EDITH HAUSELMAN

Graveside services for Edith Hall Hauselman, 80, of Marvell will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2004 at the Schaffhauser cemetery in Marvell.

Visitation for family and friends will be from noon until 1:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Bob Neal and Sons-Brickell Funeral Home in Marvell.

Hauselman, born March 2, 1924 in the Jacks Creek Community in Chester County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Tom Hall and Bertha Hamlett Hall, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Henderson County Community Hospital in Lexington, Tenn. She attended grade schools in Chester and Henderson Counties in Tennessee and graduated from Lexington High School in 1941. She attended Memphis State University for three years and received her BSE degree from Arkansas State teachers College in Conway.

She moved to Marvell and taught second grade for thirty years. After moving to Marvell, she met and married Oscar Hauselman in 1948. They did not have children of their own, but she often said she was blessed to have taught many children.

She leaves two sisters Evelyn Hall Autry of Lexington, Tenn., Mary Hall Tiebel of West Memphis; three nephews Stephen Tiebel of Little Rock, David Tiebel of West Memphis and Bubba Corder of Arkansas; two nieces Carolyn Maness and Barbara Lane of Lexington; a sister-in-law Polly Wilson.

Bob Neal and Sons Brickell Funeral Home will direct services.

FLOYD PRESTON JR.

A memorial service for Floyd Preston Jr., 46, of Helena will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in West Helena. Dr. Nathaniel Hull will officiate.

Preston, born Oct. 1, 1958 to the union of Floyd D. Preston Sr. and Beulah Kizziah Scott Preston in Memphis, Tenn., died Nov. 28, 2004 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He professed a hope in Christ at an early age in the Catholic faith. In 2000, he joined More Than Conquerors Faith Ministries under the leadership of Rev. Whitaker. He later joined the First Baptist Church in West Helena under the leadership of Rev. Hull.

Before moving to Helena, Floyd worked at the Associated Press in New Jersey, Cetecia Sound Inc., Ingram Micro Inc. in Memphis and Darwin Networks in Maryland.

During his residence in Helena, he worked as a member of the Daily World staff for a brief time, Hoffinger Industries, and as a water treatment operator for the Helena Water Co. He loved children and volunteered as an assistant Cub Scout leader for Boy Scout Pack 113.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a wife, Shirley Daniel-Preston, of Helena; a son Floyd D. Preston III of Memphis, a special extended family Carolyn Hicks, and son, Zachary of West Helena, Cedric Hicks of Horn Lake, Miss.; an uncle Wesley Scott of Missouri City, Texas and a host of cousins and acquaintances.

Jackson Highley Funeral Home will direct services.

JEREMY ANDERSON

Funeral services for Jeremy Dwayne Anderson, 17, of West Helena will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2005 at the Church of the Living God in West Helena. Elder Michael Jenkins will officiate. Burial will be at Jackson Memorial cemetery in the Southland Community.

Visitation will be from 3 until 6 p.m. this evening at the church.

Anderson died Jan. 2, 2004 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

Brown's Home for Funerals will direct services.

Allen Barnwell “Barney” Lewis Sr.

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Helena business leader and philanthropist, Allen Barnwell “Barney” Lewis Sr., 86, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, in his hometown, leaving behind a great legacy of kindness and dedication to Phillips County, a testament to the true nature of one of Helena’s own.

Barney was born in Helena, Nov. 21, 1921 to the late Albert Byrd Lewis of Georgia and the late Mabel Butterrick Lewis of Helena. He graduated from Helena High School in 1939. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and graduated with a degree in business administration and was an honored member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Upon the completion of college, Barney joined the U.S. Navy, serving his country during WWII and received his honorable discharge as a lieutenant in 1959. A keen businessman, Barney was pivotal to Dixie Furniture’s success in several cities in Arkansas and the company is a mainstay in many Delta communities.

Dedicated to education, he and his wife of 40 years, Betty M. Lewis, made several contributions to Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas, ensuring that educational opportunities and a quality education were attainable by the residents of Phillips County.

Lewis Library was dedicated at Phillips College in 1988 and named in honor of the Lewis family for their work toward the educational success of the area. Barney was founder of the Dixie Foundation, a nonprofit organization that awarded scholarships to various students in the county for 20 years.

Barney and his wife helped establish an endowment, the Innovative Developments for Educational Advancement (IDEA) to strengthen college programs and improve student services for those enrolled at PCCUA, continuing his belief that education was the backbone of a successful life. Barney also played a key role in a community wide effort to restore the Pillow-Thompson House, a historic treasure to the community of Helena-West Helena. He was instrumental in construction of the Lily Peter Fine Arts Auditorium.

A true believer in his hometown, Barney helped stabilize the finances of the city, giving generously when times were tough.

Barney served his community in many aspects and was named to the Arkansas College Board of Trustees, the Helena Hospital Board, Eastern Arkansas Mental Health Center, the Helena City Planning Commission, First Federal Savings and Loan, was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and was named Phillips County Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year in 1990.

He also was chosen as the recipient of the First Congressional District of Arkansas’ Community Service Award and the American Bar Associations Liberty Bell Award.

Although Barney was a prominent figure he was always quiet and unassuming and will be greatly missed by all.

His parents, his brother, Harley Lewis; his sister, Betty Lewis Young; and a daughter, Lynette Lewis, preceded him in death. He leaves to remember him his wife of 40 years, Betty M. Lewis; two sons, Alan B. Lewis Jr., and Mark Hodge Lewis; a daughter, Carla Celeste Lewis; two step-daughters, Melinda Moore Boggs and Jamie Victoria Moore; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Helena.

Katherine Elizabeth Rae Florek

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Katherine Elizabeth Rae Florek, 15, of Helena died Friday, June 27, 2008 in Aubrey. Katie Beth was born Oct. 9, 1992 in Newport to Ralph Frederick Florek and Beth Phillips Florek.

She leaves her mother, Beth of Helena; her father, Ralph of La.; brothers, Kevin Florek of Chalmette, La. and Fred Florek and Reyna of Sunset, La.; grandmother, Beverly Phillips of Helena; niece and nephew, Isabella and Alexander Florek; aunts, Connie Huff and Wayne and Debbie King and Rodger; cousins, Lauren Huff, Chris Stevens and Amanda and Dylan Stevens.

Her grandfather Allan Phillips preceded her in death.

Services for Katie Beth will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at Helena First United Methodist Church. Rev. Carolyn Doering will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Helena-West Helena.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Helena First United Methodist Church, 502 Porter St. Helena, AR, 72342 or to DeSoto School, 497 Thunderbird Dr., West Helena AR, 72390. Roller-Citizens Funeral Home will direct services.

CLARENCE O. ALFORD

Clarence O. Alford, 66, died Oct. 16, 2004 in St. Louis, Mo.

Born Aug. 26, 1938 to Harvey Lucian Alford and the former Bertha Lee Sharp in Red Bay, Ala., he was a line worker for a canning factory.

He leaves four brothers, Vertis Alford of West Helena, Curtis Alford of Helena, Therman Alford of Calif. and Roland Alford of Cisbero, Ill.; and a sister, Aubra Dean Terry of Mountain Home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 21 in the Roller-Citizens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Audie Richardson officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Allen Newsom, Lenny Newsom, Ricky Roberts, Daniel King, Keith Alford and Curtis Alford Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Jeff Alford and A.W. Terry Jr.

ROSIE ROY

Funeral services for Rosie Roy, 88, of Lake View will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Lake View. The Rev. Leroy Williams will officiate. Burial will be at First Baptist Church cemetery in Elaine.

Roy, born March 19, 1916 in Louisiana to the late Frank and Cora Gibson, died Dec. 31, 2004 at Crestpark Nursing Home.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church at Lakeview. She was married to the late Charlie Roy in 1933 and to their union one son Bobby Roy was born.

Mrs. Roy has two brothers Ollie and Lawrence Gibson and a grandson Wendell Roy who preceded her in death.

She was a housewife, farmer and an Avon representative for many years.

She enjoyed her family, church and crafts of all kinds.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son Bobby and Essay Roy of Chicago, Ill., two grandsons Bruce and Greg; a granddaughter Joyce all of Chicago; eight grandchildren, a brother in law, Samuel and Delia Roy and a sister-in-law Fannie Davis all of Lambrook, nine nieces, five nephews and a host of great nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jackson and Highley Funeral Home will directs services.

MAE D. HOSKINS

Funeral services for Mae Dean Hoskins, 71, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of West Helena were held Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005 at Simple Tribute Crematory Parlor in San Diego, Calif. Hoskins was born Oct. 29, 1933 in West Helena and died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Paradise Valley Manor Nursing Home in San Diego, Calif.

Hoskins was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny Butler, Pencie and Earnest Barnes and a son Isiah Hoskins Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory nine children and their spouses, Vernita and Jeff Arnett of Little Rock, Larry Hoskins and Marvin and Betty Hoskins of St. Louis, Mo., Carolyn Hoskins, Oscar and Vivian Hoskins, Sharon and Charles Randell, Carl Ray and Stephanie Hoskins all of Helena-West Helena, Nadine Willis and Kenneth and Jessica Hoskins of South Bend, Ind., a brother L.B. Black of St. Louis, Mo., an aunt, Kate Ella Young of Helena; 26 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and a special daughter-in-law, Cheryl Hoskins of San Diego, Calif.

SAMMIE PRYOR

Funeral services for Sammie Pryor, 95, of Marianna will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at the Mt. Perion M.B. Church. The Rev. Booker Thomas will officiate. Burial will be at the LaGrange cemetery in the LaGrange Community.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. this evening in the Brown's Home for Funerals chapel in West Helena.

WILMA LEHMANN

PARAGOULD - Wilma Hearn Lehmann, 62, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 at her home in Paragould. She worked for Methodist Hospital in Jonesboro and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Paragould.

Born Nov. 15, 1942 in Helena, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Ada Hearn.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Tony Ryles officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heath Funeral Home in Paragould.

She leaves two sons, Michael Ervin of Lonoke and Steven Turnage of Beebe; two daughters, Mary Wilburn of Griffithville and Stacey Rollins of Paragould; four brothers, Lawrence Hearn Jr. of Heber Springs, Henry Hearn of Etowah, Tenn., Richard Hearn of Des Arc, and Bobby Hearn of Carrollton, Ill.; two sisters, Edith Eans of Des Arc and Dorothy Williams of Paragould; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and her mother, Ada Hearn.

Pallbearers will be Jake Eans, Ben Eans, Allen Eans, Paul Hearn, Ron Mafnas and Charlie Parks.

Heath Funeral Home of Paragould is in charge of the services.

ERNESTINE JOHNSON

Graveside services for Ernestine Johnson, 74, of Helena will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at the Cane Ridge cemetery in the Snow Lake Community.

Johnson died Dec. 3, 2004.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today in the Brown's Home for Funerals chapel.
