958 and was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one son, Edward S. Stoffregen Jr. of Birmingham; one brother, Ward P. "Bud" Horton of Chamblee, Ga.; one sister, Betty Ann Griffin of Cedartown, Ga.; one grandson; and three great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to Unity Hospice, 2145 Highland Ave., Suite 110, Birmingham AL 35205.

Marjorie McAllister Swanner
77, Alabama Archives and History employee

ATHENS -- Funeral for Marjorie McAllister Swanner, 77, of Montgomery and formerly of Athens, will be Sunday at 11 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Swanner died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Long Term Care Hospital in Jackson. She was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Limestone County to Terrell H. McAllister and Minnie Pearl Morris McAllister. She was employed by the state of Alabama Archives and History. She was a Baptist. She was the widow of C.E. Swanner and the mother of the late Jill Faye Swanner, Judy Gayle Albright, Jerry Wayne Swanner and Ronald "Ronnie" Allen Swanner. She was the grandmother of the late Stacy Sabrina Swain and Lonnie Charles Albright.

Survivors include her daughter, Susie Swain of Montgomery; her brother, Doc McAllister of Pulaski, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Ross M. Thomas
61, day care owner, retired principal

HUNTSVILLE -- Funeral for Ross M. Thomas, 61, of Toney will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Talmadge Clayton officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Memorial Gardens in Meridianville. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Thomas died Wednesday, June 13, 2001. He was born March 6, 1940, to Almer Thomas and Neomia Thomas. A native of Morgan County, he received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Alabama and an associate of arts degree from Alabama A&M. He taught and coached at New Hope High School and served as principal at Madison Cross Roads for 12 years and Bob Jones High School for two years. He worked at the Madison County Schools central office prior to his retirement. He owned and operated Madison Cross Roads Child Development Center. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy E. Thomas; one son, Mike Thomas of Huntsville; three daughters, Ellen Holliday of Decatur, Susan Austin of Woodstock, Ga., and Lisa Thomas of Huntsville; his mother of Priceville; one brother, Harold Thomas of Pensacola, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

James Earl Couey
72, retired teacher
NEW HOPE -- Funeral for James Earl Couey, 72, of New Hope will be today at 1 p.m. at New Hope Funeral Home with the Rev. Anthony Barnes officiating.

Burial will be in Hayden Cemetery.

Mr. Couey died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Willington Place Assisted Living in Huntsville. He was born June 7, 1929, in Hartselle to Robert and Mollie Couey. He was a teacher and retired from Madison County Schools. He was the widower of Vivian Couey.

He is survived by one sister, Elree Couey Culps of Athens.
