Ava Mae Hollinger Cobb

KENNEDY - Mrs. Ava Mae Hollinger Cobb, 91, died April 1, 2002 at Fayette Medical Center and Long Term Care in Fayette. Services will be held at Dowdle Funeral Home Chapel, April 4, 2002 at 2 p.m. Bro. Billy Carl Sullivan will officiate and Assisting will be Bro. John Stamps. Burial will follow in Paynes Chapel Cemetery in Millport. Visitation will be at Dowdle Funeral Home tonight from 6-9 p.m. Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport is directing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Fermon Cobb and infant son, Jerry Cobb.

Survivors include her daughter, Jewell Mathis of Kennedy; son, Donald (Barbara) Cobb of Kennedy; brother, Carl (Gladys) Hollinger of Kennedy; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mae Cobb was born in Lamar County on March 31, 1911 to the late Allen Houston and Mittie Kyles Hollinger. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Larry Whitson, Lloyd Moore, Willie Higdon, Clay Mathis, Jeremy Cobb, and David House.

C. D. Tatum, Jr.

TUSCALOOSA - C. D. Tatum, Jr., died April 3, 2002, at LaRocca Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa. Graveside services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Tatum, Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ella Finnell Tatum; children, C. David Tatum and his wife, Catherine, Memphis, Tenn.; Edward F. Tatum and his wife, Pat, Baton Rouge, La.; Alice T. Summerford and her husband, Clark, Tuscaloosa; grandchildren, Ann Tatum Lankford and her husband, Brian, Memphis, Tenn.; Leigh S. Tatum, Memphis, Tenn.; Edward F. Tatum, Jr., Baton Rouge, La.; Lauren A. Tatum, Baton Rouge, La.; Margaret E. Summerford, Tuscaloosa and David C. Summerford, Tuscaloosa; a sister, Mary Margaret Barrow, Lanette, Ala., and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Tatum was born in Crossville, Ala. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and the University of Alabama. During World War II he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Lexington in the Pacific theater. He co-owned Tatum Pontiac Company and later worked for the University of Alabama, first in the treasurer’s office and later as the Business Manager of the Athletic Department.

Honorary pallbearers are Harlan Meredith, Jack Warner, Don Hays, Clyde Price , Jackie Cummings, Bobby Drew, Allen Bales, Joe Brown Duckworth, Dick Pride, Hampton Bush, W. D. Jamison, Dr. John Summerford, Mrs. Hardy and the staff of LaRocca Nursing Home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Building Fund of First Presbyterian Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Willie D. Maddox

TUSCALOOSA - Mrs. Willie D. Maddox, age 58, of 1818 15th Avenue, Apt. 4, died March 31, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Chapel of Rollins’ Mortuary with Rev. David Jerome Savage officiating. Burial will follow in Taylorsville Community Cemetery with Rollins’ Mortuary directing.

Survivors include sons, Oscar Maddox, Ramon Maddox, Isiah Maddox and Larry Maddox; three sisters, four brothers, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

William Harley Jones

MCCALLA - William Harley Jones, age 65, died April 3, 2002. Services will be held at Unity Baptist Church on April 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. with burial in Antioch Cemetery. Rev. Floyd Peters officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 at Unity Baptist Church in Rock Creek. Patterson Funeral Home of Hueytown is directing.

Survivors include sons, William J. Jones, Bessemer, John P. Jones, Bessemer; daughter, Tammy M. Wilson, Rock Creek; sister, Cora Mae Clark, Tuscaloosa; brothers, Archie Jones, Tuscaloosa, David Jones, Tuscaloosa, Farrell Jones, Adger, Loice (Pete) Jones, Bessemer, Murphy Jones, Tuscaloosa; and five grandchildren.

Berta Sims Bishop

FLORENCE - Berta Sims Bishop, age 95, died April 3, 2002, at Glenwood Rehab. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Memory Hill Gardens with Rev. Dallas Culver officiating. Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held after service.

She was preceded in death by Roy C. Bishop, husband and Tera Adell Bishop, infant granddaughter.

Survivors include son, Clay A. Bishop (Patricia) of Florence; sister, Mrs. Lottie Stokes of Akron; grandchildren, Patti Bishop of Gadsden, Allen Bishop (Donna) of Demopolis and other nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bishop was born in Hale County and a long time resident of Tuscaloosa. She was a charter member of Druid Hills United Methodist Church. She was a retired nurse and following retirement served as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to American Heart Association.

Edna L. Abernathy

DEMOPOLIS - Edna L. Abernathy, age 93, of 1607 Highway 43 South, died April 3, 2002, at Willows Retirement Home. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Demopolis Memorial Gardens with Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors of Demopolis directing. Visitation will be 4-6 today at the funeral home.

James T. Crossland, Sr.

REFORM - James T. Crossland, Sr., 73, died April 4, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Sunset Chapel, Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Bethabara Church Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Sunset Funeral Home is directing.

Annie Pearl Gilmore

PANOLA - Annie Pearl Gilmore, 87, died April 2, 2002 at Aliceville Manor Nursing Home. Services will be held at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 12 noon-8 p.m. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. Lavender Funeral Services is directing.

Alice Jarvis

BIRMINGHAM - Alice Jarvis, age 60, former native of Forkland, died March 31, 2002, at Medical Center East. Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. from Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis Chapel. Rev. John Kennard, officiant. Burial will follow in Birdine Cemetery in Forkland with Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis directing.

Archie McCants

NORTHPORT - Archie McCants, age 49, died March 29, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Shady Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Little Star Bethel Cemetery in Burnsville. Wills' Funeral Service is directing. Visitation will be 12-7 p.m. today.

Hollie Morrow, Sr.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Hollie Morrow, Sr., a Green e County native, and a resident of San Diego, died March 29, 2002. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McInnis Mortuary in Eutaw. The Rev. S. N. Norwood, Jr., will officiate with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation is Saturday from 9 a.m. until the service time.

Willie Gordon Binion Brown

REFORM - Willie Gordon Binion Brown, 81, died April 2, 2002 at Pickens County Medical Center. Services will be held at Pickens County High School, Saturday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 noon- 8 p.m. today. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Saturday. Lavender Funeral Service is directing.

Henry Lee Slappy, Sr.

TUSCALOOSA - Henry Lee Slappy, Sr., died April 3, 2002 in the VA Medical Center, Birmingham, AL. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 11, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church, Gainesville, Florida. The family will receive friends in Rollins’ Mortuary Chapel, 2701 M. L. King Jr. Blvd., Tuscaloosa, AL on Monday, April 8, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Those who cherish his memories are eight sons, two in Tuscaloosa, Fred (Vurlie) Dexter and Henry (Sabrena) Slappy, Jr., four daughters, one brother-in-law, 32 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Henry Lee Slappy, Sr. was born November 23, 1915 in Georgia. He later moved to Gainesville, Florida where he met and married the late Janie Mae Gainey Slappy. In 1997, he moved to Tuscaloosa to live with his son, Fred Dexter and family where he remained until he departed this life on April 3, 2002.

He was an active Foster Grandparent Volunteer with Focus on Senior Citizens working at Hillcrest Middle School in Mrs. Giles and Walker’s class.

Oree F. Maughan

TUSCALOOSA - Oree F. Maughan, age 91, of 509 32nd Street, died April 6, 2002 at Heritage Health Care Center. Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. from Northridge Baptist Church. Rev. Aaron Olive will officiate. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service at church. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home Northport is directing.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Thela Mae Maughan, and stepson, Evan Coryea.

Survivors include stepson, James T. Coryea, daughters-in-law, Inez Coryea and Jean Coryea, nephew, Don Maughan, nieces, Helen Cole Walker, Laura Jones, sister-in-law, Lillie Mae Maughan, four granddaughters, Cherry (Danny) Mattison, Pam (Bob) Turner, Linda (Howard) Miller, Donna Lake, 11 great-grandchildren and 14 great great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be Cory Bingham, Chris Turner, Todd Turner, Luke Miller, Gavin Miller, Jason Lake, Jason Mattison.

Honorary pallbearers are Mike Wright, Tommy Beavers, O.B. Kirby, Steve Lancaster, Deacons of Northridge Baptist Church, employees of Heritage Health Care, Rev. George Jackson, Ed Herrington, Elton Avery, Sonny Falgout, Cliff Ballard, Chris Thaxton, Wayne Waldrop and Henry Wright.

Agnes V. Crowley

EUTAW - Agnes V. Crowley, 87, 604 North St., died April 7, 2002 at Northport Medical Center. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mesopotamia Cemetery, Eutaw with Rev. Leon Winters and Rev. Clarence Grammer officiating. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gordan W. Crowley; son, Thomas H. Rester Jr.

Survivors include her daughters, Sonja R. Drummond and Vera R. Phares; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Warrior Academy.

George Anders

COTTONDALE - George Anders, age 84, died April 8, 2002, at his residence. Arrangements will be announced later by Heritage Chapel Funeral Home.

Alphonse Mazzini Sequino

TUSCALOOSA - Alphonse Mazzini Sequino, 89, of 4704 Heatherwood Drive, died April 6, 2002 at Forest Manor. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 12, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa.

Survivors include his wife, Lena D. Sequino, formerly of Troy, Ala; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia S. and Robert F. Daffin, Jr. of Warner Robbins, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald A. and Lynn R. Sequino of Lake Wales, Fla.; four grandchildren: Laura (Casey) Lineberry of Tuscaloosa, Ala., John R. (Debbie) Woelfel of Cincinnati, Ohio, Deborah (Kenneth) Crownover of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Christopher Daffin and Gianni Oliver of Marblehead, MA; two step-grandchildren, Robert F. Daffin III of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Cynthia A. Daffin of Troy, Ala.; and nine great-grandchildren,
