Nettie Carnell Newby

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Nettie Carnell Newby, 86, of Athens will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Fowlkes Cemetery with Tommy Rosenblum officiating and McConnell Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Newby died Friday, July 6, 2001, at her home. She was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Limestone County to John Thomas Harbin and Nettie Phenette Roland Harbin. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was the widow of Robert Edmond Newby, the mother of the late Tom Newby, Don Newby, Ricky Newby, Tootles Newby and Larry Newby, and the sister of four late brothers and three late sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Newby and Roger Newby, both of Huntsville; two daughters, Doris Ann Preston and Mollie Hartley, both of Athens; two sisters, Louise Rogers and Luerener Williams, both of Athens; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Franklin D. Portwood
69, Decatur Utilities supervisor

Funeral for Franklin D. Portwood, 69, of Decatur will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob McNabb and the Rev. Richard Chandler officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Portwood died Friday, July 6, 2001, at his home. He was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Franklin County to George W. Portwood and Hattie Farris Portwood. He retired from Decatur Utilities as supervisor of the water treatment plant. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna Cole of Elkmont; two brothers, Joseph N. Portwood of Decatur and John L. Portwood of Midland, Ga.; three sisters, Frances Brown of Nashville, Georgia Kizziah of Lompoc, Calif., and Lena deGraffenried of Decatur; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Lane, Earl Haygood, Dan Robinson and Bob Lowery.

Melvina Tapscott Robinson
84, homemaker

Funeral for Melvina Tapscott Robinson, 84, of Somerville will be Monday at noon at Ward's Chapel CME Church with the Rev. Anna Elliott officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Memorial Gardens with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Robinson died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Decatur. She was born Nov. 17, 1916, in Morgan County to Buford Jones and Theodis Tapscott. She was a member of Ward's Chapel Church in Somerville, where she was active as a stewardess, choir member, Sunday school teacher and prayer service leader. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cleopatra Chapter of Huntsville, and was a homemaker and a foster parent.

Survivors include her husband, William B. Robinson.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Strain, Sonny Jackson, Billy Joe Pitts, Curtis Robinson, Arthur Strain and Antonio Cowley.

Alton Crutcher Thompson
78, retired carpenter

ATHENS -- Funeral for Alton Crutcher Thompson, 78, of Anderson will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Trevor Parker and the Rev. Tony Boyles officiating.

Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Thompson died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Lauderdale County to Andrew Thompson and Emma Camp Thompson. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received two Bronze Stars. A retired carpenter, he was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was the brother of the late Wilton Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Will Thompson; one son, A.F. Thompson of Anderson; three sisters, Clara Matthews of Anderson, Florence Long of Rogersville and Ila Quinones of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Andy Thompson, Lloyd Adams, Ralph Meredith, Anthony Lawrence, Hugh Wales, Calvin Lawrence, Billy Hamilton and Buck Marlow.

Gracie Borden
79, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Gracie Borden, 79, of Town Creek was Sunday at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Jorden officiating.

Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Borden died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Lawrence County to Jim Hodges and Claudia Glasco Hodges. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Enoch Borden; one son, Jimmy Hagood of Town Creek; one stepson, R.C. Borden of Town Creek; one daughter, Kathy Hagood of Hillsboro; one brother, Albert Hodges of Trinity; five sisters, Mattie Pearson and Josephine Fuller, both of Moulton, Viola Sutton of Trinity, Gladys Fuller of Gardendale and Christine Sutton of Huntsville; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.

Aubrey Paul Bowling
75, retired personnel manager

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Aubrey Paul Bowling, 75, of Somerville will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifford Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in Blue Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Bowling died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Morgan County to Monroe Britain Bowling and Sarah Angeline Ryan Bowling. He was a lifelong resident of the Florette community and a member of Blue Springs Baptist Church. He was a teacher at Cotaco High School from 1952 to 1962. He retired from 3M Co., where he was the personnel manager for 30 years. Mr. Bowling was a World War II veteran. He was active in the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and United Way.

Survivors include his wife, Mollie Jo Bowling; two daughters, Joan Southern of Atlanta and Jan Collier of Decatur; one brother, Montie Bowling of Somerville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Robert Ryan, R.C. Ryan, John Johnson, A.D. Johnson, Ronald Yancey and Harvey Bowling. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Home.

Theda Miller Cockrell
80, homemaker

Funeral for Theda Miller Cockrell, 80, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherry Harris and the Rev. Sandra Locke-Godbey officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cockrell died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at her home. She was born April 12, 1921, in Decatur to John Paul Miller and Madge Woodall Miller. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Baron Cockrell.

Survivors include two sons, David Miller Cockrell and Paul Lionel Cockrell, both of Decatur; one daughter, Mary "Jody" Smithey of Madisonville, Tenn.; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Brad Kingsbury, Paul Cagle, Jeff Cagle, Don Birchfield, James Knight and Walter Blackwell.

Bobbie Eubanks
66, homemaker

Graveside service for Bobbie Eubanks, 66, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Thayer officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Eubanks died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born July 30, 1934, in New Castle to James Velton Eubanks and Wilma Sharp Eubanks. She was a homemaker. She was the sister of Myra Bond and Evie White.

Survivors include four sons, Roger Travis and Phillip Travis, both of San Antonio, Texas, David Travis of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Clint Travis of Chattanooga; four sisters, Nell Rogers, Mary Roberts and Lukie Pressley, all of Decatur, and Pam Garrett of Gardendale; and seven grandchildren.

Nephews and grandchildren will be pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Flora Mae Golden
86, Goodyear retiree

Funeral for Flora Mae Golden, 86, of Pulaski, Tenn., will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Oak Park Church of God with the Rev. Carl Maynard officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Golden died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at National Health Care in Pulaski. She was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Piedmont to Akin Burnham and Belle Young Burnham. She was retired from Goodyear and was a member of Oak Park Church of God for 60 years. She was the widow of Herman Golden and the mother of Mary Prince.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Baker of Decatur; one sister, Sarah Aderhold of Birmingham; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Bill Little, Roy Borden, Robert Hanners, Jerry Haynes, Merv Waugh and Sonny Holmes.

Netta Bittick Inglis
84, retired nurse and businesswoman

Graveside service for Netta Bittick Inglis, 84, of Decatur was to be today at 2 p.m. at Decatur City Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Fennell officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Inglis died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital.

She was born March 24, 1917, in Buford, Tenn., to Robert Lee Bittick and Mary Etta Bittick.

She grew up in Tanner and graduated in 1939 from Benevolent Society Hospital nursing school in Decatur. She worked as a nurse for Dr. John Bragg until 1954, when she retired to help manage her husband's business. She was a Methodist.

She was the sister of Georgia White, Lena Bittick and Gerauda Bittick.

Survivors include her husband, Fred D. Inglis; and two sisters, Ada Taylor and Susie Odom, both of Decatur.

Pallbearers were to be George Ricks, Glendon Easter, Freddy Hough, Harold Kennedy, Barry Smith and Jim Halbrooks.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley or the American Cancer Society.

Claudie Green 'Red' Sanderson
72, retired truck driver

MOULTON -- Funeral for Claudie Green "Red" Sanderson, 72, of Moulton will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackie Shelton and the Rev. Roger Aldridge officiating.

Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8:30 at the funeral home.

Mr. Sanderson died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Sunbridge Nursing Home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1929, in Lawrence County to Aaron Sanderson and Susie Sanderson. He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Vest of Moulton and Selena Mitchell of Mount Hope; four sisters, Marie Brewer, Shirley Brewer and Eula Mae Parker, all of Moulton, and Velma Reeves of Decatur; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Josh Wallace, Jerry Lansdell, Buddy Brewer, Jerry Brewer, Wayne Cox and Donnie Early.

Thurman South
78, retired construction worker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Thurman South, 78, of Hartselle will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Blackman officiating.

Burial will be in New Hope North Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. South died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. He was born June 21, 1923, in Morgan County to Frank South and Eva South.

He was a retired construction worker for Bryson Construction Company and Farming.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel South; three sons, Mickel S. South of Saraland, Danny Franklin South of Decatur and Don Allen South of Hartselle; two daughters, Carol Kay South of Decatur and Cheryl Ann Higginbotham of Falkville; three sisters, Margie Robinson of Lacon, Mary Hazle of Danville and Shirley Bailey of Fairview; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
