Jane Turner Morse
Jane Turner Morse, 92, of Washington, Conn., died Sunday, June 24, 2001.
She as born in Marianna and attended the University of Arkansas and later studied art in Washington, D.C. and Europe. She was one of the top fashion illustrators in the country, most notably for Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, Ladies' Home Journal and other top fashion arbiters.
In 1935, she married Imre von Schreiber. Divorced in 1950, she married Forbes Morse in 1960. After they retired, she taught ceramics both in Connecticut and Georgia. Her prize-winning work was been widely exhibited.
Jane Morse is survived by two sons, Paul von Schreiber of Guadalajara, Mexico and Stephen von Schreiber of Cambridge, England; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Dellie Morse of Litchfield, Conn.; and two nephews, Turner Hopkins of Memphis and Will Hopkins of New York City.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at the congregational Church in Washington on the Green, Conn.
The family requests memorial gifts be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
Wynona Phillips
Wynona Phillips, 76, of Moro, died Thursday, July 12, 2001.
She was born in Lee County and was a resident of the Vineyard and Aubrey areas for many years before returning to the Moro area in 1970.
She is survived by four sons, William Robinson and James Robinson, both of Chicago, Louis Robinson of New York and Eddie Lee Robinson of Memphis; two daughters, Ernestine Phillips of Chicago and Stephanie Brenda Giles of Little Rock; niece, Lue Dora McDaniel of Moro; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 12 noon Monday, July 16 at Springfield M.B. Church in Moro with Rev. Shadrach Turner officiating. Burial was in Springfield Cemetery in Moro by Branscumb, Johnson and Gilchrest Funeral Home of Brinkley.
Lucille Ishmael
Lucille Ishmael, 92, of Gill, died Friday, June 29, 2001 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis.
She was born in Palestine and was the widow of Thomas Ishmael, who preceded her in death in 1987. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charlie James Smith and a stopson, Henry Thomas Ishmael.
She received her educatin from Union Hill Baptist Church and in Forrest City. She was an educator and taught school in Gill, Mt. Moriah, Walls Chapel and Garrett Grove. After she stopped teaching she was employed by the Lee County Co-Op Clinic of Marianna. She also worked for the Lee County Election Committee as a poll worker.
She is survived by a stepson, Asie Ashmeal of Detroit, Mich.; a step-daughter, Ethel Davis of Chicago; her niece, Emily Monroe of Palestine; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7 at Mt. Gillian Missionary Baptist Church in Gill with the Rev. Timothy Smith, pastor of Mount Ararat Baptist Church in North Little Rock officiating. Burial was in St. John Cemetery at Felton by Branscumb, Johnson and Gilchrest Funeral Home.
Ruthie Harris
Ruthie Mae Harris, 66, of Moro, died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
She was an ordained minister.
She is survived by 12 children, Otha Harris Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Clandia Brown, Elder Herbert Harris Sr., and Charles Harris of Detroit; Lloyd Harris Sr. of Little Rock, Evangelist Mary Bridewell and Latrice Harris of Marianna, Lois McGee of North Little Rock, Barbara Calbert of Houston, Texas, Marvin Harris Sr. of Dallas, Texas, Evangelist Thelma King of Fares Heights, Ill., and Milton Harris Sr. of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Pearl Clark of Memphis and Bernice Moore of Helena; 33 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 12 noon Saturday, July 14 at Lee High School with Elder Herbert Harris officiating. Burial was in Marianna Memorial Park.

Sue Turner
Sue Williams Turner, 71, of Pine Bluff, died Saturday, June 30 at Heart Hospital in Little Rock.
She was the sister of Marlen Williams of Marianna and had visited here often. Whe was a greduate of Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway and taught many years at Watson Chapel High School.
Other survivors include her husband, Francis W. Turner of the home; four sons, Jeff and Lee Turner of Pine Bluff, Andrew Turner of Princeton and Robert Turner of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Susan Shuff of Pine Bluff; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 3 at Hale-South Chapel in Pine Bluff. Burial was in Princeton Cemetary under the direction of Hale-South Funeral Home.
Myrtle Alldredge
Myrtle Maud Alldredge, 90, of Bartlett, Tenn., formerly of Marianna, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001 at Ave Maria Nursing Home of Bartlett.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary Carruth of Cordova, Tenn., Barbara Calaway, Debbie Solomon and Patricia Fortune, all of Little Rock; and a sister, Mildred Woods of Marianna.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Barney Alldredge; three sons, Jeff, John and Buddy Alldredge; and a daughter, Bernice Harris.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in Marianna with Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial was in Marianna Memorial Park.

Jessie Mae Burton
Jessie Mae Burton, 87, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001 at Crestpark in Forrest City.
She was the widow of Garfield Burton.
Survivors include two sons, Loyd Burton of North Little Rock and William "Bill" Burton of CLarksville, Tenn.; three daughters, Wilma Dean Mathews of Palestine, Erma Jean Hendrix of Marianna and Betty Allshouse of Hot Springs; a brother, Homer Mitchell of Marianna; ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Hubert and John Mitchell; and two sisters, Maggie Story and Stella May.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Walls Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Scott and the Rev. Randy Baker officiating. Burial was in Marianna memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the Walls Chapel Building fund.
Eva Clifton
Eva Lee Clifton, 95, of North Little Rock, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001.
She was born in Marianna to the late Hugh and Allie Whiteside Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Clifton, Sr.
Survivors include three sons, Walter L. Clifton Jr. of Memphis, Harold L. Clifton of Martin, Tenn., and David A. Clifton of Rogers; a brother, Northern Miller of Little Rock; a sister, Ruth Weeks of Coldwater, Miss.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 12 noon Friday, Aug. 24 at Roller-Owens Funeral Home in North Little Rock. Burial was in LaGrange Cemetery.

Herbert Smith Jr.
Herbert A. Smith Jr., of Florence, Ala., died
Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001.
Born in Richmond, Va. and raised in Helena, he was an FBI Senior Resident Agent who had served the Florence and Northwest Alabama community since 1991. In his distinguished 24-year career with the FBI, he received numerous special recognitions for his investigative skill and expertise.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn McCarty Smith; a daughter, Jana Lynn Smith, and son, Matthew Clark Smith, all of Florence; his parents, Herbert A. Smith Sr. and Ethel Lueken Smith of Helena; sisters, Dreda McElrath of Jackson, Mo., Vickie Trimble of Lawrence, Kansas, Frances Crawford of Bartlesville, Okla., Julia Shockley of Little Rock, Jennifer Smith of Helena; brothers, Walter Smith of Alpharetta, Ga., Glen SMith of Marianna, Jeff Smith of Yukon, Okla., and Michael Smith of Colliersville, Tenn.
A brother, Charles Smith, preceded him in death.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Christ Chapel Church in Florence with the Rev. Abbott Victor J. Clark officiating.

James Earl Young
James Earl Young, 83, of LaGrange, died Wednesday, Agu. 29 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
He served his country during WWII. He was the first mayor of LaGrange and was featured in a PBS documentary on farming.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie Young; three daughters, Forlisher Brown and Hester Montgomery, both of Omaha, Neb., and Clariece Sanders of Marianna; nine sons, James Young of Detroit, Mich., Lynn Young of Longview, Texas, Russell Young of Memphis, Manuel Young of Felton, ARthur Young and Carl Young, both of Alton, Okla., Earl Young, Clement Young and Malcolm Young, all of LaGrange; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 at Mt. Perion M.B. Church in LaGrange with Rev. Booker Thomas officiating. Burial was at Mt. Perion Cemetery.

Lucy Ann Evans
Lucy Ann Evans, 77, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001 in Memphis.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Catherine Evans of Marianna; three nieces, Barbara Weeks of Palestine, Bonnie Martinez of Sterling, Va. and Judy Thomas of Spring, Texas; and three nephews, Edwin Evans, Russell Evans and Robert Evans, all of Marianna.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at Marianna Memorial Park with B. Heath Harper officiating.

Charles Turner
Charles Dale Turner, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at the Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
He was born in Chester and lived in the Forrest City area most of his life.
He is survived by two sons, Charles Turner of Ohio and Dr. Robert Turner of Tennessee; four daughters, Teresa Turner-Rowe of Reno, Patti Long of Forrest City, Laura Turner-McCullough of Missesota and Ruth Landis of Texas; three brothers, Alvin Turner of Fayetteville, Darrell Turner of Louisiana and Donnie Turner of California; two sisters, Helen Helwig and Ina Couch, both of California; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 at the Bell Cemetery in Palestine.

Thomas Burke
Thomas Bateman Burke, 58, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001 at Washington Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Memphis, the son of Govan Harris and Ruth Bateman Burke.
He was a former adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas School of Law, served as a Special Associate Justice on the Arkansas Supreme Court under Governors Clinton and Tucker, and served as General Counsel for Washington Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by his parents of Fayetteville; a daughter, Charlotte Burke Estes of Jackson, Miss.; a son, Dr. Charles T. Burke of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a brother, Charles E. Burke of Bentonville; and two grandchildren.
Committal services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8 at Son's Cahpel Cemetery under the direction of memorial Funeral Home os Springdale. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville with Father Lowell Grisham officiating.

Dylan Sims
Dylan Michael Sims, three months old, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001.
Survivors include his parents, Crystal Gail and Billy Joe Sims of Marianna; a brother, Hunter Sims of Marianna; his maternal grandmother, Lennie Ruthledge of Marianna; his maternal grandfather, Ronald Isbell of Russellville; and his paternal grandmother, Alice McNair of Marianna.
Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Marianna Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Isbell officiating. Burial was in Marianna Memorial Park.

Louise Lueken
Louise Spears Lueken, 86, of Little Rock, died Tuesday, Augl 7, 2001.
Lueken grew up in Marianna and graduated from Marianna High School in 1933. She worked at a local department store and later bought a beauty shop in West Helena.
In 1941, she married Norbert Lueken in Helena, and they moved to Little Rock in 1949.
In the 1950's, she appeared regularly in television commercials as the spokesman for Coleman Dairy of Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Aikman, and a brother, J.L. Spears.
She is survived by two sons, Norbert Lueken Jr. of Booneville, and Milton Lueken, of Little Rock; a sister, Pauline Allen of Beebee; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Aug. 10 at Our Lady of Holy Souls Catholic Church. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
