Susie Mae Colquitt Elliott

Funeral for Susie Mae Colquitt Elliott, 84, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Saint Stephens Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Lewis officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Memorial Gardens with Sharpley Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Elliott died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born June 5, 1917, in Morgan County to Claude Colquitt and Minnie Mitchell Colquitt. She was a member of Saint Stephens and worked 35 years as a nurse at Decatur General, Baugh-Wiley-Smith hospitals and Parkway Medical Center. She retired from Parkway. She was the widow of Langston Elliott Sr., mother of the late Langston Elliott Jr. and John Thomas "Tony" Elliott, and sister of the late Mattie Horton, Rosie Powers, Lottie Rankins, George Colquitt and Claudie D. Colquitt.

Survivors include four sons, Claude Elliott of Hartselle, Lorenzo Elliott of Huntsville, Larry Elliott of Madison and Anthony Elliott of Marlboro, Md.; one daughter, Shirley Elliott of Decatur; 30 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Margaret 'Maggie' Fromhold

CULLMAN -- Funeral for Margaret "Maggie" Fromhold, 71, of Cullman will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin McGrath officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Moss Service Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight starting at 6 at the funeral home. Rosary will be said at 7:30.

Mrs. Fromhold died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born April 1, 1930, in Birmingham to Lee Frances Schlosser and Louise Barker Schlosser. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a bookkeeper and worked more than 20 years with the auxiliary of Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of John W. Fromhold Jr., and the sister of the late Fred "Buddy" Schlosser.

Survivors include one son, Michael Fromhold of Cullman; one daughter, Patricia Hoge-land of Bremen; one sister, Mary Louise Hyatt of Moulton; and four grandchildren.

Hollis Johnson Sr.

TUSCUMBIA -- Funeral for Hollis Johnson Sr., 94, of Sheffield was Sunday at Morrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Mitchell officiating.

Burial was in Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Sunbridge Nursing Home-Shoals. He was born Nov. 26, 1907, in Decatur. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sheffield. He was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority and was business agent for Machinist Local No. 1189 and No. 65. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 503 for more than 50 years. He was the brother of the late Hildreth Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Francis Irene Johnson; three sons, William Hollis Johnson Jr., Mike Johnson and David Johnson, all of Sheffield; one daughter, Lynne Weaver of Tuscumbia; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Jordan Johnson, Ryan Weaver, Ken Blackstock, Ian Sanford, John Adams and Presley Williams.

Margaret Ellen McCay

TUSCUMBIA -- Funeral for Margaret Ellen McCay, 85, of Sheffield was to be today at 1 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home with Stan Dean officiating.

Graveside service was to be at 3 p.m. in Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur. The family was to receive friends today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. McCay died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. She was born June 16, 1916, in Morgan County. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Mrs. McCay, her husband, Roy McCay, and her sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and J.O. Roper, opened the original Southland Restaurant in Sheffield in 1950, which still is in operation. She was the widow of Roy McCay and the sister of the late Sarah Roper and the late Frances McCaghtren.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Roy McCay of Sheffield; two daughters, Phyllis McCay Robinson of Muscle Shoals and Linda McCay Clement of Sheffield; one sister, Dorothy Justice Crew of Rockford; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be Tommy McCaghtren, Jerry Mc-Caghtren, Bill Crew, Shawn Brown, Dean Shaw and Joe Scott.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

William Chester Newton

ATHENS -- Funeral for William Chester Newton, 62, of Lexington will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Don Miller and Carroll Sutton officiating.

Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Newton died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at his home. He was born May 22, 1939, in Lauderdale County to Reeder Newton and Elsie Newton. He was a pipefitter and a plumber for 35 years. He was a minister for 13 years and a member of Oxford Church of Christ for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Dison Newton; one son, William "Bud" Newton of Lexington; four daughters, Connie Newton of Lexington, Carol Legg of Anderson, and Kaye Lard and Janet Ezekiel, both of Florence; two brothers, Charles Newton of Green hill and Robert Newton of Barton; three sisters, Ann Jackson of Lester, Jean Reeder of Decatur and Martha Ellis of Birmingham; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Luke Reeder, Allen Dison, Bobby Dison, Larry Newton, Dexter Newton and Malcolm Newton.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Shoals.

Daisy Barber
HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Daisy Barber, 96, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Rachel Westmoreland officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Barber died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Falkville Healthcare Center. She was born Jan. 13, 1905, in Texas to John Terrell and Georgia Wilhoite Terrell. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was the widow of Houston Barber.

Survivors include two sons, J.H. Barber and Harold Barber, both of Hartselle; four daughters, Pauline Evans and Betty Brookover, both of Hartselle, Edith Pearson of Decatur and Bobbie White of Danville; one brother, Hammond Terrell of Albertville; one sister, Mary Tapscott of Kissimmee, Fla.; 24 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Terry Barber, Allen Jernigan, William Niles, Michael Evans, James Steele and Wayne Brookover.

Glenda Chapman

HANCEVILLE -- Funeral for Glenda Chapman, 64, of Hanceville was to be today at 2 p.m. at Hanceville Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Gambill officiating.

Burial was to be in Garden City Cemetery.

Mrs. Chapman died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at her home. She was born Nov. 24, 1937, in Garden City to A. Burnell Hopper and Ruby Kelley Hopper. She was a longtime antique dealer and a member of Garden City First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Stephanie Hancock of Hanceville; two sisters, Jimmie Rolin of Falkville and Leneta Pender of Garden City; and five grandchildren.

Grace Baker 'Granny' Fowler

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Grace Baker "Granny" Fowler, 86, of Somerville will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with Greg Legg officiating.

Burial will be in Blue Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fowler died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at her home. She was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Morgan County to James Dallas Baker and Novie Dalia Chunn Baker. She was a homemaker and a member of Somerville Church of Christ. She was widow of William P. Fowler and mother of the late Carolyn Fowler Saint.

Survivors include one son, Carlton Fowler of Somerville; one daughter, Mary Maxwell of Somerville; two brothers, Hollis Myers Baker of Columbus, Ga., and Joe Baker of Hamilton, Ga.; three sisters, Betty Highbaugh of Highpoint, N.C., Annette Norton of Marietta, Ga., and Gayle Couch of Lovingston, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Maxwell, Wayne Speegle, Ray Saint, Tim Bradford, Tony Fuqua and Chuck Clemons.

Dorothy Jean Harris

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Dorothy Jean Harris, 74, of Falkville will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Weaver officiating.

Burial will be in Salem Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Harris died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1927, in Madison County to Charles F. Massey and Willie Parsons Massey. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Edward E. Harris; two daughters, Betty Hampton of Falkville and Linda Cox of Lewisburg, Tenn.; one brother, Charles F. Massey of Hartselle; one sister, Evelyn Segars of Hartselle; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Gary Miller, Jeff Harris, Willie Harris, Johnny Harris, Jay Harris, Rusty Harris, Jason Harris and Truman Pitman.

Lillie Johnson Hood

MOULTON -- Funeral for Lillie Johnson Hood, 91, of Moulton will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Amos Hood officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hood died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. She was born May 18, 1910, in Lawrence County to Pelham Dallas Johnson and Minnie Ferguson Johnson. She was retired as a seamstress from Moulton Cleaners and was the widow of Floyd Jackson Hood. Mrs. Hood was the former owner of Dixie Cleaners.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Kicker of Tuscumbia and Betty Howard of Decatur; two sisters, Mable Hood of Town Creek and Audrey Rainey of Decatur; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Randy Mullican, Stacy Mullican, Jeff Howard, Brandon Hood, Patrick Hood and Daniel Owens.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Dr. James Samuel Martin

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Dr. James Samuel Martin, 80, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Hartselle Church of Christ with Bob Clardy, Charles Curtis and Phillip Hines officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Dr. Martin died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at his home. He was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Lawrence County to Edward King Martin and Arrie Wear Martin. He was an elder and member of Hartselle Church of Christ. He served in the United States Air Force and was a Hartselle Rotary Club member. He was an optometrist for 50 years in Hartselle and a member of the Optometry Association of Alabama. He also was active with the Hartselle Lions Club and was a former member of the Hartselle Hospital Board. He was a past president of the F.E. Burleson Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" L. Martin; one son, James S. Martin Jr. of Hartselle; two daughters, Betty Martin Holland of Birmingham and Susan Martin Talmadge of Hartselle; one brother, William Allen Martin of Opelika; one sister, Ruby Martin Hill of Decatur; five grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Nick Holland, J.C. Martin, Hogan Martin, Chris Martin, Ron Holland and Rick Talmadge.

Memorials may be made to the Special Olympics.

Charles Thornton

ATHENS -- Funeral for Charles Thornton, 71, of Harvest will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. James Toone and the Rev. Douglas McCurry officiating.

Burial will be in Ford's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Thornton died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. He was born Aug. 31, 1930, in Madison to Foster Shields Thornton and Zellie Toone Thornton. He was retired as District 4 representative for the Madison County Commission.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Thornton; two daughters, Sandra Maples of New Hope and Gail McCurry of Athens; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Pete Tuck, Charles Sweet, Gene Tuck, Martie Montgomery, J.C. Prater, Lawrence Williams and Grady Abernathy.

Freeman Wallace

MOULTON -- Funeral for Freeman C. Wallace, 79, of Moulton will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Liberty Methodist Church with Donald Wallace officiating.

Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery with Elliott Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Wallace died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at West Morgan Health Care Center. He was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Lawrence County to Herman Wallace and Letha Hightower Wallace. He was retired from the Alabama Highway Department's traffic division and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Wallace also was a member of Berea Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Wallace of Decatur and Donald Wallace of Shirley, Ark.; two daughters, Sandra Wallace of Moulton and Phyllis Villagrana of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Otis Wallace of Moulton and Odes Wallace of Lawton, Mich.; three sisters, Josephine Sandlin, May Sandlin and Marie Jordan, all of Moulton; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
