Mattie Stephens
ARKADELPHIA - Mattie Stephens, 96, of Arkadelphia died April 18, 2006, in Twin Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 5, 1910, in the Kansas community, the daughter of the late Theodore and Bertha Ellis. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church at Gurdon.
Survivors include: One son, Willard Stephens of Omaha, Neb.; one brother, Rudell Ellis of Arkadelphia; two sisters, Ruby Westfield of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jessie Mae Wilson of San Francisco, Calif.; and nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church with Rev. Johnnie Harris officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hedge Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.

James L. Golden
ARKADELPHIA - James L. "Bud" Golden, 84 of Arkadelphia died Monday April 17, 2006. He was born Feb. 20, 1922, the son of Zib and Fannie Bridges Golden. He was a retired employee of Daily Lumber Co. and member of the Second Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a WWII Navy veteran and a member of the 82nd Seabees. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold "Pete" Golden and Marion "Snooks" Golden; one sister, Eleane Golden Connell; and one grandson, Rusty Golden.
Survivors include: His wife of 58 years, Geraldine Daniell Golden; five sons, Larry Golden and wife, Sandra, Donnie Golden and wife, Gail all of Curtis, David Golden, and wife Judy, Danny Golden and wife, Paula, Gary Golden and wife, Jan all of Arkadelphia; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2006, in Second Baptist Church with Rev. Faron Rogers and Rev. Carl Kluck officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Richard Carter, Don Egger, Bill Jackson, Ronnie Riggle, Ross Buck, and Floyd Brantley. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the Second Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home.

Mac Ellis Osburn
Mac E. Osburn, age 82 of Gurdon died Friday at his home in Gurdon. Mac was a retired Compressor Construction Superintendent for Arkla Gas Company and a US Veteran of World War II serving as a medic. Mac was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gurdon, where he had served on the Building and Grounds Committee for several years. He leaves behind to mourn his death, his loving and devoted wife, Johnetta (Jonnye) Bolls Osburn
Son: Mark Osburn and wife, Kim of Delight, Arkansas, a brother, Ralph Osburn of Waco, Texas and a sister Jean Osburn of Rowlette, Texas and a grandson; Chance Griffith Osburn
Mac was preceded in death by Son, David Osburn, Sister, Helen Hamil and Brother, Bill Osburn. Those serving as pallbearers: Dennis White, James Franklin, William Norman, David Sutton, David Karr and Darrell Norman, Honorary Pallbearers will be his Coffee Drinking Group.
Funeral services are entrusted to Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon this Sunday, April 8, 2007 at 2:00PM in the First Baptist Church in Gurdon. Interment will be in the Rose Hedge Cemetery in Gurdon.

Ray Coston
ROYAL - Ray Coston, 55, of Royal, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006. He was born on Nov. 3, 1950, at Malvern, the son of Edward Ray Coston and Betty Sue Collins (Coston) Stover. On June 1, 1975, he was married to Sandy Sirmon.
Ray graduated from Arkadelphia High School in 1968, Henderson State University with his business degree and his masters degree in sociology in 1974 and the FBI Academy in 1993. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Garland County Fair Board, 32nd Degree Mason, Garland County Cattleman's Association, Arkansas FBI Academy Graduates Association, Arkansas State Police Association and the Lake Hamilton FFA Alumni.
Ray started his career in law enforcement with the Arkadelphia Police Department, then with the Clark County Sheriffs Office, and in 1974 he joined the Arkansas State Police Department, where he was still employed.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Coston of Royal; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Nick and Mischelle Coston of Green wood and Luke Coston of Fayetteville; his grandchildren, Abigayle Coston and Brandon Coston; one brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Pat Coston of Malvern and their children, Eric Coston of Hot Springs and Michael Coston of Fort Campbell, Ky.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Duane Miller of Arkadelphia, and their daughter Leslie Miller, and Susan and Johnny Gordon of Sparkman, and their daughter, Stephanie Hebert; one step-brother, Robert Stover of Arkadelphia; one father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glen and Myrtle Sirmon of Kirby; and other family and friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2006, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hot Springs, with Bro. Dennis Anderson officiating.
Full State Police Honors will be performed by the Arkansas State Police Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.
Interment will be in the Lowe Cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Hot Springs.
Pallbearers will be Nick Coston, Luke Coston, and the Arkansas State Police.

Arline "Ms. Pete" Cathey
Arline "Ms. Pete" Cathey of Gurdon age 88 died Friday at Baptist Hospital in Arkadelphia. Born in Nevada County on November 1, 1917 to Horace & Nellie Cathey (Smith). Arline retired from Austin Capps Grocery Store, then worked a number of years in the Gurdon School with the Foster Grandparents Program. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gurdon.
Survivors:
Sister: Norma Pierce and husband, Joe of Hot Springs
Niece: Linda Formby and husband, William of Okolona
Services are Monday, October 23 at 10:30AM in Horne Funeral Chapel with intermenty in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation is one hour before the service, with Bro. Charles Lesley officiating. Memorial to First Baptist Church in Gurdon.

Barbara Wood
Having grown weary of her 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's, Barbara Wood accepted her Savior's invitation to join him for eternity. She began her journey on February 11, 2007.
She leaves behind a grieving and loving family. Husband of 40 years A.B. Wood of Gurdon, Daughter Kristi, Son Brett and Granddaughter Kira all of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Brother Jim Ginger of Little Rock.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 Thursday February 15, 2007 at Horne Funeral Home chapel in Gurdon. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Alzheimers Foundation.

Roena Ross Whitmarsh Timmons
Roena Ross Whitmarsh Timmons died July 10, 2007 in Columbus, Georgia. Born Sept. 1, 1938, in Gurdon, Arkansas, the daughter of Earl and Lorena Ross, graduated Gurdon High School, attended Henderson State Teachers College and graduated from Arburn University in Arburn, Alabama. She was a librarian in the Columbus Public School System for 40 years, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gurdon and a member of the Arkadelphia Chapter DAR. Survivors are one daughter, Patti Farr, two grandsons and two great grand-daughters all of Columbus, Georgia, one sister, Theda Aud (Millard) of Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Funeral services were in Columbus, Georgia on Thursday, July 12, 2007. A graveside service will be in Gurdon at Rose Hedge Cemetery on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at 10:00AM. Visitation will be at Horne Funeral Home in Gurdon Monday night, July 16, from 6pm to 8pm. Memorials may be made to the Gurdon High School Auditorium - Alumni Room

Elven McBride
Elven McBride, age 78 of Gurdon, died Saturday August 5, 2006. He was a supervisor for International Paper Co., a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Gurdon, where he taught Sunday School and was a Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon of the church. He was also an Officer for the United Way, President of the CADC for 3 years, a 4-H leader for 20 years, a Superintendent at the Clark County Fair over the produce, and also a member of the Clark County Cattlemen’s Association. He is survived by:
Wife: Mary McBride of Gurdon
Son: Ronnie McBride of Gurdon
Daughters: Crystal Dyer of Texarkana, AR; Melody Key of Farmington, AR.
Brother: Jake McBride of Gurdon
Sister: Linda Ross of Longview, TX.
5 Grandchildren, and 6 Greatgrandchildren also survive.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 Wednesday August 9 at the First Assembly of God Church of Gurdon with Rev. Kevin Jester and Rev. Jim Farris officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Springs Cemetery under the direction of Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon. Memorials may be made to Teen Challenge of Northwest Arkansas in Morrow Arkansas.

Thomas Cary "Corky" Garner
Thomas Cary Garner age 76 of Prescott, Arkansas formerly of Channelview, TX died Wednesday. He was a retired Instrument Technician of Armco Steel, a Veteran of the Korean War and a member of the former Grace Lutheran Church of Channelview. He is survived by
Daughter; Barbara Ann Garner and fiancé Jeff Shipley of Tomball, TX
Son; Thomas Anthony “Tony” Garner of Austin, TX

4 Great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives. Mr. Garner was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Garner.

Mildred Slayton
Mildred Slayton, 81, of Gurdon, passed away October 13, 2007. She was born February 23, 1926 to the late Archie & Pattie (Otwell) Norman. She was preceded in death by husbands, Jimmy Slayton and Howard Ferguson; son, David Wayne Slayton; brother, L.C. Norman and Sister Patsy Norman.
Mildred was a beautician in Gurdon for 50 years. She was also a long time, faithful member of First Baptist Church in Gurdon where she was very involved with a servant’s heart. She was the secretary and treasurer for the South Fork Cemetery Association for many years. Most importantly to her, she was a dedicated and much loved Mother, Mimmie, Aunt and Sister.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Anderson and husband, Ed of Gurdon; Grandsons; Jason Anderson of Gurdon, John Anderson and wife Christina of Sherwood, Granddaughter-in-law, Michelle Anderson of Gurdon; Great-grandchildren, Jase, Ethan, Cerra Cathryn and Brantley. She is also survived by a nephew raised as a son, Joel Slayton and wife Dianne of Conway, two sisters; Adeline Kelly and Virginia Little of North Little Rock and brother, Archie (A.G.) Norman of Eldorado and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a very dear friend, James Smith of Camden.
Funeral services are Tuesday, October 16 at 2:00PM in First Baptist Church with intermenty in South Fork Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. James Raines assisted by Rev. Charles Leslie and Dr. Joel Slayton. Visitation will be Monday, October 15 between 5:30PM to 8:00PM at Horne Funeral Home 101 South 3rd St. Gurdon, AR.
