Charles Sidney Scott
76, retired police sergeant

Funeral for Charles Sidney Scott, 76, of Pell City was Sunday at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald T. King III, the Rev. Kevin Dewberry and the Rev. Paul Brasher officiating.

Burial was in St. Clair Memorial Gardens in Pell City with Kilgroe Funeral Home of Pell City directing.

Mr. Scott died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his home. He was born July 31, 1924, in Winston County to C.J. Scott and Ida Mae Scott.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a field medic. He was a retired police sergeant with the Pell City Police Department. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was the brother of the late Louise Hester and Ann Hunkapillar.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Scott; five sons, Johnny Turner, Roger Scott and Dean Scott, all of Pell City, and Larry Scott and Dennis Scott, both of Pinson; one daughter, Vicky King of Pell City; two brothers, Carlos Wallace and Luther James Scott, both of Pell City; two sisters, Lucy Lane "Scotty" Pearson of Moulton and Mary Ann Cooper of Decatur; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Rodney Scott, Brian Scott, Chase Scott, Stephen Scott, Justin Scott and Derek Turner.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Philip L. Ross
57, product engineer

Private memorial service for Philip L. Ross, 57, of Decatur was to be today at 4 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home.

Mr. Ross died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at his home. He was born June 15, 1944, in Detroit to Philip Jerome Ross and Mary Ross.

He worked as a product engineer for Prestolite in Port Huron, Mich., before transferring to the Decatur plant. He was a member of Decatur Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one son, Kyle Ross of Decatur; two daughters, Rika Ross and Karen Ross, both of San Diego; two brothers, Alexander Ross of Mountainview, Calif., and Charlie Ross of New Port Richey, Fla.; and one sister, Janet Ross of San Diego.

Louise Ethel Walker
80, homemaker

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Louise Ethel Walker, 80, of Birmingham will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Decatur City Cemetery with James Bridges officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Walker died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham.

She was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Limestone County to Sandy Wallace and Ethel Wallace. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She was the widow of Charles Walker.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Wallace Roberts of Decatur; one half-brother, Tony Wallace of Childersburg; and one half-sister, Joyce Ann Wallace of Childersburg.

Daniel W. Wren
73, U.S. Army 1st sergeant, retired

Memorial service for Daniel W. Wren, 73, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bicentennial Post Chapel at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville with the Rev. William Humphries officiating and Sharpley Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Wren died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Holden, W.Va., to Roy S. Wren and Ora Robert Wren. He lived in Chester, S.C., before joining the military in 1946. His overseas tours included Tule, Green land, in 1956 and Germany from 1967 to 1970, where he was a 1st sergeant in Artillery B Battery of the Pershing Missile Division. He served in Korea from 1972 to 1973.

He retired at Fort Sill, Okla., in 1976 after 26 years in the Army.

After moving to Decatur in 1976, he was a civil service employee at Redstone Arsenal until 1990 with the U.S. Army Ordnance Missile and Munitions Center and School, where he helped rewrite the soldier's manual for testing and evaluation. Beginning in 1993, he worked for Murray Guard Co. in Decatur at Wolverine Tube, 3M Co. and Boeing Co. until April 2000.

He was the vice president of the North Alabama Chapter of the National Association for Uniformed Services for military retirees.

Survivors include his wife, Mary H. Parrott Wren; two sons, Danny Wren and Larry Wren, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Anita D. Green , Debra K. Hubbert and Shirley A. Bodine, all of Decatur, and Rita S. Black of Killen; one brother, John Carpenter of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the North Alabama Chapter of NAUS, P.O. Box 8290, Redstone Arsenal, AL 35808-8290; the Committee on Church Cooperation; or Hospice of the Valley.

Mary Lee Kingston Dobbins
Homemaker
Funeral for Mary Lee Kingston Dobbins of Decatur will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at King's Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. W.H. Ragland officiating.

Burial will be in Sterrs Cemetery with Sharpley Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Dobbins died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at her home. She was born to Josh Kingston and Anna Kingston. She was a member of Oakland Methodist Church in Limestone County. After moving to Decatur, she joined King's Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was an active member before she came ill. She was a homemaker and raised one grandson, Donald Porter, and one foster son, James Tapscott. She was a member of the Decatur Bronze Singers and served as treasurer for years. She was a member of the Semper Fidelis Social Club, the Birthday Club and the Ebony Airs Club. She was the widow of John W. Dobbins.

Survivors include two sons, David L. Dobbins of Cleveland and John T. Dobbins of Huntsville; three daughters, Johnnie Mitchell of Cleveland, Allean Reed of Decatur and Gwendolyn Gilliard of New Orleans; one stepdaughter, Ella Mae Scales of Birmingham; 39 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Eliska Richter Grissom
88, homemaker

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Eliska Richter Grissom, 88 of Falkville was to be today at 2 p.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Carter officiating.

Burial was to be in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Mrs. Grissom died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. She was born July 14, 1913, to Arthur Richter and Louise Schaffer Richter. She was a homemaker and the widow of Oscar "Slim" Grissom.

Survivors include three sons, George Grissom and David Grissom, both of Vinemont, and Jim Grissom of Falkville; one daughter, Janette Putman of Walter; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

John Carroll Ray
69, hospital administrator

HARTSELLE -- Memorial service for John Carroll Ray, 69, of Hartselle, will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Thompson officiating.

Mr. Ray died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Oct. 24, 1931, in Beaumont, Texas, to John Carroll Ray Sr. and Thelma Higgs Ray. He was an associate director of regional services at Cedar Ridge Hospital in Independence, Mo., and was a graduate of Beaumont High School. Mr. Ray was a seaman first class in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War.

Survivors include one son, John Carroll Ray III of Hartselle; one daughter, Mary Lou Miner of Zion, Ill.; his mother, of Atlanta; one sister, Dorothy Evelyn Shahan of Atlanta; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Richard Tyrone Thompson
27, Lucent Technologies employee

Funeral for Richard Tyrone Thompson, 27, of Atlanta will be Wednesday at noon at Macedonia Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Decatur with the Rev. Robert Griffin officiating.

Burial will be in Sterrs Cemetery with Sharpley Funeral Home directing. The body will be in the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Thompson died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He was born Dec. 18, 1973, in Chicago to Richard Malone Jr. and Clemmie Banks. He worked at Lucent Technologies in Atlanta and served in the U.S. Army Reserves in Athens, Ga., where he received an achievement medal. He was the brother of the late James T. Thompson.

Survivors include his mother, Clemmie Banks of Chicago; his stepfather, James Banks of Chicago; three brothers, Ronald Thompson, Darrin Thompson and Eddie Nelson Jr., all of Huntsville; and one sister, Felicia Thompson of Huntsville.

Pallbearers will be Kunta Baker, Broderick Cleveland, Walter Huff, Tyrone Lauary, Jerry DeLoach, Bill Rice and Jerry Rice.

Enza Belle Watlington
89, homemaker

PELL CITY -- Funeral for Enza Belle Watlington, 89, of Pell City will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Seddon Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Foote and the Rev. Eugene Thomason officiating.

Burial will be in St. Clair Memorial Gardens with Kilgroe Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before services.

Mrs. Watlington died Monday, July 30, 2001, at her home. She was born April 15, 1912, to Willard Blair and Anna Belle Eason Blair. She was a homemaker and a member of Seddon Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 54 years. The mayor proclaimed April 29th as Watlington Day in Pell City for her years of service to the community.

Survivors include three sons, Raymond A. Watlington Jr., and Perry Gene Watlington, both of Pell City, and Roy Edward Watlington of Ringgold, Ga.; five daughters, Betty W. Clements and Mary Ann Turner, both of Pell City, Margie Belle McCain of Tanner, Violet Beavers of Georgia and Rose Marie Brigham of Gardendale; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Underwood, David Watlington, Phillip Clements, Mike Watlington, Bret Watlington and Adam Beavers.

Grandsons will be honorary pallbearers.

David H. Hunter
77, retired federal highway bridge engineer
MONTGOMERY -- Memorial service for David H. Hunter, 77, of Montgomery will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Warden officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hunter died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. He was born July 18, 1924, in North Carolina to John Blake Hunter and Louise Pickle Hunter. He was a retired federal highway bridge engineer.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Stockton Hunter; one son, David Blake Hunter of Montgomery; one daughter, Carol Hunter Rose of Montgomery; one brother, Jimmy Hunter of Winston-Salem, N. C.; two sisters, Nancy Hern of Cary, N.C., and Nell Myers of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.

Samuel Jackson
54, Dunlop Tire employee

HUNTSVILLE -- Funeral for Samuel Jackson, 54, of Valhermoso Springs will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Green officiating.

Burial will be in Curry Cemetery with Nelms Memorial Funeral Home of Huntsville directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Jackson died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Huntsville. He was born Dec. 14, 1946, in Valhermoso Springs to R.D. Jackson and Edweena Jackson. He was an employee of Dunlop Tire Corp.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Jackson; one daughter, Joycelyn Jackson of Valhermoso Springs; his mother of Valhermoso Springs; four brothers, Edward Jackson and Calvin Jackson, both of Valhermoso Springs, Willie Jackson of Decatur and Charlie Jackson of Hillsboro; and four sisters, Melvina Chatman of Huntsville, Odessa Hill of Trinity, Annie Jackson of Valhermoso Springs and Doris McDonald of Decatur.

Mose Parham Jr.
71, retired janitor

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mose Parham Jr., 71, of New Hope will be Saturday at noon at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Sanderfer officiating.

Burial will be in Ragland Cemetery at Green brier with Peoples Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Parham died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born July 16, 1930, in Limestone County to Mose Parham Sr. and Lizzie Jones Parham. He retired from a janitorial service.

Survivors include four sons, Lee Parham, James Parham, John Parham and Calvin Parham, all of Huntsville; four daughters, Anna Glasgow and Novice Baker, both of Huntsville, and Minnie Pearl Pride of Triana and Linda Parham of Worcester, Mass.; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
