ATHENS -- Funeral arrangements for Lucille Melton, 84, of Madison, who died today, Dec. 29, 1999, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center, will be announced by Spry Funeral Home.

Reuben C. Payne
83, retired city employee

Graveside service for Reuben C. Payne, 83, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Decatur City Cemetery with the Rev. J.D. Smith officiating and Reynolds Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Payne died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home.

He was born Sept. 30, 1916, in Riverton. He retired from the city of Decatur, where he worked for the Sanitation Department.

He is survived by one son, Reuben Payne Jr. of Huntsville; three daughters, Wanda Payne Rhodes of Huntsville, and Ellen Payne Davis and Diane Payne Forney, both of Decatur; one brother, Mack Payne of Barton; one sister, Earlene Shelton of Barton; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Savoy Robinson

Funeral for Savoy Robinson, 82, of Decatur will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis Jordan officiating.

Burial will be in Sykes Cemetery.

Mr. Robinson died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Parkway Medical Center Hospital. He was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Madison County to Willie and Sarah Robinson.

He is survived by nephews and nieces, including a niece who was his guardian, Sarah Chairs of Decatur.

Rebecca Shedd

ATHENS -- Funeral arrangements for Rebecca Anerton Shedd, 68, of Cullman, who died today, Dec. 29, 1999, at Cullman Regional Medical Center, will be announced by Spry Funeral Home.

Lowell Price Shelton
87, farmer

MOULTON -- Funeral for Lowell Price Shelton, 87, of Trinity will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Sivley Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Shelton died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home. He was born April 29, 1912, in Lawrence County. He was a farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Shelton; five sons, Lowell D. Shelton, O.S. Shelton, Royce Shelton, Bud Shelton and Marty Shelton, all of Lawrence County; three daughters, Reba Bundrick of Lawrence County, B.B. Coyne of Birmingham and Mary Reynolds of Talladega; one brother, the Rev. M.V. Shelton of Birmingham; five sisters, Eula Stroup of Decatur, Eva McMinemon of Somerville and Mildred Gray, Violet Heaps and Madalyn Terry, all of Lawrence County; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.Pallbearers will be Jeff Ladyman, Kenneth Reynolds Jr., Scott Shelton, Kevin Reynolds, Neal Pope and Brien Brown.

Mary Ozell Sowell
88, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mary Ozell Sowell, 88, of U.S. 72 East, Athens will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with Eddie Gooch and Barry Dunn officiating.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sowell died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Dec. 11, 1911, in Limestone County. She was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She was the widow of W.F. Sowell and sister of the late Leovis Whitt and Claude Coats.

She is survived by one son, Frank Sowell of Athens; three daughters, Barbara Meadows, Janet Prater and Sandra Holland, all of Athens; one brother, Billy Coats of Athens; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Cambridge United Methodist Church, c/o Morris Hasting, 15185 Pike Road, Athens, AL 35611.

Colleen N. Toohey
74, homemaker

TACOMA, Wash. -- Memorial service for Colleen N. Toohey, 74, was to be today at 5 p.m. at St. Theresa's Church in Federal Way, Wash.

Mrs. Toohey, a former Decatur resident, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, in Federal Way. She was born Oct. 19, 1925, to Loretta and Austin Curren. She attended Cathedral High School and graduated from Presentation School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was involved in volunteering at various school and civic organizations with more than 35 years of service to the PTA, Catholic Solidarity Group and St. Ann Parish.

She was the mother of the late Margaret Ann Toohey and sister of the late Gordon Curren.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Toohey; two sons, Bob Toohey Jr. of Tuscaloosa and Dan Toohey of Minneapolis; and seven daughters, Kathy Hardin of Tacoma, Wash., Terri Laskis of Madison, Wis., Mary Alice Ostby of Kenosha, Wis., Sara Troupe of Federal Way, Colleen Gutierrez of Enumclaw, Wash., Elizabeth Crow of Tacoma, Wash., and Jennifer Chaves of Seattle; and 26 grandchildren.

Frances Aline Walls
65, retired cashier

ATHENS -- Funeral for Frances Aline Walls, 65, of Huntsville was to be today at 2 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Ricky Lowery and the Rev. J.D. Burgess officiating.

Burial was to be in Huntsville Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Walls died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at home. She was born July 23, 1934, in Limestone County to Clarence and Minnie Nelson Hilliard.

A resident of Huntsville since 1955, she retired as a cashier from Winn Dixie and was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.

She is survived by one sister, Lillian Morrison of Athens.

Clara Sparkman Wynn
93, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Clara Sparkman Wynn, 93, of Hartselle will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Fader officiating.

Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends at 5848 Norris Mill Road today from 11 a.m. until the service. Mrs. Wynn was born Jan. 5, 1906, in Morgan County to Fred Benjamin Sparkman and Ora Mae Sparkman.

She died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Lou Wynn Long of Hartselle; one brother, Franklin Sparkman of Gardendale; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Kirby, Alton Johnson, Jim Sparkman, Bobby Roberson, Marion McAbee and Oliver Townson.

Berte Woodham Birdsong
98, homemaker

Funeral for Berte Woodham Birdsong, 98, of Decatur will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth A. Dunivant officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Birdsong died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Oct. 5, 1901, in Marshall County to Amanda Carroll and Ulysses Grant Woodham. She worked for Maison Morgan Department Store for 15 years and was a member of First United Methodist, where she was a member of the Louise Robinson Sunday school class. She was honored by the state House of Representatives in 1996 and was named Republican Woman of the Year statewide in 1964. She was the widow of James Claude Birdsong.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Birdsong Blackburn of Decatur and Gay Birdsong Mayo of Wilmington, N.C.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Ed Garrett, Tom Evans, W.O. Lipscomb, John Thornton, Jim Gregory and David White.

Members of Nabors Circle of First United Methodist will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Permanent Endowment Fund of First United Methodist Church, 805 Canal St. N.E., Decatur, AL 35601.

Violet Dorothy Briscoe
69, waitress

ARAB -- Funeral for Violet Dorothy Briscoe, 69, of Somerville was to be today at 2 p.m. at Arab Memorial Chapel with Ray Humphries officiating.

Burial was to be in West Point Cemetery.

Mrs. Briscoe died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Morgan County to Dow and Meter Williams Whisenant. She was a waitress at LeCroy's.

She is survived by two sons, Ken Thomas of Somerville and John Hugh Briscoe of Joppa; four daughters, Pam Owen, Frankie Jo Lamb and Wanda Jean Malone, all of Somerville, and Beth Christian of Joppa; three brothers, Paul Haynes of Michigan, Jack Morrow of Tennessee and Joe Morrow of Somerville; two sisters, Opal Bryant of Center Grove and Margaret Taylor of Arab; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
