ATHENS - Clyde Winston Gladden, 58, of Ardmore died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.

Mr. Gladden was born July 7, 1943, in Limestone County to Carl Gladden and Doris Gladden. He was a farmer. He was the father of the late Jody Gladden and the brother of the late Tommy Gladden.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Marie Gladden Eubanks; two brothers, Mason Gladden and Richard Gladden, both of Athens; and five grandchildren.

Walter Russell Sr.
75, retired farmer

ATHENS - Funeral for Walter Russell Sr., 75, of Athens will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Lockett Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in Thatch-Mann Cemetery with Peoples Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Russell died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Limestone County to Coleman Russell and Pearl Matthews Russell. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Effie Mae Russell; five sons, Walter Russell Jr. of Newton, Ga., and James Earl Russell, Jerry Lewis Russell, Fredrick Don Russell and Kedrick Wayne Russell, all of Athens; three daughters, Betty Jean Edwards of Huntsville, and Luella Leslie and Gwendolyn D. Shoulders, both of Athens; and two sisters, Pearlie Holley and Curlie N. Erskine, both of Madison.

William St. John
74, retired computer programer

JUPITER, Fla. - Graveside service for William St. John, 74, of Jupiter, Fla., and formerly of Morgan County, was held Thursday, July 12, at Riverside Memorial Park with the Rev. William Miller officiating and Aycock Funeral Home directing.

Mr. St. John died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Jupiter Medical Center. He was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Reform to Daniel Lester St. John and Mae Sherrill St. John.

He was a graduate of Falkville High School, a retired computer programmer, and a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Tequesta, Fla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was the brother of the late Harold St. John, the late Wilson St. John and the Emily Mae St. John Watson.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Corinne F. St. John.

Melvin Trafton Sawyer
69, retired metrology technician

ATHENS - Funeral for Melvin Trafton Sawyer, 69, of Athens will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Inman officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Sawyer died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 16, 1932, in Elizabeth City, N.C., to Eddie Preston Sawyer and Lily Forbes Sawyer.

A Limestone County resident since 1958, he worked 32 years for the U.S. government, retiring in 1989 as a metrology technician. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Delite Sawyer; two daughters, Janet Baeder and Jenny Bellomy-Ezell, both of Huntsville; one brother, Edward Lee Sawyer of Shiloh, N.C.; one sister, Kim Sawyer of Lorton, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jim Martindale, Donnie Crunk, Pete Pearson, Jerry Greer, Charles Dollar and Pettus Menefee.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fairview Baptist Church senior men's class.

Vivian Turney Vest
67, company manager

HARTSELLE - Funeral for Vivian Turney Vest, 67, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Nappier officiating.

Burial will be in Cook Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Vest died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 5, 1933, in Morgan County to Lemmie Rivers Turney and Susan Opal Sterling Turney.

She was a manager at Servamation in Decatur. She was a member of Piney Grove Christian Church. She was the sister of the late Rex Turney, the late Virgil Turney, the late Nell Childers and the late Johnnie Watkins.

Survivors include three daughters, Dottie Vest Mason of Springfield, Tenn., Sherry Beth Dobbins of Tanner and Susan Ann Reed of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Fletcher Turney of Athens, Bobby Turney of Hartselle and Ray Turney of Cookeville, Tenn.; four sisters Mildred McNutt of Hartselle and Dorothy Parsons, Dean Smith and Hazel Murphy, all of Falkville; and seven grandchildren.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

William Clinton Carter
82, retired truck driver
ATHENS - Funeral for William Clinton Carter, 82, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Lynn Marshall officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Carter died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Madison County to Willie B. Carter and Fannie B. Rogers Carter. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Murphy Hill Baptist Church. He was the father of the late Danny Carter and Kenneth Carter.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley G. Carter; two sons, Charles Van Carter of Dothan and Bryant Carter of Smith; one daughter, Linda Faye Smith of Hendersonville, Tenn.; two stepsons, Donald Grubb of Columbus, Ohio, and Kevin Grubb of Huntsville; two stepdaughters, Donna Grubb of Decatur and Deborah DeyErmand of Warren, Ohio; two brothers, Vernon Carter of Huntsville and Billy Carter of Albertville; three sisters, Cassina Browning, Peggy Campbell and Martha Carter, all of Huntsville; seven grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alacare Hospice.

Oakley A. Cole
79, World War II veteran

HARTSELLE - Graveside service for Oakley A. Cole, 79, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hartselle with the Rev. Bobby Morgan and the Rev. Bill Cole officiating.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Peck Funeral Home.

Mr. Cole died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Morgan County to Walter L. Cole and Sally Cowan Cole. He was a member of South Decatur Church of God and a World War II veteran. He was the father of the late William H. Cole. He was a retired service station operator.

Survivors include five sons, Gene Cole, Charles A. Cole, Mark S. Cole, Oakley L. Cole and Phillip A. Cole, all of Decatur; two brothers, L.W. Cole and the Rev. Bill Cole, both of Hartselle; two sisters, Bessie Byrd of Hartselle and Freda Adams of Birmingham; and five grandchildren.

Larry Gene Farr
47, laborer

HARTSELLE - Funeral for Larry Gene Farr, 47, of Dade City, Fla., and formerly of Danville, will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Slack Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Farr died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Sept. 9, 1953, in Cullman County to James Edward Farr and Omie Lee Hollaway Farr. He was an orange grove laborer in Florida. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Dade City.

Survivors include four brothers, Roger Farr of Tampa, Fla., Tommy Farr of Dade City, Stanley Farr of Hudson, Fla., and Rodney Farr of Danville; three sisters, Margie Tackett of Harold, Ky., Margaret McGee of Danville and Abbie Gail Posey of Hudson, Fla.

James Hollis Lawrence
77, retired business owner

HARTSELLE - Funeral for James Hollis Lawrence, 77, of Hartselle will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Chambers officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Lawrence died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham. He was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Morgan County to William Henry Lawrence and Lillie Pearl Lankford Lawrence. He was retired as owner of NAPA Auto Parts in Hartselle. He was a Methodist, a World War II Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Survivors include his wife, Wilda Ryan Lawrence; one son, Bill Lawrence of Hartselle; one daughter, Beth Baker of Corner; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Danny Baker, John Maxwell, James Randolph, Tommy Ryan, Charles Smith, Allen Smith and Nicholas Lawrence.

Winfred Elam Marbut
76, postal service retiree

ATHENS - Funeral for Winfred Elam Marbut, 76, of Elkmont was to be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Thomas Farris, James Adams and Ronnie Duncan officiating.

Burial was to be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Mr. Marbut died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born July 11, 1925, in Limestone County, and was retired as a farmer and from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a deacon at Salem Springs Baptist Church. He was the widower of Edna Mae Marbut.

Survivors include three sons, Larry Marbut, Stephen Marbut and Mark Marbut, all of Elkmont; seven daughters, Carolyn Graham, Linda Marbut, Karen Nave, Claire Goodin and Patty Davis, all of Athens, and Vicky Graham and Myra Marbut, both of Elkmont; and two brothers, J.B. Marbut of Elkmont and Eugene Marbut of Athens; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be James Graham, Randy Davis, Michael Graham, Jeff Webster, Nicholas Marbut, John Lefevre, Will Phillips and Nelson Marbut.

Memorials may be made to the Salem Springs Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mary June Newby
76, assistant manager of Henig Furs

ATHENS - Funeral for Mary June Newby, 76, of Athens was to be today at 11 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Aaron Johnson officiating.

Burial was to be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mrs. Newby died Monday, July 16, 2001, at her home. She was born June 10, 1925, in Limestone County to Joseph and Frances Holland White. She was assistant manager at Henig Furs in Huntsville. She was the widow of Carter A. Newby and the sister of the late Ladye Joe Meadows.

Survivors include one sister, Jewel Rowe of Toney.

Pallbearers were to be Keith Rowe, B.J. Rowe, Sonny Meadows, Travis T. Meadows, Mark Wales and Jeff Wales.

Dr. John Ploussard
75, medical doctor

Private service for Dr. John Ploussard, 75, of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Culotta officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 5 to 9 at the funeral home.

Dr. Ploussard died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 12, 1926, in St. Louis to John H. Ploussard Sr. and Hazel Mangold Ploussard. He earned his medical degree from St. Louis University and performed a residency in pediatric medicine from Providence Hospital in Rhode Island. He served as a flight surgeon in the Korean War. Dr. Ploussard practiced pediatrics for more than 35 years, primarily in Huntsville. For the past 14 years he practiced emergency medicine in area hospitals.

Survivors include his wife, Kim Crovo Ploussard; one daughter, Suzanne Ploussard of Hueytown; two stepdaughters, Amanda Richards Templeton and Brooke Richards, both of Decatur; one brother, Robert L. Ploussard of Lake Barrington, Ill.; and one grandson.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Kincer, Phillip Templeton, Dr. Donald Autry, Dr. Frank Benson, Robert L. Ploussard and James Reeve.

Memorials may be made to the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, c/o Huntsville Hospital Foundation, 101 Sivley Road, Huntsville, AL. 35801, or Hospice of the Valley.
