Funeral for Mattie Box Peebles, 84, of Decatur will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Waymon Fike officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peebles died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born May 23, 1917, in Blount County to Miles "Pink" Box and Mary Frances Randolph Box. She was the widow of Elmer Peebles and a member of Unity Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include four sons, Delmer Peebles of Cullman, Ussery Peebles of Decatur, Berry Peebles of Bridgeport and PelmerPeebles of Priceville; four daughters, Vernos Grisham, Mary Vest and John Theusch, all of Decatur, and Yvonne Millwood of Cullman; one sister, Lillie Letson of Muscle Shoals; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mike Vest, Ashley Peebles, Shane Vest, Waylon Cagle, David Peebles, Delmer Lewis Peebles, Todd Cagle and Anthony Peebles.

Gregory Lynn Stelzer
41, Movie Gallery manager

MONTGOMERY -- Funeral for Gregory Lynn Stelzer, 41, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Leak-Memory Chapel with the Rev. Joel Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Hayneville Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Stelzer died Friday, June 15, 2001, at his home. He was born in Sleepy Eye, Minn., to Vincent Stelzer and Shirley Smith Stelzer. He was manager of the Movie Gallery in Decatur.

Survivors include his father of Phoenix, Ariz., and his mother of Montgomery; three half-brothers, Mark Stelzer of Phoenix, Ariz., and John Stelzer and Jeffrey Stelzer, both of Houston.

Pallbearers will be Wade Wynn, William Marlette, Brent Boggess, Roger Boggess, Brandon Byrd and Buck Williams.

Israel Valdez Vera
15, construction worker

Graveside service for Israel Valdez Vera, 15, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 9 to 11 at Roselawn Funeral Home.

Mr. Valdez died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Irondale. He was born Nov. 7, 1985, in Mexico, to Mareo Valdez and Teresa Vera de Valdez. He was a construction worker and recently completed the 10th grade at Decatur High School. He was the grandson of the late Leonardo Valdez and Rosario Gadea de Valdez of Mexico.

He is survived by his parents of Decatur; one brother, Jonathan Valdez Vera of Decatur; one sister, Columba Valdez Vera of Decatur; and his grandparents, JoaQuin Vera of Decatur and Socorro Vera of Jalisco, Mexico.

Co-workers will be pallbearers.

Agnes Green Watkins
80, retired license examiner

MOULTON -- Funeral for Agnes Green Watkins, 80, of Vicksburg, Miss., will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Landersville Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Mrs. Watkins died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Belmont Place Retirement Home for Women in Vicksburg, Miss. She was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Dekalb County to Robert H. Green and Elizabeth Benefield Green . She was retired from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles after serving for 25 years as a drivers license examiner in Richmond, and was a longtime resident of the Richmond area before moving to Vicksburg in November. Mrs. Watkins was the widow of Charley Buford Watkins Sr., and the mother of the late James Robert Watkins. She was a member of Enon Methodist Church in Studley, Va.

Survivors include two sons, Charles B. Watkins Jr. of Vicksburg, Miss., and Michael Irwin Watkins of Highland Springs, Va.; three brothers, Roy H. Green of Fort Payne, Arthur Green of Huntsville and Thomas H. Green of Chattanooga; two sisters, Vera Green McNutt and Velma Farmer, both of Fort Payne; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Enon Methodist Church in Studley, Va.

Lena Mae Belue
88, Rogersville Manufacturing retiree
ATHENS -- Funeral for Lena Mae Belue, 88, of Rogersville was to be today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Anderson with Tom Howe officiating.

Burial was to be in Mitchell Cemetery with Spry Funeral Home directing. The body will be in the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Belue died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. She was born Feb. 11, 1913, in Lauderdale County. She was retired from Rogersville Manufacturing and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anderson.

Survivors include five sons, Dearl Belue of Rogersville, Gary Belue of Madison, Lannie Belue of Muscle Shoals, and Aaron Belue and Sherall Belue, both of Athens; three daughters, Carolyn Thornton of Rogersville, and Regina Weist and Donna Dunn, both of Athens; one brother, Franklin Patterson of Anderson; three sisters, Leathel Griffin of Anderson, and Vona Cates and Mildred Corum, both of Rogersville; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be Reynolds Thornton, Greg Belue, Tim Belue, Russell Belue, Dustin Belue and Greg Lovell.

Mavis Blair

Graveside service for Mavis Blair, 75, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Simons officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing,

Mrs. Blair died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 30, 1925.

Ruby L. Burgans
83, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Ruby L. Burgans, 83, of Falkville was to be today at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Fowler and the Rev. Rickey McAbee officiating.

Burial was to be in Corinth Cemetery in Cullman County.

Mrs. Burgans died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her daughter's home in Trinity. She was born May 10, 1918, in Covington County to Leonard Kervin and Ada Mathies Kervin. She was a member of Bell Springs Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Purser of Joppa, Helen McGoldrick of Hartselle, Kathy Bryant of Trinity and Barbara Speegle of Falkville; one brother, Raymond Kervin of Mobile; three sisters, Audrey Brooks of Grand Bay, Opal Stodges of McKenzie and Dorothy Jean Beasley of Florence, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

J.O. Looney
70, General Electric retiree

ATHENS -- Funeral for J.O. Looney, 70, of Athens, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Bobby Robinson officiating.

Burial will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Looney died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born July 27, 1930, in Limestone County, to Charley and Ethel Looney. He was a retired General Electric employee and a member of Sardis Springs Church of Christ. He was the brother of the late Alley Looney and the grandfather of the late Tracy Sides.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Floy Looney; one son, Dwight Looney of Athens; five daughters, Janie Bassham, Peggy Fitchie, Carol Furline, Dail Newton and Wanda Pepper, all of Athens; his mother of Athens; two brothers, Douglas Looney and James Luna, both of Athens; two sisters, Faye Leopard and Patricia Tucker, both of Athens; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Roy E. Perry, Tarry Dutton, Roger Beckham, Raymond Brown, James Bobo and Joe Sandlin.

Dorthay Pauline 'Polly' Maxwell

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Dorthay Pauline "Polly" Maxwell, 71, of Somerville will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Vandon Windsor officiating.

Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery in Morgan County. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Maxwell died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her home. She was born June 21, 1929, in Jackson County to Joe Sire Houser and Lela Ollie Owens Houser. She was a homemaker. She was the sister of the late J.T. Houser, Floyd Houser and Quentin Houser and grandmother of the late Jerry D. Lemmond.

Survivors include her husband, Morrell Ceigal Maxwell; two sons, Morrell Dwight Maxwell of Grantville, S.C., and William Conley Maxwell of Somerville; one daughter, Brenda Maxwell Estes of Somerville; four brothers, Erskin Doyle Houser, Calvin Varnell Houser and Lawrence Emory Houser, all of Somerville, and Jefferson Davis Houser of Guntersville; one sister, Yvonne Cook of Somerville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Nephews and grandsons will be pallbearers.

Jeanoma Bost O'Brien
82, dry cleaner retiree

SEBRING, Fla. -- Funeral for Jeanoma Bost O'Brien, 82, of Sebring was Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St. Catherine Catholic Church with Father Jose Ruiz officiating.

Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Avon Park with Morris Funeral Chapel directing.

Mrs. O'Brien died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Lake Placid Healthcare Center in Lake Placid, Fla. She was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Decatur to Charles Baxter Hart and Lula Edna Maples Hart. She moved to Sebring in 1957 from Gary, Ind. She retired from Feathers Dry Cleaners. She was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Craft and Rosary Makers Club.

Survivors include one son, Allen Clement O'Brien of Valpariso, Ind.; one daughter, Louise Tompkins of Lake Placid; one sister, Frieda Wooten of Russellville; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Reyer died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. She was born June 19, 1925, in Eva to Herbert Johnson and Lucy Self Johnson. She was a homemaker and the widow of Gottlieb Henry Reyer.

Survivors include two daughters, Wyma Jane Hamley and Dianne Mitchell, both of Ardmore; two brothers, Vernon Johnson of Flint and W.C. Johnson of Priceville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Gordon S. Ricks
87, retired program analyst

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Gordon S. Ricks, 87, of Athens will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Curtis Coleman officiating and McConnell Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Ricks died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Floyd E. "Tut" Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville. He was born Jan. 31, 1914, in Prentiss County, Miss., to Abner Morris Ricks and Ivy Guy Hardy Ricks. He retired from Marshall Space Flight Center in 1978 as a program analyst, and also retired from the U.S Army Reserve in 1968. He graduated from Wheeler High School in Wheeler, Miss., and received bachelor of art and master of art degrees from the University of Mississippi at Oxford. He was in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1946 and served in the South Pacific as an amphibious operations officer during World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star. Mr. Ricks taught in the Ripley, Miss., school system, he worked at the U.S Department of Commerce Census Bureau and worked at the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Athens.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn B. Ricks; one son, Edwin G. Ricks of Madison; one daughter, Lynda Ricks Smith of Athens; one brother, Alton Morris Ricks of Wesson, Miss; one sister, Aileen Ricks Hoover of Baldwyn, Miss.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 978, Athens, AL 35612.
