Mable Pressnell Rigel

Funeral for Mable Pressnell Rigel, 92, of Decatur will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Malcolm Rigel and the Rev. Gene Lankford officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rigel died today, Aug. 7, 2001, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Oct. 18, 1908, in Limestone County to Lawrence Leland Pressnell and Lula Hargrove Pressnell. She was a homemaker and a member of Austinville United Methodist Church. She was the widow of S.M. Rigel and mother of the late Herman Allen Rigel.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Rigel Harvey and Frances Rigel Free, both of Decatur; one brother, Clifford Pressnell of Decatur; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ray Mitchell, Lamar Millwood, Roy Austin, Dan Prater, Raymond Hamilton, Greg Hughes and Charles Brothers.

Emerson Russell
90, retired radio reporter

Graveside service for Emerson Russell, 90, of St. Louis, Mo., will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in St. Louis with the Rev. David Teuscher officiating and Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary directing.

Mr. Russell died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in St. Louis. He was born Aug. 2, 1911, in Decatur to John Hugh Russell and Annie Clark Russell. A 1929 graduate of Decatur High School, he moved to St. Louis and worked for a radio broadcasting company.

Survivors include one son, John Russell of St. Louis; one daughter, Roxane Wallace of Michigan; three brothers, Hugh Russell, Raymond Russell and Clark Russell, all of Decatur; three sisters, Marilyn Clark Hill of Decatur and Estalena R. Gee and Miriam R. Lahr, both of Bloomington, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

Gladys Irene Vasser
82, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Gladys Irene Vasser, 82, of Athens will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Lawrence and the Rev. Al Rudolph officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Vasser died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. She was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Limestone County to Robert Whitworth and Ethel Lynch Whitworth. She was a homemaker. She was a member of RSVP and the Senior Citizens Band of Athens for several years. She was the widow of Aaron Leamon Vasser.

Survivors include one son, Randall Vasser of Tuscumbia; two daughters, Barbara Dean of Athens and Jewell Barnes of Killen; two brothers, Robert Whitworth Jr. of Athens and Jerry Whitworth of Nashville; two sisters, Hettie Mae Lentz of Athens and Lucille Bailey of Dalton, Ga.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.Grandsons, a grandson-in-law and nephews will be pallbearers.

Annie Irene Browning
76, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Annie Irene Browning, 76, of Athens was to be today at 11 a.m. at Sardis Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Keenum and the Rev. Calvin Inman officiating.

Burial was to be in the adjoining cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Browning died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Limestone County to George Alvie Willis and Melvie Hargrove Willis. She was a homemaker and a member of Sardis Springs Baptist Church. She was the widow of Ben Browning.

Survivors include three sons, Ray Browning and Lamar Browning, both of Athens, and Donnie Browning of Fayetteville, Tenn.; one daughter, Shirley Dilworth of Athens; one sister, Mary Higginbotham of Athens; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be DeWayne Browning, Wayne Patterson, Michael Browning, Ryan Browning, Timothy Browning, Todd Crouch, Patrick Small and Nathan Browning.

Minnie Pearl Redus
90, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Minnie Pearl Redus, 90, of Pulaski, Tenn., will be Friday at noon at Elkmont Cumberland Presbyterian Church of America with the Rev. Oscar Edmond officiating.

Burial will be in Smithfield Cemetery in Elkmont with Peoples Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church for one hour before the service.

Mrs. Redus died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Hillside Hospital in Pulaski. She was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Giles County to Louis Mason and Minnie Rhodes Mason. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, William Redus of Pulaski and Brady Redus of Elkmont; four daughters, Mattie P. Grizzard and Myrtle Lucille Evans, both of Nashville, and Pauline Coleman and Mary L. Jones, both of Pulaski; one sister, Ellen White of Indianapolis; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

William Beuin Rutherford
56, retired construction worker

MOULTON -- Funeral for William Beuin Rutherford, 56, of Moulton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with Neal Carter officiating.

Burial will be in Rutherford Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Rutherford died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in New Mexico. He was born April 16, 1945, in Lawrence County to William Herschel Rutherford and Geneva Rutherford Carroll. He was a construction worker who retired from Monsanto.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Geneva Carroll and Windham Carroll of Moulton; one daughter, Stacy Page of Haleyville; one brother, Brennen H. Rutherford of Anniston; and two grandchildren.

Former and present members of the 1st Special Forces Group Airborne will be pallbearers.

Pride Saint
86, former grocery store owner

MOUNT HOPE -- Funeral for Pride Saint, 86, of Mount Hope will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. J.B. Wells and the Rev. Sam Wallace officiating.

Burial will be in Fergerson Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Saint died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at his home. He was born in Aug. 27, 1914, in Lawrence County to Wes Saint and Mary Susie Killingsworth Saint. He was a former member of the Lawrence County Board of Revenue and owned Pride Saint's Grocery. He was a member and trustee of Okolona Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Portwood Saint; one son, Avis Saint of Town Creek; one daughter, Barbara Byars of Mount Hope; two brothers, Leland Saint of Gadsden and Clyde Saint of Boscobel, Wis.; two sisters, Kathleen Patterson of Biloxi, Miss., and Lois Necaise of Ocean Springs, Miss.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Coy Saint, Jeff Byars, Kevin Saint, Brian Saint, Max Witt and Lew Byars.

Robie Newt Slaten
88, retired farmer, carpenter

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Robie Newt Slaten, 88, of Vinemont will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Brown officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Williams-McCracken Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Slaten died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 1, 1912, in Morgan County to Charles Robe Slaten and Susie Halbrooks Slaten. He was a retired farmer and carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Hardin Slaten; three sons, Edwin "Mr. Ed" Slaten of Eva, Kenneth Slaten of Vinemont and Dwight Slaten of Walker County; two brothers, James Slaten of Decatur and Charles Slaten of Somerville; five sisters, Nannie Whaley and Mary Bennett, both of Falkville, Katherine Lilback of Ohio, Helen Thomas of Somerville and Betty McCarley of Decatur; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mark Terry
43, truck driver

MOULTON -- Funeral for Mark Terry, 43, of Moulton will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with Charles Clayborn officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Terry died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in Sikeston, Mo. He was born May 25, 1958, in Lawrence County to Herman Lewis Terry and Vernos Peebles Terry Grisham. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and a truck driver for Emerson Electric Transportation in Missouri.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth George Terry; three sons, Charles Cramer, Thomas Cramer and Christopher Terry, all of Moulton; one daughter, Lorraine Terry of Moulton; one brother, Herman Terry Jr. of Moulton; two sisters, Lucy Jordan and Ann Adams, both of Moulton; and one granddaughter.

Sibyl McMillan Watson
82, school secretary

Graveside service for Sibyl McMillan Watson, 82, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Summerford officiating and Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Watson died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born June 21, 1919, in Lawrence County, to Dee Floyd McMillan and Nona Sivley McMillan. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was a retired secretary for Decatur High School.

Survivors include two daughters, Jan Watson of Decatur and Linda Moody of Richmond, Texas; one brother, Harold Floyd McMillan of Huntsville; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Nettie L. Biggs

ATHENS -- Funeral for Nettie L. Biggs, 83, of Athens will be Friday at 2 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Inman officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Biggs died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Limestone County to James Scoggins and Eva Gates Scoggins. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She was the widow of George L. Biggs and the sister of the late Lincoln Scoggins, Simon Scoggins, Johnson Scoggins, Jimmy Scoggins and Mary Scoggins Nichols Brown. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one brother, Raymond Scoggins of Elkmont; one sister, Ethel V. Wales of Athens; one stepdaughter, Iris N. Webber of Wheaton, Md.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Members of Fairview Baptist Church will be pallbearers.

Elizabeth Sewell Billingsley
51. Homemaker

MOBILE -- Graveside service for Elizabeth Sewell Billingsley, 51, of Mobile will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville with Radney Funeral Home directing.

A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Mobile Trinity Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the memorial service.

Mrs. Billingsley died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in Mobile. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Whit Whitman of Daphne, and Hilton Billingsley and Jake Billingsley, both of Mobile; one daughter, Carrie Whitman McCrory of Gulf Shores; and two brothers, George Adams Jr. of Birmingham, and Michael Adams of Decatur.

Memorials may be made to the Hill Knapp Memorial Fund at Huntsville Hospital.

Carl James Britnell
74, carpenter

RUSSELLVILLE -- Funeral for Carl James Britnell, 74, of Russellville will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rowe Wren and the Rev. Eddie Wix officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Pinkard Funeral Home. The body will be in the church for one hour before the service.

Mr. Britnell died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. He was born July 15, 1927, in Franklin County to Gilbert Britnell and Ida Brashears Britnell. He was the widower of Mildred Hill Britnell. He was a lifelong resident of Franklin County and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was a member of Carpenter's Local 1274 in Decatur and was a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Mae Britnell; one son, Kenneth D. Balentine of Milton, Fla.; three daughters, Cathy Wiginton of Russellville, Carol Langston Botts of Tupelo, Miss., and Glenda Langston Landers of Ecru, Miss.; one brother, Jewel Britnell of Russellville; one sister, Mavis Hallmark of Macon, Ga.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
