Hubert Roy Mullenix

GORDO - "God saw he was getting tired and a cure was not to be; so he put his arms around him, and whispered, "Come with me." With Tearful eyes we watched him suffer, and saw him fade away; Although we loved him dearly, We could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard hands to rest; God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best!"

Hubert Roy Mullenix, 83, 18522 Upper Columbus Road, died September 15, 2001 at Northport Medical Center. Services will be held at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, September 18, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Hershel Owen and Rev. Robert Pate officiating. Burial will follow in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Skelton Funeral Home of Reform is directing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Effie Findley Mullenix; infant son, James Roy Mullenix and a brother, John W. Mullenix.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Effie Mae Driver Mullenix of Gordo; daughter, Lucretia M. Jones (James Roy) of Buhl; son, Roy H. Mullenix (Peggy) of Gordo; sisters, Ola Belle Smith, Gordo, Mary E. Robinson of Mobile, Catherine Shirley of Gordo and Emma J. (Tootsie) Ayers of Holt; brothers, Floyd Mullenix of Echola, Clifton Mullenix of Gordo, Fred Mullenix of Coker, Searcy Mullenix of Gordo; grandchildren, Tina M. Presley, Tammy M. Howell (Bryan), Steve Jones (Angie), Scott Jones (Kelley) and Angela J. Robertson (Tony); 11 great grandchildren.

Mr. Mullenix was a member of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Gordo, a retired foreman with the Tuscaloosa County Road Department and a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army.

Pallbearers will be Randall Mullenix, Kenneth Shirley, Gary Mullenix, Freddie Smith, Mike Shirley, Carl Mullenix, Harold Mullenix and Dennis Shirley.

Honorary pallbearers are members of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Gordo, Friends of Echola and Elrod Communities, Caretaker Sheila Matthews.

Kathleen Snow

NORTHPORT - Kathleen Snow, 65, 523 25th Ave., died September 14, 2001 at her residence. Services will be held at Magnolia Chapel of Northport on Monday, September 17, at 10 a.m., with Sister Vicki Avery officiating. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Fayette. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home of Northport is directing.

She is preceded in death by her father, Henry Lee Perkins and brother, Olan Perkins.

Survivors include her daughter, Kimberly Diane Snow, Northport; sons, Earnest Lee Perkins, Dade City , Fla., David Wayne Perkins, Northport, James Odis Perkins, Northport, Jackson Snow, Foster s; sister, Alice Faye Edgeworth, Coker; brother, Robert Lee Perkins, Fayette; mother, Mertie Collins, Northport; 15 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be James Perkins, Wayne Perkins, Tim Kay, Kenneth Edgeworth, Larry Edgeworth and Stan Fisher.

Honorary pallbearers are Doctors and Staff DCH Cancer Center, Hospice of West Alabama and Victorious Life Church.

Frankie M. Horton

VERNON - Frankie M. Horton, 87, Care Center of Vernon, died September 11, 2001 at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be held at Holly Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, September 15, 2001 at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Holly Grove Cemetery, Millport. The body will lie in state from 12 noon til service time. Visitation will be Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Dowdle Funeral Home of Millport is directing.

Ben Barrow

Ben Barrow, age 14, died September 9, 2001, at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. today, at the Lamar County High School gymnasium. Chandler Funeral Home of Vernon will be directing.

Greg Goree

NORTHPORT - Greg Goree, 38, of 15479 Tropic Drive, died October 2, 2001 at his residence. Complete arrangements will be announced later by Sunset Funeral Home.

Timothy Hood McAllister

NORTHPORT - Timothy Hood McAllister, infant, 11105 Dunn's Camp Rd., died October 1, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at Mitchell Cemetery, Benovola, Pickens County, today at 11 a.m., with Sydney Allen officiating.

He is survived by his parents, Gina Josey and Tim McAllister; grandparents, Pat and R.L. Rockart's, Bill Josey, Jean and Judd Griffin.

Lynn Griffin Safley

TUSCALOOSA - Lynn Griffin Safley, age 66, died October 6, 2001, at Estes Park Manor in Northport. Services will be 11 a.m. today, Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home Northport with Rev. Dewey Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Oregonia Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home Northport directing. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Ola Bell Griffin; brothers, Herman Collins and Clinton Collins.

She is survived by sons, Vance Griffin Safley of San Antonio, Texas and David Noble Safley of Waukegan, Ill.; sisters, Anice Jones of Tuscaloosa and Mary Lou Fondren of Northport; brothers, Stuart Griffin of Duncanville; grandchildren, Dustin Safley and Rachael Safley.

Nada Lynn was reunited with our Lord this past Saturday evening and rejoices in His eternal Kingdom. The family takes comfort that Jesus called her to return to her spiritual home quickly and peacefully.

Ms. Safley grew up in Tuscaloosa and was Benjamin and Ola Bell Griffin’s youngest daughter. After studying journalism at the University of Alabama, she moved to Texas to work as a writer for radio.

Lynn was a devoted and loving mother of two sons, which were her pride and joy. Amongst the many gifts that she nurtured within her children, was her passion for reading and joy of writing.

Pallbearers will be Larry Jones, Dale Jones, Mack Jones, Wiley Hudson, David Safley and James Collins.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Tuscaloosa Children’s Center, 520 32nd Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.

Elmer Daniel Kizziah

VANCE - Elmer Daniel Kizziah, 65, died last month, while out of state. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, at Enterprise Baptist Church in Cedar Cove.

The eulogy will be delivered by his nephew, Nick Kizziah. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Survivors include his daughters, Reba F. Williams of Jemison, Tammie L. Jones of Jemison; sons, Eddie D. Kizziah of Tuscaloosa, Robbie D. Kizziah of Bessemer, James D. Kizziah of Jemison; brothers, John Kizziah, Richard Kizziah, Mick Kizziah, Rolan Kizziah, Terry Kizziah all of Tuscaloosa County. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.

He was a Korean War Veteran in the US Navy, also he was a longtime owner and operator of Elmer's Grocery and Barber Shop on Hwy. 11. May he rest in peace.

Clarence E. (Bob) Herren

BIRMINGHAM - Bob Herren, 70, 8400 3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, passed away on October 8, 2001 at VA Medical Center in Birmingham. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Whites Chapel Church of Christ, Bazemore with Dr. Frank Battles officiating. His remains, at his request, have been donated and accepted at UAB for research and study.

Bob is survived by Bettie Hayden Herren and son, Mark Hayden; Jurl Dean Ellis Herren, mother of his children, LaVetta (John) Puissant, Kermit (Eunice) Herren, Kaye (Charles) Cook; eight grandchildren- Laura (Jonathon) Stewart, Wayne (Mariola) Roberts, Chad Herren, Brian Herren, Jamie Herren, Rhona (Chris) Clark, Ryan Davis, Ragan Davis; three great-grandchildren- Cody Rogers, Analicia Roberts, Emma Grace Clark; his sister, Delene (Boyd) Killingsworth, one brother, Duncan Herren, Jr., 19 nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.

Born July 19, 1931 in Walker County. He graduated Hubbertville High School and University of Alabama. He served in the United States Air Force and worked as a civil engineer in the service as well as for E.I. DuPont de Nemoors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the paralyzed Veterans of America, 7 Mill Brook Road, Wilton, NH 03086 or The American Heart Association, 7272 Green ville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231-4596.

Dan Woodrow Frierson

BIG SANDY- Dan Woodrow Frierson, age 81, 15880 Mink Slide Road, died Saturday, October 6, 2001 at his residence. Services will be Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Sinai Methodist Church with burial following in Cedar Memorial Park, Tuscaloosa, AL with Williams Service Funeral Home directing.

The body will lie in state one hour prior to service.

Frank William Welch, Sr.

NORTHPORT - Frank William Welch, Sr., age 69, died October 8, 2001. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Ciriello Funeral Home, Akron, Ohio. Pastor Bob Stephens of Grace Baptist Church, Akron, Ohio officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Chapel Cemetery with Ciriello Funeral Home directing. Visitation is one hour prior to the services at Ciriello Funeral Home. Memory Chapel Funeral Home handling local arrangements.

He is preceded in death by his parents Twila Welch and John Welch.

Survivors are his wife Dorothy N. Welch, Northport; daughter Pamela G. Limric; two sons, Frank W. Welch, Jr. (Linda), Joseph M. Welch; sisters, Vivian Roxberry, Amanda Garrison, Marie Smith and Ruth Lemmon; brothers, James Welch, Lester Welch and Mark Welch. Grandchildren Shawn Welch, Shari Paul, Scott Paul. Many loved nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Devoted husband and loving father, grandfather.

Pallbearers will be Scott Paul, Lester Welch, James Welch, Sr., Mark Welch, William Garrison, Ralph Lemmon, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers are Rhonda Brinyark, Tommy Brinyark, Susie Bosch, Jimmy Bosch, John and Susan Nicholson, Hospice of West Alabama, Maggie Wells, church family of First Freewill Baptist Church, Northport, Alabama, Tuscaloosa Radiology Clinic employees

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama, Gideons.

Paul Clifford Miller

GUIN - Paul Clifford Miller, age 33, died Monday, October 8, 2001. Services will be today at 11:00 a.m. at Miles Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery with Miles Funeral Home of Winfield directing.

Luvenia B. Hannible

TUSCALOOSA - Luvenia B. Hannible, age 80 of 2027 45th Court, died October 5, 2001 at her residence. Services will be held Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Druid Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park with Druid Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Friday October 12, 2001 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Tommy Steele

HEMPSTEAD, NY - Tommy Steele, 89, a Sumter County native, died October 8, 2001 at South Nassau Communities Hospital. Services will be held Saturday at the Soul Chapel United Methodist Church in Geiger at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the Rancher Cemetery. Visitation is today from 6-8 at the mortuary and an hour prior to service at the church with McInnis Mortuary of Livingston directing.

Dennis Riddle, Jr.

TUSCALOOSA - Dennis Riddle, Jr., 71 yrs., of 816 Cherokee Avenue died October 9, 2001 in DCH Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 13, 2001, at the Glorious Pentecostal Church. Rev. Cox will officiate. Burial will follow in the Parham Ridge Perpetual Care Cemetery, Foster s., with Rollins' Mortuary directing. He will lie in state at the church one hour prior to funeral time.
