Thomas Jerry Powers

Funeral for Thomas Jerry Powers, 58, of Hartselle will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Grimes and the Rev. Royce Teague officiating.

Burial will be in Russell Cemetery in Florette with military at the graveside. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Powers died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at his home. He was born June 3, 1943, in Russellville to Otho Calvin Powers and Vera Mae Lindley Powers. He was a member of United Church of God, a veteran of the United States Army and a police officer in Morgan County for six years. He played gospel music with several groups.

Survivors include his wife, Mertie Powers of Hartselle; two sons, Tyron Powers and Frank Young, both of Decatur; four daughters, Christy Powers of Hartselle, Michelle Powers of Harlingen, Texas, Regina Powers of Decatur and Ronda Cooper of Somerville; one sister, Stella Ramirez of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Roy Powers of Somerville; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Harold Fowler, Scotty Smity, Frank Young, Myron Fuller, Ricky Cooper and Ray Jackson.

Collie 'Hoppy' Rhone Jr.

Funeral for Collie "Hoppy" Rhone Jr., 64, of Decatur was to be today at noon at Sharpley Funeral Home with the Rev. Barney Mays officiating.

Burial was to be in Sterrs Cemetery.

Mr. Rhone died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Leland, Miss., to Collie Rhone Sr. and Jeanetta Rhone. He was the father of the late Collie Rhone III.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Rhone; five daughters, Jeanetta Rhone of Cincinnati, and Melvina Rhone, Janary Rhone, Katherine Rhone and Bonnie Rhone, all of Chicago; four stepdaughters, Toni Brown, Connie Johnson, Tina Potts and Nina Taylor, all of Chicago; five stepsons, Lamont Johnson, Lawrence Johnson and Darryl Johnson, all of Chicago, Brian Johnson of Peoria, Ill., and Michael Johnson of Decatur; 49 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Melvin Cullen Sims

ATHENS -- Funeral for Melvin Cullen Sims, 88, of Athens will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Dunn officiating.

Burial with full Masonic rites will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Sims died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born July 25, 1913, in Limestone County to Leonard Sims and Dora Swanner Sims. He was a retired NASA supervisor and a member of Isom Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Athens Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes "Nan" Brown Sims; one son, Leonard Joe Sims of Athens; two daughters, Patricia Sims Bryan of Falkville and Carlan L. Sims of Athens; one brother, Kenneth Sims of South Carolina; one sister, Kathaleen Adams of Athens; three grandsons; two step-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Doug Sims, Brett Bryan, Shane Bryan, J.C. Prater, Colton Dunnavant and Sol Rudolph.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Carl 'Scooter' Wilson

ATHENS -- Funeral for Carl "Scooter" Wilson, 67, of Chicago, Ill., and formerly of Athens, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home with the Rev. John Irving officiating.

Burial will be in Thatch-Mann Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Wilson died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, in Chicago. He was born Nov. 18, 1933, in Athens to Floyd Wilson Sr. and Annie Lou Wilson. He was a retired General Motors employee.

Survivors include one brother, Floyd Wilson Jr. of Athens; and four sisters, Catherine Cunningham of Huntsville, Christine Wilson of Chicago, and Arnell Farrar and Elena Rich, both of Athens.

Jeffrey S. Garth
TUSCUMBIA -- Funeral for Jeffrey S. Garth, 39, will be Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. J.C. Carter officiating and Thompson & Son Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Sterrs Cemetery, Decatur. The body will be in the church one hour before the service Monday.

Mr. Garth died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence.

Survivors include one daughter, Ebony Garth of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother, Shirley Nevett of Sheffield; two sisters, Staria Chambers of Sheffield and Diana Nevett of Gyrma, Ga.; one brother, Stephan Garth of Memphis, Tenn.; and one grandson.

Sarah Dorothy Hardy

ATHENS -- Funeral for Sarah Dorothy Hardy, 73, of Athens will be today at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Aaron Johnson officiating and McConnell Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Family Life Center.

Mrs. Hardy died at home Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001. She was born March 4, 1928, in Grovania, Ga., to Ollie F. Davis and Ethel Smith Davis.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, George B. Hardy; one son, Ben Hardy of Athens; three daughters, Carol Hardy of Houston, Texas, Laurie Hardy of Denver, Colo., and Mary Bailey of Athens; two sisters, Carolyn Scudder of Columbus, Ga., and Ann Thompson of Marietta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Franks, Terry McCormick, Reg Britt, Mickey Kirkland, Bob Ingrum and Charles Smith.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Youth Program or Hospice of Limestone County.

Lee Ora McAbee

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Lee Ora McAbee, 85, of Decatur will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodger White officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery near Danville. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. McAbee died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born July 26, 1916, in Morgan County to Edward Posey and Cynthia Youngblood Posey. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Bobby McAbee of Athens, Jackie McAbee of Decatur and Thurman McAbee of Huntsville; fire daughters, Glenda Knighten and Pat White, both of Hartselle, Debbie Ledlow of Somerville, Dorothy Rachal of Chicago and Mary Jane Hopper of Decatur; 24 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Nick Ledlow, Darrell Hart, Jason Hart, Scott Boyer, Patrick Boyer, Keith Knighten, Jerry Posey and Jimmy Posey.

Sirlena Wells Strayhand

Funeral for Sirlena Wells Strayhand, 90, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Hartselle, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Hartselle with the Rev Carrie Douglas officiating and Reynolds Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be Monday at noon in Pleasant Hill African Meth- odist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Prattville with the Rev. Conway Spears officiating. The body will be in the church one hour before the burial Monday.

Mrs. Strayhand died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at her daughter's home in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Dec. 13, 1910, in Autauga County to Mattie Johnson Wells and Henry Wells. She attended Autauga County High School. She was the widow of the Rev. James Strayhand, who pastored churches in Athens, Moulton, Cedar Lake, Courtland, Hartselle, Russellville, Selma, Thomasville and Bradenton, Fla. Survivors include one son, James W. Strayhand of Copley, Ohio; five daughters, Patricia Fullard of Kansas City, Mo., Jennie Orr of Akron, Ohio, Glenda McGregor of Hartselle, Annie Hudson of Charlotte, N.C., and Sirlena Gooden of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Cedric Fullard, Victor McGregor, Clarence Gooden Jr., Kenneth Fullard, Davey Atkins and Freddie Hudson.

William Hilbert Weaver Sr.

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for William Hilbert Weaver Sr., 87, of Summerford Nursing Home, Falkville, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rock Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Hanvey and the Rev. Jessie Estes officiating.

Burial will be in Oden Ridge Cemetery near Eva. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 9 at Peck Funeral Home. The body will be in the church one hour before the service Sunday.

Mr. Weaver died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born April 20, 1914, in Morgan County to Beatrice Holmes Weaver and Virgil Lafayette Weaver. He was a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church and a farmer. He was the widower of Zona Mason Weaver, the father of the late Lafayette Weaver, and the brother of the late Hilda Weaver Pellowski.

Survivors include one son, William H. Weaver Jr. of Mineral Bluff, Ga.; two daughters, Margaret Smith of Eva and Elaine Bennett of Danville; one sister, Wilda Tanner of Eva; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Lee Bennett, Monte Bennett, Teddy Gorton, Dicky Weaver, Gregg Weaver and Ricky Weaver.

Kathleen Garner Terry

Funeral for Kathleen Garner Terry, 85, of Decatur will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Maynard officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 4 to 6 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Terry died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Giles County, Tenn., to Addie Garner and Amos Garner. She was a member of Oak Park Church of God. She was the widow of John Henry Terry, who died in 1992.

Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Rutherford and Shelby Hill, both of Somerville, Jane Miller of Decatur and Gwen Ballentine of Priceville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Roy Borden, Bill Little, David Powell, Jerry Vandiver, Randy McDaniel and Eddie Dean Borden.

Louise Blankenship Thomas

HARTSELLE -- Graveside service for Louise Blankenship Thomas, 93, of Hartselle will be today at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Cemetery with Chris Pressnell officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Thomas died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 9, 1908, in Morgan County to Cora Leeman Blankenship and Robert Lee Blankenship. She was a homemaker, a member of New Center Baptist Church and a foster grandparent with the Morgan County school system.

Survivors include one son, Danny Allen Thomas of Decatur; two daughters, Dorothy Murphy Lott of Falkville and Joyce Melson of Hartselle; one brother, Robert Blankenship of Huntsville; two sisters, Florence Moebes and Aline Sims, both of Decatur; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Murphy, Barry Murphy, Buddy Murphy, Alan Melson, Jeff Vaughn, Steve Legg, Adam Vaughn and Charles Atkins.

John Marvin Barronton
CULLMAN -- Funeral for John Marvin Barronton, 91, of Cullman was to be today at 11 a.m. at Etha Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Ledlow officiating.

Burial was to be in the adjoining cemetery with Moss Service Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Barronton died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at his home. He was born July 5, 1910, in Georgia. He was a retired farmer and a member and deacon of Etha Baptist Church, and a member of the Simcoe Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Mae Drake Barronton; two daughters, Sylvia Burns and Betty Thompson; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Dora Lee Callahan

ATHENS -- Funeral for Dora Lee Callahan, 101, of Athens will be Tuesday at noon at McConnell Funeral Home with James Wallace officiating.

Burial will be in Bottoms Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Callahan died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born Feb. 11, 1900, in Kentucky. A resident of Limestone County most of her life, she was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church. She was the widow of Jeff D. Callahan.

Survivors include one daughter, Thelma C. Ruf; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Leon Ruf, Donnie Ruf, Harold Ruf, David E. Ruf III and Steve Lovett.
