Elwyn Reese Irby
Band director

FLORENCE-- Funeral for Elwyn Reese Irby of Florence will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at North Wood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Parris and Rev. Tolen Whitten officiating.

Burial will be in Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery with Green view Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Irby died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999 at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Omaha, Texas. A retired school band director, he was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the No. 17 Army Band. He completed undergraduate studies at Peabody College in Nashville and received graduate degrees from the University of North Alabama. He started the first bands at Lauderdale County High School, Hazlewood High School and Colbert Heights High School. He was band director at Central High School until he retired in 1984. He was a member of North Wood United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mardia B. Irby; one son, James E.R. Irby of Athens; and one brother, Robert S. Irby of Nashville.

Pallbearers will be Gene Pickard, Robert Kephart, Bill Jones, John Ed Irby, Pat Stegall, James Price , Glenn Shelton and Tommy Beadle.

Members of the Homebuilder Sunday school class and Goodwill Club will be honorary pallbearers.

Clarence Junior 'Dude' Porter
74, retired heavy equipment operator

LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. -- Funeral for Clarence Junior "Dude" Porter, 74, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends today at 11 at the funeral home.

Mr. Porter died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Parkway Medical Center Hospital. He was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Lawrence County, Tenn. to Clarence and Bertha Porter. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Morgan County. He was the father of the late Kenneth Porter.

He is survived by his wife, Ora Mae Porter; one daughter, Janice Wagner of Hartselle; four brothers, David Porter and C.M. Porter, both of Michigan, Cecil Porter of Lawrenceburg and Clyde Porter of Leoma, Tenn; four sisters, Ethel Smith of St. Joseph, Tenn., Maggie Sue Johnston, Inez Smith and Mildred Walker, all of Lawrenceburg; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Bessie Powers
86, retired teacher

ATHENS -- Funeral for Bessie Powers, 86, of Elkmont will be today at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Bobby Ogles and Ronnie Holt officiating.

Burial will be in Hodges Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Powers died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at her home. She was born May 21, 1913, in Limestone County. She was a retired teacher for Limestone County Schools and a member of Pettusville Church of Christ. She was the widow of Almon Powers.

She is survived nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Harold Holt, Ricky Watkins, Eddie Shores, James H. Wright, Shawn Holt and Ron Mitchell.

James Cecil Prestage
77, statistician

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for James Cecil Prestage, 77, of Hartselle will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Huntsville. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Prestage died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at his home. He was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Mississippi. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a statistician at Redstone Arsenal.

He is survived by his wife, Theo Prestage; one brother, Paul Prestage of Red Bay; and two sisters, Bernice Works of Red Bay and Vera Bostick of Belmont, Miss.

Pallbearers will be Bill Bagby, Frank Burks, Gail Dunn, Earl Jacobs, Jimmy Tilley and Alex Whetstone.

Edward William Rice
86, Redstone Arsenal retiree

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Edward William Rice, 86, of Elkmont will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Bush Cemetery in New Hope with the Rev. Harold S. Daniel officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Rice died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at National Health Care Center in Pulaski, Tenn. He was born July 5, 1913, in Marshall County. A member of Galilee Baptist Church, he was retired from Redstone Arsenal and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Rice Daniel of Elkmont; one brother, John W. Rice of Brooksville; three sisters, Loma Branum of Cedar Bluff, Alice Baker of Guntersville and Lillian Glover of Akron, Ohio; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Cynthia 'Kathy' Spiller
49, cook

Memorial service for Cynthia "Kathy" Spiller, 49, of Trinity will be today at 4 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Caudle officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Indiana.

Mrs. Spiller died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in Decatur. She was born Oct. 6, 1950, in Joliet, Ill. She was a cook at J&L Shell and Champion International canteen, and a member of Trinity Baptist Church She was the widow of Daniel Spiller.

She is survived by two sons, William Spiller of Cape Coral, Fla., and Daniel Spiller II of Lake Station, Ind.; her mother, Kay Moody of Lake Station; two grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Etta Mae Brackeen
92, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Etta Mae Brackeen, 92, of Athens will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Hiram Hutto and Bill Hall officiating.

Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brackeen died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born Sept. 11, 1907, in Lauderdale County. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. She was the widow of Carlous Brackeen and H. Morgan Brackeen, the mother of the late Joan Lovell and the stepmother of the late Tonis O. Brackeen, Paul Brackeen and Flavel Brackeen.

She is survived by five sons, Glenn Brackeen, Wayne Brackeen and Keith Brackeen, all of Athens, Phillip Brackeen of Washington, Ill., and Nathan Brackeen of Wilsonville; four daughters, Elna Toone, Yu-Vawn Blakely, Cletis Brooks and Cornelia Pepper, all of Athens; one stepson, Lovell Brackeen of Los Angeles; one stepdaughter, Essie Belle Bates of Athens; one brother, Otha Lynn of Athens; three sisters, Ellaree Jackson, Mary Dean Meadows and Verta Blankenship, all of Athens; 35 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Lelma Aline Harp
86, homemaker

Funeral for Lelma Aline Harp, 86, of Danville will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Hill officiating.

Burial will be in Uptain's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Harp died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Morgan County to Elkin Roberts and Nora Rackley Roberts. She was a homemaker and a member of Uptain's Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, Bobby Harp of Danville; one daughter, Geraldine Morgan of Danville; one sister, Mildred Harp of Decatur; two brothers, R.B. Roberts and James Howard Roberts, both of Decatur; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Melba JuanitaLowery
74, retired title clerk, Goddard Ford

TRINITY -- Funeral for Melba Juanita Lowery, 74, of Danville will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Charles Littrell and Clifford Sims officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lowery died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born March 5, 1925, in Lawrence County to James A. Watson and Vera Hill Watson. She was a member of Danville Road Church of Christ and was the widow of John F. Lowery. She was retired from Goddard Ford, where she worked as a title clerk.

She is survived by two sons, Alan Lowery of Green town, Ind., and David Lowery of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Kenneth Watson of Moulton and Benton Watson of Trinity; three sisters, Rena Faye Sapp of Moulton, Ruth Tritt of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Barbara Blanton of Athens; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Gary Sapp, J.E. Turner, Greg Gann, Larry Watson, Jerry Coffey and Fletcher McKelvey.

Mary Sue Sutton Maddox
88, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mary Sue Sutton Maddox, 88, of Athens was to be today at 11 a.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Bill Irby officiating.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mrs. Maddox died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 2, 1912, in Lauderdale County. She was a member of Hobbs Street Church of Christ. She was the widow of William Maddox.

She is survived by two daughters, Malane zurBurg of Athens and Linda Edwards of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be James Rogers, Steve Rogers, Donnie Rogers, Kevin Paseur, Richard Edwards and Andy Culver.

Mary McGlone
92, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Mary McGlone, 92, of Moulton was to be today at noon at Lawrence Funeral Home with Larry Crumpton officiating.

Burial will be in Rutherford Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the funeral home.

Mrs. McGlone died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born Sept. 17, 1907, in Lawrence County, to James and Jane Flannagin. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by cousins.

Pallbearers will be Gwyn Dutton, Brad Dutton, Billy Montgomery, Randall LouAllen, Loyle Dunlap and Charles Garner.

Rolan W. Royer
79, World War II veteran

Funeral for Rolan W. Royer, 79, of Trinity will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Myron Mooney officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Royer died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born July 20, 1920, in Morgan County. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and participated in D-Day operations. He retired from Wolverine Tube.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Royer; one son, Ray Royer of Knoxville; one sister, Mildred Mooney of Trinity; one brother, Ramon Royer of Decatur; and two grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Wendell Denny, Burl Wallace, Junior Wallace, Jim Cockrum, Richard Kelso, Marvin Terry Jr., Oscar Kent Jr. and David Levi.
