Biographical And Historical Memoirs of Pulaski, Jefferson, Lonoke, Faulkner, Grant, Saline, Perry, Garland And Hot Spring Counties, Arkansas

PURVIS EFFORD BROWN, 75, of Huntsville died May 30 at the Washington
Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born December 10, 1921
at Jasper, Alabama, the son of John Calm and Elona Tidwell Brown. He
had been employed in the shipbuilding industry as a pipewelder and was
a member of the First Baptist Church of Huntsville. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Elma Ruth Riley Brown on February 21, 1994.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Wendell Kent and Sheila
Brown of Little Rock; one sister, Allie Brown of Huntsville; one
grandson, Aaron Brown of Little Rock, and one granddaughter, Samantha
Brown of Little Rock.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Colbaugh Church with the Rev.
Earl Dean Morris officiating. Interment will be in the Colbaugh
Cemetery under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Chales Riley, Von Caraway, Darrell Phillips, Jack
Benson, Greg Jordan and Paul Tabor.

VIRGIE LUCILLE COUNTS, 70, of Lowell died May 27, 1997 at Northwest
Medical Center in Springdale. She was born February 7, 1927 at
Clarksville to Willis and Nora Bell Adams Shelton. She was a homemaker
and a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Counts of the home;
one son, Robert V. Counts of Lowell; two daughters, Janice Morris and
Donna Kyles, both of Lowell; one brother, Earl Shelton of Iowa; two
sisters, Lola B. Childers and Gladys B. Dutton, both of Springdale;
nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home of
Springdale with the Rev. Loy Counts officiating. Burial was in Drakes
Creek Cemetery. .
Pallbearers were David Hiblong, Larry Young, Jerry Shelton, Danny
Counts, Loy Dale Counts, and Mark Counts.

SHERMAN A. CARR, 86, of Hindsville died June 22, 1997, at Springdale.
He was born Dec. 26, 1910, at Newport to Charlie and Susie Wood Carr.
He was a retired farmer and attended Evergreen Church of Christ.
Survivors include his widow, Clema Carr of the home; one son, Jimmy
Carr of Springdale; one daughter, Mary Ann Shaft of Hindsville; one
sister, Pauline Bell of Newport; four grandchildren; and four great-
grandchildren.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Joyce
Cemetery with Elisha Cloer officiating.
Pallbearers were Junior Powell, George Dobbs, Paul Bridges, Jack
Roles, Dwight McCoy, and Tom Childers.

JAMES KELLY CORNETT, MD., 63, died at home on May 10, 1997. He was
born at St. Paul, Ark., on April 28, 1934, to the late Kelly and
Bertie Brashears Cornett. He was educated in the Fayetteville public
schools, attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Tex., and was a
graduate of Tulane School of Medicine. He practiced family medicine,
specializing in obesity and diabetes, in Little Rock from 1960 to
1992. He was a past member of the American Medical Association, the
Arkansas Medical Association, and the Pulaski County Medical Society.
He was an active volunteer for the American Heart Association and the
American Diabetes Association. He served as a president of both
Arkansas affiliate boards. Dr. Cornett received numerous awards from
the Arkansas Heart Affiliate for 28 years of dedicated service,
including Volunteer of the Year, a research grant in his name, and the
naming of the annual Worthern-Cornett Gold Heart award.
His many interests included tennis, antiques, and the decorative arts.
He served a term as president of the Arkansas Opera Board. He enjoyed
lecturing and sharing his knowledge of Carl Faberge and Russian
objects of art. He served his church as a deacon and an elder.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Margaret Bennett Cornett; two
daughters, Lesa Cornett and Elaine Stitten; three sons, Kyle M.
Cornett, Michael K. Cornett and J. Kevin Cornett; two sisters, Retha
Vanderslice of Jefferson City, Mo., and Salona Wachs of Aberdeen, SD.
A graveside service was held at Brashears cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on
Wednesday, May 14. A memorial services was held at 2nd Presbyterian
Church at 4 p.m. Arrangements were by Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth in
Little Rock. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. John Schultz, Dr. John
Stotts, Dr. John Stuckey, Beal Kidd, Ralph Brodie Jimmy Sachs and Dr.
Wade Smith
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, VNA Hospice
Association, or 2nd Presbyterian Church.

PEARL EVELYN BOWEN, 97, of HC 30, Box 214, Kingston died June 22,
1997, at Meadowview Lodge Nursing Home in Huntsville. She was born
June 2, 1900, at Dinsmore, Ark., the daughter of Walter Ervin and Dora
Bell Gibbons Eoff. She was a homemaker and a United Baptist. She was
the widow of John William Bowen, who preceded her in death on Sept.
20, 1981. She was also preceded in death by one son, Clyde Denver
Bowen and by one daughter, Mrs. Cletus Inez Robinson.
Survivors include Ernest Bowen of Springdale, Jim Bowen of King City,
Calif., and Clifford Bowen of Kingston; one daughter, Mrs. Gladys
Bradshaw of Springdale; two brothers, Hillard Eoff of Sunnyside,
Wash., and Jimmy Eoff of Apache Junction, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 26
great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, in the chapel of
Brashears Funeral Home with the Rev. Cecil Garrison and the Rev.
Berton Perry officiating. Interment was in the Kingston cemetery under
the direction of Brashears Funeral Home. Pallbearers were grandsons.

JAMES VERNON INGLE, 59, of Ione, Wash., died April 15, 1997, at his
home of cancer. He was born Sept. 26, 1937, at Red Star, the son of
James Dewey and Golda Blanche Embry Ingle. He served in the U.S. Navy
for 20 years. Following his retirement, he worked in the shipyards in
Bremerton for seven years. He married Meryle Jean Winney Vanderschaef
on Nov. 27, 1976, in Bremerton, Wash. He was preceded in death by his
parents.
Survivors include his widow, Meryle; one son, David Ingle of
Perhastin, Wash.; two daughters, Dawn Collins of Texas and Cathy Ingle
of California; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Dean Ingle of
Van Buren and John Orbin Ingle of Lumber City, Ga.; and four sisters,
Beatrice Mathew of Lumber City, Ga., Darmolene (Jean) Houston of
Walker, La., Dorles Pettigrew of Lincoln, and Linda Walker of Van
Buren.
Private family services were conducted and remains were scattered on
one of his favorite hunting spots, a mountain at Libberty, Wash.
Cremation was at Moon Crematory, Sandpoint Idaho, under the direction
of Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. A memorial monument
will be placed in the Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery at Fort Smith at
the head of his father's grave.
