Ruby Lucile Gardner
COLUMBUS, MISS. - Ruby Lucile Gardner, age 81, of 2407 23rd Avenue N., died January 15, 2002 at Baptist Memorial GTR Hospital.
Services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from Providence Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery / Pickens County, AL. Visitation is Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon at Dowdle Funeral Home. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Dowdle Funeral Home of Millport is directing.

Rayburn Douglas Guy
GREENSBORO - Rayburn Douglas Guy, age 60, died January 16, 2002 in Phoenix City, Alabama. Funeral services will be announced later by Memory Chapel Funeral Home.

Howard Hartman
CARMICHAEL - Howard Hartman, noted lecturer, engineering consultant, and author died in Carmichael, California January 12, 2002. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, daughter Sherilyn, son Greg and six grandchildren.
Dr. Hartman was Professor and Drummond Endowed Chair of Mining Engineering at the University of Alabama. He was Professor and Dean, School of Engineering, Vanderbilt University; Professor and Dean, School of Engineering, California State University, Sacramento; and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. Upon his retirement in 1989 he was named Professor Emeritus. He was cited in Who’s Who in America and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 17th at Carmichael Presbyterian Church. Remembrances may be made to the Parkinson Association, 900 Fulton Avenue, Sacramento, Ca 95825.

Jennie L. W. Kemp
NORTHPORT - Jennie L. W. Kemp, age 77, died January 15, 2002 at her residence. Complete funeral plans entrusted to and will be given later by Van Hoose and Steele Funeral Home.

Edith Elaine Leigh
VERNON - Edith Elaine Leigh, age 86, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at Fayette Medical Center – DCH. Services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Chandler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fellowship Cemetery of the Fellowship Baptist Church. Chandler Funeral Home is directing.

Mary Frances Haran Martin
NORTHPORT - Mary Frances Haran Martin, age 76, of 19747 Morman Road, died January 15, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with burial in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Visitation is Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Memory Chapel. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Richard R. Shamblin
NEWARK - Lt. Col. (Ret.) Richard R. Shamblin, age 82, of Newark, DE, died on Monday, January 14, 2002 at Christian Hospital, Newark, DE.
Mr. Shamblin served as a pilot in the US Air Force, retiring in 1962 after 23 years. During his military career, he served as a bomber pilot in World War II and as a pilot in the Korean Conflict. After his retirement from the Air Force,
Mr. Shamblin returned to his native Alabama where he and his late brother, Joseph Shamblin, MD, built and operated Mimosa Park County Club in Tuscaloosa. In 1970, he relocated to Delaware to take a position with Summit Airlines in Philadelphia, PA, where he retired in 1979 as vice president.
Born in Northport, AL, Mr. Shamblin was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and attended the University of Alabama prior to his military service. He remained an avid golfer throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Glenn) Shamblin, who died in 1994; a son, Michael Glenn Shamblin, who died in 2001; and a grandson, Michael G. Shamblin, Jr. He is survived by his children, Richard H. Shamblin and his wife, Linda, of Wilmington, DE; Mary Beth Boylan and her husband, Patrick, of Newark, DE; and Donna J. Shamblin of Bear, DE; daughter-in-law, Sherry L. Shamblin of Newark, DE; and 5 grandchildren, Christopher Boylan and his wife, Jennifer, Shawn Boylan, Christen, Tori, and Lauren Shamblin; and two step-grandchildren, Timothy and Robert Wheatley.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2002, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE.
Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2002 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE.

Lillian Nixon Spear
TROY - Lillian Nixon Spear, age 88, of P. O. Box 787- Elba Highway, died January 15, 2002 at Pike Manor Health Care Center. Services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. from Fair Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Atkins and Rev. Jack Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Level Methodist Cemetery, Autauga County, Alabama. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. at Kidd-Robbins Chapel. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors of Demopolis is directing.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Spear.
Survivors include her daughters, Estelle S. Money, Demopolis, Ala.; Betty S. Caples, Gadsden, Ala.; Elizabeth S. Anderson, Shady Grove, Fla.; Dorothy S. Nichols, Chickasaw, Ala.; and Jackie S. Mann, Summerfield, Fla.; son, William E. (Bo) Spear, Ocala, Fla.; sister Mattie N. Violette, Prattville, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers are staff and employees of Pike Manor Health Care Center, Troy, Alabama.

ALICEVILLE - John W. Taylor, age 75, died January 12, 2002 at Aliceville Manor Nursing Home. Services will be held Friday at 12:00 noon from Bigbee Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Visitation is today at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church Friday from 11:00 a.m. –12:00 noon. Lavender Funeral Service is directing.

Cornelius Kelly Thomas
LINDEN - Cornelius Kelly Thomas, age 103, of 28660 Alabama Hwy. 69, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. from Linden Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Myrtlewood Cemetery, Myrtlewood, Alabama with O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing.Visitation is tonight from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

ALICEVILLE - Eddie Tweedie, age 82, died January 13, 2002 at Pickens County Medical Center. Services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. from Aliceville National Guard Armory. Burial will follow in Magnolia Garden. Visitation is today at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Lavender Funeral Service is directing.

Deacon Thomas Willis, Jr.
DEMOPOLIS - Deacon Thomas Willis, Jr., age 73, passed January 16, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis, Alabama.

Ada Merriweather

EUTAW - Mrs. Ada Merriweather, age 97, died January 14, 2002, at Green e County Nursing Home. Services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2002,at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church, Mantua, Ala. Burial will follow in Mt. Herbron Cemetery, Mantua with Gandy Funeral Home of Eutaw directing. The body will lie in state in the church one hour prior to services.

Charles Elam Leverett

MARION - Charles Elam Leverett, age 88, died January 16, 2002, at Vaughan Regional Medical Center Parkway. Services will be 11 a.m. today, Marion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Home of Marion directing.

Charles W. "Bill" Kling

ROBERTSDALE - Charles W. "Bill" Kling, age 68, died January 16, 2002, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Margaret Catholic Church in Foley. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Snookie Falgout Kling; daughter, Tammy Murrey; sons, Kirk Kling and Bill Kling IV; sister Mary Joe; brother John Kling; grandchildren, Joseph Murrey, Billy Kling V, Kaley Kling, Brook Kling, and Tracy Allen.

He served 20 years in the military, was a graduate of UA in Civil Engineering, 30 years with the Corp of Engineers. He was the best dad and grandfather.

Fannie G. Jones

LIVINGSTON - Fannie G. Jones, age 95, of 115 Bell Avenue, died January 10, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center Princeton. Services will be Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Livingston at noon. Visitation is today from 1-6 at the funeral home and one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will follow in Old Shiloh Cemetery with McInnis Mortuary of Livingston directing.

Rayburn Douglas Guy

GREENSBORO - Rayburn Douglas Guy, age 60, died January 16, 2002. Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Memory Chapel with Rev. Edwin King officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Moundville with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Roxie Guy; daughter, Brenda Duncan and brother, Wesley Guy.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Guy; daughter, Linda Duncan; sons, Johnny Guy and Earl Duncan; sisters, Jessie Thompson of Northport; brother, Charles Guy of Tuscaloosa; grandchildren, Virginia Layton, Larry Layton, Kala Duncan, Charlie Duncan, Brenda M. Guy and Taylor D. Guy.

Pallbearers will be Ray Lowery, Robert Tucker, Raymon Smith, John Newman, Jeff Jarvis and Wade Farris.

Honorary pallbearers are employees of Welborn Transport, Jimmy Barnes, Frankie Lowery, Kevin Lowery, Pete Jarvis, Tim Jarvis, Nathan Lowery, Donald Thompson, Paul Poteete, Ronnie White, Floyd Guy and many other friends and relatives.

Venora Garner

FORKLAND - Venora Garner, age 75, died January 15, 2002, at Alice Kidd Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa. Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m. from the Old Green Oak Baptist Church with Rev. James Reed, pastor. Rev. William Branch, officiating. Burial will follow in Old Green Oak Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis will direct.

Robert Edwards

GADSDEN - Robert Edwards, 88, of Gadsden, formally of Tuscaloosa died January 16, 2002. Graveside services at Evergreen Cemetery, January 17, 2002. Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Rev. Duncan Hunter officiating with full Military rites.

He was a retired Lt. Commander Navy veteran serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Navy reserve Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 stars, United Nations Medal, National Defense Service medal, and China Service medal. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa serving on Administrative Board, Sunday School Teacher and song leader of the Brandon Class and volunteer community Soup Bowl.

Survivors include daughters, Jane Edwards, Norfolk, VA., Roberta Clonts; son-in-law, Gene Clonts: Granddaughter, Angela Johnson, Gadsden, Alabama; brothers Gerald Edwards, Atlanta, GA., Quentin Edwards, Birmingham, Ala. and other relatives. Special caregivers at Homestead Haven, Trish, Diane, Eloise, Nizzie and Cindy and also Alacare Hospital.

Walter Sturdivant Davis

MARION - Walter Sturdivant Davis, age 82, died January 16, 2002, at his residence. Services will be held 3 p.m. today, Marion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Home of Marion directing. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service.

Miller Collins

NORTHPORT - Miller Collins, age 67, died January 9, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 1 p.m. today, Chapel of Wills’ Funeral Service with Rev. Roy L. Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in West Highland Memorial Gardens with Wills' Funeral Service directing.

Jessie Lane Barnes

SWEET WATER - Jessie Lane Barnes, age 95, of Fifteen 4th Street, died Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at his residence. Services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Aimwell Baptist Church Cemetery with O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing.
