Robert G. Thurman

Graveside service for Robert G. Thurman, 67, of Huntsville was to be today at 10 a.m. at Burningtree Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Walter Schmidt officiating and Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Thurman died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Birmingham. He was born July 27, 1933, in Utah. He was a Korean War veteran and a member of North Auburn Hills Baptist Church in Auburn Hills, Mich. He was a retired teamster.

Survivors include his wife, Rheta Thurman; two sons, Stanley Thurman of Toney and Stuart Thurman of Decatur; two daughters, Regina Naron of Topeka, Kan., and Carlene Ray of Decatur; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Frances LeCroix Birdwell
81, NASA budget analyst
ATHENS -- Graveside service for Frances LeCroix Birdwell, 81, of Athens will be today at 10:30 a.m. at Athens City Cemetery with Bill Irby officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Birdwell died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born Dec. 6, 1919, in Limestone County. She was a member of Hobbs Street Church of Christ and a retired NASAbudget analyst.

Survivors include one son, Venson E. Birdwell Jr. of Birmingham; one daughter, Kathy Crawford of Athens; one brother, Carl LeCroix of Athens; one sister, Ruth Fleming of Athens; and two grandsons.

Carl Boyd
64, bricklayer

Funeral for Carl Boyd, 64, of Courtland will be Monday at noon at Byler Road Church of Christ in Moulton with George Gee officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Boyd died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born May 16, 1937, in Lawrence County to Carlton Tommy Boyd and Minnie Loyd Boyd. He was a bricklayer and a member of Byler Road Church of Christ.

Survivors include three brothers, Eugene Boyd of Louisville, Ky., and Luther Boyd and Gene Boyd, both of Moulton; and five sisters, Hattie McDaniel, Marie Truss, Bertha Nell "Bernell" McDaniel, Bessie Echols and Emma Jones, all of Moulton.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Thelma Gertrude 'Gertie' Hannah
83, home health nurse

ATHENS -- Funeral for Thelma Gertrude "Gertie" Hannah, 83, of Lester will be today at 1 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Van Bowers officiating.

Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.

Mrs. Hannah died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Florence Comprehensive Care Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Lauderdale County. She was a retired home health nurse, former school cook and a member of Craig Chapel Church of Christ. She was the mother of the late Paul Wilson and the sister of the late Dalton Butler and Kathleen Richardson.

Survivors include her husband, Clyde Hannah; four sons, J.C. Wilson, Gene Wilson and Dennis Wilson, all of Florence, and Steve Wilson of Leighton; one daughter, Sheila Zills of Prospect, Tenn.; one stepson, Bill Hannah of Athens; two stepdaughters, Betty Grisham of Florence and Janet Owens of Lester; three brothers, Carlos Butler, Coy Butler and Johnny Butler, all of Florence; two sisters, Sarah Jackson of Florence and Lila Grissom of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

James Ralph 'Hoppy' Hopson
78, World War II veteran

GARDENDALE -- Funeral for James Ralph "Hoppy" Hopson, 78, of Gardendale will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Gardendale Chapel with the Rev. Dereck Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in Moncrief Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hopson died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Birmingham. He was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Falkville. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and the owner and operator of Gardendale Jewelry Co. He was a volunteer and professional member of the Gardendale Police Department. He lived in Gardendale for 50 years and helped establish it as a city. He was the widower of Evelyn Hopson.

Survivors include two sons, James R. Hopson Jr. of Hayden and Gary Alan Hopson of LaGrande, Ore.; three daughters, Sharon Jones of Crane Hill, Gaynell Barnett of West Blocton and Mickey Dorland of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; one sister, Odell Johnson of Moulton; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Grace Elizabeth Newsom
Infant

MOULTON -- Graveside service for infant Grace Elizabeth Newsom of Moulton will be today at 1 p.m. at East Lawrence Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Lavanul Sherrill officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

The infant died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born July 18, 2001, in Huntsville to Kevin Ray Newsom and Nancy LeShae Oliver.

She was the great-granddaughter of the late Lawrence Newsom, Spencer Hutto and Easter Hutto.

Survivors include her parents of Moulton; one brother, Logan Ray Newsom of Hatton; her grandparents, Harvey Ray Oliver and Gloria Oliver of Hatton, and Larry Ray Newsom and Jewel Ann Newsom of Moulton; and her great-grandparents, Aaron "Bud" Pitt and Ruth Pitt of Moulton and Maxine Newsom of Decatur.

Roy Peebles
85, patent model maker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Roy Peebles, 85, of Falkville will be today at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Childs officiating.

Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery near Eva.

Mr. Peebles died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home. He was born July 3, 1916, in Lawrence County to James Walter Peebles and Alice Mabel Owens Peebles. He retired from General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich., as a patent model maker. He was the father of the late Jonni P. Livingston.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby V. Hopper Peebles; two sons, James R. Peebles of North Fort Myers, Fla., and K. Michael Peebles of Hartselle; four daughters, Betty Jo Resha of Goodlettsville, Tenn., Sarah E. Chadwell of Tazewell, Tenn., Alice F. Mahon of Rockwood, Mich., and Linda K. Shelkey of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; one brother, Lell Peebles of Indiana; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Christopher Buxin, Jason Mahon, Jerry Mahon, James R. Peebles, K. Michael Peebles and Scott Shelkey.

Mary Shuler Sibrans
88, registered nurse

SUMTER, S.C. -- Mary Shuler Sibrans, 88, of Sumter died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the home of Dale Hadden, 12 Warren Court in Sumter. Bullock Funeral Home will announce a memorial service.

Mrs. Sibrans was born Sept. 12, 1912, in Manning, S.C., to the Rev. Frederick Hawkins and Mary Whitmire Shuler Hawkins. She was a graduate of New Rochelle School of Nursing in New York and was a registered nurse. She retired in 1976 from Pageland School Systems in Pageland, S.C. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Sumter. She was the widow of Dr. William A. Sibrans, and the sister of the late Frederick Shuler, Martha Plowden and Helen Hartman.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. D.F. Sibrans of Decatur and Rick S. Sibrans of Rockhill, S.C.; two daughters, Mary Kaye Laban of Beaufort, S.C., and Dale Campbell Hadden of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hilda Maples Stringer
75, retired care worker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Hilda Maples Stringer, 75, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at New Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Smothers and the Rev. Tom Campbell officiating.

Burial will be in New Friendship Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stringer died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born March 20, 1926, in Morgan County to Charles Edward Maples and Lee Velma Johnson Maples. She was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church and retired as a direct care worker at Lurleen B. Wallace Developmental Center.

Survivors include one son, Stanley Stringer of Hartselle; one daughter, Debra L. Saki of Huntsville; two brothers, Robert Maples and Melvin Maples, both of Somerville; two sisters, Mildred Owens of Union Hill and Helen Sallee of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Nephew will be pallbearers.

Eveline F. Campbell Watkins
76, homemaker

Funeral for Eveline F. Campbell Watkins, 76, of Trinity will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Van Landingham and the Rev. Jim Blair officiating.

Burial will be in Caddo Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Watkins died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Limestone County to Albert and Clara Campbell. She was a homemaker and a member of Caddo United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon Watkins; one son, Hal Watkins of Decatur; three daughters, Glenda Pruitt of St. Mark, Fla., Deborah Watkins of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Christle Blair of Midlothian, Md.; one brother, Wallace Campbell of Trinity; two sisters, Jewell Sherrill of Caddo and Imogene Wade of Nashville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Carr, David Brown, Alex Brown, Curt Watkins, Lee Watkins and Jonathan Hartsfield.

Earlene Padgett Young
83, Sunday school teacher

RED BAY -- Funeral for Earlene Padgett Young, 83, of Hackleburg will be today at 3 p.m. at Hackleburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter Marlow officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar Tree Cemetery with Deaton Funeral Homes Inc. directing. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Young died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at her home. She was born June 22, 1918, in Marion County to Floyd Evans and Maude Walker Evans. She was a member of Hackleburg United Methodist Church since 1954 and served as Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Draimon Young; one son, William "Bill" Padgett of Hartselle; one stepson, Carl Young of Hollywood, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Sandra Kreger of Vacaville, Calif.; one brother, Raymond Evans of Birmingham; two sisters, Doris Lawrence of Hackleburg and Betty Cantrell of Sherman, Texas; one grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Bill Gregg, Eddie Raper, Bobby Fowler, Kenneth Young and Jimmy Stidham.

Julia Hurst Crutcher
94, homemaker
ATHENS -- Graveside service for Julia Hurst Crutcher, 94, of Athens will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Athens City Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Curtis Coleman and the Rev. Dr. Steven Screws officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends today from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Crutcher died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born May 29, 1907, in Jefferson County to the Rev. Henry M. Hurst and Mattie Lou Hurst. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church, where she once was a choir member. She was past president and member of Women's Society of Christian Service in the Athens and Decatur district. She was named one of Alabama's gracious ladies in the 1950s. She was a charter member of the Athenian Study Club and volunteer for the Athens-Limestone Hospital Auxiliary. She was the widow of William Baker Crutcher.

Survivors include two sons, William Baker Crutcher Jr. and John Marshall Crutcher, both of Athens; one daughter, Margaret Anne Crutcher White of Fayetteville, Ga.; one sister, Mary Moore Hurst Lemmon of Birmingham; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be William Baker Crutcher III, John Marshall Crutcher Jr., Randy Dean Ricketts, John W. White Jr., Lee Bradley White, Greg Anderson, Mark Williams Edwards and Kenny Rossman.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.

Robert Wallace Montgomery
91, Auburn professor

OPELIKA -- Graveside service for Robert Wallace Montgomery, 91, of Auburn will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Auburn Memorial Park with the Rev. Dr. John Jeffers officiating and Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Montgomery died Friday, July 20, 2001 at Bethany House in Auburn. He was born April 22, 1910, in Wren. He received his bachelor's degree from Auburn University and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He was department head of vocational and adult education at Auburn from 1961 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1981. He was president of the Alabama Rehabilitation Association and was named to the Vocational Association Hall of Fame. He received Ohio State University's Centennial Award and Auburn's Outstanding Education Alumnus Award. He also was a civil rights activist. He was the widower of Stella Etheredge Montgomery, who was reared in Town Creek.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Montgomery of Midway and Ron Montgomery of Auburn; one daughter, Linda C. Montgomery of Auburn; one sister, Marion Montgomery of Wren; one sister, Irene Shoemaker of Wren; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
